Worth switching from Galaxy Nexus to GS 3? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi.
I currently have GNex on verizon. I love the phone, it's awesome but the only problem is that it has 1GB RAM and I always have less than 100MB (usually around 60MB) RAM free running CM10.
I can feel the phone stuttering to free up RAM every now and than.
I know the GS3 is a little upgrade to GNex with faster processor, better camera, SD card. But most importantly for me it has 2GB RAM.
So is it worth selling my GNex (Verizon) and buying a GS3 (Verizon)??
I think I might be able to sell it for around $100 and GS3 is approximately available for $275-320.
So is it worth it spending $200 for it?
I would be installing CM 10 on it for pure google experience.
I am 7 months away from getting an upgrade.
Thanks

Yes.
Undoubtedly.

When and to what will you upgrade from the venerable Captivate?

So I've been sitting on an upgrade since before the sgs3 came out. Have been telling myself to wait until it's under $100...Now the HOX is $99 via at&t or even $79 via Costco with free activation and bunch of accessories...color me tempted. Sure the One X has some flaws, but most agree it's solid especially at $80. Then again, what will these new Android phones go for after iPhone 5 is released? Probably a good deal cheaper, and I like value on the cheap
That being said, I can't complain about my Cappy running CM9; it's running as good now as it ever has and the ICS port is close enough to flawless for me.
Understandably, the question I ask is opinion...but curious what folks are eyeing up for their next phone. Considering I got my Cappy refurbished for $0 plus contract, I have half a mind to wait for the sgs3 to be similarly offered before I bite.
Thoughts? What at&t phone are you holding out for?

Maybe the Note 2, or next Nexus (always a ton of development on Nexus devices ) I've been waiting since May.

i dont have and upgrade till next year :/ so im really wanting to see some real monster phones come that time lol
i was so tempted to buy the sgs3 outright but im holding off
When i bought my captivate on Christmas of 2010, Wal-Mart/AT&T never took off the upgrade i used to purchase it.
So i waited until i was sufficiently bored with the captivate and something else caught my eye.
I bought the note about a month after it was released, do not regret it at all.
The hox is poop, a friend of mine abs fellow teammate sells phones, every one x he has sold in his store has been returned with an issue.
The s3 has been having problems with people losing their imei numbers after flashing a custom Rom, with no way to restore them, the old methods don't seem to work.

I have those three phones on my radar for the next upgrade. The One X was the lowest, and if you're getting information saying it's not worth the box it comes in, that's good to know.
I'm torn between the size of the Note and the additional horsepower of the S3. It looks like they've managed to get around the IMEI thing for the AT&T S3 (at least that's what my 5 minutes reading in that forum indicates), so I'm less worried about that.
I guess it will come down to the price difference at the time of upgrade.
So... there you go. Do with that what you must.
I got an Atrix 2 when it was $1 from Best Buy on black Friday. That's my main phone and daily driver, and my Cappy is my funsies phone. The Atrix 2 still has a locked boot loader (let's see if I ever buy another Motorola unless it's a Nexus) so I still use my Captivate a lot for tinkering.
My next phone? Probably an off-contract Nexus.

Something that is built for ICS and up. Something that is more bleeding-edge tech then the cappy was for it's time. So probably something not Samsung, since they are the leading brand and have nothing to prove.
-xda app, too lazy for something interesting to say-
Keeping mine.... why switch?!
Are you still using your computer from 95?
Technology has a shelf life, no matter how much you love it, it will be more than obsolete within a relatively short amount of time.
No matter how old my phone gets it will still be comparable to the newest devices in its principle purpose, to be used as a phone... Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe my dumb phone from 2005 has the comparable cellular abilities.
The reason I like this one more than my 2005, is the wifi teathering, mp3, camera, and GPS. Tablets and PC's I frequently update because I expect them to do a lot more than play music and call people. I suppose if you were in so impatient to as not wait 3 seconds for a website to load it would be worth the $500 price tag of a new phone. But I would rather be 2 years behind and use the extra $$ for something fun, like a new mountain bike or rifle.
When someone invents a modular phone system that can be upgraded like a PC, then I will buy it that day.

