[Q] Which radio should I flash on my Blaze S? - Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G

I have been reading up custom roms ever since I got my Blaze, and something new I didn't know i needed was an updated Radio for certain ones. Doing a little searching, there seems to be more than one radio I can flash; about three I've found. What radio is recommended? What are the differences? Is there enough of a difference for me to be concerned?

Uvmb1 is the latest radio for the blaze and is the most recommended. The t989 radio is compatible (from what I've read from other users) and should work. As far as which is better is a matter of how each works for your area. Try them both for a bit and see which one works best for your area. But the Uvmb1 is the radio the cm developer UberPinguin recommends...

In my area the 3G/HSPA/UMTS signal drops each certain time.
I've tested UVLB7, UVMB1 and UVLH5 radios but it doesn't seems to work.
Sure, is the area when I located, because in another part of the city the signal is strong.
I will test the UVMC6 radio in order to find out if my signal stops dropping
In MIUI, Stock and Avatar is the same results.
Thanks

Check out the Blaze bibles for compatible radios. Benefits differ for each person. Some people are better with the uvmb1 radio while others benefit more from the uvmc6 radio. Flash one, try it out then try another

Now my new radio is T989UVMC6, it works better for me.
Thanks

I remember reading that its more dangerous to flash a radio than a ROM. I heard it could end up bricking the device.

If you flash one not meant for your device, or if it's packaged improperly. Other than that, I've flashed several without any issues. When it doubt, though, let us know here, and we will be more than happy to help

Radio and modem questions

OK since this is a question I'm assuming that I post this here so if I'm wrong sorry. And I have searched for answers to these questions on xda and Google and if info is out there I can't find it so if someone knows where it is point me in the right direction and I'll read the info myself as I'm not to lazy to research info when I can find it now that that's out of the way my questions are as follows...
1. What does the modem in my phone control the wifi or data and basically what does it do? The quick version will be fine.
2. What does the radio do and controll? Quick version OK.
I just updated to the latest ics leak that came out a couple of days ago I think it UCLD2 correct me if I got that version wrong. I've also tried UCALC4 and with neither I get many bars. On gingerbread I got 2 or 3 bars in my home recliner with UCALC4 I got 1 and with UCLD2 this new leak I get 0. I've read flashing the galaxy note radio will fix this if so I need a link to that radio with instructions on flashing it in cwm. And if that radio does not fix the problem can I flash back to this one or maybe a gingerbread one?
And lastley I'm getting a notification at the bottom of my screen every few minutes that says connected to belkin wifi etc. I did not get this on gingerbread is this also a radio problem or a modem problem or a tottaly different issue? And what can I do to fix it? Should I just restore the backup of gingerbread I made and wait for the official update whatever year that may be lol?
Thanks ahead of time for any help or advice...

I typed "android phone modem" in Google and got an answer on the first page, I'm sorry but I highly doubt u searched anything. None the less, as a new user I will spoon feed u this one time
Radio and modem are interchangeable terms used on CDs to basically describe the firmware used to control your phones cellular radio. Different firmwares enable different functions and frequencies. Basically with no modem, u have no cell data, or signal. No calling, no texting, nothing
UCLCL5 has been pulled due to it causing too many instability issues. getting a phone that works with it is luck of the draw. Use leeC UCLA3 radio for ics instead
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24227420
Sorry but I typed in cell phone modem and of course with that all I got was ways to connect your PC to the internet thru the cell phone. Didn't think about putting android in cause I figured modem would be in all phones oh well I will try that too see what I come up with. I'm in a real wooded very rural area so im not sure if the radio is the main problem I do know other phones like pan tech link a non smart phone gets full signal here but none of our android phones do. My main concern is the wifi saying connected every few minutes and my connection seeming like its slower that problem I did not have on gingerbread or UCALC4 is anyone else having these issues on the new leak

OK I flashed that modem that you gave me the link to then rebooted and BAM!!!!!! Instant signal bars... Thanks man you are awesome and I may be a noober but I'm learning a lot fast thanks to guys like you. I am a computer programmer/web developer/ net worker but phones are new to me but I'm learning in many ways there similar but in other ways miles apart... But thanks again.. oh yea by the way in baseband version it says UCALC4 but in build number it says UCLD2 but the modem I flashed said UCLA3 so I'm not sure what that's all about but its working so if it ain't broke you don't go messing with it...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA
yeah, you'll learn about that as u go along, but they're basically different build numbers. UCLD2 is the newest, UCLA4 is the previous ics leak build, and UCLA3 is actually a gingerbread radio (2.3.6), but it works really well.
If I helped I u, and if others do in the future, hit the thanks button!

Wrong. The downloadable link in the last post on that page is by leeC, ics_rogers_base.zip, and its ucla3. its what I'm using right now with ics

Yep, I used LeeC's UCLA3 modem for a good while. I tried the others but kept going back to it for the connectivity. Of course, everyone's phone and conditions differ so you have to try anything for yourself before you know if it is going to work for you. Like mentioned, it will probably show "Unknown" for a baseband, but it works. I am using the latest ICS modem (UCLD2) now with the Alien 7 ICS ROM and it seems to work just as well as the UCLA3 modem did for me.
+1 my wifi is even much faster and alot better range on ucld2 radio. Ucld2 is in every aspect. Far superior
Smoother. Faster. Less bugs
And easier to build from
I built my new rom. The ucld2 one. And did the themeing. In 1 afternoon.
Of course i have a great setup i ended up with from dealing with. The other leak. But i still say its much more refined
The UCLA3 modem worked good for me no doubt but as you said every phone is different and I like to try new things and stay cutting edge so I flashed the UCLC5 modem out of the galaxy note and my download speeds are faster with it but like you said it seems to depend on the phone itself and I would suggest anyone who is gonna try a new modem to try each one for a day or two to see which one is the right fit for your specific phone...

