Using Straight Talk AT&T BYOP sim - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm currently using byop att sim from straight talk w/ the nexus 4. If you're about to go this route using the nexus 5, how's the LTE connectivity and overall signal quality w/ the phone? Think there may be APN issues? Or MMS challenges? I'm interested in upgrading cuz the lte piques my attention the most. But I wanna see what the straight talk crowd experiences first.
Edit: Here are APN settings gathered from this thread for Straight Talk ATT byop for your convenience.
Name: Straight Talk
APN: tfdata
Port: 80
MMSC: http://mms-tf.net **OR** http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: mms3.tracfone.com **OR** 66.209.11.33 **OR** mms2.tracfone.com
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: leave blank **OR** PAP
APN type: default, supl, mms **OR*** default, supl, mms, hipri **OR** leave blank
APN protocol: IPv4
APN roaming protocol: IPv4
From other forums I've read, if you're on an SIM that uses att.mvno for APN data, it means you're not provisioned for LTE network and need a newer SIM that uses tfdata for APN data.

I use Net10 Wireless with AT&T, $45 a month unlimited text, talk, web...what do you pay directly through AT&T a month for unlimited everything? I thought when I looked at them directly AT&T was quite a bit more so went with Net10.

Most are still waiting on the phone. Going to be a few days before they start arriving at people's doors.

LoL. Fully aware. There could possibly some lucky person who may have ordered swiftly and might receive it soon so u never know.

Yeah that's what I figured, no difference so no reason to switch.
I've seen some mention a $30 TMobile option but couldn't find that, as cheap as possible with just unlimited text/web is what I want, I rarely talk at all, maybe 50 minutes a month total, at most.

In my area, T-Mobile doesn't have as diverse a coverage than AT&T. So I went w/ the AT&T side of Straight Talk. Even if I'm in a situation where I got no data connection, I gotta at least be able to send a regular txt message. That $30 price was hard not to look at though but I'm happy w/ my current choice.

Wow, thank you for posting that, the free sims right now part.
No reason not to go ahead and get the micro sim while it's free, and for $30 why not try it out for a month and see how it is? Have a feeling TMobile will be bad here, but worth a try for $30 a month, and if it's terrible just go back with AT&T.
Shipping is also free, so it's completely free. The N5 still uses a micro sim right? Didn't even check that and ordered one already, but assumed it does.

Report here confirms micro sim.

The big advantage for ST is that you can occasionally buy 6 month cards for less than retail. I got a 6 month refill card for $220 through an amazon reseller. That brings my cost per month down to $36.67!
The deal is not always available, but if you use one of the deal sites (I like slickdeals) you can catch it.

I do the same thing. I look for deals on the 3 month cards and my monthly average so far is 37 bucks. I just have an itch to try the LTE network. The pings on hspa+ are a bit slow.

I'm on TMO but once you get the low latency of LTE (<40ms, and usually closer to 20ms) you'll never want to go back to HSPA

I have been using Straight Talk for a year and a half now and have the next year paid for getting a good deal on the cards.

It's quite possible someone is using an N4 with LTE on ST right now, and I'd assume that LTE on the N5 won't be any different than on the N4.
I guess the better question would have been "How is ST's LTE, in general, regardless of phone".

I have a T-Mobile and Straight Talk (ATT) sims waiting here to try them both out on my N5.. I'll report back. Apparently I should have "Excellent" coverage in Green Bay, WI 54302 on T-Mobile and the same on ST (ATT).
I'm going to go with whoever has the faster LTE service...

TMO doesn't have LTE here in Springfield but AT&T does, but I'm still going with TMO for $30 month compared to $45.
I get 22-26mbps download on HSPA+ on TMO and 28-32 on AT&T LTE, so it's worth the extra $15 savings per month for that reason.

Did anyone get Straight Talk to work with the micro ATT sim card with the Nexus 5?

I will be trying this tomorrow. I'm wondering if I have to order a new ST SIM card for the LTE to work. I have an older ST ATT SIM now, but I've heard conflicting reports about the old cards working.

Straight Talk APN Settings

Is anybody using this phone with Straight Talk? I'm curious if you can get LTE with ST or if it would be limited to HSPA+ ??? I'm assuming you need a special APN for the LTE. Any info would be appreciated, thanks!

Lte settings please
I've got a rooted skyrocket and have been given the runaround too many times by AT&T reps. The most recent time was last morning, when I asked for an old iPhone to be unlocked (as per their own statement)
I've decided to get the SAME coverage at half the price ($45).
All I'd like (not really need though), is the APN settings for the LTE network, if they have that, cause I live in an AT&T LTE city
Thanks in advance

LTE seems to cause less of a load on their network. I assume so because ATT has a higher limit on LTE, and cause verizon has been giving, grandfathered in, unlimited users, a free LTE phone. Well, those with very high data usage.
This makes me assume that they would want the same for the usage of MVNOs. That would cause them to have a ST LTE option.
These may have been a series of compounded assumptions (which is never a good idea), but i wish someone would look into it

[Q] one x prepaid?

