Hello,
I had a few issues with my HTC One XL, and decided to take the plunge and factory restore my phone. There was nothing that I could think of that I wanted other than my photos, so I backed up all my photos to my PC, and got to restoring it.
Once it was done I realised that I had notes I wish to keep. These notes were quite important to me. Is there any way to get these notes back? My phone is not rooted and on Android 4.2.2. This wouldn't be such a hassle if my phone wasn't running in MTP when I plug it into my computer.
Any help is appreciated,
Thank you.
P.S I'm new when it comes to phone terminology so excuse any silly questions, or if I don't understand what you're saying.
P.P.S Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I'm 90% sure it's not. I have been up all night trying to figure this out and this is my last hope.
There are data recovery programs available for Windows that might be able to recover your data, but if you've written to the sd card since the wipe those chances are slimmer.

I have tried around 4 or 5 recovery programs. They are unable to continue as they require the device to be in USB mass storage mode. My phone won't do that because it constantly goes through MTP.
I have not written ANYTHING to the SD card since.
The only way I can think of to get it to mount in usb mass storage mode is through a custom recovery, for which you'd need an unlocked bootloader.

With an unlocked bootloader, that deletes absolutely everything, doesn't it?
It deleted texts/call logs etc but it left all my photos and music alone.

Anyway I could back up the deleted note files? Or something?
Should I just do it and hope to God it doesn't rid of it haha?
I'd at least try it. Look at it this way, if you don't try your data is gone, if you try and it fails your data is still gone but at last you have a chance at restoring it.

Well now my phone won't turn on at all, it is doing something as the computer is saying that it's picking up a USB but can not recognise it.
Screen is black.
What were you doing directly before this happened? Is the device registering on the PC as anything? Perhaps QHSUSB_DLOAD? I certainly hope not.

Don't say that to me. I'm pretty sure I just read QHSUSB_DLOAD in the Device Installing thing on Windows.... I'll double check if I can.
Oh dear, QHSUSB_DLOAD means a brick. What had you done/attempted beforehand?
Sent from my Evita
Yep, just double checked and it's QHSUSB_DLOAD.
I was on what I believe is the last step of rooting it. Unlocked the bootloader and flashed a custom recovery. Just went to enter recovery the last time and it didn't turn back on.
Which recovery did you flash? What's the exact filename?
Sent from my Evita
Knowing me it's problem wrong, I tried to do as much research as I could...
openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.0-endeavoru.img
It did boot after I flashed it though.
(Sorry if it takes a while to reply, I have to wait 5 minutes between them due to being a newcomer)
Oh no. That's a recovery for the HTC One X. The Endeavoru part of the filename means HTC One X (it's the codename). The codename for the HTC One XL is Evita. There's a slight chance you can recover it by trying the Evita Unbricking thread, to be honest most attempts fail at the enumerating partitions step but it's worth a shot. Sorry I don't have a link but if you Google Evita Unbricking it should come up, it has WIP in the title somewhere. It requires a Linux OS, a virtual Linux setup should do the trick. If that doesn't work you'll need to get a jtag repair done (about $60 USD).

Thank you for all your help, I'll try the first method and if all else fails I might just let go of the phone...
Hoping for the best.
If you don't want to have it repaired, you can sell it for parts (screen, speakers etc) and at least recoup a little bit a cash out of it.

The fix semi worked. It's now rebooting constantly at the HTC white screen.

Hey guys.....
I tried flashing IceColdJelly on my HTC One X ATT and i was rushing and i just remembered a notice before i rebooted the phone that it says there was no OS something something to this rom and i clicked OK and it attempted to reboot. Now its not turning on at all. Cannot get into download mode or ANYTHING. Don't tell me to try pressing any more buttons because i've been doing that for the past 3 hours. I know my way around phones and this is my biggest problem i've ever faced. I put in the phone to the computer and it recognizes it but has 3 beeps after basically cannot do anything to the phone. I have TWRP recovery on it btw. Basically, its a paperweight. Cannot turn on a single freaking thing. Please help. I cannot thank you guys enough if you can help in any way....
Thanks.

