[Q] Android Update Coming... how to stop? - Droid Ultra Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got an email from Motorola offering me to test out the new version of Android for the Ultra, Maxx, and Mini.
That means such will be pushed to the general users within a few days or possibly a week.
From my past experience with such updates, the #1 change is to close any loopholes being used to root the devices. Therefore, I have very little interest in ever updating the O/S now that I do have root.
Is there a way I can stop my phone from checking, and installing, such updates? Such would including blocking the nag popups.

hmm...soak test for camera update possibly? I haven't gotten anything yet for mine...hopefully someone can make this flashable for SS and we'll be fine..

On the maxx hd there was an app that you freeze that made it not download updates.
Sent from my XT1080m using xda-developers app.

This thread talks about how to do it for the Moto X (which is basically the same thing, right?).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2466191
I read through the instructions, and everything seems straight forward until it gets to the part about flashing stock recovery and such.
Will this method work for the MAXX? If so, where do we find the .img files we would need?

It use to be to "freeze" BlurUpdater_VZW.apk and Upgrader.apk. But I don't see those apps, nor any app with a similar name, in /systems/apps.

So if all I needed root for was for the entitlement hack (and I've heard that survives the new OTA) could I just accept this OTA knowing that I will lose root? Or will it not install?

Your right in system/app I do not see an updater.apk, but in Titanium backup I do see one to freeze? That should work to stop updates, it did in the past.

All I've done was pwnmymoto for root, the entitlement hack, and disable a bunch of apps. can I accept the OTA?

yes..but root most likely won't survive..youll have to rsd back to stock...download pwnmymoto. install it but don't run it... accept the ota and then the phone will reboot and it should be rooted...should be LOL

Freezing updater . apk doesn't stop the prompts to update.

I did this and it stopped the download (I'm rooted and down have time today with messing around with unbricking a bootlooping phone).
I'm glad I happened to look at my phone on my way home from work because it appears that this update just inflicts itself on the phone without any real chance to decline it (at 2am when most people are sleeping).

My Maxx installed the update this morning and has been stuck in a constant reboot cycle ever since. It will boot long enough for me to go in and check on the update (which states that the "Install is deferred") then simply reboots again and again. There is also a code 252 on the software install screen.
Can anyone help me get out of the reboot cycle? My phone is rooted with the entitlement check set to 0, other than that completely stock.

You were probably rooted and thus lost your recovery from pwnmymoto. You need to fxz back to stock.

Flash a custom recovery/ROM. That should do it
But I'm not sure what else if the fwupgrade freeze didn't work
Yes. How do I stop this crap!?
I have 2 of these both rooted and hers keeps trying to install it. Its already downloaded on hers. I interrupted mine by killing the internet connection as soon as I saw it start downloading.
I'm sure when I'm sleeping it will try to install itself. So ill just shut my phone off.
Grr...
I'm running nosymathy rom with CWM installed and unlocked bootloader. The verizon update downloaded and prompted to install which I deferred for an hour. Not sure if the update will simply fail because I froze fwupgrade or not but I don't want to take the chance and I want to stop OTA completely so it doesn't even check.

Thats an issue with no-sympathy.... Most ROM's block the OTAs so you don't even need to worry about them.
This is actually the first ROM i've heard of that allows OTA's to even show up on the prompts.
Cmon no one knows how to prevent OTA prompts? How is it done in other ROMs?

You would have to ask the ROM's developers. Refuse it, and flash to another ROM that does it automatically for you. Obviously No Sympathy didn't think of an OTA... whynot I dunno. But every other developer did.

Just flash a custom recovery - ota updates can't install through a custom recovery so the furthest it gets onto your phone is in the /cache directory limbo.

Ditto here too, spent half the day trying to figure this out. I noticed some DNS errors coming from the phone while doing the update. Maybe they have figured out a way to block the 0.7.2. update for just us? Anyone know of a way to load just the 6 meg update to the phone manually and force the update?
Some behaviors I've noticed:
1. erase data 4G only get error mentioned above: "Please try again later"
2. turn on wifi (and 4G off) get no message but no update.
3. turn off wifi and "download suspended" appears (and never changes)
4. reboot to 4G only, get "An unexpected error has occured. Please try again later."
Stuck.
UPDATE:
My router shows a request to ws-cloud434-blur.svcmot.com from my phone. If I change my DNS to OpenDNS (hijackers) and try to update I see references to the "website not found" garbage that OpenDNS injects. Unfortunately I dismantled my squid setup so I can't see the exact url that is being attempted only the DNS error when OpenDNS injects it. I'm tempted to bring squid up just so I can figure out what is actually being requested on the update server.
Yea I can update to the latest via the computer, but then I cannot restore root so guess I will be waiting. I piicked a great time to do this ha ha.

How did you "via the computer"?
BTW, I did throw squid back in the full urls:
h t t p://ws-cloud434-blur.svcmot.com/blur-services-1.0/ws/upgrade/2/check_for_upgrade/(hex/dec numbers)
h t t p://ws-cloud434-blur.svcmot.com/blur-services-1.0/ws/upgrade/1/report_upgrade_status/(hex/dec numbers)
Both are POSTS and both return "file not found" when I try them from the browser.
Using the Motorola Device Manager. There is an option to update device. But it goes straight from the original ICS to Latest JB. Was not able to get root back afterwards. Voodoo did not even give the option. Tried the RestoreRoot script as well without success.

