Like many of you, I upgraded from the Samsung Vibrant to the G2X. One of the things I really miss with the Vibrant is the detail to colors in the address book and phone navigation menu's. There is a lot of talk about Gingervread on this phone and I was just wondering of someone can tell me what we can expect from this update?
- Better Exchange Client?
- Better Calendar Client ?
- Better Contacts Client?
- More options for adding different accounts?
- Better performance?
Thanks
Max
It's mostly backend things and some slight UI modifications. The change from Froyo to Gingerbread was more noticeable on my GTab than it was on my phone.

Supports for NFC (High Frequency High Speech Data Transfer in short range)
Support for WebM/VP8 video playback, and AAC audio encoding
New audio effects such as reverb, equalization, headphone virtualization, and bass boost

I recommend downloading Go Contacts as your contact/phone manager and, if you like Facebook Photos as your contacts, use SyncMyPix. At least thats been my favorite one so far, in large part because it's a knock off of the one on my HTC Incredible. I know everybody has their own preferences though.
Alas it's Android, hop on the market and customize the thing how you like it.

Great Reply - Thank you so much
I have installed the following free apps and they have made a very nice change to the phone:
Angry Birds (all versions) can't live without them
Business Calendar ( great calendar replacement)
Amazon app Store (for those free paid apps)
Go Contacts (great phone and contacts upgrade)
handsent SMS ( Nice text messaging replacement)
Ringdroid for customizing / making new ringtones
Wallpapers ( nice wallpapers
Zedge (nice rings and alerts)
I also installed the SPB Shell - I thought it was expensive but its pretty darn cool and this phone has the horsepower to run it well.
Now available in the Android market!

Gallery Connect is a Picture/Video app with extended features not included in the stock Gallery. Unique features:
Remote Image/Video display with UPNP/DLNA devices. This includes select 2010 and newer internet enabled TVs (LG, Samsung, Panasonic). It's a nice way to show off those holiday pictures on the big screen.
Support for JPEG, Canon and Nikon raw files (CR2 & NEF)
Support for direct reading from an SD card or any directory
Shows latest photos/videos at the top of the list
Setup:
Download
From the menu select Media Source (defaults to internal camera home) Note: /Removable/SD is SD card
Turn on Play To/UPNP Renderer Functionality on device (See next post)
Select Remote from the menu and select a device.
DLNA Devices Tested:
Windows Media Player 12 (Window 7)
LG 50PZ550 (Any 2011 internet enabled LG should work)
Panasonic DMP-BDTx10 Blu-Ray Players
XBOX 360 in Media Extender Mode
Western Digital Live Plus
Denon AVR-3311CI
Many, many more are compatible. Is your device supported?
See the official DLNA list at http://www.dlna.org/products/. Select "Play To" Receiver and Photo and/or Video.
TODO:
Slideshow. Should it hide the navigator?
Remote Images need to auto-rotate or zoom
No way to stop remote video playback (Work around: select a photo)
Remote playback is dumb. It doesn't check for device compatibility
Leaving "Remote" functionality on will prevent tablet from entering deep sleep
MTP support (direct camera connections).
Improve portrait visual support (landscape works best)
Deselected selected item on Media Source change
Add fling to change images
Notes:
Should work on any Android 2.2+ device
Remote functionality requires a Wifi enabled Android device and a UPNP/DLNA Media Renderer on the same network (LAN).
Local video playback is delegated whatever media player you may have installed.
Photo/video support is highly device dependent. As a generally rule, anything you can play off a USB drive should work via DLNA. Videos shot on phones/tablets seem to work well. Canon .mov video files seem to have audio issues on many devices (why they did not use MP4/AAC is beyond me)
Please click some ads! This is a fully functional version and I've spend 100s of hours on it. I'm not asking for your money. Just a little of your time. If enough people do it, I may be able to get a new USB cable.
Enabling Play To/DLNA
Gallery Remote should automatically detect your DLNA devices when you select remote, but you may need to enable their Media Renderer functionality. Here's how for select devices:
Windows Media Player 12 (Windows 7)
Click "Stream"
Select "Allow Remote Control of My Player..."
Confirm Changes (depending on security)
LG TV:
Turn on the TV
Select OK when it asks for permission
Panasonic Blu-Ray DMP-BDTx10:
Setup ->Player Settings ->Network ->Network Settings ->Remote Device Settings
Remote Device Operation="On"
Thank you. Works great!
Thanks for everyone that's trying it. I noticed there are a few crashes (Force closes). I'm going to attempt to fix them. I should have a new version up shortly.
