[Q] Update Kernel to 3.4 - HTC One S

Hi, I wanna flash this rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2425839) and it says I need HBOOT 2.15 (which I have) in order to update the kernel to 3.4. After I do that, will I be able to downgrade to my old kernel? or is it as simple as just reinstalling my old rom which had an older kernel?
Thanks!

You have 2.15 hboot so you are ok to install that rom.
I assume you are S-on so whenever you install a rom through your custom recovery just the Rom is installed. The kernel hasn't been changed, you need to fastboot flash the boot.img to install the kernel.
To find the boot.img you will need to open the Rom.zip on your pc and copy the boot.img to your fastboot folder. You will need to do that whenever you try a new Rom, or want to try a different kernel from the development section.

If you have HBOOT 1.14, boot.img's will have to be flashed separately via fastboot. Extract the boot.img from you ROM zip and put it in the same directory as fastboot.
Reboot your device into boot loader and run "'fastboot flash boot boot.img' (no quotes) into command prompt.
Here is an automated proccess:
[TOOL] HTC Auto Boot.img Installer (One Click Tool)
Ther is also an app from the play store that does the same thing without using a PC:
[APP] Flash Image GUI
Video Instructions:
Install a Rom With Flash GUI on the HTC One XL Hboot 1.14
But for right now you need to use the [TOOL] HTC Auto Boot.img Installer (One Click Tool) .
First boot to boot loader and enable fastboot, then extract the boot.img from the rom and put it in the same folder as the tools downloaded from the link. Run the RunME_From_FastBoot tool.
Reboot the phone and you should be good to go.
Or you can download cleanrom 5.1 or viperxl and flash it Normal through recovery now those 2 ROMs do not require you to flash boot.img seperately. They're good to keep on sdcard as a safety net

You flashed a rom for a different phone. You won't be able to start this up.
It sounds like you should be able get into recovery or at least bootloader. If so, you need to flash a correct rom for the One XL, and flash the boot.img in fastboot before anything will work.
In the future, stay away from roms outside the One XL forum. Some of them are capable of hard-bricking your phone.

Help flashing roms

So I need some help. I'm not new to android or adb or anything, just confused with this. Here's some background info:
HTC One S (Cincinnati Bell)
S4 Variant
Unlocked boot loader
Rooted (on stock ROM)
TWRP installed
Hboot 1.14
SuperCID
Problem: tried installing the latest CM10 and also CM10.1 with no success(endless boot animation, and 10.1 gets stuck on the HTC screen). I read I news to flash a boot.IMG to get it to work since I'm not S-off. Where can I find this boot.IMG that needs to be flashed?
Any help is much appreciated! Couldn't find anything from my searches.

If you are able to access TWRP recovery, you should be able to mount your SD card and transfer a new rom onto your phone via your computer(download it onto your computer and transfer it using your USB cable), or if you made a nandroid backup from a point in time when your phone was working, that should do the trick. If you really want to flash a custom boot.img, I recommend using this to flash it.
He already had the ROM installed, he just needs to fastboot the boot.img to get it to boot.

Yeah, before I went to bed I figured it was was in the ROM. Thank you! I'll have another go at it.
Why is it that the boot.IMG doesn't get flashed properly? Is anyone working on a fix?
Edit: worked perfectly! Thanks guys!
Its because of your hboot. hboot 1.14 and higher dont flash it properly.
Fix for it? Downgrade to a lower hboot, or flash the boot.img from the phone before flashing a new rom with flash image gui, or just live with it.
S-OFF might also remove the need for seperate flash of the boot.img, I havnt bothered looking into it so I dunno...
Right now I'm on CM10, and let's say I want to switch to the 10.1 nightly's. I shouldn't have to flash the boot.IMG for each new nightly since its the same ROM, correct?

It depends on which rom you stay with. If you stay on CM10, then you do not have to flash the boot.img everytime you flash a new nightly. But if you go to 10.1, then you will have to flash that boot.img first. If you have S-Off the boot.img will be flashed from TWRP when the rom is flashed, and you wont have to do it from Fastboot. I don't suggest you try to downgrade you Hboot, especially because we have S-Off now. Although some people are finding that they can no longer connect to any signal above Edge/2g after S-Off.
That's why I didn't want to go s-off just yet. I saw some people having trouble with it, and since I've got a different model (Cincinnati Bell version) than the s-off guide has, I decided not to until it was 100% stable. Thanks for the help though guys! As long as I've got to a way to flash roms without too much headache, I'm happy.

