Stock GT-I9020A: Won't boot, can't unlock bootloader - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Looking for some insight here. I have a second-hand Nexus S GT-I9020A that was replaced because it would no longer boot. I took on the challenge of trying to fix it. Based on the reading I've done so far it may have bad a bad NAND chip, but I'm too stubborn to give up on it just yet. Here are the symptoms:
When booting normally, it hangs on the Google screen with all 4 hardware buttons lit up.
Fastboot works, however I can't flash anything because its bootloader is locked, which brings me to my next point.
When issuing the command fastboot oem unlock, I am prompted with the familiar Yes/no screen but when selecting Yes, nothing seems to happen. I've left it for about 6-7 hours and came back to a message in my PC command window stating "Status read Failed (too many links)".
I can get into the stock recovery but that's really of no help at all. I can wipe cache partition without an issue but get an error when trying to wipe data/factory reset.
I've attempted the One-Click UnBrick software which I read somewhere is compatible with the Nexus S. It did recognize the phone, send a command, and give a success message. The phone rebooted but nothing changed.
So, this leaves me with nothing left to try but to post here. It seems that since I cannot even unlock the bootloader that my hands are tied. Are there any other tools that I should be aware of that can diagnose bad NAND flash? I don't want to toss the phone until I know I've tried everything I can to troubleshoot.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I tried to give as much detail about the problem as I could but if I left out any important info let me know.
Thanks!

Try flashing the official Android 4.1.2 image from Google in fastboot. See if it boots... Then maybe you will have more luck unlocking it! I would also try to wipe as many thing as possible before doing it. Try system, data, boot, cache, dalvik... Even sdcard might help...

It would seem that I can't flash anything, including official firmware, if the bootloader is locked?
On the plus side, the phone responds fine to the fastboot commands and seems to transfer the images to it just fine, just still no luck getting the darn bootloader unlocked

Normally it is possible to flash official ota from Google even if the bootloader is locked. What version did you have prior to your problems? Try flashing the ota package that came just after your version as it seems that the package your are trying with cannot be flashed over the version that you have right now!

Currently the phone has 2.3.6. I tried flashing 4.0.4, which was the next one, and it failed with the same error, indicating I need to unlock my bootloader. Also tried flashing the 2.3.6 firmware, received the same error. I'm starting to think I should probably give up on this phone.
Any more suggestions?

Did you try the OTA update from Google? That's weird cause I flashed it back then and I was on stock 2.3.6 with locked bootloader and stock recovery and it worked. Have you don't anything particular with your phone or is it pure stock 2.3.6? Start there

Thanks for posting that link. Still no luck though. I tried the 2.3.6 (GRK39C) -> 2.3.6 (GRK39F) OTA file and the 2.3.6 (GRK39F) -> 4.0.4 one as I am not sure which version of 2.3.6 that I have. Basically I am trying to use fastboot to apply the OTA update using fastboot -w update filename.zip however it is failing with the following message:
C:\Users\Steven\Downloads>fastboot -w update d1be8195481a.signed-sojua-GRK39F-fr
om-GRK39C.d1be8195.zip
archive does not contain 'android-info.txt'
archive does not contain 'android-product.txt'
error: update package has no android-info.txt or android-product.txt
C:\Users\Steven\Downloads>
The OTA updates indicate they can be flashed using stock recovery. However when I enter the recovery on the phone and select update from sdcard, I get the message indicating that it cannot mount /sdcard. Is there another way I should be doing this?

You have to rename the file to update.zip and place it on /sdcard. It will install it automatically. Stock recovery won't install custom zip file so that's why you need to do that. Let me know if it works...

[Q] Bricked Xoom, flashing not working. HELP!

This may be a dumb question but I need to ask, are you using adb and can you get into fastboot?

This is how I unbricked my xoom it will take you back to stock 3.0, then you will have to wait for the over the air updates before you can root again. Any questions, please ask. I have bricked my xoom a few times. Lol.

Yes I'm using adb, and yes, I'm in fastboot.
you must be in bootloader for fastboot commands(adb reboot bootloader)
put 4 stock .img files in platform-tools or tools(from where you are running fastboot)
that should do it.
needless to say your your bootloader must be unlocked for fastboot commands.
.................
the commands are given at motodev website.

I expect that you have copied all contents of "tools" folder to platform-tools folder.
Your bootloader must be unlocked to accept commands.
check the result of fastboot oem unlock.
Second : when xoom is not in bootloader mode type adb devices and check whether serial no of xoom is displayed.
Also recheck that you have java dev kit.
You may uninstall and then reinstall android sdk.
More than that I can not think of problem.
May be someone else.

I have copied all of "tools" into platform tools. However, I cannot check adb devices, because I cannot leave the "Dual Core technology" screen. It's stuck on that. I cannot even enter recovery mode! I will attempt to reinstal java dev kit, and android SDK. And I will post my reply on how that works. Thanks for your patience with me. I'm just quite frustrated nothing has worked so far...

Got it to work. I Google'd my issue, and I came up with a few possible issues. 1 being the usb cable, and the other being the usb port. Mine was a stock cable, so that wasn't the issue. But when I plugged the usb cable into the back of my pc (directly to the motherboards usb's) it worked, and I did not encounter the "command write failed"! successfully flashed the boot and system... ect img. and now my xoom is working!

Broken Flash Memory?

Hi Xda members,
I've been running Jelly Beans stock OTA (rooted though) since it was released here, and have been working out great so far.
A couple of days ago I got a number of strange notification pop-ups in just a few seconds while I was watching the screen...
The messages read something like "some app is requesting to run as super user" (well, don't remember which app or the exact message). Anyway, as I hadn't start any app at this point I thought it was a bit strange when several of these message popped up.
So I rebooted the mobile to see if it would make the pop-ups stop, but after this the mobile didn't boot up again, it just locked at the first boot screen (showing the Google text and the "Unlocked" symbol)...
I can still boot into the bootloader and the recovery. And I can reprogram the bootloader and the recovery partition through fastboot, but when trying to write to the boot partition through fastboot I get this output:
Code:
fastboot flash boot ./boot.img
sending 'boot' (8192 KB)... OKAY
writing 'boot'... FAILED (remote: Write Fail)
And in the recovery when I try to "choose zip from sdcard" I get "E: Can't mount /sdcard/".
Do you think the internal flash memory might be broken or could it be the partition table, or what else?
Best regards,
Olle
Same problem here...
I've got a similar problem oll3
Last saturday couldnt get my nexus s w/ stock JB to boot up, it just hanged on the Google logo. I thought it was due to a failing charger which I replaced. Then the phone worked fine for some hours until I had to reboot it. Again, stuck on Google logo. I tried booting to recovery and stumbled into the same error "E: Can't mount /sdcard/".
I've tried pretty much everything. Got the sdcard mounted couple of times which was enough to quickly take backups. However the sdcard mounts at random. Not at every boot, and yep, I've tested several old&new versions of recovery's. When the sdcard mounts, if managed to install several different rom's successfully but only to get stuck on the Google logo.
So I think it really can be a internal flash problem. I'll flash a stock rom and take the phone to the dealer for maintenance or replacement...
I'd be grateful if someone would point out how to get pass the google logo
aktuls, thanks for answering.
Unfortunately my guarantee period has passed since a couple of month. Hope you'll get your Nexus fixed, and please update me if you make any progress.

Actually I'm happy report some progress!
After busy night trying and also fiddling with the updates trying to get the JB 4.1.1 original flashed, I stumbled into error that said I have an old bootloader! Ok, I checked up the latest needed for JB 4.1.1 which the adb reported as "i9020XXLC2" and flashed it. Now I got the rom flashed and the phone has been rebooted several times today without any hiccups. :good:
So I suggest you and everyone else, stuck in Google logo, having flashed some JB based rom, to check you bootloader version and update it if needed ! Hope this helps some !
If you have a custom recovery, there's also a chance you have that version which can't mount the SDcard. I don't recall the exact version, but one of them won't mount the SDcard with that error. Updating it fixes that.
instead of flashing each partition: boot,...
type: fastboot -w update "image-...-...zip file"
I have now run fastboot update with factory image of different versions. At least it successfully flashed boot partition, but instead it now fails on the writing of system:
Code:

Have tried with different bootloader versions, recoveries, different versions of CWM recovery. Nothing seems to get me past the writing of system partition. In cwm 6.0.1.0 recovery I still can't mount/format the sdcard.
Partitioning the sdcard in cwm gives me "Done!", but when looking in the log file it reports some error about "you are not using parted v1.8.8.1.179-aef3!", don't know what that's suppose to mean.
Anything else I should try?

Try miktouch or another stock based ROM so you don't need to flash kernel
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Is there a particular miktouch I should try? Would the below link be good to try?(for some reason having hard time finding)
"cx.com/mycx/share/jzvMU-erEeGfjBICOBql1A/MikTouch-0.7-signed.zip"
And just follow the steps and flash it vs cm9, correct?
Any stock based ROM is easier to flash as you don't need to flash the kernel afterwards through fastboot. Also cm9 is one of the few Roms I have seen issues for people when trying to flash, granted it is one of the better Roms out there, but right now you are just trying to get this working again, so stick with easy.
And I would think that's a good link, but didn't check

On some of my Linux distros I would have to use fastboot flash with a ./ before it would work.
./fasboot flash boot boot.Img
I have no idea why it was like this but it helped me a fee times on the DS. If its anything else I'd have no idea, I haven't messed with this since I sent mine off to a XDA user here.

Thanks. Not using linux, but tried .\fastboot with no difference in results. Thanks for trying. Anyone else have any other ideas?

You said you are able to get into recovery? Try factory resetting there
Download this 1.44.1107 S-Off PG59IMG Hboot. Rename it to PG59IMG.zip. Send it to the sdcard, and reboot into the bootloader. It will then be installed automatically. This may or may not solve the problem. Try flashing a ROM now.

dont you need to be locked to do this? i've tried "fastboot oem lock" but it has an error about too many links and the phone shuts off and it shows that it is still unlocked. I tried the PG59IMG.zip anyway and it said parsing and went right back to hboot within a second.. Flashed miktouch rom. Restarted phone, still just stuck on logo screen.
What do you see in the bootloader? Has something changed? Try flashing a recovery this time. The latest Clockworkmod should be fine. Then see what happens.

I don't see any differences in the bootloader. Is there something specific you think may have changed.
Do you want me to try to reflash the cwm 5.0.2.7 version(currently loaded) or a different version(I didn't see a newer version for 4g slide)?

Bootloop! Unable to flash stock rom or lock bootloader (Help)

Hi. I can't get passed the google splash screen on a Nexus 5 D821 and could use some help.
Here are the facts:
* The owner of the device told me it bricked after an update.
* The Bootloader is unlocked. When i tried to lock i got the following message:
Code:
fastboot oem lock
...
OKAY [ 0.041s]
finished. total time: 0.041s
But it wasnt persistent. When given reboot comand the phone switched OFF instead. I turned it on to bootloader again and it was still unlocked.
* I tried flashing stock rom LRX22c manually after a failed attempt with the flash-all script. I got the following error for bootloader, radio, boot and recovery:
Code:
FAILED (remote: flash write failure)
* I tried erasing cache and flashing userdata but the after over 60 minutes waiting i came to the conclusion that i wasnt going anywhere and just rebooted the phone.
*The only thing im actually able to flash without an error message is system.img:
Code:
fastboot flash system ~/Downloads/hammerhead-lrx22c/image-hammerhead-lrx22c/system.img
target reported max download size of 1073741824 bytes
erasing 'system'...
OKAY [ 0.127s]
sending 'system' (981472 KB)...
OKAY [ 30.934s]
writing 'system'...
OKAY [ 62.705s]
finished. total time: 93.767s
* I tried booting TWRP, but i was unable to mount the file system (perhaps because i wasnt able to flash it. i used "fastboot boot twrp.img").
Are phones technically able to get to splash screen or bootloader with a damaged NAND or EEMC chip? Im starting to consider the possibility of a hardbrick. Why would i be able to write system.img if that was the case though? Any help is welcome
===============================================
alright so im pretty sure its a hard brick. The emmc is dead. its a shame :/ guess ill just try to sell it for parts. I would delete this thread because its pretty useless, but i have created my account a few days ago, and i ddont know how to.
You've only flashed the system img?
Do all the img's one by one. Recovery, boot, system, radio, userdata. Then fastboot reboot

