Take a look here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831152
Use the second metod in the above thread - http://rootgalaxynote.com/galaxy-no...-galaxy-note-10-1-easiest-methodcwmmethod-2/#
Also make sure that you uncheck auto-reboot in odin if you are using the latest firmware, or you will lose CMW on reboot.
Ps: I recommend using TWRP after rooting using the above method. You can simply install TWRP using GooManager from the Play Store - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.s0up.goomanager

No, used in my friend note 10.1 not even a week ago, with the latest firmware, and it work flawlessly
But in newer version you need to uncheck auto-reboot! And manually reboot to recovery.

The last time I ask about same thing. Some smartass tell me to Google it. But I will tell u to search at Ganish thread about the cfroot for all the firmware version. Read through it and find something about root.zip.
But careful read all the instructions and understand it or you get soft brick.

If you are still using stock Rom, try to temporarily unroot your device and try again. If it doesn't work try unchecking USB debugging. If it still doesn't work, you'll really have to fully unroot your device to play it

Not if the app is set to detect root. Then you will have to unroot every time you want to play. More and more apps are using this method.

Try updating through OTA on the phone. If it says there are no updates available wait a few more days. Your country will probably get the MDM/MDN/MD2 update sooner or later. If you don't want to wait you can find a number of threads in this forum that teaches you how to flash new ROMs through a program called Odin.

You can find ROMs to download here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2252855
As for Odin tutorial you can search on Google. You will easily find it. Odin works the same way since the very first Galaxy so there is no way to screw it up.

Is it a SGH-i8160 ?
Hi yes it is I am trying to help my brother flash a custom rom on it with the little knowledge I have.
Do you know if the network will still work OK? And would you know why when he's downloading a rom using goo manager it downloads then just hangs on the md5 check. He's got stock 4.1.2 rooted.
Thanks

Which rom do you want to install?
If it's rooted already it should be fine. Try to look for the radio files for your device online.