Ok I have looked everywhere for a solid answer on this.
I actually bought this unlocked att branded one x for use with T-Mobile prepaid. I however didn't know that my data (even with adjusted apnpsettings) only got edge speeds. So I'm trying to find.prepaid alternatives .. I was told by att that gophone doesn't work with their 65$ 1gb data plan because it's a 4g phone. Is this correct? Also I've looked into straight talk however with Sims costing 50-90 dollars and uncertainty idk . Any reliable information on what I can do with prepaid with this phone AND have 3g/4g possibility please let me know ASAP.. thanks everyone

Definetly check out this website. If you see any pins in your area for 3G (HSPA+) maybe hold out until they bring more towers online. In my area they are adding a few miles of coverage per day.

What does that mean exactly, that the phone simply won't work at all (even for voice and EDGE)? Or that it will only work on voice and EDGE? Or it will work on 3G HSPA, but not 4G HSPA+?

My understanding is that ATT checks the IMEI of the phone accessing data and if it is a phone with 4G capability it blocks it completely. No EDGE, no 3G, nothing, no data access. You may be able to skirt by for a while until they track you down and cut you off, but it is only a matter of time until you are cut off. Voice should work.

So beat me if needed. I have a new att one x coming today. If i get it unlocked, and use a straight talk sim that is a tmobile sim, should i not get the same speeds as a $30 tmobile 5gig plan? I live in mpls and right now get great speed on my n4 with a $30 plan. Thanks b4 and after.
Short answer is probably not sorry
The n4 is pentaband and gets all of tmobiles bands. The att one x might get 3g on T-Mobile depending on the refarming in your area. Chances are it won't be as strong or consistent as the n4

[Q] Question regarding AT&T and Straight Talk..

So today I went in and set up a plan with AT&T on their mobile 2GB share plan(not prepaid). Got a sim and now awaiting my n5. I have been reading on here that Straight talk has a plan for $45 a month which includes LTE. So my question is, Will I get the same coverage, Same speeds on Straight talk that I would get from AT&T? If this is the case, I feel like its a no brainer to get straight talk instead. I am usually on wifi at work and at home, so I only need 2gbs.
Also, How would I go about setting up service on straight talk?

I went from ATT to ST. I get identical cell coverage (in fact, it even says AT&T as the carrier)
I notice the internet is slower - it looks like they throttle it by default. . Also once you hit 2.5gb of internet they will significantly throttle it.
However I am overall happy... Paying less than 50% and like you I am usually on WiFi.
You just order the sim from their website and put it in the phone.

well there was a whole thread on how none of peoples mms messages were not sending. mine didn't either. even though it clearly showed sent on my phone. even text sometimes failed. could it have been teething issues because of LTE just launching maybe. could have been my note 3 when I had it maybe. plus I don't want to be throttled and I want to use my data however I want to use it. plus when you send via text or mms your basically going through a middle man first when on a MVNO and sometimes things can get lost in transition. maybe it was AT&T? I I will never know. but I rather pay the extra 13 bucks its worth it to me rather then be aggravated.

Would I be better off doing Aio pro plan for $70/month or stick with AT&T mobile share w/2gb for $105 after taxes... Forget price, I'm more concerned about speeds and coverage for LTE.

[Q] Straight Talk T Mobile LTE

I have Straight Talk with a T Mobile SIM in my Nexus 5 and I am getting awesome LTE coverage, although my friend has the exact same setup and is only getting H data and not LTE. We are both using the same APN settings, and the only difference that I can think of is that I bought my SIM card more recently. I didn't think that the T Mobile SIMs on Straight Talk supported LTE, but I am definitely getting it and was wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same. If you are getting LTE, what are your APN settings?

That's what I thought, but I am definitely on Straight Talk with a T Mobile sim and am getting LTE data. Not just in my area either, since I recently took a trip and had LTE coverage in many major cities.
I can confirm that the new ST T-Mobile SIM cards support LTE. Received my new SIM one week ago and have been enjoying LTE speeds for the past week. Interestingly, the color of the SIM card was hot pink as opposed to the light pink T-Mobile SIM I used to have.

Thanks for this. I tried to contact useless Straight Talk support regarding this question. They didn't seem to understand it, sent me the at&t APN settings, when I called them on it, they sent me the non-smartphone APN settings. They said that yes, t-mobile does support LTE, not just H+ (but I didn't actually trust them to understand the question), however said nothing about needing a new sim card. I have the light pink sim right now.
However I'm still not entirely convinced. Here's a picture on ebay of what I assume is the new hot pink sim:
http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Straight-Talk-Micro-SIM-Card-T-Mobile-Network-/00/s/MTYwMFgxMjAw/z/b7gAAOxy3zNSlQHw/$_57.JPG
You can see clearly on the card that it admits "4g" is HSPA+, not LTE. I'm also suspicious because T-Mobile has a different APN setting for LTE, while Straight Talk does not. Has anyone checked the "Mobile Network Type" in settings to verify that you really truly are getting LTE? Could the hot pink be because it's in micro sim size? The at&t cards have a similar color scheme (light blue for full sized sim, dark blue for micro), and I think offering the Micro Sim size for t-mobile is new, but the internals of the sim may not be.
Can someone post a speedtest speeds result of their "LTE" speeds? My H+ speeds are very fast, so I don't know if there'll be much difference..