Taking the time to research before flashing a ROM that is not even meant for your phone would have saved a lot of heartache:

I thought the ICJ Bricking Crew was no more. I guess those clowns are trying to make a comeback.

I have downgraded using JET from 1.14 to 2.20. Process includes bricking your phone to get into special recovery mode that give RW access to hboot, but you do need TWRP at some point I think (not sure though) to get in bricked, before you start downgrade, so you might not be able to downgrade.
However, I don't think you are SOL. Look into manual steps of downgrading here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32761598&postcount=107
OP gives you there way to verify that device is connected and part of the steps is listing partitions. If you can get partitions listed on your PC, then I think you can just dd system image and it should come back to life... also have you tried 2.20 RUU? I had a corrupted system partition (bad sector causing reboot when I would try to access system - including booting phone or into twrp recovery). I ended up using RUU (which also failed from the same bug, but It actually reformatted my system partition giving me access to twrp and then I was able to restore).

This method will not work because he's corrupted his extended partition table. All that's left is the write-protected hboot, which the processor can't find because the partition table is gone. So he can't boot into recovery.
People have been working on this issue for a long time and there is currently no solution if you're on 2.20.
To the OP, where did you get a copy of ICJ? The latest version is supposed to contain asserts to prevent flashing on this phone. You can get this repaired by HTC for $150 or something. Or, if your ethics allow it, people have played dumb and gotten warranty replacements.
Next time don't go rooting and romming the day you get your phone.

If there is no ROM loaded onto the phone, as in doing a full /system wipe, the asserts will not work.
The assert that's being flashed looks at the build.prop that's already loaded onto the phone.

And of course, it's good practice to wipe /system when changing roms. I didn't think of that. That's obviously why people are still getting in trouble.

I don't ever wipe /system when flashing ROMs. It gets wiped when you flash anyway. I always wipe user data (factor reset), Dalvik and cache. But that's it.

Yep, if you format /system, the build.prop is gone, and the assert looks to the build.prop.. why it flashes, I don't know.
The way its set up seems like it would only flash if "ro.device=endeavoru" or whatever the line is, is present. I guess there is no fail safe to stop the process if the build.prop isn't present
Yeah, i'll skip the playing dumb idea. I prefer just going straight up to HTC about this. Would i be able to call in to HTC and ask them how much it costs? That is, if they accept these kinds of repairs.

They can fix any software corruption they have the tools too they know their phones front to back and can rewrite anything to them...just tell them what happened and they'll tell you the cost( maybe they'll feel bad and give a nice price) honesty can get you in good places sometimes
Thanks. Will send everyone who replied a thank button. Regardless of what type of comment...... I'll need to check the cost. Hopefully its below 100....
Ladies and Gents,
I made sure I chose the correct RUU based on my CID (CWS__001)
I relocked my phone and attempted to install "RUU_EVITA_UL_JB_45_S_Cingular_US_3.18.502.6_Radio_ 0.24p.32.09.06_10.130.32.34_release_signed.exe". After the RUU finished my phone seems to be hard bricked.
Won't Boot.
No power lights.
I knew this could happen when flashing an international version. AFTER getting owned I also found this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2181929. Which was blatantly in the beginning of the forum. Has anyone found a fix for this issue, or is my only option JTAG repair?
Thanks,

You could take your phone back and tell them it won't boot etc.
If you can't get it to boot neither can they, so no-one will know it's been unlocked/rooted.
Some people will say this is fraudulent, but hey, if you can live with yourself who cares what anyone else thinks?
Pft I returned mine to Telus when the same thing happened to me. The way I see it, it was HTC's RUU that bricked my phone, not me. Like you, I did not have supercid and was S-ON.
You could try the unbrick Evita thread. If you make it past step 3 you can save your phone.
You'll need to boot to Linux.

Just curious about your situation. Did the kernel flash successfully and then just not boot? What ROM were you flashing it over? Tons of people, myself included, have flashed that kernel without issue so I'm interested in what exactly happened.

