Hello.
I am going to sell my phone and I was wondering if a factory reset is enough? It's just since I've had so much personal data on my device I want to make sure that it can't be restored later or something like that.
Thank you in advance!
You could always sell your phone it just depends, the only thing you need to is a Factory reset but if it's rooted or have a custom ROM you need to unroot it and flash back the stock rom.

That isn't entirely accurate. Some people (like we few) would pay more for a phone with an unlocked boot loader or custom rom. Even root ups the resale value.

Yes, that's most certainly enough. Although there ARE pieces of software out there that could recover your data, 99.999% of the folks getting your phone just want to use the phone. You could do a complete NAND wipe, but it takes a bit of time and some know-how. All of us simply do a factory reset and move on! Best of luck to you!

hi I rooted my phone yesterday I want to do a nandroid so i can revert to original state if i ever have to return it back to samsung, I seen guides online but didnt want to try them incase something is diferent
It's really quite simple. Open rom manager, scroll down, click backup current rom. Don't touch anything till it reboots.
Oh and restoring a backup of your rooted rom won't revert your phone to being unrooted. If you are going to send it in you may need to unroot and lock your bootloader. I've never sent a phone in so I'm not a 100% though.
Yeah i heard about needing to lockboatloader etc i might just use my free phone insurance from my bank and claim a lost phone. Is this the same for kernals i think i had read something as i want cyanogen mod and kernal so i can get voodoo

Hi
I just bought a new HTC. Do u know if there is a pc / laptop application from which i can take a complete "As-is" image of the phone?
I want this just in case if i mess up playing with the mobile, i can use the PC application and restore the complete image as i bought using USB connecting to
phone.
Thanks
If you mean after you've set it up(apps and personal config) on the stock rom, no there isn't a way.
Thanks
Is there way to get the original ROM / Image? let us i do not want the apps and personal config thru PC application connecting thru USB?

If you look in bubbys simple one click thread or the hack kit thread, there are links to the stock RUU. You can run the RUU from your PC through USB to phone or through hboot.

I'll add to the above by saying, once you're rooted, it's a different story.
At that point you can flash clockwork recovery, which will allow you to back-up your phones state at that time, which is what you're asking to do now.
The difference is there's no way of doing it to the phone out of the box... As at the point it's not rooted, and the mechanism of backing up in the manner to which you refer is only available with a custom recovery, which is only available on rooted phones with s-Off.
It's a shame, as I wouldn't have minded doing the same thing back before I rooted, but... No go.
A hard reset will restore your phone as you bought it. If you want to save apps and data, there are apps for backing up. You would just do restores after the hard reset.

No. The response was to a user with a stock phone already (non-rooted). If you're running a different ROM, then you're necessarily rooted and will have a tough time getting back to out-of-box condition.

You did not state in your original post that you are planning to root. Obviously, your concern is returning the phone for warranty purposes. I have read many post where users flashed a stock rom and used the s-on tool. It may not return you to exactly like out of the box, but it would be close enough to get you thru warranty. The stock rooted rom I am using now is exactly like stock before I rooted. If it weren't for the fact that someone tinkered with the kernel name, there would be know way to tell the difference.

I do not want root or do anything with the phone now. I just want to take a AS-IS out of box image of the phone using a PC application and store it. And then play with all phone.
Looks like from the mail threads, it is not possible. AM i correct?
I am waiting to see a response or a way and then even configure or play with my HTC inspire.

It's a 3-way chicken/egg thing. You can't do what you want without unfettered access to the main partitions on the phone. You can't get unfettered access without rooting. You can't root without installing a downgraded ROM and losing the current ROM.

If you're not going to root there is no need to "store" the factory image as it is part of your rom. When you want to reset it just do a factory data reset and it will be just like it was when it came out of the box.

You seem a bit confused. If you are not going to root, then my original reply would apply, a hard reset will get you back to out of the box. However, if you do not root, you will not be able to flash a custom rom.

I am helping a buddy with his Infuse 4G, and his USB port is broken. He has a stock rom on it, but it's still rooted. He needs to replace it for a CLNR replacement phone but we gotta unroot first. How can this be done without ODIN? In the stock recovery it has a flash package option, can it be done that way? If so where can I find the file? The only problem is that SuperUser won't go away lol
Are u going thru att to get the phone replaced if so i sent mine back with root still on it with no problems so to speak but see this thread for further info and see if its something that will help u out at least deleting the system files. Just an idea
I figured it won't be too big of a deal as long as it looks stock with no special boot animations or something, I had a friend return a phone to T mobile that had root but nothing otherwise, stock recovery, etc. But my friend is quite worried because it can be an insane .
won't doing a factory reset from settings > privacy unroot it? it wipes your SD card, so this should be all that you have to do...

Nvflash is not possible on jb right now.
If you don't want to unlock and flash a custom rom you could disable the bloatware apps to get rid of them.

