[RESOLVED] Bootloader Unlocked, rooted, OTA update failing? - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
Ok, so I rooted my Razr HD, unlocked the boot loader, and now would like to take the latest OTA update. It is failing right now. I tried a factory reset before doing it, and saved root with voodoo and all that. I am assuming though, that it is failing because the recovery is not stock? It's TWRP.
What do I need to do to get the damned OTA update installed, and then have the custom recovery with root intact?
Thanks!
-------------------------
Resolved:
Used clockwork mod instead, downloaded stock image, flashed using RSD Lite 6.1.4.

You can go the hard route and re-load the stock recovery, re-load all of the stock apps, and take the OTA. You can also fastboot to the latest OTA and just re-root. It's easy to re-root with an unlocked BL, you just need to flash SU in recovery. The easiest option is to find a stock ROM on here and just flash it. I believe there are a couple in dev section. Also, there is one on Batakang that's based off of the latest DST ROM.

Oh ok, so the stock roms are using the updated kernel/baseband/etc ?

as long as you didnt delete or freeze any stock apps put stock recovery back on using this tool. http://www.mediafire.com/download/tt7cwwua49n24uv/Razr_HD_Recovery_Flasher_V7.rar then take the update. make a note of your baseband before you start because the update is going to fail at the end even if it installs. the bb will let you know if you got all you could or if there are issues. afterwards, restore root and use the tool to put cwm or twrp back on.

Hi guys,
So i had my phone rooted with an unlocked bootloader running CM for quite some time. I decided yesterday to go back to stock (factory reset via matts utility). Its been hitting me with an OTA update since then, and i kept hitting install later...install later....
and today i accidentally hit install now. So it tried to do it via CWM recovery, and obviously failed. and when it fails, no matter what i do, it reboots back to the system (which is good), but then immediately tries to run the update again.
Is there any way for me to get this to stop happening? I turned off my phone in case i have to do something via fastboot (save the battery). but can i maybe flash the stock recovery through the utility? would that do it?
Thanks for any help!

This is for the 907 but same steps as for the 926, just get the 404 xml for the 926 & mod the xml as I did for/in the xml file.
There are several steps to delete.

you make 100% without any constraints on mobile downgrade to 4.0.4 and do unlock bootloader the step by step? Please explain you did remove the part where the xml so that it runs correctly on you and me. Thank you for the progress

Just compare the stock & mod9 xmls, no secrets.

Just be warned that downgrading to 4.0.4 will NOT allow you to unlock the bootloader.

Can you restore a nexus s to "factory" settings to receive OTA updates?

Hi Guys, as subject really! Is it possible to get the phone in a "Google" state to pull down updates, obviously meaning the impending ICS one!

I'm implying that you're on a custom ROM at the moment. You'll have to flash one of the stock ROM images, then you can get OTA's again.
It doesn't matter if you're rooted or have an unlocked bootloader.

Hey mate, thankyou for helping. I've not actually received it yet, bought one off ebay and I am just pre-empting - If you flash stock does the root and unlocked bootloader become standard again??
(I'm upgrading from an old Galaxy 3, so am reasonably familiar with flashing, but want a simple life now and am going stock Google )
B
Nope, flashing a stock image will not affect your bootloader being unlocked. You'll have to run the "fastboot oem lock" command to lock the bootloader again. Check one of the turorials here
Greetz
//edit: Actually, I'm suddenly not sure of this. Sunday evenings' got me confused. Please wait for someone else to verify.
Thankyou I'll have a look round
I have been flashing several ROMs using ROM Manager and the bootloader wasn't affected by this. The stock OTAs kept unrooting the phone though.

That's normal, the OTA's reset the permissions on key folders, effectively SU looses it's execute permissions, removing root. What i do now is download the OTA to the SD card, apply it, re-apply the SU.zip to keep root, modify the restore-recovery script so i can keep CWM, then reboot.
I'm not sure how it's going to go with ICS, but we shall see.