Added 0.5.1 Fixes:
NPE From null Device From UPNP Parse timeout
Fixes NPE crash from MP4 with no create date
Fixed parse error from INT MAX VALUE received from UPNP Device
Added non-functional Slideshow button (Play)
Fixed copy/paste bug from chunkOffset
This is awesome...Now I need a NEW TV!,,lol..
Updated to 0.5.2
Added Slideshow functionality
Fixed crash on change Media Source with a selected File
Fixed only selecting Video caused a crash
Fixed crash on reading corrupt (zero length) or secured files
Fixed video check was using photo checked status
Updated to 0.5.3
Added Timeout for UPNPDevice Parser (should fix ThreadQueue overrun)
Updated JPEG parser to use a dynamic buffer length (should prevent BufferUnderflow)
Fixed Issue where refresh() would reparse all MediaFiles
Hopefully this release will fix the crash on scan (on start-up / after you enter the directory). If not, I'm going to have to add more logging...
Uploaded 0.7
New:
Manual Rotation
Remote Mirroring of rotation, zoom, and movement (very cool, if I do say so)
Improved Portrait Layout
Fixed:
Crash on negative count (corrupt file?)
Can't reselect a player was that was closed and reopened
Fixed "0" creatationTime causing video date to appears as Dec 31, 1969
Upload 0.7.1
Lots of bug fixes
Fixed mutliple issues with rotation corrupting the remote connection (related to Transformer bug)
Improved memory recovery on rotation/shutdown
Fixed issue with menu icons not being colored correctly (2.2)
Fixed issue where SSDP Listener was not being shutdown properly under certain scenarios
I've been mostly testing the remote stuff on my Galaxy S. It appears that 3.2.1 has a bug where it disregards the manual rotation handling and recreates the Activity. This leaked the server connection and would cause Socket in use exceptions for subsequent connections. Took the opportunity to clean up the connect/disconnect handling.
I'm getting close to posting it on the market. Anybody have any issues? Any suggestions for functionality? Any name suggestions?
Update 0.7.5
Lots of little improvements
Fling to change images/video. It's still a little clunky.
Improved Remote dialog layout
Improved disconnect efficiency
Improved (optional) logging
Changed from "Remote" to "Connect" and "Disconnect"
Bug fixes
Fixed crash if tried to move/size empty screen
Fixed bug for XML elements with no children (Crash on device scan)
I now have all the crashes I've seen fixed. Hopefully, I didn't add any new ones. I've made crash logging optional. It will present a notification. You can just click "Ok" to send it. Please leave a short description as it will help me out.
Important: I am now passing the last 20 lines from the syslog on crash/parse error. I'm only sending logs from this app and the ActivityManager. I've added extra remote logging for JPEG parser issues. It will send me the name and path of the file, but not the picture. It will send up to 3 parser logs per session.
Update 0.9
Lots of improvements
Improved start up time on large set w/status notification
Faster (mostly) stutter free thumbnail display
Removed logging and ominous permission requirement
Added Share, Camera & Exit
Auto detect of external media (SD/USB) insertion
Android Media integration (now default)
Improved icon scaling
Remote play no longer blocks, it queues the last request (no more server busy errors)
Ads
I haven't seen any crashes, hopefully I can fix this with the new version
Update 0.9.5
The last release was supposed to be the the final release, but I ended up making some major changes. Lots of new networking code.
Mostly performance and bug fixes to many minor to list, but here are the major ones:
When playing a video, you will now get a seekable progress bar and the ability to pause (stop) a video
Forced the screen to stay on during slideshow to prevent SD unmount (and app crash)
Rewrote network stack to improve device detection, play position accuracy and player notifications
Fixed bug with NOTIFY (Should improve compatibility/stability)
Reverted to my JPEG thumbnail parser
I saw no crashes with the latest version! Let hope this version is as good.
Update 0.9.6
Some minor fixes and annoyances resolved:
Wrote a custom layout handler to handle ad/video progress base location. Faster, fewer listview invalidates
Changed picture filter to ignore images <32k as opposed to specific file names.
Use my mp4 parser to agument Android's for better resolution detection.
Fixed issue where the TIFF parser was reporting errors on files < buffer size.
Hopefully, I'll get this on the market in the next month.
What's next (version 1+):
Pro version (no ads)
Better fling transitions (like Gallery)
Thumbnail view for mass operations like import (especially raw), upload and delete
Picassa (or other) image net source support
Print
Gesture based rotation
Mock ActionBar for Android < 3.0
Suggests?