That's a great try, shame it doesn't let you just install the 0.7.2 update. Did you set Voodoo to temp un-root during the update?

Yes. Temp Unroot then flashed with Device Manager. Went to Voodoo and SuperUser had to be reinstalled. Did that, still did not give me an option to re-root.

But... I think it did. I just updated two devices using the Device Update tool. This is from memory but...
1) Connect, right click your taskbar and click check for updates.
2) It will say there is a 6MB download available to go to 0.7.2, accept it.
3) Updater downloads it, reboots your phone, applies it, etc.
4) Once fully booted, it prompts again, there's a new update available.
[do your rooting here]
5) Accept this update. It will download now a much larger file (200+ MB if i recall) to get you to the latest version
6) It reboots, applies the update, reboots, etc.
Unfortunately, I was too eager to get on the latest and greatest ROM before dropping by, so I did it from a vanilla new-phone upgrade. I did not root the device.

Droid maxx update failure?

So I took the Droid Maxx update, while I had PwnMyMoto installed. After the reboot I got a message that read "system update failed". However if I go into settings>about phone and check my version of the software, it's the same as the update.
Also there was a Google Play update for the camera app that was not available to me before the software update. Can anyone provide any insight into what might be going on?

What's the word on having root after the November update? Broken? Have to reinstall Pwn?
fat-fingered and Maxx-ed out.
Luckily I happened to glance down at my phone and see that it was downloading (I was driving home from work). I threw it into airplane mode, got home, and after some poking around on here, froze Updater and MotorolaOTA which stopped it (still shows "downloading" within the System Updates menu).
Now to wait a few days to see if there's an easy method to take the OTA, keep root while not somehow causing the death of small children or worse, me having to flash this thing completely and lose all my settings, etc.

Your wait is over.
HouseofMoto will allow you to flash FXZ, keep settings and data and if you DL pwnmymoto BEFORE you accept the OTA, you can install it after the OTA. I haven't done the pwnmymoto trick but I hear it works and is easier than the rockmymoto process.

Reboot Cycle
Yeah, I ran into the same issue as I was rooted and accepted the OTA update which caused the reboot cycle. I didn't have Titanium Backup (like an idiot) but, through a number of reset cycles, I was able to download and install it in the 20 or so seconds I had before restart. I finally got back in and was able to disable/delete the OTA apk.

[Q] rooted droid maxx boot loops after ota attempt

You are bootlooping because the root method used on this phone removes the stock recovery, thus the phone keeps trying, and failing, to install the update. As far as I'm aware the only way you can get out of the bootloop is to boot into fastboot and re-flash stock 12.15.15 (luckily because the 4.4 update has not installed on your device you will be able to keep your lower firmware, and thus re-root). However I am not 100% sure this is the only solution, and this would wipe your phone as well. I recommend waiting for more responses or looking around for a possible other solution if you prefer to try to not wipe your phone....

I haven't had time to look around and find the thread, but I was able to find a thread that allowed me to FXZ using fastboot to restore 12.15.15 and restore everything, leaving your data intact. Worked like a charm when I was stuck in the bootloop. So, it's doable.

Don't take 4.4 OTA as there is no way to root it. You need to start the process on rooted 4.2.2 using the slapmymoto process nicely outlined here.

I'm rooted with TWRP and I received a notification that the update was downloaded and ready to install. I'm going to update it manually using the LG Mobile Support Tool just to make sure I don't brick my phone.

can you let me know if you 1) lose root and 2) lose recovery please?
I just got prompted for the update, but I do not want to download it yet.

In my experience, updating via LG Support Tool wipes everything. I am backing up all my data right now. Hopefully towelroot still works on this version.
EDIT: So I just finished the update via LG Support Tool. My data was left intact, but stuff was broke anyways - probably from using system cleaner app and then not having root after the update. So I am doing a factory reset anyway and will start all over. I expected it to be wiped anyway.

I ended up using the LG Mobile Support Tool to install the update. I wasn't able to install the OTA; it booted into TWRP, then when I rebooted the system, it said I was up to date, even though I was still on 10a. I lost root, but was able to re-root with towelroot. Everything was still there when I booted, although I don't have TWRP recovery. Not sure if I want to do that since I read somewhere that I will lose Knock Code. Make sure you back up your data just in case things don't go smoothly.

See if re-rooting with towelroot will fix anything that's broken before you do a complete wipe.

Oh nice. No downgrade to root process again.
and I do like the knock code functionality. :cyclops:
Hey guys how would you go about doing a fresh install with this or can we not unless we have the full kdz file?
Some cool new stuff. Seems a little boggy... Lookout was killing me so I went to disable it and was greeted by a app management screen. nice

If I use KDZ to flash the update, will I loose TWRP? Or do you think a flashable zip file will be made in the future?
I just updated my NON ROOTED d801 g2 and now my touch screen does not work at all. No errors during installation.
I ran into this problem before when I tried to update the touchscreen firmware through the menus via
3845#801#
My screen would go unresponsive, but after 10 mins and a couple of reboots, it would work back (my guess is that it reverted to the old touch firmware).
This time though, the touchscreen seems to be permanently disabled. Anyone else running into this issue?

Yes, but I believe the new route that's it still works.

Yes you will lose TWRP, if you're concerned about that, hold out for the flashable zip, which I'm sure is coming in the next few days.
