Stock Browser disappears - Asus Transformer TF700

Hello,
I'm on Cromi-X 5.0.4. The stock browser appears to randomly uninstall itself. I am able to restore from backup, but after my next reboot, the browser will sometimes disappear again. Has anyone else experienced this?
Kind Regards,
Julius

This is the weirdest thing I've read in a long while.....???????????? LOL
Can you elaborate?
Have you tried reflashing the rom?

Yes it is strange. After doing a clean install of Cromi 5.0.4 from 5.0.3 with Hunds kernel, I restored from backup only missing files and data without restoring system settings. I restored my Nova Launcher settings from backup and performed a cold restart. I noticed the stock browser was missing when I tried to open a link in an email. The stock browser icon was replaced by a generic Android robot icon. I looked in the app drawer and the browser app was no longer there. I restored it from Titanium back up, but after my next cold restart, the browser disappeared again. I performed another clean install of Cromi (formatting prior to installation) and once again performed restore from backup as mentioned above, but the stock browser still manages to uninstall itself. I'm not sure where or how to start trouble shooting. My apps that call for SU are:
Titanium Backup Pro
System Tuner
Greenify
Battery Doctor
Clean Master
Rom Toolbox
Lagfix Premium
I'm currently on my 3rd clean install with _That's OC Kernel. Had to restore the stock browser again from backup. Strange. Very Strange.

How about not restoring anything after you flash the rom, check if the browser is functional, restore a few apps, or your Nova settings - you get the idea: It's gotta be something happening during your restore....

When you say it disappears I bet it is still I the /system/app folder. Can you check please. Guessing I'd say the permissions isn't set correctly or your restore from tibu is messing up a signature match. Are you sure aren't restoring a system setting or allowing tibu to restore an old id?

Hi. I have just performed another clean install of the ROM. Previously when I restored from Titanium backup I would revert to previous ID, and I would not restore system files. After I noticed that the stock browser had disappeared, I found the browser.apk in the system/app folder, but I was unable to successfully run/install it.
So far my with current installation, I have not restored from Titanium back up and, I am restoring my apps from the play store one by one. So far I've not seen any problems with the stock browser disappearing. It seems that my problem may have been related to restoring from backup, but unfortunately I have not been able to arrive at a concrete root cause.
Thank you all for your suggestions. Everything is running smoothly at the moment.
Cheers,
Julius

Titanium Backup Help

I recently flashed a new rom (the last time I did this was almost 2 years ago so I forgot what to do). Titanium backup has been doing weekly updates for a long time. So when I started up the phone titanium backup is gone, I read that I must redownload from the play store, but when I run it, it says I failed to acquire root privileges. It tells me to get busy box, so I download that too, but that won't install properly.
What should I do now? Have I lost root? The bootloader is available...that means it's still rooted right? The internal sd card still shows my folder of titanium backup and all the other root folders I used to have on my phone, I just can't get titanium backup to run so i can't restore.
Thanks!

If you flash a new rom root is lost.
You have to root again.
S.R.
A few of the JB ROMS were causing issues with root. The fix was to re-flash the SU (superuser) apk and that would fix things right up. You should be able to find it doing a search.
Good luck and hope this helps!

Lets start with a few basic questions... dont mean to offend you, just wanna make sure its not something you may have overlooked.
What rom did you flash?
What, if anything, did you wioe in recovery?
Did you get a superuser or supersu prompt when titanium started?

Not necessarily so. Most custom roms are pre-rooted by the dev. Ive flashed countless roms and until recently w/ jb not had any issues w/ root access.

seems you've just lost root privileges,
just flash supeuser again and you will be fine...

it pretty much looks like this in TitBack, give or take a few letters: "[SMS/MMS/APN] Phone/Messaging...". when you tap on it, the pop-up recognizes it as "Phone/Messaging Storage". this is where your text messages are.
some 3rd-party MMS apps like GoSMS Pro can back up your messages too, and I believe there's also an app or two solely for backing up your messages to your sdcard/internal storage.
Titanium Batch restore fail
Hi all
Having a few problems, I'm new to flashing roms and the use of Titanium Backup and I've just flashed my second ROM. I've gone from CM9 to CM10. Before doing so I created a backup of apps + data.
I flashed the ROM fine, and ran the batch restore function in Titanium. I have all the icons on my homescreen from the previously installed apps but after clicking on them my phone tells me that app isn't installed. I then notice that my notification from Titanium's batch restore shows the apps I had downloaded from the play store failed to restore (the notification said that the elements failed after batch restore was complete).
I noticed that these apps have a line through them when the list of apps I want to restore appears.
Titanium then advised me that the apps did not restore as the Android ID had changed, So I then reverted to the previous android ID thinking this to be the solution. However, after running the restore function again, the same amount of elements failed to restore.
Due to my lack of knowledge in Titanium and my need for these apps, I turned to the play store and decided to manually redownload all the apps again. This does not work either! The error message I get is the apps cannot be downloaded due to an error (491). I guess this is to do with the android ID changing?
Please help, how can I get these apps to restore? and also how can I be able to download apps from the play store again? :crying:
EDIT: So I was able to reinstall the apps from the play store by wiping the dalvik + cache.
This still leaves me baffled as to why Titanium wasn't able to do this

