Knock On / Knock Knock - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there,
the Nexus 5 is out now, so first question: Any new information or any experiences if the Nexus 5 also has this really cool Knock On / Knock Knock feature like on the LG G2?

most likely it does not have the knock knock thing, but since the hardware is so similar to the g2, maybe a port could happen

Doesn't need a port. A root app for the galaxy nexus and nexus 4 already has this. It's called touchcontrol and had the feature before LG had it

Who knows what the device can and cannot do. Google didn't think it was important enough to tell us anything about the phone.

Thanks for your replies... I meant "out of the box"... Nothing read about it yet... well let's wait until the first phones arrive...

I have mine (UK - Carphone Warehouse purchased this morning) and there is no knock-knock out the box.

Simple answer. No. It will not have it. It's a nexus device and is purely android without the additions of what a touch wiz or LG ui or sense would offer.
No it cannot be ported because it's closed source and is heavily reliant on the LG ui frame work

Does Nexus S durability last over 2 years?

I'm considering to buy a long lasting phone and Nexus S seem to be good, do you think it will survive over 2 years without casing? I'm good at caring phone, my current Sony Ericsson G900 is already over 2 years old and still functioning perfectly (it looks worn out clearly) and most people who have my phone broke within a year.
Nexus S is going to be my first Android phone, only thing that I don't like that you can't enable or disable flash in camera mode, it will decide if it should flash or not by it own. The design seem awkward but I could handle it.
I'm also considering Incredible S but it doesn't have enough developers and it's still locked, so I guess I should go for Nexus S.
What do you think, will it survive more than 2 years?

It probably would if your G900 did.
But the galaxy s II is more durable than both.

It depends of what you talking about ? If hardware wise maybe and Evo 3D , htc sensation or SGSII but about updates most likely this one , any phone that is in the market and is a high end device most likely get ice cream(next big update for android) , nexus s most likely get it before anyone else(besides maybe nexus 3) google is trying to get manucfactures to make sure their phones they get updates within 18 months since launch but first they havent sign a form or paper that says they will second they haven't said for how long after google releases the update they need to release it as well so for all I know they could take 6 months( Evo is getting official gingerbread after 6 months, rolling out June 6, and the Evo was one of the best android phones in 2010 and a best carrier phone ) So I would stick with google if you want timely updates , that's one of the reason I got Me a nexus s
He is talking about the phone durability and yes, I would say it should last 2 years. It's made of plastic but it's not poor quality, it's much better then the galaxy S.
Since its a Google phone, you can't go wrong on picking it, it will always have the up-to-date software and will always have developers, even after 3 years (well, unless its about hardware limitation).
Its currently one of the best (if not the best) single core devices on the market, its definitely future proof.
And the camera does have the ability to turn the flash on or off, depending on your preferences.
The design is gorgeous btw, at least I think it is. The curve form is unique and when the display is turned off it looks completely black and clean, I think it looks very elegant.

Thanks for your responses. Though there's one problem, I live in Moscow, Russia and there is no Google support store or something like that, if I need phone repair, it won't be possible?
Though I never need any repairs in past, so hopefully it will be same for Nexus S.

Don't use your rubles on a nexus s when its going to be outdated in a few months
Or, if you can't wait, then just get the GSII. Its what the nexus s shoulda been lol [just the only major letdown is...Touchwiz :'(] plus its available in the motherland, no?

my ns4g feels solid, but to answer your question, YMMV.

I love the note 3, nearly everything im looking for in a phone, but I want cyanogenmod, and there isnt an easy way to install it from a ma yet.
I like the HTC ONE, but im afraid it may be too outdated maybe?

Also no one can tell YOU what phone to buy for YOU. YOU have to compare specs, find out which features are important to you, what kind of UI if any you like, the reliability of the manufacturer, the construction of case, size of screen, camera capabilities...Why have someone tell you what kind of phone you will be stuck with for awhile?
No. No one can help you, we are on the nexus 5 forums due to being fans of nexus, so most of us will say nexus. You've already stated you're not interested in the nexus 5 due to a misconstrued idea about "poor battery life" so your in the wrong forum altogether.

