Just seems stuck there.
It's part of the OS now, and it's not something you can really get rid of without using a custom ROM. I could be mistaken but I'm pretty sure it's there to stay on the "pure stock" Nexus 5.
If you change your launcher that will get rid of it. But then you loose "OK Google" listening functionality

You've never been able to get rid of that on the stock launcher.
The only way is to download/buy a custom launcher like Nova or Apex. Doing so you lose the 'ok google' from the homescreen and slide to google now, and all 4.4 features like the transparency.
Nova and Apex i'm sure will add the 4.4 graphics but the other features most likely will never be added.
Nova has supported gestures for years. You would not lose slide to now. Nova also has transparency support build in though I can't say yet if it works on 4.4
Ok Google May be lost but that is not certain. If it is reliant on the launcher.

I'm amazed android still haven't implemented the gestures of nova, like swipe down for notification bar. On these large screens it's vital

With the source for KitKat being available, and with it being a Nexus device, i honestly wouldn't be surprised if we see an update come down the line at some point soon from Nova with support for a lot of KitKat's features, even quite possibly "Ok Google"
Since I don't use google now the swipe and voice functions are no loss to me. On the other hand I will never use their stock launcher until I can move the search bar out of the location where it is and put it where I have put it since android came out. Really torques me that its immovable, I mean how many ways do you need to open up google now on the same screen for christ sake?

no you will not lose ok google listening functionality...go to google...settings...voice...ok google detection...check on "from any screen". it will work from any screen as well as on any launcher

Hotword detection works from any screen with the default launcher. But when I switch to using Nova, Apex GO and a few other launchers, hotword detection stops working. I can open search by tapping on the search bar or google now, and it will respond to ”ok Google" and work correctly. It doesn't seem to matter if I have the search bars turned on or off, it will not respond to the hotword with alternative launchers.
I can switch back to the default launcher and it works fine.
Has anybody found a launcher that works with hotword detection, or can let me know if there is something that I may be doing wrong?
BTW, hotword detection (or lack of it) is not changed by using Bluetooth. Stock launcher works fine both ways, alternative launchers don't work unless you open search or now.

The reason it only works with the stock launcher is because google fused the launcher and search into one entity, while with other launchers you need to manually launch search and then speak. Haven't seen any other launcher that works like googles own launcher.
Hot word detection is not meant to work on other launchers.

Well, that bites. As a professional driver, I need to rely on completely hands free operation. I love the personalization and other benefits of using other launchers such as nova, but I guess I'll have to stick with the stock launcher for now.
Thanks for your answers.

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, but I was curious about peoples opinions/preferences between these two launchers?
I've been using Google Now Launcher on my Galaxy Nexus for a couple of months and really liked it. After grabbing my M8, I installed Google Now Launcher on it, but I hear a lot of praise for Blinkfeed on Sense 6.
While the concept of Blinkfeed is certainly interesting, the link summaries in my highlights are vague or non-existent. I'm also struggling to find a way to do Google Search voice triggers. Adding a Google Search bar doesn't seem to provide this functionality. Overall, Blinkfeed seems to be a poorly done Google Now with social media integration. Are there any fans of Blinkfeed that can help me improve my experience?

I tried blinkfeed on my M7 for a few months until root came out. and switched to the google launcher.
I tried blinkfeed on the M8 for all of an hour before I switched to the Google Launcher again.
I'm in the same boat as you. I just wish I could get anything besides the HTC lock screen as I want pattern lock. But I don't want it to wipe my phone after 10 attempts.
I'm using Action Launcher but wanted to check out Blinkfeed. You can create a shortcut to Blinkfeed with Activity Launcher and use it like an app. Thought I'd give it a chance and still use my launcher of choice.

I hadn't considered that. I might just have to play with it that way. As an at a glance widget/page, I feel Google Now is far superior, but I'd like to play around with it and see if Blinkfeed is good for social media and the like.
I have enjoyed using Google Now launcher on my Rezound and my Nexus. I'm going with Blinkfeed and have moved the Google search as one of my five dock icons so I can get the equivalent at any time.

you know you can just swipe up from the bottom on any of the home screens and have google now anytime without using up your shortcuts on the bottom
If Sense supported custom gestures (I use swipe up to bring up the drawer, swipe down to see notifications, and double-tap to show the toggles) I would try it out. But I use those gestures ALL the time.
For those with Google Now Launcher, few questions(sorry for the sidetrack):
Is there more icons on the screen? I went to nova laucher for more rows of icons and no blinkfeed.
any issues with side loading?
where did you get the apk, (I can find one, I would like to have a know working version)?
Does the play store update the laucher after the install for updates?

Yeah, forgot about that; thanks for mentioning it. Ultimately, that's what I did, giving something else that precious 4th spot on the dock.
non transparent Nav bar on GNL
Hey guys. Did any of you getting this annoying semitransparent nav bar while having a Google now launcher on HTC M8 ?
I mean the original nav bar on BlinkFeed is completely transparent, also Google now launcher installed on any device so far (running KitKat) had a transparent nav bar ! What is wrong with GNL and HTC M8 ??
Check out this picks.