Recommendations on OTA (ATT 4.0.3/4.0/1.73)

Hey all,
I rooted my HOX (1.73, 4.0.3) with the kpenn ne-Click a few days after I got it for the Tether and to de-bloat. Since then I haven't read anything on the One X till I heard Jelly Bean coming along. Anyhoo my question is what the upside of getting the new OTA (4.0.4) would be and how I would go about it if I wanted to (I've never updated before and ATT has stopped asking me to update, also I get nothing when I try to check for an update).
I've been reading around and it seems like most people are on to 1.85 and are flashing 4.1/2.2. My primary uses of my phone are for the media applications/web browsing and I haven't noticed any real drop in performance but I have heard the new updates have sped up the HOX considerably which is something I'm always interested in.
Thanks!
DON'T flash any OTA you will lose your root and will lose your ability to re root because there is no boot loader unlock for the new base. If you want to update and flash a new ROM and want to stick to sense, look at clean rom or xi40. Both are updated on the new base and are heaps and bounds better than the original ATT software

i one-clicked unrooted my phone earlier and freaked out (and the new updates didn't work out on my phone anyway). i ended up getting kpenn's one click again and putting SU back into my phone. Do you have any links that can take me on a step by step process of unlocking my phone and flashing those roms on it? I just love being able to control my phone and pushing it to its absolute limits.
Sigh. I followed the tutorial but I made a few mistakes...
1) I unlocked my phone way earlier than I should have so I wiped everything before I could make a back-up..
2) Re-locked accordingly to see if I could keep updating. I did manage to get to 1.85 like the tutorial said but.....
3) Since I didn't have a custom recovery I wasn't sure how to proceed. I couldn't get the root to flash so I tried using the 1-click 1.85 root since my phone was running 1.85.
....This ended up updating to 2.2 so now I have an unlocked HOX 2.2/4.0.4. With all the bloat.
Dumb dumb dumb. Ugh.

it's UNLOCKED?
you're lucky then.
just push a recovery like twrp then push root. Then you can debloat.
Yep, it's still unlocked. That was around the 4-7th reset I did (I messed up a lot). Do you have a link that shows me how to do that? I'm actually not as bummed about going to 2.2 since it runs so much faster than 1.73 did.

make sure you have your unlock token and then go to http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/unlock-instructions/page-4/
and follow the directions.
after that look at this thread to install twrp http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1777773
then this one to re-root

I notice one of the links is for 1.85. Does that mean that I'll go from 2.2 back to 1.85? I just wanted to make sure since my impression from the forums is that there is no 2.2 root yet unless it was flashed.

no those pages just tell you how to manually install root and recovery.
your bootloader is still unlockable
unlock it
then install a recovery
then install root via that recovery
Ahh, thanks a bunch man.
Sorry if this is repetitive....
So I've checked my phone and currently it states that it is
"Re-locked"
I downloaded a recovery so it's currently on my phone. Furthermore I all ready had a copy of SU sitting in my phone's download folder.
Does this mean that I'm going to...
- Unlock bootloader (that is currently relocked) and have everything erased again.
- Reboot from recovery (of the evita 2.2.img I just downloaded with TWRP)
- Then flash the SU root I all ready have on my phone?

yeah unlock the boot loader. set up the phone again
then install the recovery then root.
to make your unlock stick, turn off fastboot in power options, then power down phone completely then restart it to the bootloader.
Hmm, so my phone is definitely unlocked now. I installed the recovery and I manually flashedthe new SuperSU in that link you posted for me. As far as I can tell nothing is happening.
Note: It says that it installs the recovery but there is no reboot that occurs. I've done this both with the android app and manually and nothing is happening.
I don't see SuperSU and rootchecker is confirming that my phone isn't rooted yet.
so you reboot to recovery, choose the superSU package to install then what happens?
I know this works I've done it quite a few times myself.
Presently I installed the latest img file with TWRP with the app. There is not reboot that occurs (unless I'm suppose to reboot on my own?). If that's the case then I've been a total idiot.
I've just been installing the openrecovery and then I press "Flash Roms" to flash the supersu. I get a little notification that says "Preparing to Flash" and then nada.
After you install twrp recovery you reboot. Then you boot to recovery and flash the super su zip manually
Wooh! I got it to work! Thank you so much!

Does this also mean that I can flash any ROMs I want on my phone now?
Yes. But you will have to flash kernels aka boot.img separately using fast boot.

Droid Razr Maxx HD xt926 recovery issue

So i have a Droid Razr Maxx HD xt926
it is on the latest 4.2.1 ota
It was starting to run slow, so i figured it was time to root and get a custom rom. but what i didn't realize is you cant unlock boot-loader.
So i rooted the phone, no issues. i tried to flash TWRP and CWM and both failed.
So when i go to recovery all i get is a black screen with white writiing that says
AP Fastboot Flash Mode (s)
10.9B(#) (sha-1e9f, 2013-05-25 01:04:26)
eMMC info: Size 32GB
Divice is LOCKED, Status Code: 0
Battery OK
Connect USB
Data Cable
Failed to hab check for recovery: 0x56
Fastboot Reason: Boot Failure
I can exit out and get back to android.
Since i can get the bootloader unlocked (at least i dont think there is a way) i want to flash everything back to factory, it can be unrooted as well. just want a clean start on it.
any help would be great thanks.

