[Q] Nexus 5 OTG Support - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

With the huge influx of information today has anyone read anything official on OTG support?
I've got mine on order either way but it would be a nice to have.

I don't see why it won't. The Nexus 7 does.

Well, because the Nexus 4 didn't.

I see your point.

Not really a review but reported to see it in leaked http://m.androidauthority.com/nexus...-android-stock-apps-coming-play-store-279188/ log files.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't this also the case on the N4 and it didn't work anyway?

I don't know if the same spec was posted, but I believe n4 was advertised on Play as having OTG capabilities. Of course, it was quickly discovered that it did not have the voltage to run USB host. By the time I got mine in Feb, that claim had disappeared although we do have the ziddey's "dirty" fix which works with external power source so while not OTG, it can access USB devices. Hope n5 has the juice needed.

Anyone had a chance to properly test this? Total deal breaker for me.

I have 2 OTG devices, and an N5 on order. I'll test stock, then root and test again as soon as it arrives

It appears that OTG isn't enabled by default in the kernel. I went ahead and enabled OTG but my N5 hasn't shipped yet (haven't even received a shipping confirmation yet :crying, so I can't test the kernel I built right now

Post it and i'll try it, got mines the same day it came out LOL!

Still 100% stock and unrooted at the moment but I have a OTG on order should be here monday, I will see if I get time during the week to flash something but I dont touch the programming side of Android so I would still be at the mercy at some other developer providing a flashable zip with it enabled in the kernel.

Could you atleast confirm if it output power, at least mice, keyboard and gamepads should work with stock kernel I think.

My N5 isn't expected until Wednesday but I've asked Chainfire for his comment on this thread as he already has his N5 and also created StickMount.

I tried it out. It doesn't work

Whoops, didn't root it yet. So can't try it out!

OTG works fine on my Nexus 5, used DSLR Controller with it. Wonder if it has the same issue as the new Nexus 7 though and that's why it's not working for some ...
EDIT: Did some further testing, seems the Nexus 5 doesn't suffer from the localisation issues like the new Nexus 7. USB host support is working both in kernel and framework. That being said, it seems there is an issue with StickMount, though

Recommend app for android stick.

I recently got the mk908ii, so far it's been working out great. Very fast. Wi-Fi is very strong, but the antenna seems kind of fragile(accidentally turned it wrong way and heard a crack). Does anyone have recommendations for any new apps I can use?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4
I have had a mk808b for about a week now, these are my must have apps:
-full!screen: for hiding the navigation bar that was there even on "fullscreen" movie playback. I set a pie control for my right upper display corner that now totally replaces the navigation bar. This is actually the most usefull app i found.
-External Keyboard Helper: for starting apps directly with the push of a button on my wireless keyboard (Measy RC12)
-Screen Adjuster: In case you don't want to change the brightness/color settings of your tv
-XBMC (v 13 gotham alpha 1 works quite well for me, if you can live without hardware decoding, the stable v 12.2 (frodo) build would propably be better) + Plugins (1channel, icefilms etc...)
-MX Player: probably better playback of HD content than XBMC

What build are you using? I tried so many different ones. The first 6 alphas with hwaccel and 2 nightlys from last week, but alpha 1 was the only one where youtube worked. All others showed a network connection error. I just finished downloading the alpha 7 from yesterday. I am going to test it now...

Don't use any of the specific alpha builds, because now ALL nightlies have libsf! I would first try the latest nightly and go from there!
I find that ALL of the XAF builds fail on my MK908. So I gave up on that thread.
Hmm, my MK908 isn't actually plugged in right now and I have to go do some work. But just try the LATEST android nightly build and if that doesn't work ask again and I'll hook up and tell you which build I'm actually using.

OK, I just hooked up my MK908... still waiting for my tronsmart airmouse from geekbuying so I haven't been messing with it recently
WTF, why isn't full!screen working? XBMC isn't starting fullscreen for no apparent reason. And I am getting errors I've never seen before from XBMC about "Failed to start commoncache"
Looks like my MK908 has developed some kind of problem while I wasn't using it. That's a real mark of quality hardware.
I don't think I will ever buy another android stick PC at this rate. So far I have tried two rikos and one tronsmart and they are all crap. It's too bad nobody mades any Android PC which is not crap. I guess there's some that are kind of OK but they are more expensive than an AMD nettop! WTF. This is why my MK908 wasn't even plugged in. I sure hope Pi****u supports this chip soon.
edit: that's PIC UNT U. Word filters are for children.
Well, I'm not going to be able to give you any useful information, you probably already know that Google is unresponsive to bugs and that XBMC doesn't run very well on Android. I guess I will have to re-flash my MK908. Maybe I'll try just restoring a backup.
What garbage.

That's exactly the porblem i have with all XBMC builds after Alpha 1 (besides the non-functional youtube addon, but i guess thats related because youtube needs the commoncache plugin). But all other plugins work fine, so its not that bad .
If you decide to reflash let me know if it resolves the issue for you.

LG has resolved the power issue, so it should. Recall that the N4 was released as USB OTG, but had to be backtracked when it was discovered there was no power. Fortunately,,cable and kernel tweaks by devs worked around the issue.

