Different Sprint MVNO's are stating they can or can't activate the Nexus 5 purchased from the Play Store. RingPlus has stated that if it's sold for Sprint they can activate them. Ting has stated they can not activate the Nexus 5 from the Play Store, but will be able to activate Sprint Nexus 5 phones sold by Sprint.
I'm on RingPlus and my hopes in ordering the Nexus 5 was so I could go with any BYOD carrier in the US. I got my shipping on the Nexus 5 from the Play Store already though
Does anyone know if this is BS? Or will the Sprint Nexus 5 phones only work with Sprint? How would an MVNO know if it was from the Play Store or from Sprint?

As of now, no one knows for sure...but we'll just have to wait and see from the people that ordered it and plan to use it on RingPlus etc.
As the phones come in I'll be interested to see how Sprint MVNO's treat them.
Ringplus
Seems like some are having success activating on Ringplus

According to the Ting blog at https://ting.com/blog/ they are testing the Nexus 5 now. They've successfully activated some using SIM's purchased from Sprint. It's a "stay tuned" situation.
Vice versa...
It's actually the opposite... We can activate Nexus 5 devices that are purchased from the Play Store but not Nexus 5 devices that are purchased from Sprint (which includes the models at Best Buy and on Amazon). We have several dozen folks with the Nexus 5 right now in our sort of open beta (well, really it started as more of an "open alpha").
There are some issues with LTE in certain areas, but otherwise there are folks with MMS, 3G/LTE, and obviously voice/SMS up and running. Roadblock right now is getting a Sprint SIM card, which are in short supply and are required to activate with Ting.

Probably. They sell the N4.

They're the ones that surely will
Unless you want to do the T-Mobile monthly payment plan, why not just buy it cheaper directly from Google. T-Mobile going to raise to price to $500 anyway.

Its not a for sure guarantee, The nexus 4 is the first google device since the G1 that they sold in years. It's a 50/50 chance they skipped out on all the other nexus devices, I personally hope they do carry it but who knows with t-mobile

Google sells the phone unlocked so all you need is a T-Mobile sim if I am not mistaken.
yep google sells completely unlocked you just need your sim
You can get a nano sim for the Nexus 5 for T-Mobile here.
You can buy x1 or x2 and use the promo code OCTSIM for the next day or so to reduce the price to $0.99 each. I bought x2 and it cost $2.12 total with tax added.
The thing about T-Mobile sim is they only activate on one device (my experience, YMMV). I activated a prepaid T-Mobile sim on my Nexus 7 (2013) and the sim would not work on another Nexus 7 3G tablet. I tried the same thing using prepaid AT&T sim and this sim worked on both devices. Therefore, I think there is a limitation on T-Mobile sim only working on the device originally activated, or at least this appears to be the case for a prepaid T-Mobile sim. The big advantage of prepaid T-Mobile on Nexus 7 (2013) is working tethering.
Also, if you activate a T-Mobile prepaid broadband (data only) on the Nexus 7 (2013) you get first 30 days & 2GB free data (if using new account email, and you swap sim like AT&T and use new broadband (not link above) T-Mobile sim you get another first 30 days free on Nexus 7 4G, lol). Its not relevant to this thread, but I thought to mention it because there could be some free offers with Nexus 5 from any carrier, too. No idea.
Since there is a T-Mobile $0.99 per sim promo every few months I do not consider a T-Mobile activation limitation (only works on activated device at least on prepaid) to be a big problem. YMMV. But, at this price its worth getting one or two extra T-Mobile sim just in case you want to test some carrier options on Nexus 5.
These sim do not expire until sometime in 2015.
Good luck.

Love the way assumptions are made for no apparent reason...... I wouldn't be surprised to see the cost be within $50

Not true tmobule was selling the N4 for almost 489 full price
T-Mobile is indeed getting the Nexus 5, here's the sign up page https://explore.t-mobile.com/google...FwytwzpCjCfFBj5ywywT&AID=11031750&PID=6147683
I missed out on the play store orders today, was considering picking up the Nexus 5 at Sprint since they will have 32gb in store, knowing T-Mobile, I doubt they will carry the 32gb in store. I got a $100 sprint gift card not going to use, so was willing to buy a off contract unit from them to use on my AT&T prepaid. You guys think the Sprint model will be unlocked out the box or will Sprint locked their Nexus 5 for international sim cards only?
Sorry, meant to post this in the Q/A forum, could this thread get moved.
I hope this is the case. I want to play around with some of the prepaid GSM carriers and their coverage. I'd like to just pop in a sim and flip it to the GSM carrier in settings somewhere.
So I preordered 2 nexus 5s yesterday on the sprint website, one white and one black to upgrade from g'nex. Sprint I'd the only carrier we have available here so i figured id try to save some cash instead of off the play store. Wondering since it has a gsm antenna if it'll roam on at&t when I leave home.

No you will not roam on att.
So I called around to all my local best buy stores here in Louisville ky. A few of the stores say that they have the phone now. My question is, If I go buy the phone which is listed as a sprint phone, can I take it and use it on att?
why wouldn't it work? its the same phone.

There is going to be atleast 5000 threads like this for the next 1.5 month. Along with what simcard size it uses.

Yep. It's kind of ironic that so many folks buying a google phone can't figure out how to use google search.
There needs to be a big huge freakin' banner ad or something on the Nexus subforums that says "ALL NEXUS DEVICES ARE UNLOCKED FROM THE FACTORY - YOU CAN USE THEM WITH ANY CARRIER REGARDLESS OF WHO YOU BUY IT FROM" basically.
Yes, we know Sprint is a CDMA-based carrier like Verizon, but the Nexus 5 for Sprint is still the same phone because the Nexus 5 supports GSM/CDMA/LTE out of the box.
The simple answer to the OP's question is "Yes, if you buy the Sprint version free and clear (since you'd be crazy to but it for Sprint use then start using it with AT&T and still have to pay the Sprint service costs) you can then use it with AT&T or most anybody else (except Verizon it seems)."
That's why the free and clear price for the Sprint model is $449 - that works out to $149 for the phone subsidized by Sprint so if you buy it then cancel, they hit you with the $300 ETF (early termination fee) which ends up with you paying that $449 anyway 'cause $300+$149=$449.
See how that works?
So I got this email from Freedompop about a $150 Nexus 5. Turns out its a sale or something on Choxi... who I have never heard of and don't seem to have great reviews.
https://www.choxi.com/daily_deals/v...era_smartphone___cdma_unlocked___refurbished?
It also says the phone will not work on AT&T/Tmobile. I was under the impression that all Nexus 5 phones would work on AT&T Tmobile or sprint?
It's refurbished man, actually expensive, considering the fact...
