If you are still using stock Rom, try to temporarily unroot your device and try again. If it doesn't work try unchecking USB debugging. If it still doesn't work, you'll really have to fully unroot your device to play it

Not if the app is set to detect root. Then you will have to unroot every time you want to play. More and more apps are using this method.

Yea it's possible some times by an app or via recovery by flashing a zip (mostly Samsung phones)