I really don't think viperone is what screwed your phone up as I am running it and have installed and re-installed about 10 different times when checking out different ROM's.
It sounds like user error to me.
What was your install process ?
Did you do a checksum on the download before installing ?
Only one time did I have a faulty ROM and it was due to a bad download as I forgot to do a checksum on it.

FWIW, I don't like either, I use Nova Launcher.
Freinds, we have seen Moto X responds on voice commands without touching the phone. Many of fellow Atrix 2 users may also want to have that feature. I don't know if any of the ROM has that feature but there is a launcher which makes this possible to have the touch less control on the Atrix 2. That is : NOVA LAUNCHER
Thankfully this feature is available in the free version. Nova recently added this feature in the launcher as Beta. Not all devices support this feature but it works on Atrix 2 with ease. I have tried it and it really works. I have also tried this feature on my cousin's MotoE but it din't work.
To turn on the voice command, first install and set the Nova Launcher as default launcher with 'always' option. Reboot after installation will be better. Now you need to turn on the 'Ok Google' hot-word detection in the Nova settings.
Go into Nova setting > tap on the “OK, Google” option > Turn the check box on and you are done.
Now you can control your Atrix2 without touching it like Moto X.
And do note that its a Google feature which won't work without internet connection.
Those who haven't used Nova launcher yet should know that this is one very lightweight, simple and fluid launcher yet provides lot of customization. It also comes as default launcher in Slim ROMs. Nova looks simple at first look but there are limitless possibilities of many other customization in the Nova once you understand what option does what. You can change icons, colours, animations and much more without straining the phone too much.
So let's enjoy the smartest feature of MotoX in the Great His Highness Atrix 2. There is no limit with this epic phone. Mu-ha-haa-haaa

Yeah, you just need to install the Nova launcher on any ROM you are using and need to set it default, thats it.
will try it in slimkat
Most recent update of Google Now Launcher also enables the 'OK Google' hot word detection on all supported devices so those who don't want to use third party launchers can also enjoy the voice feature now.
Just update your Google Now Launcher with latest version and your phone is ready to take voice commands everytime after OK Google hot word detection.
So I just got my Note Pro back from Samsung for flickering display repair. Well they updated my Pro to 5.0.2 which I figured was going to happen but I was almost at the end of my warranty. Now the "My Files" app is glued to the lower left corner of the home screen and I hate it. Does anyone know a way to get rid of it? I've been through the setting and enabled developer options but can't find a way to remove it. I plan to re-root but need to do some research on the newest root methods.
You can't get rid of it. I'd recommend switching to a different launcher I guess.
Different launcher......duh, why didn't I think of that. Thanks! I've tried a few launchers before in the past but didn't like them. Any recommendations?

I'be used both Google now launcher and the nova launcher. Both are good, Google is great if you love Google services and use voice, Nova I liked better for the note for less Google Ness and some cool options.

I tried z launcher for a while it was nice, its the nokia one, check it out too
Is it possible to remove the date and weather area on the pixel 2 home screen? It takes up a full row!
I also want this defeated.. maybe via substratum???
Nope, you will need to switch to another launcher, like Nova.
Nova has been sluggish for me. I'm not sure why.

Yeah that's odd. Nova has been perfect for me. @upperbladez There's also Lawn Chair Launcher on XDA that's a modified Pixel Launcher. You could try that. https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/lawnchair-customizable-pixel-launcher-t3627137

I haven't tried that one. Personally I use Nova and have been for years. It's always been stellar for me.
My main complaints with Pixel Launcher was that clock app as well as the inability to remove the Google bar at the bottom. I took people's recommendations here and tried Nova Launcher. No complaints...I even decided to pay for Nova Prime so I could enable the gestures and love the 2-tap screen off, using the home button to launch settings, and the swipe down to pull the quick settings. I haven't noticed any notable lag and it doesn't appear to use that much more memory than the Pixel launcher did.
Second Nova. I bought the full version years ago, and it's fantastic.
Well I've been using Nova for years with prime. It's my go to launcher. But lately for some reason. After a day or two. There's this Nast y stutter when I open apps. When I use pixel launcher, it's smooth like it's supposed to be. Even if I close the app and open it right after it still does it. Those things bug me..lol no oun intended. So I'm just waiting for the next update. I was gonna set it up right now without the beta. I'll report back.
Anyone know a launcher which will hide the navbar. I know lineage OS has the option to hide status and/or navbar.. I don't feel like using the adb hack to go immersive mode, would be nice if a launcher offered the option
I wonder if they'll allow you to remove it in Android P. Some things they do are so illogical I don't get it.

I have DP-3 and it is still there. Things will change with the final 9.0 release but it looks like this is here to stay.
Lol why do they do that? I don't understand
Is this still unale to be removed on android 9? I need to update but have to root it so I'm being lazy.
It's there permanently by default, though of course there are many apps that allow you to toggle immersive mode without root so if you want to hide it it's very simple to do so.