Please update us. From what I can understand it seems like they're only advertising "4g" as the H+ speeds.

So best place to get SIM card to insure i get LTE for tmobile?
thank you,

I ordered mine directly from the straight talk website but I think you can order one from Walmart
Just curious if anyone here has been cutoff by straight talk. I read the small print, and you are only unlimited on their web space. So technically they can cut you off if you use too much data.

Its unlimited 2.5gb LTE. Then they throttle you down.. Maybe if you blew threw all your 2.5gb in five minutes by downloading a torrented movie they'd shut you off. All your data in less then a day.

Ok cool. So as long as i order it from straight talk, i should get the LTE card? I need to order two and wanted to make sure before i do it.
Currently have the older card and i'm not getting LTE on TMobile. After reading through this thead, sounds like the newer cards will do it.
thank you,

Download/install LTE settings app. Run your test and look at the app. You can see this in your settings about phone status as well. What does it say you're connecting at?

In my personal experience, I can confirm you get throttled/data cut off on ST-AT&T sims.. It happen to me, but has never happen to me on a ST-Tmobile sim.
BUT YMMV...

Looks promising, you must be in a test area.

[Q] AT&T Throttling My Data?

I have had my Nexus 5 since the beginning. I am on AT&T of course. I pulled the sim from my HTC One XL and put it into the 5. No problems. Up until this week I think. Speedtest will not go above 0.56Mbps. I am in Houston with plenty of LTE service. I check my At&T account and they have changed the logo above my phone number. It used to show Android HTC. So, I figure that Att has figured out that i am not using "their" phone. I call them up and they say that the IMEI's do not match. The tech guy was cool. He said he was trying to help me. That nothing was going to change. He did a few things but no dice. I wasnt sure if i was supposed to tell Att anything as they might ruin my chances at having good service with an unlocked phone. Anyway, i have restored my phone, changed APNs, and now I dont know what to do.
I don't know but just curious does your accrual signal say LTE?
I didn't tell att when I switched from an iPhone. LTE was still fine

Download tellinfo app. Then switch to edge. Once you'll see E sign switch back to LTE/GSM. Should help

I just gave them my IMEI number and it all worked fine. I have a grand fathered unlimited plan too that was unaffected. I think Google made sure their phone would work with at&t.

I tried the Tellinfo app. What am I looking for? My signal strength is -106. It used to be around -85. I have tried the ATT PHONE APN and the ATT LTE PTA APN. Both are working the same. ATT is supposed to call back today. He said after resetting the phone, the last two efforts would be to send a new sim, and if that doesnt work, then its my phone. Now, I'm pretty sure it's not the phone. I also didnt have an option for Edge. THere was EvDo.

Well you do know if your on the Unlimited Data Plan on AT&T you get throttled down to about that speed after hitting 5GB .... .
Its probably data cap 5GB throttle city. It happened to me. I called ATT and they confirmed I was at 8GB for the month and had to wait till cycle flipped. After flip flying at "super fast" ATT speeds again.

You can always use the wap.cingular APN. Wont get LTE just 3G but you will be unthrottled Thats what I do! Which in my small town I get 10-11mbps down on 3G

I am on the Unlimited data plan. I didnt realize they would throttle me after 5mbs. I havent done any downloading of custom roms yet. I used to use data like crazy with my One XL and I never noticed any loss of data. I will try the cingular APN just for shiz. Thanks.
EDIT: I checked with ATT and yeah, my cycle ends either on the 7th or 8th and I have used about 6mb. So, fingers crossed for next week.

You're lucky. I'm using my N5 on T-Mobile and I lost my grandfathered unlimited plan. I had no data (but emails and SMS worked ... strange). After a week of communications and testing tech support claimed that the N5 was not compatible with the grandfathered plan (it did show up in my account on the website as Unknown with unlimited data). After upgrading to a metered plan my service is excellent.

Can you confirm what plan and rom you're on? I'm on unlimited lte plan and I USED to be able to do this but since switching to the Nexus 5 they won't even let me connect via wap.cingular on the nexus 5 (even on 3g). I have no problem doing this on my nexus 4 or my i9100 gsII, but either the nexus 5 or att has been blocking me since

That's what T-Mobile does on its grandfathered plans after 4.5 GB and on its new metered plans after you exceed your plan limit. Great, huh?
