Hey all.
I'm going to be coming from an optimus g with an external SD. Made it easy to do clean flashes without losing backups, etc. With no external card in the N5, how do people handle clean flashing without losing data? Move everything to a PC and then copy it back after the flash?
Thanks.

phones with no sd card emulate an sd card space that doesnt get wiped during normal wiping to flash a rom. it's essentially a different partition. you'd have to go out of your way to wipe the emulated sd card space to harm any data there. other than that it acts just like having an sd card with a ROM on it that you navigate to via recovery and flash.
Good to know. This is even doing a "factory reset" in CWM/TWRP?
Thanks.

Yes.
By design, since jelly bean, internal user space aka internal sdcard is in fact a folder in /data partition mounted as a drive through fuse.
All recoveries can deal with that. Factory reset always respect 'internal card'.
Doesn't touch your SD unless you use the wipe ext SD.
Personally I don't miss SD Cards at all. Flash based storage give way better transfer speed as well. And with cloud storage it is pretty much a done deal.
Those complaining running out of space are to lazy to clean out their phones.

hey everyone. so if i partition the internal sd card what exactly am i doing? from what i understand, the g2x has 8gb onboard, 1.5 of that is for apps, and 5 goes to user data. the rest i assume is for android?
so if i create a 2gb partition on the internal sd, what am i changing and what does it do to the rest of the space? do i need to create the other partitions in windows later and format them?
168 views and no replies? anyone??
Ok, let me try to explain this one...
In three words, Don't Do It!!!
Your internal sd card is pretty much just that, it's a storage card built onto the phone itself. Now it is already partitioned, and allot!
Not only does this one physical card hold your "internal sd card" contents but it also holds your ROM, cache, all your apps, and even your recovery!
Even though it looks like these are separate drives they are all one physical card, your internal sd card.
Now if you try to add to this mix of partitions on this internal card you run the VERY HIGH risk of messing up the lines and sizes of these partitions. Many things in Android assume that some of these are a certain size or at a certain place, and if you mess with it all hell brakes lose!
Now people sometimes partition the external sd card because they want 2 different file types, like half fat32 (like a normal sd card) and half ext4/3 for apps it use in Linux.
Hope this helps!!!

ok, well then i guess my question is more along the lines of why do we have that option in CWM Recovery and if i create a 2gb partition what happens? does it change the default 1.5gb partition so you have more room for apps?

I'm honestly not sure, I've only ever messed with these partitions manually when unbricking my phone. So if you do it, you have a fairly good chance of bricking the phone, but i don't know how Android will react.

thanks, i was just curious, since CWM gives us the option, but ive never done it and until i can find a good reason to i probably won't even mess with it
but it just seems kind of bad having 5gb on the internal card going to waste, i have backups to my external sd, all my data is there too, so i probably won't even touch that 5gb...
Just be glad it's not the other way around
Ill take too much space over not enough any day!

well true, but still would like to know exactly what happens if you choose to run that in CWM Recovery
seek and ye shall find
found a guide for CWM and from what i see that option puts a partition on your external sd card so it can be used to install apps on IF the rom supports that. it says it does wipe everything else off the card though so you need to make a backup. you can also put a swap partition on it as well
looks like it does not touch the internal sd card phone memory which is what i thought it did

I'm running the stock ROM rooted. I have the bootloader locked still and CWM installed. Ideally I'd like to encrypt internal and external sdcard. Thanks

I'm alright with not being able to flash anything for now, plus isn't there a way to remove encryption? I don't care if removing encryption wipes my data, I keep everything backed up to a pair of SANs in my home. (Yes I'm that guy that has an enterprise environment in his own home, because he can)

I just went through this process... I encrypted my phone's internal SD because my company email needed it encrypted. If you do this, your SD card becomes useless unless you encrypt it as well. I suppose if you have everything backed up separate from your device AND external SD card you could do so. But from my understanding there is no way to reverse encryption easily. I had to reflash a stock ROM using odin and then restore from my thankfully un-encrypted external SD card.
What is your reason for encrypting?

That sounds complicated and annoying. I record my phone calls, and I'd rather keep them encrypted, considering the recorded ones are related to business. I could just store the recordings on the external SD card. You said you can't use external SD if the internal is encrypted, unless you encrypt both, but can I encrypt just the external SD card? It's probably a lot easier to decrypt the external SD card, since I can just stick it in my computer and format it, or would Android not work properly if the SD card suddenly came back blank, and not encrypted? Thanks
Hello everyone. I recently underwent a forced upgrade to an LG Optimus F3 after my Kyocera Rise almost started a house fire. I am trying to get all my apps on the thing and everything has gone smoothly. However when I tried to install FIFA 14, which is a large app, I receive an error message.
i imgur com/xhlUueG.png
This is baffling, since I have over 25 GB of space remaining on the card.

