[q] a question about kernels and roms - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I got a verizon phone sch-I535 and I just wanted to know if i want to install a kernel, do i need to install a rom first?
I want to install boeffla kernel on my phone, but some people are saying i can't install it on my phone. Is this true?

Do you have a Verizon s3? That kernel will brick the phone because it think that's for the international version. You can only flash files that are meant for the phone.
However, a kernel can be flashed without a custom ROM.

2.20, Unlocked Bootloader. Now what?

Alright, I just flashed 2.20 OTA and I was able to unlock the bootloader using the .bin I got from HTC when I was still on 1.85. I'd like to get root. Do I absolutely have to flash a custom recovery and then SuperSU, or is there another way? Essentially all I want root for is to disable some of the bloatware and install a tether, I'd rather not have the custom recovery as I don't intend to install custom ROM's. I've been through that with my old G1 and my Epic 4G, both of which needed all the help they could get. Whereas I'm pretty happy with the One X and Sense, and not really looking to run custom kernels and/or ROM's this time around.
Thanks - Derrick
It's the only way. Nobody said you had to install a custom rom. You need the recovery to push the root package.

[Q] How do I update android on my rooted Moto G?

Every time I download the 4.4.2 update through the phone's menu, it gives me an Error while it is installing and the phone just reboots. I'm guessing it's because the phone is rooted.
What do I do? Phone is a European model if it matters.
I have the same problem.
Any suggestions?
I dont think it makes any difference if its rooted, have u installed a different recovery or kernel? I know u need stock rom, recovery and kernel or it'll bootloop, this happened to me

The solution that I'm aware of...
Hi there, as far as I know, the only way to be able to update the firmware is by unrooting the phone,
flash the stock ROM, install the update, then re-root it. I know it's a hassle, but otherwise you won't be able to unless you use a custom ROM. Hope that helps!
You need the original recovery

You need stock recovery.
The KitKat installation script also checks each file that it updates. If a file is found to differ from the stock file then the update fails.
So if you are rooted then at least one file is different from stock. Basically you need to unroot or flash stock before you can update.
Unrooting may still not allow you to update if the unroot process leaves any files different from stock. Best bet is to flash stock ROM then update.

Download voodoo ota root keeper and use that
Will bear the above in mind, thanks.

[Q] anybody ever figure out the "System Software not authorized" problem?

I have the SCH-I535 and I took the OTA and I'm running 4.3 with a locked bootloader. I've downloaded safestrap and have successfully got a recovery and even flashed the Alliance Rom and used it for over a month. I decided to switch over and try the M.O.A.R rom and everything seemed to go smoothly. I flashed the appropriate modem that the download instructions told me to use and then flashed the rom, all after doing a clean wipe first of course. But after I rebooted I now have the dreaded System software not authorized message. Has anybody figured out how to fix this without going back to stock unrooted?
Which modem did you flash? Because there's a two fold problem that you're likely facing:
a) you flashed the Sprint modem that is mentioned in the MOAR OP, cuz the rom is a port from Sprint. If you did this, you may have semi-hard bricked your S3.
b) you flashed the Verizon modem, which you aren't supposed to do with a locked bootloader.
Being on the 4.3 OTA, literally the only things you should be concerned with flashing are TouchWiz roms and also kernel modules which enable WiFi.
You're going to need Odin flash VRUCML1 if you cannot access the rom or Safestrap.

Is there a stock verizon 4.4.2 rom for unlocked bootloaders?

Want to update a family members phone to 4.4.2. Has Verizon S3 with 4.3, baseband i535vrlf2, currently running cleanrom 8 core edition. Looking for a 4.4.2 stock based rom that will work with the unlocked bootloader, everything I can find requires it to be locked.

Doesn't exist because it will not boot without matching firmware and kernel. We're "limited" to custom 4.3 and older Touchwiz roms and AOSP.

Thanks. One question, If you upgrade and relock the bootloader, your only losing the option to install custom kernels unless you use a safestrap rom correct? Should still be able to root the phone with towel root or install a prerooted rom?

You lose access to everything in my previous post. Once upgraded to VRUDNE1 OTA, you cannot downgrade for any reason if you dislike how the phone performs. There is no downgrading to older roms or OTAs, you can only Safestrap flash another VRUDNE1 rom that's it. Doing anything else will brick the phone.
Yes, Towelroot will still root the phone regardless of the software OTA on our phone.

Need help with SM-S-906L "tracphone' model......how to apply a custom rom or odin

Need help with SM-S-906L "tracphone' model......how to apply a custom rom or odin
I have read more than a few have managed to flash roms onto the S6 tracfone model (sm-s906l), namely verizon based.
Does anyone definitively know what Verizon based rom or tar can be flashed onto this model and how?
I am rooted and stock on this phone, but I just want to apply virtually any Verizon based rom (custom or stock).
I have tried to ODIN a stock based VERIZON tar.md5, but it failed. (one that matches the android version)
I would be ok with installing TWRP, and flashing a verizon rom, but do not want to try that unless I know it won't brick.
Thanks for any info on how to get any verizon based running on this model
