Wondering if anyone tried any of these on AOSP 4.3.1 roms on the s3 yet? if so are they running right?
I've been using Hangouts for about an hour. Its working fine so far with texts, I haven't sent MMS yet.
I'm fairly certain I installed the newest Google keyboard but I can't tell since everything looks the same as when I last used Google keyboard a couple months back.

ok so far I have tried and got working:
Google Play Services (Install first for some of the new apps to work)
Hangouts (MMS does work, only with data connection on)
Keep,
Google Search (but it took away my dark slim theme)
Gmail would not install. Kept saying app not installed.
Still wondering if the Camera and Gallery apps are worth trying. I can't afford to have my camera messed up right now. Taking a ton of Halloween pics.
Play Service, Search and Hangouts working on TW 4.1.2.
The cool part about the camera is it doesn't replace your camera. You can try it and uninstall if it doesn't work.

If I've helped, please hit the thanks button
I would have rushed to install the new Hangouts app if it had supported Google Voice but since it doesn't I'm not in a rush. I'll just wait for the eventual updates through Play. Based on the 'warnings' to app developers who do VOIP etc with Google Voice I suspect that come next Spring we'll finally see Google Voice / Hangouts integration.
The app I really wanted to work was search. The current play store version is garbage. Constantly searching without results. I now use my browser exclusively. The N5 search app force closes when I press any key. Any ideas? I'm on Hyperdrive 16 with faux kernel.

MMS don't work to well on hangouts v2, I tried last night and it would send sometimes. It did take a long time to deliver when it did send.

I tried the MMS and it worked quite well. Still won't use hangout unless for video chats. Still curious about the camera and gallery. Any improvements?

If I may ask, what rom are you on? I know people had issues with Google now/search on Hyperdrive 16, as did I, but I fixed it with TiBu.

Nevermind. I ended up getting it to work. If anyone else has the issue, read the first couple comments in the OP article. Many people had it. Seems to be a language pack issue.

I've had a pretty solid day using Hangouts as my primary sms app. I've been moving too much at work to tell, but do you guys feel like Hangouts isn't vibrating or giving the notification ringtone at all? Again, just curious cuz I've heard rumblings before that Hangouts notifications aren't 100% reliable on AOSP.

On Bone Stock 3.4 hangouts, Gmail, camera, gallery, Google launcher, email, Google search, play store, all work no problem

Running the new launcher. Looks cool, logo's are bigger.
I followed these.
Swype to left and it's Google now. I don't see the point of a lot of screens, really digging the new layout.

Is anyone able to get the camera app to save the pictures to the sd card instead of internal memory. That is dumb if they don't let you change that.

What voicemail are you all using? Using better youmail and getting a high pitched noise and feedback. Annoying as hell. Not sure if its the rom or app. But the app worked on my other device.

Hmm I just got a Samsung Galaxy S3 and I was wondering the same thing
Been using Google Voice for the last year and a half on my old phone. It's one of the first apps I installed on the GSIII and it works fine, however the text transcription is laughably poor.

If you are using Google Voice, that's an option in AOSP ROMs. Not sure how well it works in TouchWiz.
the problem must be TW then. Have not tried an ASOP ROM
I was wondering why my version of Google search doesn't include Google now (with the cards). I have a nightly of cm10 installed with the 10-11 gapps.
My friend has a full version with cm10 on an HTC phone. Is it just the current development of cm10 on the s3 doesn't support the cards?
Thanks
It has google now. You must have messed up. Check the settings in the google search menu. You might not have opted in yet
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
I've actually noticed this as well. I can make a card come up if I search for like local weather but there's no place to set locations or favorites and cards never randomly come up for me
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
You have a nightly with gapps that are a month old? That could be your issue. If you're running a month old rom, then you most definitely will be missing features. I'd advise you to update your rom, and also you can update google search from the play store as well.
Google now updates through the play store. That isn't the problem

No, I think you misunderstood me. I am running the 11/7 nightly of CM10 with the 10/11 version of gapps. As far as i can tell the 10/11 gapps are the most current on goo.im unless I'm missing something.
Also apparently it asks you to opt in to the Google Now service when you first launch it, but I never remember getting that
If you tap on the microphone on the search widget you will be directed to the search app. In there hit the menu button to go to settings. Now turn on Google Now.
I get voice, search, and privacy settings. No obvious settings in any of them that would fix the issue

Open up Google Now -> Settings -> Google Now -> Make sure it's turned on (top right corner), and if it is, go into each category you need and make sure each is turned on as well.

