Just curious does the nexus 5 have properly functional usb org? I know the 4 had issues and I'm seriously considering this phone so I want to know going if it'll work.

usb ORG ???
USB OTG? I assume?
It should. It was mentioned in the leaked service manual. It was supposed to be the in N4 but it wasn't powered so the device had to be powered itself which nearly defeats the purpose of having USB On-The-Go functionality. I am pretty sure Google wants this included.
That being said, I do not have the device yet. But I made the assumption myself that it will be a feature. I am planning on getting an USB OTG and a small HDD so I can interchange movies I want to watch.
If it doesn't have USB OTG, well even if it does, I might get one of these: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DR8LBAK...UTF8&colid=FM53JINJQWF5&coliid=I1XFD8MJC41TD0
I guess I believe native OTG will work, but I bought this http://www.amazon.com/RAVPower®-Wir...=1383381104&sr=1-1&keywords=ravpower+wireless just before the USB host "dirty" fix was engineered for N4. Very flexible--power bank, SD case and flash drive ports, broadcasts to mutliple devices/formats simultaneously, and allows web pass-thru when web Wi-Fi is available.

Interestingly, OTG isn't enabled by default in the kernel, so the stock kernel shipping out with the phone definitely doesn't have OTG support.

I hope that's the case and that it just isn't enable yet

I would like to use USB Thumb-Flash Drives like they are doing with the Nexus 7 with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. It is the GT-P3113 using recent CM10 - Android 4.1.1. I have tried the USB connector as noted below to connect the tablet and with its OEM cord to a USB drive and does not work or recognize it. I have used other drives and have tried using Stickmount app. I have tried to search for specific info, found some post that the idea is possible but can't find any details how. I have seen a possible connector USB OTG but don't know the difference. Any details as to how would be much appreciated thanks.

You need a USB OTG cable (the gender changer may work, but im not sure it will enable host mode, the otg cable definitely does). You can get them for two pounds / dollars on ebay. I am using mine with a 32gb usb stick.

Is there a trick to get video output from the blaze? hdmi or vga or anything at all? I'm surprised because it works on the galaxy S and I though they were almost identical phones except for the processor.

Actually, the Tmobile GS2 has the exact same processor (the 'normal' gs2 soc doesn't support hspa+42 and tmobile wanted the higher network speed over higher clock). From what I understand, there is no way to get video out of the blaze.
If you are trying to play it on pc there are a few software apps that can stream like VLC and such. TV... pretty screwed. I hear even the mhl adapters arent working for our phones either. Sorry
With Android 4.2 is a feature called Miracast or something close to that, pretty much just lets you stream to WiFi TVs.
True we are screwed. I was under the impression there was no MHL support on the blaze, and thus, it will never work.

Has anyone tried plugging flash drive into the phone with a mircousb to USB female?
I wanna get a converter but if HDMI doesn't work, I doubt that connecting external storage would work...

I haven't tried it (but can tomorrow), but I don't see why external storage wouldn't work. What you'd want is a USB on the go adapter to basically act as a host-mode interface for the phone to the storage.
I bought one of these adapters for less than $1 a piece, shipped. Well, I guess actually I bought 3 (they were really cheap) because I wanted to play with all sorts of things, including controlling my DSLR with one of those DSLR apps
Using this method and a USB hub, there's no reason that you shouldn't be able to successfully add all sorts of stuff like extra storage, mouse, keyboard, etc.
Mind you the host OS (read: ROM) has to support it. CM should support most of that out of the box. I don't know about stock based roms.
Yea I was gonna get it for my camera and other things but wasn't sure if it was capable of doing it.
I remember how on my Samsung Vibrant, the TV-Out feature worked by plugging a RCA cable to the headphone jack...It doesn't work on the blaze though. Just FYI
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T769 using xda app-developers app
Sure are a lpt pf TV-out and OTG files in ALL the roms........
USB OTG should work fine. That is built ib and works for me with a powered hub.
I tried compiling MHL support into the kernel, which works, but nothing on the TV. I think there are parts missing in the ROM for it to work.
Can anyone confirm that the Nexus 5 will support (out-of-the-box) digital audio out using a USB OTG cable? I'd like to connect the N5 to a DAC. I've seen it mentioned that KitKat will support this, but haven't actually heard first-hand accounts that it works, specifically with the N5.
Thanks!

I guess I'm the only one interested in connecting my phone to an external DAC. I ordered the N5 anyway and will test it out as soon as I receive it. I'll post back my results as soon as that happens.

