Even if you put the settings manually it does not work, I had lg g2 from at&t for 2 days and it never got speeds of more then 2g with tmobile SIM card in it and manual settings.

after I used up the data limit on my t mobile 4g, does it automatically default to 2g speeds or do I need to set up another apn for the 2g?

ok, got it.
When I had my previous att phone which i unlocked and put on a t-mobile prepaid sim, I could swear it changed the boot screen from ATT's to TMO's.
On this ATT G2, I still have the ATT Bootscreen. also under Mobile Networks I still have Search for ATT Microcells. I figure this is just part of the stock ATT Rom.
What I really find weird is if I to go Network Operators and do a Search Networks it will find both TMO and ATT RATs.
Are you also experiencing this? Everything seems to work fine, including the TMO visual Voicemail app, so I don't think it is really a problem.

Which one is it? You say that it doesn't work without TMobile's APN in the first post and in the second you say it works only without Tmobile's APN.... Anyway, I know that here in Canada, Virgin Mobile uses Bell's network, and so you need to use Bell's APNs.
the problem is that it doesnt matter what apn you ad ... the phone restores back to the orighinal apn that came with the phone which is t-mobile's apn
What rom you use.
Sent via MIUI-G2X
Yah you need to root and maybe use apn back/restore see if that does the trick... If your stock then try custom rom they usually have. Simples apn built in to choose from

My wife's G2X (on Simple Mobile) had this issue on her stock ROM. Simple Mobile's Facebook page suggested installing APN Manager (free) which I did, and it worked great -- was able to delete the 'Tmobile' APN and leave only the Simple APN.. and its also backed up just in case things go wrong it will restore.
I am also going to test this out on my CM7 issue, where the APNs just disappear and work again on reboot. Maybe the APN manager will help me restore without reboot. This is with Tmobile -- no Simple Mobile even involved.
I had the same issue, and I use simple mobile. With weapon G2x ROM, whitehawkx's, it solved the issue. By default there is T-mobile's which cannot be deleted or edited. I also tried "MIUI 2.1.13 Stock w/ Trinity Kernel" which worked without any issue, just have to turn off auto selection on APN. It detected automatically the APN settings for simple mobile. Even if it is the old one(APN settings for simple mobile), it works. Simple mobile changed their settings, they made it more simple. I used this ROM for almost one day, there were no issue as I am telling, except my internal SD card, which was not available.
Try weapon G2x, see if it works for you.

Ive seen a couple thread that claim to get you up and running using a Tmobile Sim card in a Verizon Galaxy S3, none of them worked, either no data connection, dialer crashes, or no signal. I really needed to get this working, and i finally have!
Requirements:
Must have this ROM installed (This is what i used, you might try other JB ROMs) ---->http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974114
Root access after flashing JB factory image
APN Manager PRO (Must be pro)
Titanium Backup PRO (also must be pro)
Process:
Flash the Jelly Bean factory image as outlined in the link above, make sure to follow through the entire OP, phone will NOT be rooted after flashing so take care to install CWM after rooting in order to Flash SU and unlock the bootloader.
NOTICE:
At this point you can stick a Tmobile (Possibly AT&T?) sim in the phone, go to mobile networks and you should get a message saying "Switch to global?" hit OK. You should then have bars. if you dont get the "Switch to global" message click around in mobile networks, or switch it yourself (options are GSM, CDMA, or Global. Not sure if choosing GSM will work, I only confirmed Global)
Once you're all set and rooted on the JB ROM, install TBP and APN manager PRO. Using TBP convert APN Manager pro to a system app (Under backup/restore click APN manager pro and select convert to system app). Open up APN manager pro, Select Insert APN, and plug in your T-Mobile APN info which are readily available on the web (make sure to include the MMS fields if you want MMS to work) I used these:
http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1979
Restart Phone, go back to mobile networks, should get a message asking to switch to Global, hit yes. Congratulations, you now have a Verzion S3 woking with a T-Mobile SIM! At this point only Edge works, i might mess around a bit more to see if 3g/HSPA+ speeds are possible.
Credits:
Credit goes to open1your1eyes0 for the wonderful write up explaining how to flash the JB factory image.
Credit goes to lair12 for the original guide to use the S3 as a global phone, didnt work fully for alot of people but is a great starting point.

Hey MustangFTW, I'm still having trouble getting any network connection happening. Not even EDGE.

After reboot, to make sure, enable that APN by selecting it from the APN List of the APN Pro app.
Then check APN Settings under Mobile Network to make sure it is enabled, then Global. Then, have fun!
As you can see in the Screen Shot, I currently have Data and it works!
Hope we can get full 4G fix in the future, plus T-Mobile is merging towers with Verizon by the end of 2012, so hope for better connection.
EDIT----------------------------------
Add the following...
MMS proxy: 216.155.165.50
MMS seems to be working for me on the latest CM10.1 with the following APN and added MMS proxy.

---------- Post added at 06:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:47 PM ----------
I'm not sure, but I do not think this will work with CM10 or AOKP, due to that they don't have the Global Function even with the Phone Info app.
If someone has a fix for this, please tell! Thanks ;D
You can only use US Cellular phones on their network if I am not mistaken. The CDMA networks (sprint, verizon,us cell) don't allow eachother's phones on their networks.

APN: wap.tracfone
MMSC: http://mms-tf.net
MMS PROXY: mms3.tracfone.com
MMS PORT: 80

I'll keep searching about the MMS I dont think it looks good though.

Took this from Wiki
A mobile device making a data connection must be configured with an APN to present to the carrier. The carrier will then examine this identifier to determine what type of network connection should be created, for example: what IP addresses should be assigned to the wireless device, what security methods should be used, and how or if, it should be connected to some private customer network
Makes sense, the APK is needed so you device can communicate it the carrier to determine which network your phone should connect with. Still not sure what the need is, for multiple APNs, but at least I understand now what there used for exactly. The past week, I've worked again in downtown Boston, and my phone had no issues with handing off from 3G to LTE. Unfortunately I can't say the same for when I'm at home about 4 miles away. Kinda sux really. I know this isn't the topic for this thread, but I'm just hoping Sprint fixes this Spark issue soon, cause it's extremely frustrating.
Anyway, for anyone who wants a bit more info on APNs, Judy check out the Wikipedia page.

I'm on Rogers in Canada, in my case there's multiple APN on my Sim card..
I have an LTE APN and another APN for 3G I think. Everything else is the same within each APN, just the first couple lines are different. MMS doesn't work for me with the LTE APN but it works great with the 3G APN for some reason
Maybe your situation is similar?
I attached my APN list
In hangouts you're able to specify which APN you want to use, so I use LTE APN for my phone while I chose 3G APN for hangouts. The new Google messenger app doesn't allow for this unfortunately..