Sure, I too have used their kernels and have never had an issue until this time. So I started to install the kernel and it froze at I believe 60%? Then it sat... It said the flash could take awhile so to just wait so I did... For 2 hours. I knew something wasn't right because no elemental flash has taken my phone longer than a few minutes before this one so without thinking i'd hurt anything I held the buttons to hard power off the phone. After it shut off it's been completely dead since. No charge lights, no sign of any life at all other then the QHSUSB_DLOAD under device manager when plugged into my PC. the rom that I had flashed was the latest cleanrom. super bummed but i'll get over it. the worst part about this was I had pics of my kids that I had not backed up that are now lost.

That does suck about the pictures. That would upset me more than the phone as well. I went and looked at the thread after I saw your post and saw a couple of other bricks aside from yours in the last couple of hundred posts. Very unfortunate that flashing a kernel bricked it. I try to stay away from anything that uses the Aroma Installer unless there are no other options, not saying that was the problem, but I've had numerous issues with it previously. After seeing multiple bricks from a basic kernel flash I'm going to definitely be more cautious about what I flash from now on. I'd be totally screwed if I bricked this phone. Anyway, hope you end up with something better out of this, like the HTC One.

Funny thing about the One... I was thinking about getting it but after this issue I will never look at another phone that doesn't have a removable sd card...
I think a key thing to note here is that you are flashing software that has been altered by someone you don't know and you can never be sure that things will work out. There's huge risks associated with rooting/unlocking your phone. If there wasn't HTC would warrant your phone regardless of what you do.
If you don't have an answer to the question "What will I do when I brick my phone?" don't root. Whenever modding anything, consoles, phones, set top boxes, I always assume that I will render it unusable. If that doesn't sit well with me, I don't modify it. That should be the general rule of thumb to follow.

I messed up bad. :crying: I have some idea what I'm doing but I just made a terrible mistake. I was running Viperxl with exernalx kernel and I wanted to try cyanogenmod 10.1. I had a back up of the factory version that was rooted and a back up of viperxl/externalx. I tried flashing the cyanogenmod rom and it was stuck in the loading screen. So I rebooted back into recovery then tried to flash the rooted factory backup I had. Same thing. It was stuck in the loading screen. Here's where I went wrong. I rebooted back into bootloader and tried factory reset without really knowing what it did. Now I have no back up. When I try to mount the sd card my computer says it has to format it first. And to format it, my computer has to clear it. And luckily I didn't just go for that. Any idea of what to do next? I'm stuck lol. Thanks for the help
Edit: Ok it's not really an sd card. All I can describe is it says drive G: and it has 10gb of internal storage(but it it has 16gb total it just says it will wipe about 10gb storage, can someone explain?) that I would have to all wipe out to format. I thought you would just call it an internal sd card but I don't think that's right. I just don't want to wipe anything important

You corrupted sd card doing factory reset from bootloader.. don't ever do that on this phone. After formatting on pc copy Rom to sd and flash. If your on hboot 1.14 or higher you need to flash boot.img from rom.zip you installed. Unless your s-off

Yeah I learned that the hard way lol. I usually check before doing stuff like that but... no excuse, I just went stupid. I thought it would be bad to format the disk since it wipes everything off? Is the important software on the other drive and not the 10gb sd card? Noob question but I just want to make sure before I make this irreversible
Edit: Ok I put more thought into this and I don't think you would call it an sd card. Just internal storage. But I see you have the same phone so I hope your advice is good. I just need to be reassured before doing anything else

I can't mount the sd card though since I factory reset it. Unless I format it on my computer and doing that will wipe everything off. And I'm not sure how that will turn out. So until then I'll keep searching around or hopefully get an answer. Person above said to format it but I'm just not sure yet and would hate to brick it. I'm kinda new to this so forgive my noobish questions on this stupid mistake

And chances are, since you've corrupted the memory, the data will be gone anyway unfortunately.

Just format it... If your that concerned you shouldn't be messing with the phone.. look at it this way it's corrupted and won't boot... No choice anymore..
You should read read read before doing stuff like this... It's easy to brick these phones. When I root and modify phones I'm prepared for something to screw up. But I personally spent days learning what to do before I started..