ViperSAGA 2.1.1 Wifi not working

Hi, I flashed rom, but wifi is not working.
If someone could assist me with hboot and radio?
With other roms I had no trouble with anything, so some assist with hboot and radio would be needed to get this rom working.

I don't think this can have anything to do with radio or hboot. I assume you flashed the boot.img after flashing the Rom and after every kernel installation (the boot.img from the kernel you flashed)?

You are htcdev unlocked, still s-on. This means you can't write to the /boot partition from recovery, only through fastboot. So after flashing a new Rom or kernel, you have to extract the boot.img and flash it manually in cmd.

You should flash a custom one.
Or just restore from a backup you should have done with the stock rom
where i can find a backup?not any download link?
if you have a backup you can choose it when you are in your recovery and go to restore
anyway i would also recommend to flash a custom rom.... flash the kernel via fastboot and then the rom using recovery...
Ok, buddy, just stop where you are. All you need to do is flash the correct kernel for your phone.
Also, you cannot flash stock roms (ruu) or ota's from a custom recovery.

In order to flash ViperS 311 on HTC Sensation you have to flash kernel
311 which is included in the downloads section for vipers 311 (link
provided above).
Unfortunately, this "kernel updater" is making changes which are
preventing some programs to work. I want to remove ViperS and flash
other rom,
Unfortunately x2 this kernel updater made changes which are preventing
flashing other roms. In fact - I am struggling to boot 4ext
Therefore I want it out and revert to the software which I had on my

actually you didn't flash kernel updater
kernel updater is being using to flash the boot.img of the rom so you can boot the rom after installation(if you are facing bootloops)
what to do now
flash another rom as you know
after that put the boot.img of the rom in your adb and fastboot folder and flash it via fastboot command(i assume you know how to do that)
if you need anything else report

Well, now I'm totally confused so let's start from the beginning:
1. I had some customised rom and decided to flash ViperS 3.1.1.
Flashing 3.1.1. is impossible unless you use this "kernel flasher" which
is included in downloads on the official ViperS311 thread. After
running this kernel flasher I managed to install ViperS311 but for
example LBE Privacy isn't working, my SatNav program isn't wokring,
other software isn't working as well.
2. Yesterday I got a message on my phone that there is an update from
ViperS 3.1.1 to ViperS 3.1.2 which I installed. Unfortunately, after
updating to 3.1.2 the wifi isn't working. I want to remove ViperS and
revert to other Rom like Asianic or any other. Now this is impossible
because of the changes that kernel flasher from ViperS made to my
device.
3. I want it out and get my phone back as I need it.
4. I have just flashed stock kernel and managed to install Asianic, but
after booting into the system and installing ES File Manager, it went
into a boot loop. Is starts and reboots non-stop.
5. I did used ADB but really long time ago so I don't remember all. I
also use mainly linux so I will prefer to revert it to the previous
version without the need for Windows use.

can you boot now in the asianic rom?
if not then follow these steps
1)boot the device to the bootloader
2)connect it to pc via usb(in the hboot screen must say fastboot usb)
3)now extract the boot.img from the asianic rom and place it in the folder where you have adb and fastboot files
4)open in that folder a cmd window and do fastboot flash boot boot.img
5)then do fastboot reboot
see then if it boots to the rom

Thanks for that rzr86, I'm starting to understand that now. It seems
that Kernel Flasher from ViperS 311 is a boot.img file with simple
program made by ViperS group that does what you mentioned, but without
the need for using adb and command line.
- However, I still don't understand what changes they made to that
boot.img to cause such complications... ?
Asianic installed correctly but than started crashing and booting in
loop so I replaced it with "Sense-o-Maniac" and this seems to be
working fine.
It doesn’t have any previous problems that I was experiencing on other
rom's.
I will report if any problems arise. So for so good.

Using kernel fasher
Hi ! I just joined this forum and might be this is my first question
I am quite interesting to install this ROM (viper) and would like to take a shot. But, I worry about this "kernel flasher" issue.
Here is my sensation status :
-HBOOT 1.29
-Firmware 3.33.707.151
-Radio 1176A.3504.OOU_1124A.3504.31_M
-S-ON
-Bootloader unlocked
-Rooted
I would to confirm some questions :
1. If I want to install this ROM can't I just simply install it to the latest version of ViperS 3.1.2?
2. Which one will come first flashing kernel (using kernel flasher) or installing ROM?
3. Will it be working using my current firmware?
Sorry for this noob question. Really appreciate your help, guys.