Did you try to restore system apps? I always use tb w/ the pro key to restore user apps + data, and have been getting the changed android id lately, but whether I keep the new id or revert to the old one, my restore works. Depending on what ROM I'm going to or from, sometimes I have to change my home screen shortcuts for system apps.

I didn't select restore system apps, instead I selected restore all apps with data, failing that I tried restore missing apps + all system data.
What option should I normally be selecting to do a straight restore after flashing a ROM? Does the fact that there is a line through the apps that I'm trying to restore mean anything?
I always select "restore missing apps + data" it's the 1st option under restore in the batch menu. The apps with a line through them are the ones that tb recognizes as being backed up but not installed.

[Q] App Backup issue - Not restoring all data

I recently went from Stock JB to Scotts CleanRom 2.3 and Data2SD (Completely awesome btw). Before I wiped everything out, I did an app+data backup using the Asus App Backup program that came on the device. After I was finished flashing everything, I restored all of the apps and data from the file I made earlier. Most of the data came back without issue. However, when I fire up Bad Piggies HD, it acts like a new install and all my progress has been lost. Has anyone else tried to restore data from Bad Piggies using the built-in backup app?

I have not used the Asus app, but have you given Titanium Backup or MyBackup Root a shot? Both work very well and I've never had issues. If you have a nandroid, you can revert back, backup, and then reinstall your ROM with apps again.

Thanks for the suggestions. I normally do use Titanium Backup. However, I was not yet rooted when I made the initial backup so I used the built in app that was on the device instead.
Thanks
Rovio handles this game's data different. Unfortunately, I found this out the hard way as well...
The data is stored in
sdcard/Android/data/com.rovio.BadPiggies or com.rovio.BadPiggiesHD

Yes rovio store their data on the sdcard. There are specific programs on the market for backing up game files. Rovio = Muppets.

[Q] After the ROM Burn

I am fairly new to this but did burn the Synergy ROM to my Verizon Galaxy S3. Very nice but:
After wiping out everything (Dalvick/Factory Reset, etc.) what is the best method to get back to where I was.
I have a full Titanium backup but I am sure that I do not want it to restore everything since some things are from the VRALHE version and the new Synergy ROM is from the lastest VRBLK3 (v4.1.1) ROM.
So what is the best method to get all my programs and settings for them back into the phone? Anyone?
You can use TB for all downloaded apps. I wouldn't use it to back up system apps as it causes problems when used if different roms. I would buy mybackup pro. It will let you backup contacts sms mms phone logs dictionary and a few others. Between those 2 backups the only thing you'll have to "setup" would be your home screens if your not using nova or apex. I use apex which let's me backup my screens so I can flash a new rom and within 20 min my phone will look as it did before the new flash minus any new features the rom might have

As much as some people are changing ROMs I wondered about this. I went through TB and turned off the restore on all the system apps. Quite a pain. So now I will stop it from backing up the system apps in the first place. I am using GO and it allows me to backup the screens.
Was hoping there was some magically quick method that did it all. Guess 20 mins is best.
Thanks for the answer.

Can backup and restore all data and system apps + data. Do not restore system data. That is different from system app data.. Do not use the option to restore system data. Data to any app is fine whether it be data or system app. There is no difference between system and data apps except that system apps are not as easily deleted. All roms have the same basic system apps. If you want an app to stay in rom regardless of data reset you move it to system. Apps in system are not removed by a data reset.

Thanks for the help. I turned off backing up system apps. When doing this I noticed that TB can make a zip file of the backup. That should be sweet. Couldn't we have ROM Manager burn the ROM and then install the TB zip.
If the above would work this could make life much easier since I would not then have to install TB find the backup and then install it. Everything would already be reinstalled.

[Q] Which app to restore apps/settings after installing ROM?

I installed B145 with the kat 80b kernel and the v3 battery patch and everything looks good. I had to swipe as I was using build 81 before. Quite honestly, since I'm not running any synthetic benchmarks nor overclocking the proc, I'm hard pressed to find any difference in performance from EOS 3. Mind you, the buttery feel on this ROM (and EOS 3, for that matter) is day and night when compared to Asus's stock code. So if you're like me and waited this long to root your Transformer (I popped its cherry just a month ago, after having it for 1 year), don't be afraid to try this ROM... the best thing to have happenned to the og transformer.
One question I have is, what are you guys using to constantly restore your apps and/or settings after repeatedly flashing new ROMs? It's a pain in the neck having to reinstall all the apps and setting them up! Thank you and special thanks to Timduru and his minions This thing is awesome...

