Would be nice but we have to work with what we have for now.
I wish I would be able to transform completely the look of the sms app to look somewhat like the clean design present on htc sense. I hate lg UI it really looks terrible, cartoonesk **** and huge font. Lg design is so 90s, I seriously hate it badly! I

I have used HandcentSMS for a couple years now. They have a lot of add on things for it, from color, to seasonal themes. All sorts of things you can do with it. And it is Free.

Yeah, I've used Handcent on every android device I've had, going way back to my HTC Incredible. I may go back again, but I'm kind of enjoying the Stock experience on my G2.
To be honest, I never even tried the stock sms app. I just kept using handcentsms.

Just about as simple as it sounds. The evo theme is dark, but the mms app is obnoxiously black on white. It's kinda blinding in dark rooms. Yeah handcent can do that but that's way over kill for a texting app for my use. I'm using the fresh rom, btw. Thanks.
marketplace
Download ChompSms and you can customize all the colors and even make it themed like Iphones sms system. It's a nifty and FREE little app. I donated to remove adds and its been well worth it. Give it a shot. Worst case scenario, you uninstall it.
I too am wanting to have this white on black or white on gray feature WITHOUT going the third party route of using chompsms or handcent. I like the simple features if the stock sense app. waking up early and reading missed texts is blinding lol.
I know you said you don't want another app but this is the messaging app from AOSP and it replaces the default HTC messaging app. Just flash it in recovery.

I would also like to see this I really hate how bright it is. The only problem with aosp messaging is you can't use the HTC messaging widget
AOSP would be the easiest, making the sense app black you would either need to pretty much completely rewrite the xml or you would need to theme all the Sense apps through com.htc.resources. All the HTC apps get there style from com.htc.resources, I was going to make them black in my blue theme but the HTC stuff is way to integrated into android.

Yep. Both of my messaging widgets work. But I'm on a different ROM (Myn's Warm 2.2), so maybe that could have something to do with it?
potentially but i think i may try it

I use both GO Launcher and GO SMS as of today....very amazing.
Beats LauncherPro and ADW IMO.
Allows a folder style just like the iphones in the app drawer where you drag and drop apps on apps to make folders. It also allows different app drawer styles....left to right scrolling or top to bottom.
It also has re sizable widgets...just like launcher pro plus.
Its overall the snappiest launcher i've used.
Here's some screenshots of my setup!

I haven't found one thing I DIDN'T like about the launcher.

It isn't much different, does it offer custom docks, swipe gestures, widgets?
Not knocking it at all, its just lacking a bit

I really like GO SMS, but I'm a huge fan LP+...don't see me switching anytime soon. Plus the dev of LP is planning something huge in the app development. Which I hope is coming soon, with the release of ADW EX.
He's gonna rewrite the app instead of basing it off the android launcher...been at it a long time tho

Yeah, that's what I saw on his webpage...hope it drops soon.
Go launcher is the only one I use as well. Lp is kool but I really like that built in app uninstaller and task stop. Its pretty tight especially on the synergy rom.
I haven't used GO Launcher, but I am using GO SMS right now and I am impressed. It seems to be pretty laggy for me, but that is improving with every update, and that I have now set message limits. Also, the turn on screen pop up function is lacking.
It looks nice...MIUI'ish

Still doesn't beat LP or ADW, it lacks everything those two have and the overall layout looks ugly.

have you even tried it..lol
I have paid versions on LP and ADW Ex. I am currently using Go Launcher. It is fast and unobtrusive. I always worry that by adding more features the launchers get bogged down.
I will probably try customizing ADW some more but right now I like Go launcher. I used LP for the longest time before.
People keep requesting more and more features in the Go Launcher thread in the Android Apps section. I actually hope they don't add to much.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Just gave both a try. I really like the go launcher, but its missing a few things I like. I would like the ability to shrink the dock size and put a custom background. I like the app drawermuch better than lp or ADW.
not too shabby
The lagginess of the app drawer scrolling. Maybe it's because I'm so used to LauncherPro but it just doesn't feel smooth. I really do like all the other aspects of Sense though.
Completely agree stop when you get to the end don't iust slow down. Very annoying.

Say what you will about touchwiz, but they got it right with the horizontal app drawer scrolling. I love that option in ADW launcher as well. I just wish sense gave you that option somehow.

I really don't like horizontal app drawers. I'd actually love a WP7 style list.
The one thing I don't like about Sense is the inability to remap the right button. I don't need the bloody personalize button there all the time.

At least that's possible with root. I can remap the right button to whatever I want. I don't think it's possible to have sense + horizontal app drawer, though, even with root.
I like the horizontal app drawer because unlike vertical app drawer, I don't over-scroll.
Agreed I really wished we could use launcherpros 3d app drawer. I like beautiful widgets but at the end its just not quite as elegant as HTC's sense widget.

I recommend go launcher ex over either of those. I never actually see anyone else recommend it though, but it's a drastic change from sense. It has a horizontal sliding app drawer and I never notice lag. You can do a vertical one as well if you like with it, though I dont see why. The only complaint I might have is the lack of built in widgets (it only has 2 right now), but they're adding more. However, I dont care about those anyways.

OK, I've tried all the big ones, go contacts ex, dialer one, and TouchPal Dialer. Each one seems to have a unique feature or coolness to it, mostly go contacts or TouchPal, but they seem to be lacking or be incomplete... For example when using go and trying to edit a contact... You can't join multiple contacts together... If i was going to use a third party dialer I would want to freeze at the least the stock... With a third party sms app, i use handcent, i don't lose any functionality save for maybe the green dot.. But who uses that? Haha, so what in curious is, is out of all the dialers what is everyone's personal recommendations?

My dialer has to be efficient to work with a large contact list (good search). I don't need integration with anything else than Google Contacts (no Facebook, etc). But I'l like some management tools, like 'call back tomorrow' with alarm, integration with a todo list, etc.