I'm going with either the SGSIII or Note 2. The Captivate has 512 MB ram but the SGSIII (and probably the Note 2) has 2GB! That's why android 4.1 is 'so buttery smooth!' I thought about the HTC One X but the battery is not removable, so forget it. Time to move up to buttery smooth!
Is butter related only to the ram or software also?

It's a combination of available ram, software efficiency, and processor speed. You can have the fastest processor and 1 or of 2 GB of available ram, but if the software is dis-organized, or it has illogical code, or it conflicts with the operating system, you won't have smooth operation. The Captivate on ICS is very close to its limits and JB may be the limit, depending on how the devs make their custom roms. I'm staying with CM9 RC2 until, and if, the stable version is released. Then I'll turn my Captivate into a MP3 player and wifi only browser and enjoy my stock SGSIII or Note 2.
Even on the S3 I'm not sure I'll stick with stock...maybe at least root to freeze stupid at$t bloat.
Thanks for the good input on this thread. I'm severely tempted by the $80 HOX at Costco, but keep reminding myself that S3 should get cheaper by time iPhone 5 is released in the wild. The waiting is the hardest part.

im going for the sgs3. depends on how much its going for in Feb as thats my next upgrade
its far to expensive now though. i have a feeling quad core phones are on their way to market.
I upgraded my phone about a week ago. I went from my beloved Captivate to the Galaxy S 3, and I couldnt be happier. Dont get me wrong, I loved my cappy. I flashed just about every rom that was/is available for it. But my new SGS3 is a marvel of a phone. The speed of this phone is insane. For example, when installing new apps on GS3, it only takes literally a second to install an app with a size of say 20MB. My Captivate was fast, but not that fast, but I guess thats to be expected. If you love the Galaxy S series like I do... Then its a no-brainer what to upgrade to.

I love my captivate. I've sent it to hell and back flashing constantly, soft bricking repeatedly, and dropping it occasionally, but it has remained solid, with only minor injuries. Not to mention I have a smooth, stable (for me at least) Jelly Bean ROM, and an amazing development community!
All that said, I'll run to the next Nexus device faster than a cheetah on hot asphalt.
I'm also thinking Nexus, those things get more development attention than any other device.

I was really close to getting an S3, but now that I have a REALLY fast and stable rom on my phone (helly bean), I don't feel the need to upgrade so quickly.
I'll probably wait a couple months and see what's new!

Worth the upgrade to the Galaxy Nexus? Pros and cons?

Hi guys. So I have the Nexus S and I'm kind of tempted on buying one of these Galaxy Nexus thingies. My Nexus S is only a year old, and overall it's OK on stock JB, but it can be really annoying. 3D games like Modern Combat 3 are completely unplayable and launcher redraws and system hangups occur quite often with only half a gig of RAM.
What would you do? Stay with the old Nexus and get the next model in a year or get the GNex. Where I live the thing costs roughly 380$. Do you think I could send the NS, if yes, for how much?
Thank you for your thoughts!

The Gnexus isnt exactly a gaming monster either. If you must stick to the nexus brand then I would wait for any upcoming device. The galaxy S2 and HTC one S are better gaming devices.
Also the Gnexus has a terrible speaker which is again going to be something to consider since atleast to me the speaker really matters when gaming.
If money is no object then I would go for galaxy S3.
Stay with your current device.
The only time recommend that device is when you're coming from a phone that is on contract like sprint
It would be like a iPhone 4 user upping to the 4s in August inho
the galaxy nexus isnt that good of a nexus... if you want to stick with the nexus brand wait until the end of this month, google is apparently going to reveal the next nexus in the next 30 days. if you want a gaming device go with something that has a snapdragon s4 or a tegra3... cant go wrong with these devices
The s4 ( current ones/dual core adreno 225) are not good either at gaming. Better then the nexus s and gnex yes. Myself, I wouldn't call it good though.
The new s4 on the other hand is a monster. Due to its next gen GPU.
Related to that. That is what I am looking forward to most about the next nexus. What SOC is in it. Then what screen. Audio chip, battery ,OEM in that basic order.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus question