I just saw this thread and I care deeply about this. First thing I did when I turned on my Nexus 5 today (after installing the required update, of course) was try my USB DACs, the hifimediy sabre and Fiio E07k.
Neither worked. When you plug them in, and have your headphones connected to the DAC, you hear a click. But then you go to play music, and the music comes out of the phone's speakers. I even tried putting the phone into debugging mode. No dice.
Did not try the USB Audio Recorder Pro App because I have no desire to use that clunky app, I simply want to easily use my USB DAC via OTG with my new Nexus 5 and after that leak a month ago from the Android 4.4 dump, my hopes got up. They have been dashed now.
hey guys,
Just plugged my E17 in and no go in google music. I'm assuming this means no 24 bit support in kit kat.
Thanks everyone. Unfortunate news. No USB audio and no aptX -- the N5 is not an audio lovers device!

Hi, if it's not to much of a hassle, can you try the e17 with usb recorder pro trial? i have an e17 and a nexus 5 but no otg cable. The suspense is killing me :crying:
To further confirm -- received my N5 yesterday. Hooked it up to my Audio-GD Compass DAC via USB OTG cable, and no dice. Phone detects nothing, and the music continues to play out of the horribly tiny built-in speaker. There's got to be some way to get a decent digital (or even line out?) signal from this phone??

I will ask to kernel devs if it is possible add usb audio support into mod kernels.
Bye.

Just wanted to bump this thread as I'm also very interested in getting my Nexus 5 to work with a USB DAC without the ridiculously designed UARP app.
I would also be interested in following what happens both with kernel support etc.
also interested in support for USB audio

While USB OTG may be enabled by default (for mass storage use, etc.), there is no audio signal being output from the N5 when using a USB OTG cable. I'm using an externally powered DAC, fwiw.

I don't know if it works or not but USB audio output was merged with CM11.0 last by Cyanogen himself (Steve kondik).

So maybe it is a software thing.
OK, so when grossing eBay I see listings that say "Male to Female" or vise versa, but I'm quite the USB OTG n00b... What does this all mean and how can I be sure which USB OTG cables support the Nexus 5? Thanks in advance.
Another thing, what's the deal with £1 OTG cables vs £3 ones? Is it just the build quality difference or do the higher end ones have more functionality? (Sorry about the £'s, I'm Brit! )
Answered:
a USB OTG is a USB OTG, there is no right out wrong... The cheaper ones are just because of build quality difference, but you don't need good build quality as it is just a USB OTG cable, so go for the cheapest one possible!
Franco Kernel supports OTG, but you need StickMount to mount the flash drive.

An otg cable is an otg cable. There is no right or wrong. All otg means is that it has pins 4&5 bridged to enable host mode on the device.
The typical gender cable is USB A female to microUSB male. This is what I use.
The USB A female is just a standard USB port like what you would plug a flash drive into.
The micro USB male is the end that goes into your phone. Like the end of your charger.

Is it possible to use the hdmi out and connect a usb peripheral? I have a bunch of lapdocks laying around and it would be cool to be able to use them with this phone with a couple adapters.
Lack of replies make me think this isnt possible.
Yes. With the right mhl adaptor it is entirely possible.
As far as controlling them with the lapdocks.... No. We dont have the software needed. You should still be able to display to them though.

I think the mouse and keyboard on the lapdock is just usb. So as long as i can get it all wired right I think it should work. Any idea what the right MHL adapter is?
I wouldn't risk it tbh. You would have to splice and dice. If i remember correctly, the laptops are made for a dual connection, ie. HDMI and USB at the same time. I'm not sure that this phone is capable of that, seeing as the USB and mhl have to go into the same place.
I think I remember seeing someone trying this before and it failed.
Just about and HDMI adapter on amazon should work. The one I got years ago cost me maybe $8 with shipping.

sorry thought this was on the g2 q&a my bad
Using a Samsung micro USB - HDMI worked fine for me using the GPE rom. I was able to have my screen display on my TV with no issues. I was hoping to use this to stream FIOS Mobile to a Hotel TV. Unfortunately, when FIOS Mobile sees an HDMI connection, it won't stream
You do need to power this connection. If not, you'll get nothing. This is the cable I used...
So maybe my original post wasnt clear? I know we can get hdmi out of the usb port. What i wanted to know is if there is an adapter that allows you do hdmi out AND connect a usb mouse or keyboard at the same time. On the samsung s4 or s5 or one of them, there was a media dock that allowed this. Not sure if the hardware is here on the m8 to do something similar.
EDIT: This thing: http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/EDD-S20JWEGSTA
I think samsung uses a proprietary 11pin mhl to do what im talking about. Pretty sure the m8 just has the normal mhl, 5 pin or whatever so this isnt possible. If anyone knows different let me know. I sure wish this phone had a dedicated micro hdmi port.