I'm running VBRLJ1 leaked ROM and it appears I only have Google Search. I see nothing about Google Now anywhere. I've gone through all location settings, web history, etc.. it's all open for google to track me.
I also only get cards when I search for things. No option to "see more cards" or "see sample cards".
Basically I don't have Google Now and this surprises me. Anyone know of a fix for the leaked VBRLJ1 folks? I'm unrooted at the moment.
Thanks.
Same here on CM10. I'm beginning to think it's my university gapps account that is the problem. What kinds of Google accounts do you guys have?

If you just push the widget you won't get cards. Press the blue Google search app in the drawer. Then answer the 4 questions and opt in to it
Thanks for trying but that's the whole problem you never get the option to opt in and you never get the questions. I've tried full data wipes and the option just never comes up

Use titanium to uninstall the current Google search. Reboot. And install the one from the market
Tried it. No cigar. No questions, no opt in etc

yeah i ditched it. i mean i tried to use it. i really did, but it needs some work... ok it needs a ton of work and maybe another overhaul.
im using 8sms works nicely
I ditched it right away. Using the AOSP MMS.apk instead.
I'm using it, but mostly because I use hangouts messages over sms most of the time. Plus in getting use to it for once they incorporate Google voice since I have been using that for a few years already.

A little laggy when opening but it's fine. I like it.
Duh lol
ya
gosms for me always
I'm considering using AOSP MMS application. I do not use hangouts for anything. Although I have no issues replying to SMS, I find composing a new SMS cumbersome
Hangouts sucks to me... Not sure why they removed the stock messaging app and also why they removed the stock browser as well. I've been using Textra for SMS. It's lightweight with a bit more customization options than 8sms or the CM app.
I tried using Hangouts texting for about a week and then switched to ChompSMS which I had been using prior to getting the Nexus 5. The one thing I missed when I ditched my iPhone and got a Galaxy Nexus a few years ago was the jailbreak texting app called BiteSMS. ChompSMS is basically BiteSMS for Android, created by the same developer. Have tried other texting apps but have not found anything that is better for me.
Ditched it. I don't like having SMS and Chat in the same screen. I think that hangouts needs to implement tabs. Hangouts | SMS at the top... this would make managing SMS a bit easier. I went back to Handcent SMS.
ditched it from day one as well haha. using textra
I'm having no issues with hangouts, but then again, before hangouts, I only used the stock messaging app.

using 8sms here too
I went to Team Black Out's site to grab some blacked out apps. I'm having problems getting gmail & instagram. Its just a" txt " file.
EDIT: Haha! Jokes on me.Im correctly asking cause the inverted Google+ & Play Store is so much easier on my eyes.
I noticed that too on some apps. I just assumed maybe they hadn't gotten to them all yet.

Looking to buy a Nexus 5, but I refused to use Hangouts. Anyone been able to just pull stock\aosp mms.apk and sideload it, no root? Or does it require root to run?
In Play store: SMS Messaging (AOSP). That's what I use.

Alternatively you could use 8sms which is the AOSP MMS with some modifications.

I appreciate your answer but I'm don't trust playstore messaging apps like that, really looking to see if anyone had any luck with a pulled virgin apk being side loaded.

Not really a stock app but I found Textra to be very good. (Partially because you can change the notification icon, and the layout is very minimalist.

Open Hangouts, go to settings and log out of all associated Google accounts. Then, Hangouts will not send or receive "Hangouts" messages, only handle sms/mms like a "normal" text messaging app.
As for "stock" MMS, Hangouts is the new "stock." It is what comes out of the box on Nexus devices now.

8sms and SMS Messaging (AOSP) are just as trustworthy as anything Google or other manufacturers produce
I've tried both and prefer 8sms :good:

So you'd rather take an app, from someone random online, and side load it rather than trust one from the play store?
Hmmm, interesting.
Personally I'd go the other way. But that may just be me.

It doesn't need root to run but it does need to be a System app to work properly. use 8sms

I don't recall asking for an apk. Merely asked if anyone had luck in doing so. I intend to either compile one or pull one from a trusted rom. I wasn't about to install any apk handed to me, but then again that's just me...
It's a moot point anyway
I don't get it??? The phone comes with messaging and hangouts. So use messaging, not hangouts.
How'd this get so complicated? Lol

Also...."don't trust apps" from play store? Just read the comments. Any pitfalls will be talked about in play store comments.
If you have trust issues, android may not be for you. This isn't an insult....just a comment based on your posts....but the iPhone app store is much more strict.....you may have been more suited to it.
Just my 2 cents.

Any reason you refuse to use hangouts? I felt the same way, but after giving it a chance, and their latest update, its all I use, once I got used to it. I prefer the clean ui and stock feel.
CM11 ROM has messaging built into it, so I'm sure it can work, but give hangouts at least a week.