So I'm faced with a dilemma. I just saw this article about the Samsung Galaxy Nexus for $230 for certified pre-owned without a contract: http://www.droid-life.com/2012/10/2...f-pre-owned-galaxy-nexus-229-99-off-contract/
If I get this phone and switch over my number will I still keep unlimited data?
How does the Galaxy Nexus compare with the SG3? I am eligible for a new phone next month and was planning on getting the GS3, but don't want to get rid of my unlimited data..
I am very skeptical about certified pre-owned phones and I certainly don't like buying outdated devices, even though the Galaxy Nexus is still being updated but it is kinda old.
What are you guys' thought about this?

I can attest that Verizon's CLNR QA process is pretty crappy, but since it has a year warranty, you can send it back a couple of times to get a good one if you have to.
As for the GS3...it doesn't compare. The GS3 is superior in every way other than software. Way better processor, more memory, better display. Native AOSP is the only advantage you get with the Nexus anymore. The GS3 has a very locked down bootloader, but they've done some pretty amazing things to get around it.
I'm really burned on Samsung, but between the two, I'd get the GS3, all things being equal. All things aren't equal when you can get the GNex for $230 off contract, but I'd still take a long, hard look at everything...that hardware is getting dated.

I just read a 4 page article comparing the GNex and GS3 and I was convinced that there is not too much difference between the two devices, although the GS3 clearly wins over the GNex. This is a hard choice for me because I really want the GS3, but don't want to get rid of my unlimited data, and I'm assuming that getting the GNex off contract I would still have unlimited data (I am already at 5 gigs of data and still have a week left until the cycle ends, and with a newer and better phone I'm sure I will be using more data)

Yea. Off contract would let you keep your data, and that's big points for the GNex. The biggest different in the hardware comes down to the processor. 1.2GHz to 1.5GHz isn't much, but the S4 architecture is actually so much better that the dual-core S4 matches performance with the quad-core Tegra 3 in a lot of situations. Everyday, you may not notice much different though...depends on how much you want to play graphics heavy games.

If the big difference between the processor is being able to play graphics heavy games then that won't make me want to get the GS3 over the GNex, since I barely play games on my phone. I would download a game, play it once, then delete it lol.. Pretty much what I'm looking for is something better than the Charge that is still being developed, which the GNex is since it got 4.1 not too long ago, that is faster and has better performance, and I would be able to keep unlimited data. I don't really see much a difference between the GNex and the GS3 for what I would be using it for every day
Sandman, in a similar situation as you and was toying between the two. Looking around and talking with folks who've had both; yeah s3 has better specs (more ram, faster processor, better camera) but the gnex runs really well on jb. Really what it came down to was bells and whistles. Cool features though; tilt to zoom, smart alert where it vibrates when you touch your phone to alert you of missed call/message, slide your palm over the screen to take a screen shot, just put phone up to your ear to to call if your in a specific contact, etc. There's bells and whistles but also battery life, the gnex just burns it up. I'm undecided but will probably end up with the s3. Just my $.02

Thanks for your input. All the bells and whistles that you mentioned are things that I most likely will never use. And as far as battery is concerned that's not an issue to me cuz I have chargers everywhere (home, car, school, work). And getting this will not effect my contract so I can have it for a while and upgrade whenever I want. I finally decided I'm gonna order the Gnex when I get home tonight!
Sent from my SCH-I510
Yeah I hear ya. I think the gnex will still hang out for a while despite the age...and like you said if you want to upgrade later you'll still have that option without waiting 2 years..if you truly use that much data you might be best off with off contract.