I am sorry for posting in thread but you have not read my PM. Now your campaign and complaints against the Nexus 5 stops here. I recommend you go to your carrier's website and post on the community there if you feel like you need to persuade others not to purchase that phone. 99% of the people reading your posts here already have the phone so your constant tirade of complaining posts only serve to annoy.
This is a development site made by developers for developers. Be part of the solution, not part of the problem.

I feel being the only satisfied N5 owner around. I NEVER ran out of battery but I don't go through the day playing games or looking at videos, (some people have to work...)
If you already have a Note3, just keep it ! it's a very very desirable phone , like the N5 is for half the money.

Nexus 5 or other phone?

Hey,
I'm going to buy a new phone at the end of the month and I've always thought the nexus 5 looks great and appears to be great in performance.
But it's been a while since it has gotten released and I wonder if I should still buy it.
Are there other phones which are well built and have great performance, ofcourse in the same price range.
Currently I can buy the Nexus 5 for €360, seems like there's no other phone that can match this price with it's performance.
So my question is should I buy it, or get another flagship?
This thread will probably be closed really soon. You're asking in the Nexus 5 section, we've already made our decision and bought one. You ask here, most will automatically recommend the Nexus 5. You ask in the LG G3 section, for example, and they'll recommend the LG G3. Same goes for any other device section if you were to ask.
Make your own decision.

@OP: The only better phone that I see in the price range for you is the one plus one. But you need an invite to get one so it's a pain to get one. If I were you, I'd put in more money & buy an m8 (I don't give a damn about the camera).. Probably a GPE m8.

Which phone after a Nexus 5 ?

Hi everyone !
I actually own a Nexus 5, which I'm using since he's out. The thing is that I'd like to change, I really enjoy this phone, but the main problems for me are photos and battery. And of course the ''need'' to own newer devices.
I looked for some devices and I found some I'm attracted by, these are Samsungs : Note 4 or S5/S6, I don't know.
For now this is the Note 4 that I'd like. So I'm asking you to know if some of you own one of this devices and tell me how you feel with it after a Nexus 5 ?
Also are they as easy as a Nexus 5 to tweak ? (flash rom/kernels/unlock bootloader and root)
I know that they take longer to get the last updates, but I trust in XDA devs who can port everything in a day haha. They're like magicians for me.
And by the way don't be shy to discuss about other phones and advice me, I may discover new phones.
Thanks and have all a nice day [emoji1]
I went from the Nexus 5 to the One plus one and then to the Nexus 6 and now I bought a nexus 5 again. I love my nexus 6 ,and that is and will be my daily driver but for the days when I just want something smaller, the Nexus 5 will be there. I wish I never got rid of it and I found a deal on refurb one with a one full year of service from freedom pop for $200. So I thought why not.
---------- Post added at 03:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:23 PM ----------
What I'm trying to say is that you shouldn't feel a hurry to switch phones and the Nexus 6 is the bomb.
I'd go for a Sony. Probably a Z3 Compact. Is what I'm planning to buy anyway. Very lightweight skin with good battery life, looks and camera ?
I think I'm going for the xperia z4 when it's out next

So the rumors go. We'll know more in September if Google follows their normal release pattern. They'll have to file with the FCC by then if they plan on releasing in October/November. Right now it's believed Huawei will be the manufacturer but it's still way to early to now for sure.

I'd wait. You've got a OnePlus One, and I can't imagine you (or anyone) being dissatisfied with its performance and requiring something that's "more". If you just want something new/different to play with, grab an LG G2; they're unbelievably cheap now, and still one hell of a phone. Or a 2013 Moto X, for when you don't want a big ol' slab flopping around in your pocket.

Hello, eefo.
XDA-Developers is a good place, to get help to buy a phone, but there's a famous thread, where there's a high chance, to get help from some members.
Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/general/slow-motion-phones-device-how-to-imo-t2998500
EDIT: Nookie has already mentioned the thread... Sorry, haven't seen your post.
But what your phone you want, depends on your preferences.