Yea, it worked OK for me (a few fc's in the background) but nothing major, but I too have read about the troubles some people get from the Note modem. Like you said, its probably not worth the gamble...especially now that UCLd2 modem is out.
Scott can you post a link to a zip file for the UCLD2 modem. The post I seen it in the other day I can't find now. I lost all my favorite XDA forum posts when I upgraded to premium. I want to try it on my wife's captivate just for an experiment.....

T-Mobile+Skyrocket(stock)= what radio

Ok so i have an AT&T Skyrocket, rooted but other wise stock on t-mobile. The edge speeds are killing after a few days, I can't get another phone at this time and my skyrocket is in perfect shape. The phone is rooted but otherwise stock on GB, of all the threads I searched, none speak about using a stock ROM and kernal with a different radio? I am wary of bricking my phone and had asked for help from some one local but that was a no go. So I am going to try and flash the radio myself, if I can find one that works nicely with stock ROM and kernal?? I have read of people using the Blaze radio and the UVLG3 from a Tmo note, I can't for the life of me find the thread though. But none talk about stock ROM and or kernal, any help would be great
Edit 1: will this radio work on GB? Blaze_4G_LB7_ICS_Radio_MOD ...... Direct DL, CAN BE USED FOR T-MOBILE/WIND ON ICS
Radios are a different piece of firmware and are not affected by ROM or kernel so as long as the radio is compatible and your APN is correct it will work no matter the ROM

Connection problems with SUPERLITE CM10 JB4.1.2 RoM

I recently flashed to Vincom's SUPERLITE CM10 JB4.1.2 RoM | V8.0.
Ive gotten things up and running pretty well, but there is one major issue I seem to be having. My phone is not consistently able to connect to data on AT&T. I am frequently losing my data connections in locations where I have always had them in the past.
I searched around on his developer thread but didnt see an answer. I saw a reference to APNs for AT&T, but his note says these should now be included in the ROM I flashed, so Im not sure if I am missing something.
Anyone know if this is a common problem or how I can troubleshoot it and get up and running again?
Thanks.
Haven't heard of this being a problem. What modem (baseband) are you on? You can find it in settins, about phone.
Also, in settings wireless, more, mobile networks, Check that the access point name is on att LTE

Its gotten worse. Ive spent the last 5 hours with almost zero data access.
I see baseband version i727UCLI3.
Access Point name was was set to ATT wap, cingular. I switched it to ATT LTE (pta)...should this fix it? Any idea why this would have happened? Will I need to keep checking this or was it just something from the ROM flash?

reflashing radio is the simplest things todo on our phones, no harm will come of it and sometimes beneficial as cwm/twrp wiping and flashing roms dont touch that parition

Data cutting in and out

Firstly, I apologize if I'm painfully "noob" with the question(s)
So I'm running on my TBolt [ROM] CM9 / LiquidSmooth / AOKP / Random ICS
htc_mecha-ics-eng.v1.5
and I'm unsure of how to tell what radio(s) I have running... But my data 4g/3g cuts in and out pretty frequently... I've searched for a remedy for it, but can't seem to find one.
Any help? Is it the Rom in general?
Any responses are appreciated,
again sorry if I've asked anything that's already been answered.

Any ICS ROM will have data issues to some extent. You need to flash a radio to your phone, which may help some... but still expect some drops of data. Before I recommend one, what are the numbers shown under your baseband info?

You're using the combo radios.
Try this old OTA radio found here...

Not entirely true there. Santos ics sense based roms does not have this data dropping issue like the liquid/twisted roms do. His latest ics sense 4 Rom is spot on.
To the op the main reason why the aoap ics Rom has data drop issues is because there is no ril from HTC based for aosp. So liquid had to hack together a ril to work so in a nutshell that's the main reason why for the data drops. Even aosp gingerbread Rom has data drops some but no where as bad as ics versions.

For me I still get data drops on both of Santod's RoMs
When I loose data it is from being in an area with no signal, the phone will not reconnect to data even if I am in an area where i have full bars.
Again, this only happens if I am in an area that has data, then I move to an area that has no data, and back.... but they still do drop data.

4G Versus E

This is sort of a two-fold question. I've searched the forums, until other responsibilities interrupted, but can't find a good answer. I recently unlocked my Skyrocket to use with Tmobile and flashed ptmr3's Sons of Android Rom to replace the I727-UCLD2-oem-rooted Rom (per excellent post by lart2150) I used to get the unlock. Although the baseband version remains UCLD2 (of course) I've noticed that my 4G signal I had initially gotten on the oem rooted rom has diminished to E (post SOA flash). Not that it's a drastic thing but if if I can fix it why not. Also, would flashing a T989 (Tmobile variant SII) Rom be a good fix? I'm reading up on it when time allows but any direction would be appreciated, as always. :silly:
