[Q] not make sense without sdcard - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

pls, someone explain how you guys who are using nexus 4 and going to get nexus 5, how you guys can possible use your phone without sdcard?
I just cannot image a using without sdcard which give me much extra space and freedom to change it and make backups.
sdcard is not just extra space, it is separate disc in your phone.
Also, the speed of micro sdcard such as "Kingston microSDHC/SDXC Card Class 10 64gb" never been issue for me on sgs4 i9505.
And for me it is terrible idea to use any external storage, while I can have everything inside my phone, all the time.
Here some talking about much more terrible idea, using cloud or stream services instead micro sdcard, this insane for me.
I cannot understand why Google is doing it, and why you folks follow this rule.

Some people don't need a lot of space. I much prefer larger internal storage over SD card any day. Though i need 64 for all my music which is an issue with nexus devices. For many people 16 is enough though. 1 backup, decent amount of apps, little to no music, and all is well. Some people just have different needs. SD storage is slow and limited anyways. I wish it was completely rid of and larger internal storage options were offered for all devices. Google has been trying to get rid of SD card storage for quite a while.

can't store much porn on a 16gb phone...

Stream music and porn, streaming is the best. But you must have a good connextion where you live. For trips seagte wifi or OTG ftw.

Stop hoping for SD Card storage, hope for return of USB On-The-Go is better!
In USB Flash drive, you can store so much HD Porn and tons of music and many more (impossible to super application there) using USB OTG!
But for me, 32GB is enough for everything

I don't store music or movies on my phone so it has never been an issue.

At least on my SGS3 using a sdcard is pain because it always disconnects from the device.

never had this problem on sgs3 and nowadays on sgs4

This thread needed to be deleted, there has been at least 10,00 threads like this in the past. Nexus never had sdcard after the Nexus One. It never will get sdcard again in one million year, stop asking. Use cloud storage or USB OTG or get the 32gb version or buy a different phone. I wish it was against the forum rule to make these threads.

You deserve to treat yourself better.
If you don't like it get another phone.
Get a google play edition phone.
You have plenty of options nowdays.

How do people live without SD storage? Easy. Steam music, use cloud storage.

32gb is a good amount of storage on a phone. Need to make backups USB-OTG all the way for that and use cloud storage for allot of things. anything under 32gb for me is not enough.

cloud service is a crap to keep files to which you need access most of the time, I do not want pay for unlimited mobile internet which not every where available and have the same speed.
cloud service can be used just maybe for backup and sync, and of course for the files which you wanna share.
On my phone 16gb internal storage and 32gb micro sdcard and this amount very close to be full. And not going to manage my files just because google want it.

Then a NEXUS device is not for you. Use a phone that does support micro sdcard storage. I just hope, for your sake, that other device manufacturers don't follow suit and get rid of that old technology. :good:

I disagree. Cloud is great..there is no way I'm getting my 500GB music collection on my phone while still using it as a phone, without the cloud. I use Subsonic, Google Music, and Pogoplug Cloud, as well as the usual Drive/Dropbox/Keep solutions for everyday junk. 16 or 32 becomes insiginificant once you move your mind into the cloud, either personal (subsonic,Pogo) or service provider (Google,Dropbox,etc.).

Thats it. I think google push cloud services a bit forward with every single release (Android, ChromeOS) and thats good in my eyes.
More users + more devices = increasing demand for faster mobile internet speed.
Only some mobile operators need to follow - their main purpose is still the same - pull from our pockets as much money as possible.
Just think what happend with CromeOS, great stuff but 70% people around the glob can't use OS for normal operations.
Again problem, slow internet connections. Google was sure in year 2012 world will be more hi-speed covered with optical internet.
I don't know if u know for project FLAG (Fiber-Optic Link Around the Globe). Almost all world countrys are covered with optical
internet the main fu*king problem are our stupid internet providers. They still selling old technology.

Don't believe cloud storage will be a plausible alternative until mobile phone providers stop being money hungry power giants. On at&t its 10 bucks for a single gigabyte of data I believe. At least their 3gb plan is $30. That's insanely expensive if you plan on relying on cloud services to keep your media. I listen to music 2+ hours a day. I would be spending at least $100 on data overcharges a month. There is no way I plan on making a switch to cloud storage for at least the next 3-4 years. Even then I doubt mobile data charges will have gone down, at all. Maybe $7.50 a gigabyte but even that is way too much.

No SD slot?

[Q] With the Galaxy Nexus coming, my only concern is the lack of SD slot. So I thought I'd ask you Nexus S owners what it's like living without an SD card. Is it a pain, or is it not a big deal outside of not being able to increase space?

So far it has been more than enough for me. I DO use google music however, so that saves a lot of space.

I believe it brings an SD Card. Also its not a pain at least on my end. I haven't reached 6 gb yet and we all have 16 here. Unless u put massive amounts of music into your Memory then that's when Ull have to worry lol. But there's Google music for that (if u haven't been invited yet) I use it all the time but quality is alright, with voodoo its better than beats

Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
i was worried about it too at first but imo the transfer speeds make it all worth it.
and for the record the "16bg" actually amounts to .98gb internal storage and 13.31gb usb storage.
Not a big deal, I hardly fill even half of it..heck my previous milestone with sdcard slot+8gb experienced the same.
again, depends on your usage behavior..horses for courses.
I wasn't sure at first but don't miss having card slot in the end. 16gb is a lot (roughly half full local music and all) and btw the Galaxy Nexus even offers 32gb model (Expansys is listing it in both 16gb and 32gb) if you need more space.
In the end i don't regret getting my Nexus S (I miss not getting it in black tho).
Not a deal breaker in my opinion. Whether it's 16GB or 32GB, you'll find a way to fill it and have to transfer anyways.
I do use my 32GB card for a lot of music, but if Google music becomes more available, then perhaps that won't be an issue. Except I do love my PowerAmp.
Does it make flashing new ROMs any different?

No. Its important to remember there IS a 16 or 32 gb partition that behaves exactly as SD card, the only difference is you cannot remove it. But I don't think of this as a problem because you can just mount it to PC and copy/move everything all the same.

For me, the issue was never about removing it, but more about whether it changed anything as far as modding is concerned. That, and the fact that I could get a galaxy s 2 or even Droid razor with 16 GB of memory then add my 32 GB card for enough space to replace my Zune.

I thought it would be a huge sacrifice before I bought the NS but it has really been a non-issue. There is plenty of space for apps + pictures and I use Subsonic for music. Only issue I foresee is if you plan on shooting several hours of 1080p video as that will easily eat up 16GB.
I've had my NS4G for about 2 weeks after having an xperia x10 for a year with an sd card for storage.
I use mine for music, and I come very close to filling it on a regular basis....I'd love to have the option to recycle my old 8gb card from my old phone, but I can't. And no, it doesn't hold "a ton" of music, as previously stated. I have about 4gb of music and about 4gb for apps, roms, backups, etc. and I have to always pick what music I want to transfer, and what music I am going to sacrifice.
Honestly, it's not THAT big of a deal, but having an option to expand your storage would be a no-brainer, I would think. It's not like it costs that much to add an sd slot...and I'm sure people who use their phone as an mp3 player, video camera, whatever, would happily pay an extra few $$ for the option to be able to expand your storage.
Also, I find it easiest to transfer apps to other people by just backing them up to SD card and inserting it in their phone for a quick install....I can't do this anymore, which means I have to jump through hoops and email the app or worse, use bluetooth, which is always a headache with people who don't know what they are doing.....ALWAYS. SD just saves me from the headaches.
Installing roms, apps, flashing zips, etc is exactly the same...you'll never even notice the difference unless you like to remove your sd card to transfer files all the time, or something like that.
In the long run it's up to you, and if you are used to having expandable storage, you will definitely miss it....but it's the size of the sacrifice that makes it a deal breaker or not.

hey if you want a google music invite PM your email
I rarely miss sd card slot actually never. Google music has all my music and it works every well you can even download your tracks for offline use.Plus my spotify account
I suppose if for someone that wants to load their phone with blueray rips and be able to watch every movie they every owned at any given second it might be a difficult situation.
Flashing roms is the same since your 16gb is partition for internal space then 12gb is left for storage and it acts the same as a sd card, even in a file manager it will show as teh sd card hope this helps
Didn't google release an API for google music, or am I thinking of something else. I would love it if PowerAmp could access google music streaming.

If you don't have a computer or laptop with you, then you can't mount to anything.
I can put GB's of movies on cards and swap them out whenever I want when traveling.
I have 80GB of music. I guess if you have a small amount of music or only want to carry a small % with you, then internal memory is fine.
If you keep phones 2 years (like most do on contract), 32GB might seem like a lot now, but how will that look in 20 months? With a card slot, it isn't an issue- you can upgrade anytime.
All that being said, for most people 32GB with no card slot is probably enough.

[Q] How to survive without an SD card??

Hello fellow XDA members,
I may be upgrading to my first smartphone without an SD card since the first moto droid came out. I have become very dependent on my SD cards, my current phone has a 64gb SD card which I am using a good portion of it.
My assumption is that about 95% of all people use their phone for their music device. I DO NOT stream. I would not have the data capacity for that. I put all of my 2000 songs on my SD card and throw on the shuffle or sift through and find what I like. I do this because I drive over 20-30 hours a week and steaming would easily crush my data for more important things and also I think it's pointless to not stream exactly the songs you want that at that moment.
I also have approximately 2000 pictures and growing. Which I would prefer to keep on my phone to reference when necessary or just look through for memories.
What to do If I upgrade to a new phone with only 32gb internal storage, leaving approximately 25gb of space left for stuff.
What do you people use? How do you deal with having limited storage but being a heavy user? I cannot legitimately think of anything without making sacrifices on how I use the phone meaning I'd have to remove many pictures and songs to have room for apps and other stuff, which obviously I don't want to do, and I can't burn through data.
Thank you so much guys! I appreciate any advice!

You have Wi-Fi, don't you? Why don't you just backup all your photos on Google Drive? That could free up a decent bit of space off of your phone. As for music, I would recommend that you backup the songs you usually don't listen to on Drive as well. When you get home, you could backup your stuff, and you could retrieve whatever you need from Drive some time before you leave. I'm sure you've already thought of this, but just a suggestion in case you haven't. =P

Try using basic cleaning. Apps that you dont use uninstall them as it took 3 gb of unused apps on my Phone

A solution so obvious you might have overlooked it, just don't use your phone for a music player. Get a Sandisk Sansa Clip Zip (or Fuze) .mp3 player and stick a microSD card in there. I've been using a Clip Zip for a couple years now. Small, weighs practically nothing, has great sound (with some tweaks). Plays FLAC too. Or just use an old phone as a media player.

Definitely get root access and remove all unneccesary system applications first.
Then, let's say you download an app that "needs" a physical sdcard - what do you do then?
Well, if I'm not mistaken there are ways to mount a "virtual sdcard" by repartitioning the unallocated space/taking some space out of another partition to act like an external sdcard. This will fool the problematic apps into thinking you have a real sdcard in, and then they will work correctly.
This would be more toward the technical side of this question, but yeah.

I do have two nandroid backups, and I keep switching between them. Each one is nearly considered another phone with its own apps xD
But I use this method mainly because I like modding my SM-G7102, so one backup is main, and another for testing new stuff and experiencing performance issues.
Good luck with your new phone.

I really think the idea of no SD card isn't necessarily a bad thing. As long as you have enough internal space. I have a 64gb SD card and I'm only using 18gb including 3 backups which total somewhere around 8gb.
I think about 25gb internal after rom and essentials should be more than enough. I only have 16gb of internal space of which 12gb is usable so I definitely think it's possible with 32gb

I dont know, I have 2000 pictures and 2000 songs both of which grow on a somewhat regular basis. Right now I'm using 24gb of my 64gb SD card. I have no backups on mine. Its 100% songs/pictures with maybe a little app data. In order to use the new phone I will have to do what someone said and get a separate music player. There's pretty much no other way for the quantity I have.

Yea songs tend to take up more room in general. I have 3gb of music and it's only a hair over 300 songs, and yea in your case a separate music player would be good
From my Wicked S3 on SOKP
There's several things that I did when I switched from SD -> Internal Storage.
First, most of the data I used was saved in the cloud. Google Photos backed up all my photos, music was streamed, etc. This allowed me to conserve a lot of space. Of course, if you don't have an unlimited data plan, then this isn't the best option.
Aside from that, there are apps that will help manage your internal storage. You essentially end up removing apps you don't need/use. This primarily includes games because they tend to be the largest apps.
For photos and videos, limit the amount that you store on your phone and use WiFi to fetch from the cloud as much as possible.
For music, same as above.
For media in general, if you want to go to super space efficient mode, save media in a compressed / lower quality format. For photos and videos this may mean low res. For music, change the bit rate of MP3s or don't use flac. Of course, this is if you can tolerate the loss in quality.
A potentially weird solution would be to archive (as zip, bzip, 7z, etc.) anything that you don't use.

Not weird at all - I discovered the usefulness (not a word?) of zipping up unneeded files as .zips, .bz2s and .rars about a half a year ago, and it's been a real lifesaver!
Do it, guys - it actually saves space!

[Q] What do you think, SD card or no?

Do you think Google will add SD Slot on the new nexus line or will they keep it without it so people can use more "cloud" ????
Trying to think if I should wait or not to buy a new phone

Not adding a SD card slot is part of Google's policy for many years.

SD card or not? I don't think is a problem, with a 32GB phone you have plenty of space. Now, if you like having a lot of music, photos, videos and movies it might not be enough. The SD card option is always welcome, after reading all of google reasons not to include a SD card on the nexus line up, I still don't get it. Is always nice to have some extra space.

I had a Galaxy S II and a Note II and I'm now more than happy to not have sd card issues or difficulties to reverse internal/external memory and so on...
32GB is enough on my end even if we can expect a 64GB model.

I had an S3. I didn't have too many issues with /extSdCard. It was nice having the extra memory but in this day and age, I no longer see the need for one as long as I have sufficient onboard space. That said, I bought the 16 GB N5 and it turned out it was not enough for me.

Actually I didn't have any issue with my Note II but I saw a LOT of users who were complaining about this or were wondering about how to apply such mod or how to return to a regular setup... It was a pain. We do not have this on the N5 and that's a good thing.

I had an S4 and it was great having extra space and never had problems, the reason why I would like to have one is because last week I had a situation with my nexus 5, I tried to install the SNAPSHOT M10 (CM11) OTA and I had a Nightly version installed so it messed up my phone and I had to push another ROM thru ADB .... if I had the SD slot I could've just plugged in an SD card on the computer and copied to the card
yea, and I got the 16GB N5 too, doesn't seem to be enough

You wouldn't have had to remove the sdcard. Just mount USB mass storage from recovery
adb push is only a minor inconvenience. You should be able to do it in your sleep.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
None of my phones have had one, so while I may not know what I'm missing it seems I'm fine without it. Last phone was 16GB and currently at 32GB. I only ever keep a few albums of music on at one time, and I delete most videos or games when I'm done with them.
If I did use one I would make sure to buy the fastest SD card avaiable that cost 3x as much, as I would not want it to become a bottleneck.

32gb is definitely not enough. I need that amount of space just for my apps, and AT LEAST another 32gb for my music. That's one of the main reasons why I always have an iPhone as well- more storage space. I had the 64gb iPhone 5s and it was maxed. My 32gb N5 is maxed, and I don't have a single song on it. I can't stand streaming music.

I hear you, but Google Play Music is not bad, the problem is that you need to have internet to listen to your songs... but i wanted more space for my music, I have over 80gb of music on my PC and I wanna be able to play them on my phone without having to stream it thru Play Music
I have an old iPod Video (1st gen) that I se for my music, it has 120GB and it's almost maxed with videos and music
For me, Play music just doesn't cut it. Every file I've ever listened to from Play has had horrible compression artifacts. Spotify extreme quality is passable in a pinch, but I like my lossless files. ALAC on iPod/iPhone, FLAC on everything else.

Got one from the store

It's a really funny key to push the new smaller SIM card out, so I guess the back cover does not come off? What about the memory card - did not find any slot for it?

Yes I paid $750 for the phone with no memory card - did not even ask the salesperson assumed it's there.
You get 100gb of free cloud storage with onedrive when you activate it on the note 5. So even though you lose on device storage, that's still a bonus to have space to put stuff when needed but not used daily.

Considering getting a Note 5. Have some questions

Hey all. I'm considering switching to a Note 5. I currently have a Note 3. I switched to t mobile from att last week and picked up a LG V10 which I am supposed to start using tomorrow. I'm now considering this phone. I had a concern about battery life but from what I see here after rooting and running a custom ROM battery life seems great. I'm concerned about the storage with no sd card. If I got this phone, I'd get the 64 gb version. I'm wondering if samsung has any solution to uploading your photos/videos while on the go. I'm going on vacation for 10 days next month and I know this limited amount of storage wouldn't be enough unless I uploading my photos and videos somewhere each night. I won't have my pc with me. Does samsung have a place to upload? If not where do you upload? Thanks

I use Google photos as well it's imo the nicest and most user friendly cloud upload for photos. However you could auto upload to dropbox, or onedrive. If you have a Microsoft 365 account you get 1 TB of onedrive space included with your account plus you get an additional 100 GB via a Samsung offer when you buy the Note 5. I use Google photos as my primary and onedrive as a redundancy backup.
I thought I was going to miss the sd card slot as well but I don't. I got the 64 and I also carry a 64 GB sandisk otg/usb combo drive which you get usually find on sale at reasonable prices on amazon.

Having had both, the note 3 and the 5 honestly, I think I should have went with the 4. I like the 5 and all but I do miss the SD card, I use Google photos as has been mentioned but having to delete photos and videos is aggravating to me. Between photos, videos, music and apps I am out of space, granted, I have the 32gb but the 64gb would be the same in time.
I have not rooted this phone, been holding out for Samsung pay and my bank to work together, says coming soon. Regardless tho, that's something else I am tired of...I should have stayed with nexus devices in regard to root the more I think about it lol. Anyways, getting off topic now.
I got the 5 because costco had a $250 rebate, Samsung had the holiday promotion and Samsung pay had a $100 credit for purchasing from samsung.com if you sign up for and activate a card. When I added all that up it was just to good of a deal to pass up on.
Just get one of these.

The Note 5 is so much better than the 4. I think the 3 was better than the 4 but the 5 is a great device as long as you can get over the storage. I think a Keychain OTG thumb drive is a good compromise for those with additional storage needs.
Yes please dont fall into the trap of so many being dependent on an sd card. There are so many choices to use and honestly 50 gb of data on your phone just because is a lil crazy. You have as mentioned above plenty of storage alternatives and videos I simply upload to Youtube and privately share or watch.
People seem to forget that sometimes phones take a dump, get lost, stolen or break. Now with your whole life on the phone what next?
Great phone, first time not rooting in 6 years or so and with package disabler and a conscious effort to effectively keep my phone from being bogged with crap things are working out lovely.... Plus I use and love Samsung pay

I have a thought......
Because of Qi charging. The Micro SD will be seldom used. The Note 5 is slick so most people will end up using a case....so..... I am waiting for someone to build a case that has a microsd built in that connects to the usb port and it does not interfere with Wireless qi & NFC use. If someone builds it... I want my 10%! I thought of it first :silly:

People just hate change that's all I swapped a S2 for a Nexus and didn't not sweating the 16gb hard drive just did what I had to do. We are just a bunch of complainers and entitled people that's all.... Lol
I guess the future will be personal cloud ?.. people will have their own wireless storage as a wearable device and it can be accessed without any wires or case and it can be used with laptop, phone and may also be encrypted from others stealing it ?

My Note 4 is my go to device but I also have a Note 5. I thought about getting a V10 but I need the SPen so I had no other choice if I wanted something new.
Somebody mentioned how SD cards are not reliable and can mess up resulting in lost data. Frankly, that hardly ever happens. In years of SD card use I've never had that happen to me but I did have my Note 5 become completely unresponsive. It would not turn on at all and I had to get a replacement from TMobile. Guess what? I lost all the pics I had taken that day because even though I use Google photos, I only sync the pics when charging and on WiFi to avoid using too much cellular data. If I had an SD card I would have been able to pull the pics off the card even though the phone wouldn't turn on.
Some people say there is a good reason for the SD card feature being removed. The only reason is profit. Why could they not have made it work? Some people say it's because the memory isn't compatible with the new memory being used on these phones but I don't believe that. Why is it that OTG works? Couldn't they have just made an SD card slot that worked the same way as OTG?
I like the Note series but I sure hope we get back expandable storage.

Expandable sd slot is built into the chpset. USB otg is not. Think of it as a truck. The bed is built into the body, but to get more room you get a trailer hitch and trailor.
Now we have an suv instead of a truck. That's why swapping primary storage drives was a thing on some older phones. Instead of using a actual nand flash, some phones used a micro SD card for internal and a second for expandable.
On some devices you could actually change to the Expandable storage being the "internal" storage via bootloader.
The type of chip being used in the note 5 is not capable of running a micro SD card and maintain high speed for the onboard. The how to just isn't there yet.
Regardless of that being bs. The other thing about designs, the shells are made first, then the rest of the product. Outside in.
