so I got a Samsung captivate from my friend. and was planning on rooting it and either using it as a game phone. or giving it to my friend.
background :
most likely has water damage. was out in a damp area.
finicky micro USB port.
issue :
will not boot with out USB cable plugged in.
boots just fine into 2.2, with cord plugged in, already got phone rooted and everything else works fine, just that odd boot issue.
Question :
Anyone know why this could be going on, I'm thinking water damage but I remain skeptical.
Just curious what exactly you mean by it won't boot ... Like you get no response at all, or it stays on the at&t screen, or what?
yeah, when the USB cord is unplugged and I hold down the power button, it stays at a black screen.
but when the USB cord is unplugged and I hold down power, volume up and down. it flashes a battery every 5 or so seconds with a loading icon in the middle. when I remove thumb from the power button it all goes black again.
Last night I ran my battery down to the point where it said Powering Off or whatever. I charged it all night and nothing. When I plug it in, sometimes it has a red LED in the upper left for a econd or two, then does one vibrate, then becomes completely unresponsive.
I've tried a battery pull and hooking it up that way. Same thing - red LED, one vibrate, then nothing. Some times when it is plugged in, it will show a battery picture with no juice for just a second then it all goes blank again.
I am running AOKP build 4 with Slim Kernel.
HELP!!!!!!!!!
I would try another battery, sounds like the one that you have us showing up as dead even after charging overnight.

Just unplug the phone... pull the battery... put the battery back in and WITHOUT plugging the phone in turn the phone back on (may have to hold the power button for a little while).
Strange plugging in the phone without a battery should bring up the charging screen with a question mark in it I think
So the problem has been remedied, though I would like a little input to better document this problem and solution...
I took the battery out, plugged the phone in, then popped the battery in. Really quickly, I got it to enter the weird screen where it is an exclamation point in a yield sign (I forget what combination of buttons I pushed to get here). It said Volume up to continue or Volume down to do something else. This is where it was fuzzy because I was freaking out about having to buy another phone.
Anyways, I hit the volume button that was supposed to reboot and it went through the boot sequence and showed me charging at 98%. This is strange because it was plugged in all night but non-responsive - not power, no heat, no nothing.
So long story short, if running this ROM/Kernel combo - DO NOT LET THIS THING GO TO 0%!!!
And if anyone can tell me what combo I pressed to enter that screen, it would be very helpful. Thanks guys!
The screen you got to is called Download Mode..
Download Mode - This is a setting in which you will put your phone when using Odin. There are other ways, but most people will reach download mode by powering down, removing the battery, and holding volume down while plugging the factory usb cord into the computer and phone. Odin can only communicate properly with your phone if the phone is in download mode.
For future reference you have to
1. hold volume down + power + home button
2. Per on screen instructions, press volume down to reboot/restart device.
This is a documented problem and one that has been posted about numerous times, glad you figured it out. Also, this will always fix the problem so you should not worry if the phone running this ROM/Kernel combo runs down to 0%.
too bad samsung doesn't have a genius bar.....lol

i know this might be a dumb question, but have you tried pressing volum up+volume down+power together when you're turning it on? does it do anything when you do that? have you tried booting into recovery?
oohhh always last thing, are you using the power adapter that came with the xyboard to charge it? because if you are using just USB cable to PC it wont power up, also, if you are not using the designated charger, i can tell you first hand that it will take about an hour of charging before you can power it up since its not the right voltage i.e, a phone charger, i use my Samsung Galaxy tab 3's charger to charge this beast and it works well, but yes if the battery died, the thing wont power up for like an hour, try this.. unplgu it from the charger, press the power button, if u see the red light blink next to the camera, then its just a dead battery, you should be ok, if you dont see nothing then you might have an issue, but i can tell you this, if you had an error flashing or bricked it, when you try to power it up if it has battery life, the screen will light up, but just stay black, but if its not lighting up, chances are its dead and just needs to be charged
@masterse7ven first of all thanks for the reply. I am using power adapter which is not meant for the xyboard but when tried to connect power adapter my xyboard shows white light @ bottom & red at top next to camera. & it used to blink red light 3 times when i tried to power up. Now after an hour or so No light when connected to power adapter & no blink while trying to turn thing on. I tried vol down + up + power button But still no response I think its the charger heck I think remaining battery power is also drained ??????? I will buy a new charger again. & reply the results...
Hi,
I have a Droid Maxx, it was in a case and got dropped on the corner, anyway it will only turn on when It's plugged in (wall or computer) but can't get past the yellow Motorola / Droid start up screen. It just keeps just rebooting.
Is there anything I can do to wipe it or extract some data off?
Thanks!
Have you tried getting into fastboot? Hold down the power button and volume down for 5 seconds and release (when phone is off). If you can you can try an fxz save data and see if it resets. To be honest I think your screwed sounds like internal damage which is why it only turns on when plug in.
Im getting this problem with my Xoom (Everest/Xoom 3G), it wont power up unless it is plugged up to the power cable.
Once its booted up it wakes from sleep with out the power cable fine, but just that it wont startup from cold boot.
It has a CM11 4.4.4 rom, with twrp and rooted.
Ive opened it up and disconnected/reconnected everything such as battery, power button etc. Ive put a volt meter on the battery and get about 8volts.
I have tried to hold down the power button for 30secs+, even using combinations with the volume buttons, but wont come to life unless i plug in the power cable.
The tablet works fine and battery life is decent for its age, gets about 3-4hours+ screen on time.
Anyone have any idears on how to fix this?