There are apps out on the play store to remove bloatware. (Root Required) Give NoBloat or Root App Deleter a try
I unlocked it once before.. installed cleanrom. Wanted to install updated cleanrom. When i went to factory reset it or whatever and did the press up to continue. Thats when it bricked the first time. Was it from me doing something wrong there that caused it to brick?? I guess if i know that there is something I need to do that i didn't do than I will make sure to do it right. I didn't think doing a factory reset just to install a different rom was going to brick the unit . So now $150 later and back with locked tablet really just don't want the bloatware which is why i liked cleanrom.
dont mess around with it
My advice is not to try anything risky on it.
This device is such a bad one that it bricks by itself (happened to me)
and it is impossible to unbrick,
so my advice is not to mess around with it if you dont want to pay again.

Don't use WIPE DATA on the bootloader menu; I think that is what you described. It is a perfect brick maker!
The new Hydro 5 has most bloat removed. It is smooth and easy; not fast. I don't do games so I can't speak to that.
Take your time, there's no hurry. To remove bloat you will need to root or flash a custom rom, on JB that means unlock!
Once you have some ideas from this post read the related threads and make your decisions. Till then that bloat will wait!
Good Luck!
wipe data was what I did before. How do I have all the data go away if i want to reinstall a different rom? I'm familiar with rooting and what not. As I said I had unlocked the tablet before. I didn't know wiping data would make it brick though . I also had an Epic 4g that I had rooted and customed etc..

Hey Tobdaryl,
Is there any reason why using WIPE DATA from the bootloader menu bricks it? Apparently my NVFlash adventures have lead me to discover that my bootloader is iffy, and I want to do a COMPLETE 100% total wipe of my tablet, and then just flash stock JB on it and be done.
Any advice sir?

I'm sorry I don't know the reason WIPE DATA(bootloader) bricks, just that it does. This comes from information provided by those that are unable to recover from what should be a soft brick. Several others are telling the same as I in an attempt to stop some of the bricks.
You can safely use Twrp to wipe Cache, Dalvik Cache, Factory Reset, System, and then flash the factory update of choice. You should be clean at that point.
One warning ensure you have your file to flash on your sdcard (not internal) before you do this and you can access it from Twrp. You do not want to wipe those and reboot without flashing some replacement.

Yea I can use CWM to perform all those tasks as well. As long as that is a complete wipe, then I will be happy.
It's OK, in my experience, if you wipe and accidentally delete your file on the internal SD card. Just flash it via Fastboot, no big deal
I will work on this at work today after I get these programming assignments taken care of. Thanks for the advice!!!
Your tablet can be unbrickable, but you have to sign the special petition (look at my signature). If you helped sharing petition, It would get succes. There's not another way.

What I just did (and keep in mind I have no idea if it will be of any help to you) is I reverted my recovery to the stock image, and forced a hard factory reset. Originally I was having issues with data connectivity and speeds, and so far (after doing all the above) it seems to have worked. My last resort, assuming the above was unsuccessful, was to go to a local Verizon Retailer and buy a new SIM (though I have two on hand at the moment, so that would be a last last LAST resort).
Alternatively, what ROM are you currently on? I know that when I flashed a GPE ROM and began fiddling with the phone's network settings, I lost all data connectivity. Perhaps try what @spy4ka suggested in a thread I opened a while back?

As I understand, you have the Google edition. I had the same problem. It is an easy fix:
1 go to phone app and dial *#*#4636#*#*
2 click on phone information
3 under preferred network type select LTE/GSM/CDMA auto
4 wait for signal bars to show up and you're done.
Hope it helped.

Finally, you could attempt to restore from someone else's Nandroid/backup, if all the above fails. Here is a thread with links to a Nandroid created by @krazie1, though you will have to ask his permission to gain access to them.

Hey, I could help you. There are 2 main reasons you don't get data: 1 it is a software problem( which is fixable) and 2 it is a hardware problem( which is not).
First you would change these in your phone: ROM, kernel and modem( I don't think they do modems now ). We will focus on ROM and kernels.
The very first thing that you should do in backup your data. Trust me it will help a lot ( I have some really nasty stories about how I flashed the wrong thing and I soft bricked my phone).
Next you should install a stock ROM. ACR is good and lightweight ( plus it flashes a kernel for you, so yay). You can find it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2716597
Now flash this thing.
If you still are not getting your data try flashing the stock kernel. You could find to here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2712793
If none of these work, you have a hardware problem and return it.
Hope it helps.

I would first follow @spy4ka's recommendations, especially flashing the stock Sense 6 ROM's kernel. If that still doesn't help, I actually would suggest getting a new SIM card instead of a full factory reset... for now. Since you have access to 3G data, you have at least solved part of your data connection problem, and to me seems like it may just now be a faulty SIM (such as failing to activate/is now a complete dud). After all that, if you still have issues with data, I can coach you through reverting your recovery back to the stock image and performing a factory reset (you will lose all data on your internal memory, along with root, which is why this shouldn't be done unless all the above fails). If that still doesn't work, then your final option would be as @spy4ka suggested, returning you current device and getting a replacement. If you are still within Verizon's 14 day trial period, then this will be a free replacement. Otherwise, it will have to be through your phone's insurance, and will likely cost $99.