YAAAAY!!!
Looks like it should from the various log file leaks etc. My main reservation will be the ability to get ethernet working OTG like with the N7. Got this working with my Note2 after building the kernel modules myself - hopefully the N5 will be precompiled, or easy to create too.
Most Android phones at the moment support it so it would be weird if the N5 didn't support it

maybe for making it cheap xD
If the service manual that was leaked is accurate, the hardware will support USB OTG. There are a bunch of references in the manual (the Qualcomm power management IC has a VOUT_5VS_OTG output, a block diagram for the charging/USB area shows +5V0_OTG_OVP (over voltage protection), and there is a OTG enable line listed (OTG_EN)).
I didn't realize the N4 didn't support OTG (without a bit of a work around) until I came across this thread and did some reading about it.

That is a nifty device. I was going to sell my 64GB uSD card with my Note2 after I get the Nexus 5, but maybe I will hang on to it and get one those uSD adapters. It would be much easier to carry that uSD adapter with a 64GB card inside instead of an OTG cable and a thumb drive.
Matt
If the N5 is even loosely based on the LG G2 it will have USB OTG host. My G2 natively mounts mass storage devices via USB OTG.
Does any one have a link to a mirror of the N5 service manual?

[Q] Swap LG G2 camera module into Nexus 5?

Hi guys since the N5 and G2 are closely related I was thinking it might be possible to put the 13mpx camera module from the G2 into the N5. I did some searching for images and from what I can see the connector looks to be the same or at least very similar:
Nexus 5 camera module:
http://www.etradesupply.com/lg-nexus-5-d820-rear-facing-camera.html
LG G2 camera module:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Camara-Prin...3?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_186&hash=item2330e302e7
Even if this fits there might be software related issues that might stop it from working (Drivers etc)
What do you guys think? worth a try? Or anyone tried it?
I think its pointless. Its not all about mega pixels you know?

probly wont work and would need a entire software rewrite if the phone even could detect it I think there would be serious software problems
I wouldn't bother

IMO, it's definitely can! The module is same!
Might be worth the hassle. You could always pop the original camera back in if it didn't work and sell the G2 camera.

If it weren't around the holidays, I would probably at least try. My wallet is near empty. If it does fail, you can always just swap the N5 camera back in. Let us know if your going to move forward with the modding, I'd like to see that!
subscribed! I would honestly be more interested in having a camera app with the same iq and speed of the G2 Camera
bump, would like to know if that is possible too! I think we would need to modify a kernel and have a new camera app/drivers, but if hardware supports it, why not! Any testers? :fingers-crossed:
EDIT: Cheaper module: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Replacement...e_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item4d1cd1ac7a
EDIT2: an even cheaperer module http://www.ebay.com/itm/Replacement...e_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item2c80ba1e8b

Firstly I am a realist and that is because of my second point, which is that it can't be done. Try and prove me wrong if you like but I accept no responsibility for your device
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Why can't it be done? I think with some kernel and android tweaking we could get that working, am I wrong? I've checked, they are the same connectors. I see only two problems that might stop from using G2's camera - no hardware support (which I think should be there as they are almost the same phones), or no one smart/determined enough to get it working on software. If I get it working somehow on hardware level and prove it to you (I don't even imagine how, but what if), would you help me with making it run properly? I am not saying that this is really possible, I am saying that no one knows that for sure (maybe exept LG).
Then buy it, do it and get it over with. Btw, it wont work.
We can make it shoot videos in 8k 120fps too :silly:
Seriously though, if it was possible, it would have been done already.

[Q] Nexus 5, screen broken, need to access data, help?

Hi,
I broke the screen on my Nexus 5 while on a long holiday. I can still see about three quarters of the screen but the touch screen is basically busted, and as a result, I can't unlock the phone to get the data off. I backed up 90% of the photos via Dropbox but there is one week of photos I couldn't upload and there are also some really nice videos I'd like to get off.
Is there any way to sync to the file system without unlocking via the touchscreen? I don't think I have debugging disabled (I'm not particularly development savvy) so not sure what my options are...
I have a little time before I need to send the phone to LG for repair, so I'm willing to learn whatever I need to to salvage my phone. I think I saw a thread somewhere detailing how it's down for the nexus 4 but not sure if it's applicable to the 5 as well...
Thanks

Help bypass reset setup

I bought this phone and was wondering if I could get any help bypassing the factory reset gmail set up. I know we can't root these damn phones but does anyone know of anything else I could do? No, I don't have access to the old email and I don't know what it is.
Need an otg cable and a USB flashdrive with an app that opens settings. The app I can provide you and i can walk you through it but the cable you need. Only way we have been able to bypass customers phones that had to be reset

It's an app I made that just opens settings when you install it. That way when you install the apk you are able to hit open to go to settings and rest from there to fix the activation lock

So the app I will try to post. The idea is that currently when a USB is plugged up to a Samsung with otg Samsung phones open a file browser for the USB. Having my app on the USB allows you to install and click open taking you to the menu to reset the phone normally. So put the app on the USB and install it when the file browser pops up. It's a simple app made with Tasker. So far it has been tested on a few note 5s and a s6 edge.

I seen something similar with an apk posted by root junkie. The only thing is that when I plug in the ogt driver, file manager doesn't open.
Any idea what I could in this case? I really wish we could just root these phones so I can just flash another OS. Would be so much easier.

So do i just plug my otg driver to that cable or do i hook it up to a computer?
Supposed to plug the USB drive into the cable then the cable into the phone. But that drive you have is a little different

It's a dual driver. Has a port for computers and androids so I guess it'll work fine. Thank you for your help.