I use Titanium Backup, but I let Google install all my apps, then restore the data.
There are a few apps I have to install using Titanium (from Amazon) that I have to restore using Titanium. Those apps I have to tap the Install button and Done for each one.
I tried using the App Backup in the ROM Toolbox by Jrummy, but it did not restore all the data correctly (mainly thumb keyboard).
I also make nandroid backups using TWRP so I can quickly restore a working ROM without having to reinstall stuff if something goes south.
I also use Titanium Backup but with some reservations. If you're going to go back to the ROM you're running, you're much better off with a nandroid backup. TB is cool for a few reasons: batch backup/restore, system apps or just apps, etc... however you have to be careful with it.
- Make sure you always verify your backups (often). Never assume "they'll work", cause they most likely won't - that's a known issue that it fails to parse its own packages once in a while, so batch restores just lock up the entire operation and you have to forcibly kill it to start where it left off.
- Always keep a copy of the backups elsewhere than on the tablet
- Just because it backs up a system app or an app doesn't mean it can restore it, even on the same rom.
- Some stuff like contacts need to be exported then imported back especially if you're upgrading to another android version.
- System apps will almost always fail to install on another android version unless they were "hacked" to make them work.
So yeah it's a really good and powerful tool but to use with caution. Always redo full backups and verify them before you wipe/flash and always have a complete nandroid backup to restore in case of issues, like Frederuco said.
Edit: Once you're on Team EOS's roms, I dount think you have to do a full wipe anymore. I just wipe cache, dalvik and system, then flash the new rom, that way all my apps are still there. I only do a full reset if I experience issues after doing this, to make sure it's the rom and not apps, and to report to Tim from a fresh flash.
Thank you both. I'll give Titanium a try whenever I try another ROM. In the meantime I decided to go back to EOS3 build 81. I *really* don't like the new status bar on top. It specially bugs me when browsing the web since it's eating up screen real estate.
[Edit]
This is probably a known issue, but for those going back from EOS 4 to EOS 3: the directory /sdcard was copied to /sdcard/0 after installing EOS 4; so, when I restored EOS 3 from nandroid backup, the system wasn't responding as it should and some apps were very slow (I guess expecting to find their data under /sdcard). Copying /sdcard/0 back to /sdcard and rebooting made everything work much better. Thanks.

From what I've read this is an issue with CWM. I saw frederuco mention it on the EOS 4 thread.
I had the same problem, went from build 92 to preview 145 and Titanium Backup couldn't find anything. I was pulling my hair out until I saw his post
If you use TWRP 2.3.2.3 the /0 directory issue goes away.
Also, TWRP IMO is much better than any CWM to date.

Cannot update sucessfully to anything

Software version 1.46.498.1 Android 2.3.4 Sensation 4G Rooted S-off HBoot 1.18.0003
First I tried flashing some roms with Jelly bean - Things seemed to go OK then after startup screen it freezes then reboots on the "instruction screen" it reboots to the desktop and the app button will pull up icons ,then freezes and reboots. I tried some different roms in different versions of android and the exact thing keeps happening. I looked everywhere but couldn't find the answer to if I need to have the same android firmware version on my phone as the rom I was trying to flash. I tried to install 4.0 but it did the exact same thing the same way. All attempts to upgrade in any way have failed.
I have tried full wipe, wiping cache & delvin cache. I have tried not doing that & all the same. I have a nandroid backup thank goodness that I have reinstalled 20 times trying to get anything to work.
Solution found: Flashed CM 9 and the google app. No titanium backup. I installed it but no Icon.
Still trying
I put PG58IMG.zip on my SD, ran bootloader and it readsG58IMG.zip No image file
Also in pink in the top left read LOCKED is this it? I have rooted my phone.

Try to clear settings for titanium backup, uninstall it and install it again.Restart your Launcher and clear your Launcher settings if it is necessary.Check if the app is frozen or you have hide it from your Launcher.
Inform us if it helps you!
**Before you post try to reboot your device. If you had it installed on your system partition reboot into recovery and clean your dalvik-cache / It would be nice to clean your cache partition too**
I only see a couple options for the launcher and showing/not showing icons isn't one of them. It says pro key installed but can't start it. Under app management all fields are darkened except uninstall.
Funny, the unpaid version works fine.

The "Titanium Backup PRO Key" for titanium backup is a key that unlocks the free version of the application to pro version. So it is natural the "Titanium Backup PRO Key" has no data to clean! You have to install the free version first!
Hmm
I'll try that. Makes sense. I don't see yet how to "link"them
