[Q] Does the Nexus 5 have a Guest login capability? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

We would like to replace our aging Blackberries in our retail stores. But we need to control what the end user can do with the phone like we can with the Blackberries. One way to do that would to use guest login (which, up to now is only available on tablets) on the phone. We could then restrict the movements of the user on the phone.
It's been available on Android for a while now but it's never been turned on for phones. Does the Nexus 5 have this turned on?

bump

No. Multiuser features are limited to tablets

[Q] how to adminstrate ANDROID phones

I am responsible for our companies phones.
Since there are coming more and more ANDROID phones I like your suggestions on how to get control of those phones.
That means full control of what the user is allowed to install and use.
Due to company security reasons we like to keep full control of installed apps.
Is this even possible?

[Q] Will it work as iOS in regard of apps?

Hi,
I would like to change my current phone (ZTE Blade with Android 2.3). I am not to happy with the phone and not to happy with Android either. I got iPad1 but I am not a big fan of iOS as well.
All Windows Phone devices looks cool and prices for decent model are not as high as for iPhone. Unfortunately WP is very unpopular and since none of my friends got one there is no way I can find out few things about it.
Perhaps you will be kind enough to answer my questions?
1. On iOS there is no problem in getting apps from different markets. I live in Poland but with VPN service I got access to NBC, ABC, Hulu, etc. Getting an app is simple - you just switch iTunes account and as long as US or UK app is free I can download it without problem.
Android is a bit more difficult... had to root the phone (with some help) and for stuff like that I need to look in the internet no in Google Play shop.
As far as I know WP requires Live ID and this determines what is available to us. Switching Live ID's = hard reset :-(
So, question is: can I get (and how difficult is it) apps from US and UK markets to my phone?
If answer to Q1 is YES (with some details, please ) - than:
2. Will it work on any WP device or (like wit Android phones) some of them are "no go" in this area?
3. Does WP has a VPN client/support?
4. How features like above will or do influence Windows 8? Both WP & Win8 would be a great tandem but from what I know it looks that MS will try to "lock" both in order to make cash on appstore. Is this correct?
5. One more thing, is it possible to use WP device as GSM router for other devices (like in Android phones)?
Hi,
Some short answers here too
Your phone out of the box with your live id can't download/install apps from other marketplaces. It is possible to sideload apps, but I haven't done it so far, 'cause in Germany and for me I found everything needed. Don't know how the situation in Poland looks like.
WP7 does not support VPN. VPN will come in WP8, as Microsoft said in some dev blogs.
MS won't lock W8 to the new store. But you have to differ between W8 x86 and W8 RT (ARM). W8 RT will - I suppose - have some sort of lock like WP7 (and possibly WP8).
Yes, it's called Internet Connection Sharing, but it is not enabled on all devices. It depends on the device manufacturer. WP7 is able to share the connection, but if the manufacturer don't want the device to do it or maybe they want to save money in the development of the device ( ) you can't to it without some little hacking.
Does any one knows... if I will buy let say Lumia 800 in Poland, will I be able to:
- connect to the VPN service I am using?
- install Netflix (US market only)
- install Hulu + (as above)
- install BBC iPlayer (UK market only)
- usie the phone as mobile router
Where do I look for info. - how to do it?
The only current way to VPN on WP7 is to connect to a network that is already using a VPN (WiFi, such as by Internet Connection Sharing from your PC, or by plugging in the phone to the PC and running the Zune software, which will create an Ethernet-over-USB network for the phone).
I can't say for sure about the Marketplace access. It will depend on your credit card, your Microsoft account, and your VPN (if you use one), and possibly even your mobile operator.
Sharing the phone's Internet connection is a supported WP7 feature, but I'm not sure if the Lumia 800 supports it yet. The feature is called "Internet Sharing" and is in the Settings hub. It's available on all Samsung Windows phones, and I think on all HTCs too. Not sure if it's on the Lumias yet, but Nokia has said they were working on it some time ago. Note that if your carrier blocks or requires payment for this service (sharing the cellular Internet connection), the phone will block the feature until you comply. There are hacks to work around that restriction entirely, but those hacks are only currently possible on Samsung, HTC gen1, LG, Lumia 710, and a few Lumia 800 phones.
Thanks for your answer.
As much as I would love to dump Android - I simply can not :-(.

