[Q] ok google not working - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
How do you get the Google Now functionality to work?
I thought all you had say was "ok Google" with the screen off?
It doesn't seem to work is there something that needs turning on?

Change voice search to English US in settings, then it will work

So Google Now does work with the screen off on the Nexus 5?? I haven't received mine yet but from all of the reviews I've read online, they've all pretty much have said that it only works with the screen on, which I was disappointed about, and couldn't figure out why Google would leave that type of technology off their flagship.

Can you help us solve this problem? Can the screen on the Nexus 5 be off and us Google Now voice search like on the Moto X?

Lots of thing may be done using Google NOW my friend. but I dont know english in US accent.
I have been using Google now for alarms for the first day I got jelly bean and I don't have US English accent. It identifies my accent easily. even voice typing identifies my accent easily.

S VOICE

Can anybody tell me how or if I can get get S VOICE on epic touch? Im on the goodness rom? If not is there something like it?
Right now S Voice only works half the time anyways. It has some serious issues with server support. Check out the market for a few different "virtual assistants".
Nothing works better than Google Voice Search though.

Google Now is likely superior to s-voice in every way, but some features might not be implemented yet (and I haven't actually compared them, so here)
Hmmmm not sure .... I'm going to finish testing google now ..but so far s voice on goodness is running pretty flawless

I have never used siri tbh but I can say this. I only used svoice for a bit yesterday and compared to a lot of virtual assistant apps it worked pretty well! Still haven't dabbled in google now but it was OK!

Yah suri is the only thing applr has better then samsung atm tbh i would rarely use suri if i had it but i would like to be able to shut some isheep up.
Also i have not used google voice yet i have heard its better then suri but i wanna confirm that for myself.

S Voice completely sucks. gives almsot THE SAME results as Google Voice Search.
its really not even worth using. I would just stick to not using it, but if it really matters just get the iphone :/

Lol I defenitly have no interest in the iPhone ....I'm going to stick with freedom on android .... but like I said s voice does pretty well for the most part and I set many many appointments calendar invites and calls/texts with it today while driving ...so far not the BEST but not to shabby

I didn't find S Voice as bad as everyone says. It's not great, but I owned a 4S for awhile and Siri was really mediocre, especially when needed like in the car and hands free. S Voice didn't need to do much to be comparable, and heck it actually opens apps!
Eva/AVX is the most advanced voice assistant I've tried, especially paired with Tasker, but it's not as user friendly to the beginner.
Ok...Ok
If i want s-voice anymore theres a really nice working port here at xda

Spotify not showing album art

Can someone who uses Spotify confirm whether they can see album art in the app or the notification shade of the lockscreen. I can't see it anywhere. I'm wondering if KitKat broke it.

Yes, it has to be KitKat. I wrote Spotify service a few days ago and they replied that they're working on it.
The exact words were:
Hello Oliver,
Thanks for that.
Think you are absolutely right and thank you for getting in touch.
I have passed this on to the developers and we will look to fix it as soon as possible.
When this happens we send our best techies to the secret laboratory under an active volcano.
They wont leave till its fixed.
We get King Kong to guard the door so no one comes to distract the with awesome new music.
Kindest regards

Makes sense. When I notice an issue that im repeatedly answering, I write a stock response and share it with my colleagues so we don't waste time writing the same thing a million times each.
I use the same approach on xda

Google maps can do offline, check the play store for the add on.
Of course GPS is required for navigating...but there's a few that don't need data. I'm assuming maps can do it with the ad on. I haven't tried it tho.

Edge Panels/Feeds

Since the Samsung Galaxy App Store is horrible when it comes to finding what you are looking for I'm making this OP to discuss/share Edge panels/feeds. If you have one that you find useful, or jsut want tot alk about them feel free to post below. I would like to see what types of extra functionality we can get from the edge besides media controls and other small things (edge feed)
I'm looking to try new things ones assuming there are more than the half dozen or so on the Galaxy App Store. I would like a edge feed for Google news, or maybe Google fit of possible.
I have there already a question. I saw in some Videos about the Phone a Football App but i couldnt find one on my own. Is there something like this?

What carrier? Many of the U.S. carriers delete and/or add pre-installed apps. Especially Verizon. Might want to search on Yahoo and see if you can find anything.
Got the phone this morning and here are my thoughts on the Edge...
I'm coming from an LG G3 which is the same size screen but because of the Edge the Samsung screen is definitely small but I guess it makes the phone narrower too.
Now, on to the Edge panels...
Why are there only 5 spots for contacts when you can have two columns for other things?
My feeling is the Edge panels are just a gimmick as I have been using an app called SwipePad for years and it gives me short-cuts at a swipe and very customisable too with add ons.