Thanks for the quick reply! That's what I thought. I just scared myself away from doing anything else. I don't always f up but when I do, I f up real bad lol. Most profound way to learn imo. And not to jack my own thread but can you run elementalx 6.7 with cyanogenmod 10.1? Can't seem to find answer and I'm not familiar enough with this stuff yet(obviously)
No you absolutely cannot use elemental kernel with aosp based ROMs. It's only for use with sense ROMs. It probably says that in the OP of the kernel thread. You really need to do some reading.

Didn't see this till now. Is it that easy? I thought it took something more technical and risky than this. I read into this for two days straight before doing anything and everything went smooth. And I did back it up. Not sure what went wrong there when trying to flash it because it worked earlier. There's just a few things I'm not too familiar with like the factory reset. And for some reason I tried it assuming it just reset it back to how it came out of the factory. It's all a learning process
I guess you leaned the hard way huh, just remember never to factory reset in bootloader again, only in recovery. And do some more reading, your question about elemental kernel would have answered itself if you took the time to read properly.

Ok that makes sense. Idk why I didnt just check the kernel thread. I was just being lazy. Well.. you're definitely right. I got plenty of reading to do. I just always over analyze things and search stuff too specific which makes asking these questions on threads easier
There's nothing wrong with asking questions. But usually the same question has been asked and answered before, so be sure to search effectively first, it's part of xda rules.
Sent from my Evita
Yeah I understand that lol. I thought about that before asking. I was mostly just wondering if it was ok to wipe the memory to format it. And I explained everything just to check and make sure there was nothing else that could be done. Which I probably could've found the answers myself but it's a bit overwhelming making these mistakes without knowing what to do. Just want to cry out for help. Things always look so much easier retrospectively lol. And they usually are too
All in all I think you did the right thing, you have the right information we need to tackle the problem. You'll find xda to be a great place, it's full of like minded people that are willing to lend a hand when the **** hits the fan.

After getting the last week's CyanogenMod onto my at&t one x, my USB mass storage doesn't work. All that happens is I click "turn on mass storage" but it doesn't show up on the computer in a drive nor logging in usb storage.
My drivers are up to date. And I flashed a newer cm but it hasn't changed...
Please help
It's more likely to be your pc than your phone that's causing the issue. Also, sometimes it takes a minute for it to come up and lastly, if you want to be certain.
Make sure you're using twrp 2.3.3.1 or under or 2.6. All versions in between have issues wiping.
Check the md5 of your rom zip file to make sure there was no corruption.
Lastly make sure to do at least a factory reset though wiping system doesn't hurt either.
If you've done all that and you're still having issues try another usb cord and usb port.

Thanks so much. I'm waiting to get back home to see if this works. Should I reinstall HTC drivers?
Uninstall any HTC drivers and software and install the latest HTC sync just in case.

Nope. nothing is working. i think its time to figure out AirDroid...I wonder if its the 3.4 kernel issue though?
No or way more people would have the issue than just u.
Did you factory reset in bootloader at some point?

Yeah I did. Speaking of kernels, what are some compatable kernels for cm Evita?

you corrupted your sd card by doing so. you will need to reformat your sd card. as far as custom kernels the "search" function is your friend
I wouldn't trust any custom 3.4 kernels just yet if that's what you mean. It's still in beta and has weird issues so any modifications made could intensify instability and even cause permanent damage.

hold your horses...your phone still turns on right ? so you should still able to get into recovery ?? if so you're far from a hard brick.

Nope...Unable to either...but lets suppose I was able to be in recovery, what would do I do if my entire storage is deleted? If it doesn't connect to the computer?

When you say storage people assume you mean the SD card storage.
If your phone is just black screen but gets detected from your PC as QHSUSB_DLOAD then the emmc partition table might be wiped. The only way to know for sure is to try and enumerate your partitions as in the unbrick evita thread. If you don't get a bunch of partitions then the partition table is gone and only JTAGG or motherboard replacement will work.

It doesn't get detected by PC at all. I tried adb device searching it thorough my terminal, but it just waits for device and doesn't charge either.

I would try the unbrick evita thread if I were you just to see. If the PC doesn't detect it at all. It's likely a power issue or the board is physically dead. But that's rare.