Feature Of iOS 7's Auto-Updating Apps are Always Great

Recentally Apple has been announced iOS 7 which getting global popular. iOS 7 have one intresting feature "automatically download update"
in backgroun process. iOS offers simple setup that allo your computer or mobile devices automacially update and saving taps & time.
i.e when you connect to your iphone & ipad to your computer in front of your presence but recent update ios 7 any hardware want to connect in landscape orientation.
I got help from Finoit Technologies [www:finoit:com] professional. Now you can details understand of iOS 7 feature if you feel any issue of this feature for mobile app development.

Android phone powered Desktop

Android devices are so powerful today, and the hardware is becoming so powerful that I don't think that the software is utilising that.
We already have much of the technology in devices of today to enable a desktop environment to be streamed from our phones.
Display output: Chromecast (wireless display), MHL (Wired display & charger), etc.
Input methods: Bluetooth Keyboard & mouse, Accelerometer (to emulate mouse input), etc.
UI: Separate Launcher for the desktop UI.
With Microsoft bringing Windows 10 later this year as one OS for both the Phone & Desktop, surely that will allow them to work better in sync with one another, but that will still require a separate desktop computer and phone to create this kind of experience.
But Google now has the chance to simply output a separate UI from the same device that can display a phone UI all at the same time.
If we look at past launches of major Android builds then this coming Google I/O would be the perfect time to announce something like this, since they say that they usually deliver one major build that focuses on UI, and then one that focuses on major feature integration.
And not only would this allow for us to take our desktop with us everywhere in our pocket and connect wirelessly to any compatible display but also it could enable people in poorer economies to buy one device which could give them better access to the internet with a portable display integrated into the device, and also they could connect to the larger displays to browse the web or work on office documents with apps such as 'Google Docs'.
This could really be useful for people who wish to use their device in the work place too.
With Android mobile now offering multiple user profiles on their phones, surely they could create one profile for work, with all of their work apps available in both their phone and desktop UI's, but also a personal profile with all of their media applications & games available when out of work.
The desktop tower may still be useful for a few years to enable support for legacy applications whilst we are waiting for those applications to be ported over to Android/Android Desktop, but that shouldn't take too long considering how quickly we are see'ing apps becoming available to Android offering the kind of services that many of us desire, and if the developers only need to create one application back end for both the Desktop mode & phone mode, then it will be much quicker to bring apps to market with a small bit of time required to make a UI which can be scaled between the phone & desktop mode well.
There are multiple projects trying to create this very experience, but if it was a major part of the Android OS then finally people will get the experience that many people are waiting for, you only have to look at the comments on the developer pages of these projects to see that many people want this kind of experience.
With 64-bit now supported in Android too there is less of a reason to hold back this kind of experience.
I agree totally. Is this the only thread on this subject? Was going to setup Chromecast for video and Bluetooth for keyboard, mouse and audio. Doing this on a Jiayu S3A which is very powerful. Would like one place to discuss what works and what doesn't. Launcher options also need to be discussed.

Difference between Android and iPhone unlocking

Android FRP unlocking allows phone calls and remains unlocked even after repeated reset. On the other hand, unlocked iPhone fails to make calls and remain unlocked after additional factory reset. Google allows muliple accounts in device, while Apple allows single account in device. I have not understood why call fails(scientific technical explanation) and locked agin after iCloud unlocking. Android Frp unlocking is essentially 1. inject internet browser by modem AT(attention) or by some talk-back, bluetooth 2. install frpbypass.apk with account manager, launcher for password setting activity 3. add new Google account with known password. All phone calls are normal, and unlocked state persists even after additional factory reset in Android. Why situations(failed phone call and repeated locking) are so different in case of iPhone technically? Device allows multiple accounts in Android, while only single account in iPhone. Fundamental understading of these different behaviors instead of cookbook "how-to" without scientific explanation will lead us to deeper understanding of differences between Android and iPhone.

IMO the difference between Android and iPhone is: Android is an open-source operating system for mobile devices such as Google Pixel line devices, whereas iPhone is a smartphone created by Apple what runs iOS as operating system.
Most if not even all non-Google smartphones are running a so-called Custom ROM, what varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, means are not running Vanilla Android ( AKA AOSP ) as for example Google devices do, because they layer their own software on top of Vanilla Android.
Also , IIRC, with regards to FRP-unlocking, this also varies from Android version ( API ) to Android version, and from brand ( e.g. Samsung ) to brand.
