I recently purchased the Samsung Media Dock for my Galaxy S4 i9505
All works well and I love it, apart from a few small niggles.
The dock only displays in 720p, as it was originally used for the Note II, so the resolution output is not Full HD, like it should be with our S4's natively supporting 1080p.
Also, the 720p output is not quite the correct aspect ratio, I have tried it on both of my TV's (Samsung 32" and Panasonic 42") and it cuts off a bit of the sides and top/bottom of the output.
Wanting to know if maybe Samsung will release an update to the software on the phone side to be able to display the correct resolution and ratio, or if it is a hardware issue on the dock side.
If anyone has any advice or knowledge on this, help would be greatly appreciated.

I want to get this tablet mainly for movies & youtube. I know the screen is only 800p, but I have a slow Internet connection so I only tend to watch 720p videos anyway.
How good do youtube and movies look on this display with regards to black level and colours.

This review pretty much sums it up...
"The Note 10.1's display was both a disappointment and a surprise. The display carries a resolution of 1280 by 800 pixels, the same as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and the Toshiba Excite 10.1. That means no high-pixel density clarity or detail on text or graphics, as you'd find on the Acer Iconia Tab A700, Apple iPad, and Asus Transformer Pad Infinity TF700.
However, Samsung has clearly done something with this tablet to boost its display performance. The sharpness and color of images is dramatically better than the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, and my high-resolution images in the Google Gallery had sharpness and detail that came close to what you'd find on the high-pixel density displays. (Another observation: Android tablets typically struggle with skin tones, but the Note 10.1 produced some of the most realistic skin tones I've seen.) Text clarity was better than than on the abysmal Galaxy Tab 2, but it couldn't hold a candle to what you'd get on any of the high-pixel density displays."
I think it's awesome in my opinion. I live the dual speakers having forward. It's now my go to to watch series on in bed.

I thunk this tablet may have the best 1280x800 HD displays out there. REMEMBER. 720P is HD also The display combined with great stereo speakers make this an excellent tablet for media consumption and viewing/listening.
I watch a lot of movies on it. I really don't have an issue with the screen and the sound is impressive.

If you've watched 1080p videos and 720p for example a 15 inch laptop I'd say that you didn't see almost any difference. Of course the screen resolution itself is more important than the videos resolution, but then think about the size, which is minus 5 inches of that laptops screen I find this tablets screen very good. Sometimes I have to zoom webpages but that's only when using splitscreen. So yes it's verygood, but it could be better of course

The screen is accurately calibrated according to "Display Tester" by gombosdev (free in the Play Store). I have no tablet or phone (LCD or AMOLED) that can pass all of the app's gamma tests -- except the 10.1 Note (with latest update).
I was really confused when I wanted to buy a tablet. I was confused between both the New iPad and the Samsung Note 10.1
I was a big Apple fan until I got my hands on this amazing, inspiring, incredible, and lovely Note.
It is seriously one of the best devices I ever had.
Web browsing, youtube videos, movies, gaming, studies, and so much more! "I was actually watching SuperNatural's new episode on my Note10.1 today."

So I recently bought an S3, along with a samsung MHL HDMI adapter. One of my intended uses for the phone was to watch netflix on my TV, since my laptop broke a few weeks ago.
Anyways, the MHL adapter seems to work great for everything.. EXCEPT netflix. Videos are horizontally letterboxed, looks like a square aspect ratio. And more importantly, subtitles do not show up. I watch a lot of foreign films so this is a deal-breaker. On the phone itself, everything looks perfect, widescreen and with subtitles, but somehow the MHL adapter messes everything up on the way to the TV.
I tried googling and I only found one solution, to disable hardware overlay in developer settings, but that didn't work for me.
Also, the video doesn't look very good at all, both the resolution and compression quality looks pretty ****. Is netflix not streaming in HD on android?
Does anyone know any fixes for these problems?
Hi, I have a Sony Bravia W6 42" and I was thinking that if I buy a MHL cable for the S4, then I will be able to connect the phone to the TV and will be able to watch movies in full screen, those 1920x800 resolution ones which are normally can't watch in full screen, without those disgusting black bars!
My question is, what about quality? Will the picture quality degrade if I watch via MHL, than watching through a PHD or a Pen drive?
If someone has already experience in this matter kindly input here.