This isn't some fable

Even a year later it's hard to justify getting a new phone

http://www.phonearena.com/phones/compare/LG-Nexus-4,Samsung-Galaxy-S-II-Skyrocket/phones/7531,6515
Do you have any plans on getting a new phone? What might you get?
Even though I ask two questions I still feel like the post is more of a statement
Still happy with my SR and really haven't seen anything better come along, yet.
Nexus 4 just seems to fall short. Yes it has better screen res (I have no complaints with SR display) but to me having LTE and external sd card outweigh the benefits of 2GB ram and quad core in the Nexus 4.
Now if a Nexus 4 32GB w/ LTE comes along I might pounce...
Oh, and we'll have a CM10 4.2 build in about a week.
Well AT&T upgraded me to the GS 3, because my SR kept having some issues. (Randomly rebooting itself during a call.)
So it sits on my desk waiting to get sent back to Samsung, but now the S III on the other hand I am liking quite a bit, and unless some one comes out with something that would at least Double what I currently have, then I am perfectly happy with my S III. Albeit I was quite happy with the SR as well, just the minor frustration of it rebooting itself every now and then. It was stock, just rooted and de bloated.
Note 2. cant wait
S3 is fantastic. I miss my SR though. The Nexus 4 looks decent, but then I remembered it's an LG phone
Stock ICS on my S3
My bro and I thinking of selling SR and S3 for LG4s, my other bro thinking of selling his iPhone5 for an LG4 lol LG4 = Nexus 4 :silly:
But if no one wants to buy my phone then I guess I'll keep it till Nexus 5 or whatever google phone is next
My skyrocket mic has never quite worked right, and I get 4 hours battery life tops if I'm actually using it, like playing music browing flipboard.
I'm a few days before my 1 year warranty with samsung is up, and I guess I could try to send it in for a new one, but I'm not sure they would even give me a new one. I could get an insurance replacement from AT&T but for that $200 I'd rather put it towards the Nexus 4.
I don't use 8gb let alone 16 on my skyrocket, even though I have an extra 16GB sd card installed, I haven't used it since I moved all of my music to google music, mostly listen to pandora anyways. Everything is streaming these days. The lack LTE is kind of lame, but I don't live in an LTE area anyways, and where I do get LTE its never faster than 20MB/s (with HSPA+ capping a 21MB/s supposed max, who cares?) and I'm almost never not in range of WiFi. The upgraded screen resolution is the thing I'm most looking forward to. I can't say I've missed not having a quad or 2gb of ram and felt like I'm missing out in those aspects.

nexus 4 is a great phone, but we're approaching the point where having a super fast processor just isn't the most important thing. on CM10 my SR responds as soon as i click anything, i have no complaints. the nexus 4, however, does not have LTE or sd card, both things i consider to be extremely important.
the only real disadvantage of skyrocket is the low res screen...and im really waiting for the 5inch 1080p panels before i make the jump.
I will forever love the skyrocket!

I wouldn't touch the Nexus 4 for two reasons: no SD card slot, and no LTE. Without those two things, I'd never be able to consider it a daily driver.
I've got a Note 2 on the way, but I'm hanging on to my Skyrocket as well. It's too good a phone to part ways with after less than a year, and it can fill the daily driver role, with the Note 2 being more of a tablet at home, phablet on the road.
Nexus 4. Top end phone for half the price and no contract, can't say no. Rather take hspa battery life over marginally better 1 bar LTE. Obviously some of us are in great coverage but even then with current data caps I don't need 40mbps to load tapa and reddit. Would love an SD card but for 350 for a phone that in any other case would go for 600....
Take it or leave it but to complain or say it isn't enough? If you'd rather pay 600+ for ATTs optimus, suit yourself.