The battery is unfortunately dead so it won't power on at all. No worries though, since a replacement is arriving soon. I don't want to run into this again, so I'll take a read through it
I can confirm this issue, and I have CM10 (Android 4.1.2).
When I go to Settings > Storage > Menu: Computer connection, the Mass storage is checked, but if I want to change, the Settings will crash (Unfortunately, the Settings has been stopped.)
If you know any workaround, how to use that, please inform me!
Ps. What about the developer options? Couldn't the USB debugging cause this issue?
Try a newer build and completely delete and reinstall your HTC drivers. USB debugging wouldn't be a problem because that's only used for ADB instead of Mass storage
Edit: you know, the CM thread would be better next time, or even a new thread. We opened up a 4.5 month old thread.

Yeah, it works, thank you... Windows sucks...
Hi All!
Recently i flashed TWRP and Cynogenmod 10.2.1 stable to my HTC Telestra One XL (evita)
I unlocked boot-loader
I successfully rooted
But I shut down once, and when i tried to boot, it got stuck in a boot-loop
Upon many retries, it suddenly wont turn on
when I charge it it only has a flashing red light but it wont even turn on, no screen not buttons; nothing!
And if I plug it in to my PC, the pc keeps sounding the USB Connected sound multiple times over a short period of 30 seconds to 2 minutes and then it gives off multiple shaky beeps
I hope this is enough info to let anyone help out!
Thank You in Advance
EDIT:
when connected to a pc it shows drivers is ready to use but tries to install QHUSB_DLOAD but fails and latest RUU does not detect
Thx again
What is the exact full filename of the ROM zip that you flashed? When a device is showing up as QHSUSB_DLOAD in Windows it usually means it's bricked.

a friend of mine tried to flash a file named "cm-10.0.0-evita" and it gave off a message saying that this phone is not rooted or missing supersu/ something along those lines
before that he wiped sd card (whole thing)...
and then it went off from there
NOTE: its a phone with mess with, but still want to fix even though its just a side phone we barely use....help appreciated
So does it power on at all?

How did he try to flash it -_- these vague responses make it very hard to help. Bottom line is you can try pressing and holding power until the light goes off and then power and volume down to get the bootloader up, if that doesn't work you can try the evita jet tool to try to unbrick it. Bricks such as yours are not recoverable 9 times out of 10.
It looks like your only option is to get a jtag repair done. I wouldn't bother trying to do it yourself unless you're a fully experienced electronic engineer or the like. I'm not sure how many jtag repairers there are in Australia but I'm guessing Google should be able to reveal that information. Howdy from Melbourne.

he placed the cyanogen mod on the phones sd card, then he wiped sd card, after that he used the install function on twrp it gave him a message that his phone is not rooted and if he would like to root it, he accepted, then it rebooted into twrp, and he tried again to install, same message appeared and then he gave up and shut it down...(sorry for vague terms, please bear with me, still trying to learn the ropes of talking on this forum)
I gotta say, this is all very odd :/ How did he install anything if he wiped the SD card after copying it over? :/ hmmmm In any case, you CAN try he jet tool as per my last post before getting a jtag. You'll need a linux install or Bootable USB stick/CD/DVD though.
My guess is that the only thing he installed was SuperSU. That'd be why it booted straight back into TWRP.

and yeah.. it sounds weird to me too but i mainly play around with stuff like the galaxy series samsung's so the htc stuff is still new...and i have to admit...i am hating it so far.... but still experience cant hurt
Hi guys!
im back
I JTAG'd the phone overseas, and it came back, surely enough, working, but now another problem arises,
the guy apparently unlocked the bootloader, S-Off, and installed CM with android 4.3.1. the phone boots, everything is well, but for times from 10 seconds to minutes of usage it just turns off, the Hboot shows
***tampered***
***relocked***
any idea wth is wrong with it now?
it does not reboot from power menu, and does not do anything really since I cant keep it on for more than a few minutes at most. I cannot keep it on long enough to unlock the bootlaoder anymore, and I cannot boot into TWRP (as the guy told me he put it on)
da hell do I Do now? any help appreciated

There's only one way to run an RUU, and that's to connect your phone and initiate the program in Windows. You're s-off so all security checks are disabled.
