Hey guys, I started with aokp (4.2) then moved to jelly 'beans' (4.1) and used Titanium Backup. But when I restored all my things my folders were all messed up because I moved from 4.2 to a 4.1 (I think someone mentioned multi-users or something). But anyways, I'm planning to move to P.A.C rom which is on 4.3, what should I do in order to stop duplicates and other problems that may arise?

Whenever switching between a touchwiz rom and aosp rom, you should always format SD card along with your flashing procedure to prevent duplicate folders from forming. This is due to the way files are stored in 4.3 vs 4.1.
That being said, I would move any important files off your SD card. Then in recovery for flashing a new rom you should factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, format system, format internal SD card, flash rom. Put stuff you want back in the default folders created.

I understand the basics of modding...i currently have an AT&T skyrocket running the SKY ICE Rom. I've ran a ROM backup via Rom Manager. My question is, if i want to try a new ROM then i would run a backup right before installing a new ROM. then go through the same process as when installing the first ROM (wiping data/cache) right? Wont this delete my backups? Or what exact data is it wiping when you do it? and is it safe to have an external SD card in the phone when doing the wipe? I dont want to lose any information on my sd card and its always worried me so i take it out. thanks for any help
When you install a new rom there is no need to back up again if you already have made a back up recently (if it is a old back up then make a new back up and if not required delete the older back up as they consume a lot of space). Regarding the loss of SD card data, you need not worry only the data on phones internal memory gets erased.the back up which you make on rom manager is safe as it is stored on your SD card.hence, there is no need to take out your SD card when installing a new rom.

so doing a rom backup doesn't backup all your current apps and settings? i hate losing my aCar info and my plants vs zombies saves. when i did my first nandroid backup (before i flashed my current ROM) i had my SD card out i believe. and when i did the wipe through CWM it didn't completely wipe the phone out. i believe all the folders where still located on the phone.
i just want to backup my phone to the way it is currently and try out some new ROMs to see if i like one better and be able to go back to this one if i decide i dont like the new ones. i know that i can back up all my apps and user data with titanium backup and reinstall apps and such to a new rom if i choose to stay with it.
thanks

this is a good explanation. I did a data/cache wipe, but was wondering what stayed, and what goes away. I just updated to Franco's kernel (I'm using 4.0.4 ICS) and tried to get back to the stock kernel. well. I failed.
I flashed a 4.2 ROM. PA 3.10 to be exact. And it did the thing with the 0 and legacy folders it needed to do for the multi-user feature. I didn't like it and I'm back on 4.1. My ROM is really confused because the folder structure is still on 4.2. Anyway to get the folder directory back to normal 4.1?
I thought I put this in Q&A, I do apologize. If a mod comes along could you move it?

I recently went through the same thing. There may be a better way, but I formatted the Internal SD card through TWRP and then ran my backup app restore and everything is back to normal. Make sure you copy anything on your Internal SD that you want to save before doing the format...

So format the internal? Do you need to reflash the ROM? Could I just restore from a back-up after the wipe?
Thanks for your reply.

I got impatient and ran it through anyway. Went off without a hitch. Thanks for your help!

No problem, glad it worked. I didn't have to change anything with the ROM I was on, I just needed to restore my apps since some of were on the Internal SD. I had also read that you could keep the Internal SD and delete the 0 folder, but I got an error every time I tried deleting it.

Hello All,
I am new at this "flashing" scene and have a few questions. Could someone please tell me exactly what steps I need to take in order for me to put a newer "Nightly" CM 10.2 on my Verizon Galaxy S3? I hate the idea of having to re-download all my apps each time I get a new ROM. One of the questions I have is exactly what is "Dalvik Cache"?
Any help would be really appreciated.
Thanks,
Bruce
I'm not sure what recovery you have installed, but i use Cwm & I backup my ROM to external sdcard. Flash the new nightly & use advanced restore option & restore data only. Its always worked for me, I just wouldn't do it going in between touch wiz & AOSP