Since I'm still on contract w/ AT&T, I might as well enjoy LTE speeds, since that's the premium I'm paying for. Maybe when my contract runs out and I jump to either T-Mo or Straight Talk, then I'll look at the Nexus. LTE is fast up here in SF (> 20Mbps down), but when I was in LA, it wasn't faster than T-Mo's HSPA+ (averaged between 6-10Mbps down vs. T-Mo's 10-15Mbps when tested side by side at the T-Mo store). My only worry is that HSPA+ doesn't seem very reliable.. at least for AT&T. Example: 2 bars on HSPA+ on AT&T = no reception on my phone. 2 bars on LTE = very fast.
Lack of SD card hurts big time, but maybe I won't have such an itch to flash roms and keep backup roms and apps if I'm running vanilla Android?
So far, very happy w/ the the SR. I know newer phones come w/ faster and more efficient processors, but w/ SkyICS, I've had no problems w/ performance and battery life. My eyes are also not good enough to truly appreciate an HD display. I feel no sense of screen envy when I go back to my phone after looking at my friends' iPhones or Nexus.
I'm really considering the nexus 4 even tho it is lg. Idc about no lte because I don't even have lte in my area.

What to choose from Google Nexus 4 or Samsung S3 or Another..??

Hi all..

I'm currently in the process of doing research on which phone to purchase..
So far I have short listed some phones.. my final decision will be bad on a few factors.. I was going the good old peeps here at xda can assist/help me choose the right phone..
Factors..
1. Phone spec (processor, phone ram, internal/external sd etc)
2. Development (is it easy to root, custom rom development)
3. Look and feel
PLEASE FEEL FREE TO GIVE YOUR OPINION.. GIVING YOUR REASONS AS TO WHY CONSIDERING THE FACTORS MENTIONED ABOVE..

Im in the same situation .. I'll most likely go for the Nexus 4 simply because it's a nexus decide .. First for updates .. Yes please
But on the otherhand the S3 is a better multimedia device seeing as you've got alot more storage compared to the 16GB on the nezus

Yes me too, the storage factor it's an important issue..
Which of the two are the two are easy to hack > root and custom roms.. and easy to restore from soft unbrick..
Any ideas

If money is important, you can buy the nexus from the play store and ask you carrier to forward the money for the new phone upgrade to the payments for the service. This could save some money and you would still be able to use the Nexus 4.
Spec wise, the N4 wins hands down. If storage really is an issue though, then the Quad Core S4 Pro, 2 GB of ram, and the absolutely gorgeous display won't matter. All you'll get hung up on, is how you don't have more than 16GB of storage. Development wise, its a Nexus...'Nuff said.
Look and feel wise, this is the most beautiful device I have ever held. Its not heavy, but it doesn't have a cheap plastic feeling to it like Sammy phones do either. Its light, fits in the hand well, and is just nice to look at it. There's not really any cons to this phone. The only thing you'll notice coming from Amoled displays is the blacks aren't as deep. You get over it quick though the more you use it and notice the lack of over saturation, and increased clarity. And I'll be sure to let you know what Key Lime Pie is like if you go with the GS3.
Also, being contract free, is a truly liberating experience.

i had a GS3 but sold it for a nexus 4. coming from an iphone 4, the GS3 is an excellent device. I wasn't too crazy about how the GS3 handled receiving MMS, but the screen was the ultimate reason for the switch. Everyone talks about how great the AMOLED display is but I just couldn't handle how it viewed when outside in direct sunlight. I never needed external storage and I live in an area that doesn't have LTE yet, so changing to the NEXUS4 wasn't that big of a downgrade for me. Actually, I love it! I did consider the Optimus G, but the lack of Google Now and Jelly Bean pushed me towards the N4. Couldn't be happier..
I would wait a bit for the next Nexus or Galaxy S to come out before deciding, otherwise I would have to say between Nexus 4 and S3. Depends on the functionality and specs that matter to you most.
Maybe you might consider the Galaxy Note 2. Quad core Exynos, 2GB RAM, non-pentile SAMOLED 5.5" screen, S-pen, LTE if you live in an area with it, monster up-time because of the huge removable 3100 mAh battery (I easily do 24 hours on a single charge with 6 hours screen-on time), and SD card.

The nexus4 sounds very appealing as per above comments.. I can live without sd expansion..
What about hacking side, which is easier and in development.. meaning which it's easier to root, flash custom roms etc etc
Does anyone know when either nexus or samsung next new phone will be released..??