I have tried all of the imgs in their respective order. they all failed. i got the error
Code:
FAILED (remote: flash write failure)
. system.img was the only .img i was able to write, and i was wondering why. Also, when i try fastboot reboot the phone switches off. It doesnt reboot.

Unable to restore Pixel 2 to Factory

Hey everyone!
I'm a long time reader, but never had the occasion to post until now. I have somewhat recently started tinkering with my phones. I'm a programmer by trade so I'm not at all seperated from technology, however, I fear I may have gotten myself into a but of a ?.
So, here's what I broke: I have a Verizon Wireless Pixel 2. A few weeks ago I read that there was a boot loader unlock for it. As such, I rebooted to the boot loader, ran the "fastboot flashing lock_critical" command. After being unlocked I then proceeded to flash TWRP and then Magisk Manager. All was well until my phone had an unrelated warranty issue. As such, I filed a claim, and got my new phone.
Today I was trying to recover my phone to factory and am getting a few errors. I downloaded this Image from Google "8.0.0 (OPD3.170816.023, Nov 2017, Verizon) - https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/walleye-opd3.170816.023-factory-f269631e.zip"). I extracted it, and ran "flash_all.bat". Througout the process I get an error stating that it can't find a recovery.img. I looked in the .zip and found that to be true. I downloaded the standard stock .zip and noticed it doesn't have one either. In addition, when it gets to the part about flashing the system image I get the following error:
target reported max download size of 536870912 bytes
archive does not contain 'boot.sig'
archive does not contain 'recovery.img'
archive does not contain 'system.sig'
archive does not contain 'vendor.sig'
Erase successful, but not automatically formatting.

Anyone have any idea how to remedy this? I'm simply trying to get it back to stock. In addition, if I can get it returned to stock is relocking the bootloader even possible?
Thanks in advance for any help!

is your phone currently on 8.0.0 or have you been updated to at least 8.1?
you can't flash to a lower version than what you already have. i have verizon and i plan on flashing back to stock and you should be flashing to the 013 version from January.

It was on 8.1. Makes sense, I'll download the latest and try that. I just chose that because it says "VZW" in the name.

try everything over and start clean:
1) delete all your stuff from your comp (all previous tools and images)
2) download the fresh set of latest adb tools from google
3) download the latest walleye stock image from google
4) put all those things in the same directory and uncompress them there (so flash-all.bat is in the same folder as adb, along with the img and zip files for walleye).
5) adb reboot bootloader
6) flash-all
are those similar to the steps that you did before?

Just so you know, those "archive does not contain" errors are normal. I get them all the time. Always did on the original Pixel too. I'm not sure about the one at the end. Can't say I've ever seen that on either the Pixel 1 or 2.

Were you able to sort out your issue?
If not, I have heard good things about using this tool to install the latest factory image. Just download this script and follow the instructions in that thread.
If that goes well, then you should be able to boot to the latest build and ready to lock the bootloader, which will factory reset the phone as part of the process.
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flashing lock
If that process makes you feel uncomfortable, I found this post from another thread doing a similar method (but not using the script above)
Good Luck!

Thanks for the re-assurance. I did notice that the zips literally dont contain a recovery.img. Is that normal for the Pixel 2?

Yes. The recovery is in the boot.img now.

I tried this tool and had no luck either. I ultimately just locked the bootloder, as-is, and sent it back. ? Hopefully the think it's just a component level failure since the boot loader is locked. I guess we will see... ?

They won't even check, they don't care. They will inspect it for physical abuse and water damage. That is all.

I think you're right! So far so good. I haven't had any backlash from Verizon so far. Thanks!