Hi & thanks for responding! I am using the latest release of CWM. What I'm still not clear on is what steps do I need to take to flash the new Nightly?
Thanks!
Bruce
0 - make sure you've back up your IMEI.
1 - always do a nandroid backup
2- titanium backup (TiBu) to back up your apps
3- back up all your data (music, etc) onto your external SD card.
4 - going from TW to AOSP (or from one AOSP to a different one) always do a clean wipe: cache, dalvik, and factory reset.
Would not hurt to format your internal SD card either.
5 - after new ROM installation, can restore your apps with TiBu - restore apps and data. NEVER use restore system data option!!
.... Unfortunately there's no way to install a new build of ROM without having to reinstall your apps. TiBu makes it easier, but they still need to be re installed

Thank you for the info! I will give this a try once the next Nightly comes out.
I've always dirty flashed nightlies and have never had an issue.
With all due respect I would ignore everyone who has posted in this thread so far (except jbjarko's comment). Not sure if they misunderstood the question or if they just have a lot of extra time on their hands.
If you already have CM10.2 installed then all you have to do is download the newer nightly via the cmupdater app (System Settings / About Phone / CyanogenMod Updates) then after it is downloaded select it and click "update".
It's not a back idea to make a backup once in a while (i make a backup using Rom Manager about once a week), but 99.9% of the nightlies will flash just fine. AND if you ever do have a problem after flashing a new nightly just reboot into CWM recovery, wipe cache and dalvik cache, then re-flash the last working nightly.
The vast vast majority of the time you should never need to redownload a single app or reconfigure anything when going from one CM10.2 nightly to another CM10.2 nightly.
So in summary:
1. Use the built-in cmupdater to update from one nightly to the next
2. Always keep the last working nightly on your phone in case you need to flash back one version (cmupdater saves it on your internal sd card in a folder conveniently called "cmupdater")
3. Occasionally make a full backup (a nandroid) using CWM in case things really get jacked up
'Dalvik cache' can be cleared by going to "Advanced" when you are in CWM recovery

SO I went to CM and then back to touchwiz and have the /0 foulder. I have my stuff backed up and was about to format internal storage, But have a question. Do i need to factory reset or reflash my ROM after doing the reset? And will this get rid of apps as well?

Formating the internal SD will do nothing to the rom itself.
It will erase all of your app data though, like any save files you have for games and such, you'll basically be starting over clean. I would personally backup everything I wanted from the SD card, then clean install the rom with an internal storage format, then move everything I wanted back into the new folder location.

So I have been doing a lot of flashing and I wanted to clean up my phone so I did a full wipe, factory reset and then rooted, unlocked bootloader and flashed TWRP 2.6.3.Then I backed up my fresh image of Samsung Touchwiz. Then I moved my TWRP backup of my Carbon setup into the backup directory created by my initial backup.then I did a restore of that backup. Now my problem is that my directory structure is out of whack.I plug the phone into the PC and all I see is Rocket Player,Android and clockworkmod folders in that order.I can't access Music or set a custom ringtone, those directories are not found.I can no longer see the original backup either,Trying to figure out what I did wrong.Did I need to flash Carbon and Gapps first and then do a restore?I missed a step somewhere just wondering if anyone can shed any light.
Thanks.
When you cleaned house on your internal storage while on TW, everything was in /sdcard. When you flashed Carbon (AOSP JB) Jellybean moved your internal storage to /0/sdcard and everything from TW is sort of hidden from that directory now. You should be able to see it or unhide that data in /data/media, /legacy, or /emulated if you switch back to TW. Idk if you'll be able to find it while currently on AOSP, someone correct me if I'm mistaken.

Hey man thanks for the reply-I repeated the whole process, doing a complete TWRP wipe as in no OS at all, flashed back to stock, flashed a "virgin" Carbon and Gapps,THEN did my TWRP restore (After a backup of the virgin Carbon). Now everything seems to be working normally.Evernote had to reformat and Swiftkey needed to download languages again but so far so good.
Hope this helps someone in the future-couldn't find any procedures for a restore AFTER doing a Full wipe, starting over from scratch. Now I know, first flash the ROM you will be restoring.