I've used MHL on my S4 and my LG3DTV so I'll leave my first impressions. I'll try it again tonight to just be absolutely concrete but here's my immediate thougths.
1.) You need to make sure your MHL adapter supports the S4. There are some 5 pin ones and 11 pin ones. I have the Samsung adapter so I'm fine but make sure you get the right one.
2.) The black bars are part of the aspect ratio. Our screen is 16:9 so if your movie is 16:9 it'll fill the whole screen. Some movies use wider aspect ratios so you'll get the black bars on the top and bottom. I'll check tonight if you get the bars outputting to TV. I can't remember that.
3.) I believe there is some overscan (rather underscan) when outputting via MHL. It seems like I had a black border all the way around when I played a few games on my TV with MHL and a bluetooth controller (which is awesome by the way). Some HD games did fill the screen and was a pretty decent experience (NFSMW, A8, MC4, Osmos).
Again I'll test these out tonight and post some pics with my other phone so you can see for yourself before buying anything.

Ah finally someone replied. If I buy I will buy the original S4 MHL, that's not a worrying factor. But as you said, there's some under/over processing, hmm, that's what I was wondering! I mean if you clearly see picture quality degradation while playing via MHL in comparison to USB devices (PHD or Pen drive) then I will certainly not be interested, I will take black bars happily over a poorer picture.

picture seems to show nicely providing the res is HD (1920x1080) otherwise some pixelation (as TV and Phone is Full hd)
i get some lag when tapping the screen and overlay to pause skip video appears but when the overlay minimizes video starts again at normal speed.
sound works fine.
if phone is in portrait mode then ull have black on either side on tv .
ratio for tv 16:9 16:10 is fine
I mainly consume media on my phones, so how is the experience of netflix on the s8 plus? Without headphones is it watchable or the mono audio sound terrible?
I do not own an S8+, however, reading consumer feedback about it, the speaker is not particularly good. It is bottom facing (so already is not ideal for media playback) and not the best quality speaker in the first place.
If someone with the phone disagrees, feel free to update this post!
I also am an avid music/ video consumer. While I love the S8 models (and before them the S7's), we are poorly served by the single bottom firing speaker for this usage.
I find the speaker clear and loud enough, but if you're used to stereo front facing speakers, I'm pretty sure you're in for a disappointment if you're anything like me, depending on how much of your usage is for this particular purpose.

before my s8 I had an iphone 7 plus and before that a old nexus 6. Both much more pleasant when it comes to media consumption. When on my nexus or iphone, I watched a lot of youtube but now with the s8 no single video - all on my ipad. Even though I have a stereo speaker mod that does help a bit. Maybe it is also because of the smaller display of the s8 but all in all the full 6 inch and stereo speakers of my nexus 6 with the 2560x1440 amoled display was the best experience so far.

It's the stupid 18:9 aspect ratio the S8 has. if it was the correct ratio at 16:9 it would properly fill the screen instead of leaving massive black bars on the sides and just looking stupid. My next phone will be back to a proper 16:9 ratio (if there is anyone left making them by then!), I'm sick of this long stretched crap already, it has no use what so ever.
aside from that, the stupid speaker placement means whenever i play a game, or watch a video, my finger goes RIGHT over the entire speaker in the natural position I would hold the phone, so I have to hold it awkwardly to get any sound out of it.
yeah the 18:9 is at this time just a pain in the neck. The only "positive" thing is the smaller form factor of the 5.8" phone. But I think that this new aspect ratio is the future, so sadly this may sound.. Most of the apps and nearly all games are 16:9, this does take a loong time that every developer switches to 18:9 - just like the process of switching USB A to USB C.
I think even with the small bezels on top and bottom of the s8 would have allowed it to place dual front facing speakers. The old nexus 6 had also very small bezels on top and bottom and the speaker was just great. The fact that the galaxy`s now all have to be waterproof is also downgrading the speaker in its soundquality i think...

I've used a Samsung Galaxy S5, so far, and was pretty happy with it.
Unfortunately the screen starts to die. The lower quarter of the screen starts to flicker sometimes and I think it's just a matter of time until this gets even worse.
I'll keep using the S5 via MHL to watch Netflix on hotel TVs but for my daily use I would like to get something more modern.
A new phone would absolutely have to have:
Price below let's say 500 Euros
Headphone jack!!!
Screen of about the size of the S5 screen or slightly bigger
At least full-hd resolution
Widevine support for up to Full-HD (1080p)
Good Lineage OS support. I would like to use the stock roms as long as I get updates and switch afterwards.
No silly "notch" at the top of the screen. I've never seen a good Android implementation for this, so far.
Good screen quality. I'll use the phone to watch movies a lot! Either OLED or a good quality LCD.
Has to be available in Europe.