Any advice on how to resolve this problem would be appreciated.
Things that may be ****ing stuff up:
-I literally took the SD card straight from the other phone and put it in this one.
-I have been installing a lot of stuff today.
-I don't really know what else.
Do you have Lucky Patcher installed on you're phone..?
If you do, stop it from running and wipe LP cache... And try again...

No, I do not. Would you recommend I install it?
I thought the problem might be coming from the fact that the SD card was used in another phone. So I used the Erase all Data option in Settings > Storage, but the problem persists.
Can anyone help, or do you need more info?
Maybe I need to format the card another way?
And pardon the double post, but here's another screenshot, this time of ES File Explorer.

Is it normal for there to be two directories there?

I could really use some help figuring this out. I used Aparted to delete the partition and create a new one but still no change. Is there anywhere else or some other subforum where I should be posting this, or is there a way for me to figure this out on my own?
Does your phone detects your SD card or are you able to move apps to SD card???

Well, it shows my SD cards under Settings > Storage, but I'm not seeing an option to move apps to SD on the app menus.
I also hard reset my device, but apparently the problem still persists. When I get home imma try the other SD card and see if there's a change.
No change with the other SD card, so it must be a phone error. Any ideas?

Is your phone currently rooted??? And Aparted is an awesome software. your not using the android app to partition the sd when a pc should be used to partition the sd with a micro reader???

Yes, I just rooted my phone. However, the problem persists, and I still don't have the option to move apps to SD card. I'm not sure what you're getting at in the second sentence though, sorry.
Okay what I mean by the second sentence is that Aparted is available for pc and as apk for android, which one did you use??? And when you partitioned the sd card what format did you use NTFS, FAT32, FAT16 etc.... and also did you wipe the sd prior to formatting it???

I used the android one, a fat32 format, and yes.
Okay, basically what I think is going on is that my phone just doesn't support apps on SD card. Something about the way my filesystem emulates an SD card or something, so it's not a capability I can just unlock from the phone. Anyway, I've been able to sort of work around the problem by using link2SD with an aparted partition, which looks like it's working perfectly, as far as it goes. If anyone else runs into a problem like this and finds a better solution please let me know!
Thanks for all the suggestions.
Awesome, and link2sd is one of best app2sd apks available....cheers man

My phone before this one was the RAZR Maxx HD and one of the nice things about it was that you could flash a rom and the internal storage at storage/emulated/0 would not be cleared. Does the M8 act the same way or do you need to backup stuff on the internal SD? May be a noob question, but the RAZR was the first android I had that treated the internal memory like a true SD card.

Yes, unless if you intentionally or accidentally wipe storage.

Yes, when you do a factory reset in TWRP it does NOT wipe internal storage. If you read the TWRP script while it's wiping it says "wiping data without wiping data/media". Data/media is where your emulated internal storage is stored. The only way you will wipe your internal storage is if you deliberately check the internal storage box in the TWRP wipe menu.
Hi, is it possible to swap the internal sd card with an external one? I have a rooted Sony Xperia J with locked bootloader. It is running Jelly Bean. I have a SanDisk Micro SD. Help?
How do I do it?
doperthancoke said:
Yes it is possible. But I recommend you not do that because it is quite dangerous, as it might hardbrick your phone.

Ok, thanks for the fast reply. So, how do I go around doing it?
Ok, but...
doperthancoke said:
Well.... The thing is, you'll be fine as long as you dont mess up. But its very easy to mess up. For example: if you wipe internal storage while using the mod, your phone is hardbricked. Another note: Various users have ran into problems while swapping internal and external sd (disappearing, corrupted apps, and your phone and apps might become sluggish if your sd card read/write speed is not fast enough,etc....).
There's a way around this, but its not quite the same thing. If you have large apps that store its data on internal sd (examples: games like Asphalt or large dictionaries), you can use apps such as "FolderMount" or "GL2sd" to move the apps' data to external sd and link it to internal sd (You're fooling the system into thinking that the data is in the internal sd, when its actually in the external sd). Of course, by using this method, you will not actually be swapping external sd with internal sd. And the apps are not moved, just the DATA of the apps.
If you don't care about the risks and the method I suggested above isn't good enough for you, and you still want to do it, search "vold.fstab swap external sd and internal sd xperia j" on the forum.
(Don't say I did not warn you!)

Ok, I kinda screwed up. I did what they told me to, but when I rebooted my phone, my external SDcard was not mounted and my internal one was un-mounted! Hence, I have access only to the apps in my phone storage... I did a backup and tried to flash the stock firmware but Flashtool told me that a folder could not be found and flashing failed... I still can use my phone, but alot of apps are gone. ;_; I can't even access Whatsapp! Any advice? Also, I do not have access to Root Explorer, and when I plug in my phone to my computer, 1 error message comes out: The process android.process.media has stopped. Any help? Plus, are there any good suggestions for common and cheap smartphones? Thanks for helping!