Update 0.9.6.1
Fixes a couple of force closes
A tail of two releases. I've post both 0.9.6.1 and 0.9.6.1d. The "d" stands for debug. In the event of a parser crash, version "d" will send the EXIF header as part of the debug. The EXIF header primarily contains camera information at the time of shoot. It may contain things like your name, your GPS location at the time of shooting. It doesn't contain anything sensitive like user names or password. It's the same information you send when you upload a picture to Facebook or Picasa or e-mail a photo (minus the actually photo). I've gone through hoops to make sure it does not upload any part of the visual image.
I encourage the debug version as I still have a few crashes that I can't seem to nail down. I will not share the information.
Update:
Thanks! I've now found a couple of problems. First, some apps are naming GIF files a jpgs (arg). Second, some cameras are writing invalid type tags. I'm updating my code to ignore them as per the spec.
Update 9.7
Oh well, "final beta" is out the window at this point.
Enabled hardware acceleration (Image size must be < 4MP on Tranformer). Watch those thumbnails fly!
Removed custom preferences in favor of Android standard. Sorry, your old prefs will be lost.
Add new prefs for slideshow delay, hardware accelaration, max image size, remote scaling, and thumbnail list size.
Add the ability hide thumbnails (configurable by orientation). Portrait disabled by default.
Improved fling (still needs work)
Smoother transition on undersized scaling.
Improved remote scaling
Made refresh smarter
Improved handling of bad EXIF formats
Added Google Analytics
Removed all non-crash debugging. Thanks for those downloaded it!
What's left before I hit the market?
Improve fling (complicated)
Expose extended EXIF info
Figure out what will be in the pro vs the free version.
Ironically, I'll probably publicly release on BlackBerry before Android.
Update 9.7.1
Mostly bug fixes
Fixed issue where rotated items would not recenter if sized below frame size
Fixed crash due to playing an invalid item
Added check for 0 could EXIF size (in attempt to resolve out of memory crash)
Added experimental Cloud Print
Release Candidate 1
Well, it's been over 6 months in the making, but here it is. I would consider this version shippable. What's new:
Complete re-write of the touch engine, more natural fling and movement.
Complete re-write of the display engine. Images now optimized for your display for fast drawing and a crisper look.
Faster remote display
Fixed issue with Denon receivers hanging.
Too many others to list.
Release Candidate 2
Ok. Only 1 crash after a week.
Fixed MP4Parser crash due to buffer under run (I think)
Changed Name to Gallery Connect as Gallery Remote was taken. Unfortunately, it will not replace the old app. You'll have to uninstall it.
Updated Icons and Visuals
Fixed a duplicate HTTP Header issue.
Got my Google Developer account. Hopefully, I'll be putting this on the market next week!
RC2a
Ooops. Forgot to enable crash reporting in RC2
Hopefully, this will be the same as what goes on the market.
Fixes:
Smooth transitions are fixed
Fixed a crash issue if an MP4 doesn't have a MOOV record (crash on scan)
Hopefully fixed a buffer underfill issue (crash on connect)
Created new packages for the free and paid versions. This should be the final package. You'll have to manually uninstall the old version again.
Fixed a crash if you disconnect from Wifi and then attempt to reconnect if Wifi still hasn't been established.
New things and improvements in Sense 4.0:
- Landscape mode now also in home screen (with optimized buttons etc)
- No on-screen buttons (as on Nexus) but will adopt the 3 buttons (prev. 4)
- 3D Task manager
- Better lockscreen, with better integrated notifications, to-do-lists, notes, contacts etc.
- Updated Email client with threaded messages and improved layout (over all better email)
Smart Sync technology which syncs your email based on your usage habits
- Better Browser, with Read later and Watch later functions. Introducing a new Reader feature.
Reader:feature in browser strips away ads and other useless web clutter
Read/Watch Later: feature in browser saves content in a widget which can be accessed at a later time (even offline)
- Guest mode, lets your friends only test some basic stuff (no phone, data, and special apps)
- Better Camera - when it detects a face, it takes 5 pics and chooses the best one. (I guess a new version of Amaze cam?)
ImageSense: auto focus is 0.2sec, shutter time of 0.7sec
Dual Shutter Camera (video record and take photo at the same time!)
- DropBox integrated (25 GB for 2 years for free!)
- Beats Audio will be universal, meaning allowed in any 3rd part apps (Spotify, YouTube, Pandora, VPlayer, etc.)
- SoundHound seems to be integrated in the music app! (see pic attached in 1st post)
- SkyDrive integration (Microsofts cloud storage 25 GB free)
- Scrollable wallpapers are back. Changing wallpaper.
- Carousel and 3D effects are gone (to speed things up)
- New sounds (notifications etc)
Overall, loosing some of the bloated feel, and now being more grown up with improved speed etc.
reserved for later