If the bootloader is locked, it's highly unlikely that attempting to flash a recovery would've touched the stock recovery. With that being said, you can use one of the utilities to flash back to completely stock or use RSD and flash the most up-to-date XML from here:

I've never had to modify the XMLs to work in RSD, but you might have to for some of them. You can swap files in the utilities and put the newest update in there. Also, flashing your zip or any other zip should clear the flash fail.

boot the phone up (just power on), after on plug it into your pc, use the tool i posted in #5 (just going off what RikRong said, any successful flash should clear the failure) flash "stock recovery", let it reboot and see if its fixed.
if its not fixed, im still under the impression you will have to do one of 2 things to fix it from what i read others post previously,
-replace the files in matts utility with the latest ones from the stock files, or
-modify the xml file in the latest sbf to get rsd to work without failing

My Droid Razr HD is doing the same thing
My screen says all of that also.
its says its locked and the battery is ok and all of that
I was trying to root my phone which was unsuccessful.
Now I cannot start and run my phone properly.
when it comes on it has me choose a language and press start and then acts like its loading and says it may take a few minutes. It will do that for hours and never move on to the next step.
How did you fix yours and recover it?
None of the other options on the reboot screen work...
I had tried:
normal start up
AP fast Boot
Recovery
BP Tools
They all lead to the same thing with the language selection and so on.
What can I do?

on the bootloader screen it says "status code 3" correct?
you cant flash cwm or twrp with fastboot?
what exactly is it doing or not doing and does the flash dialog indicate it flashing ok?
you imply, you cant boot into recovery, then say a factory reset wont work. what happens exactly in either of those attempts?
after you flash a custom recovery, you have to power off the phone and boot right into it and flash the su zip (do not boot the system in between), you know that correct?
any other info you can provide that i may have left out could be helpfull in getting this working for you.
Hello everyone,
I know this tread is old but, I have a problem and I hope someone here can help me. I have a mot razr 926 with these specs:
android version 4.1.2;
System version 9.30.1.XT926.Verizon
Kernel 3.0.31 ( I believe is stock)
Build number 9.8.1Q-94-1
My phone was rooted before with stock rom; I had to do a factory reset; so I reset, rooted again and my mistake it was trying to unlock the bootloader ( I know, I know, it's 9.30....)
Now my problem is that I don't have "recovery" or I don't have access to it. Things that I have tried:
Moto utility 1.34
Moto utility 1.3 gpt fix
Razr HD Recovery flasher V7 (tried to install cwm and stock)
I'm just trying to get any recovery working.... any help would be appreciated

Have you tried the stock recovery??, it can be tricky to get into stock recovery by pressing the correct combination of buttons
EDIT: You can use RSD Lite to update your phone to 182.46.10 and use Towelroot to re-root the phone. Once rooted, you can use Motoapocalypse to unlock bootloader.

[Q] Can you OTA update a Nexus 5 and keep root?

Ok so I just recently got my hands on a Nexus 5 which I rooted with CF Auto Root and relocked the bootloader with Bootunlocker for security (I'm guessing I should unlock before the update). I see reports surfacing of a possible 4.4.3 update in the near future. So before that happens I want to figure out the best practice for updating a N5 with CF Auto Root. It stands to reason I'll do a full backup so that's a given.
I'm not new to rooting. Done it a few times. Just haven't had a device that gets regular OTAs in my country so it hasn't come up.
Is there a way to update so that root is preserved? Obviously I'd like to keep the process as simple as possible but if I have to work from scratch it's not the end of the world.
As I understand it, you can do normal OTA as long as it's stock but you lose root. In that case, does the OTA relock the bootloader or will it stay unlocked? Which then basically means a new root which wipes the device.
Or perhaps it's better to ask what the best procedure for updating a stock Nexus 5 with CF Auto Root.
Everything that you have ever wanted to know about OTA can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/info-nexus-5-ota-help-desk-t2523217
Ah thanks. Appreciate it.
generally no, after ota you lose root. but there are apps that will save your root so that you keep root after an update.
I've been looking at Survival Mode in Super SU and RootKeeper but there seems to be some question as to their success.

ive never used any since i dont ota, i update my custom rom as soon as its updated, but ive heard of success with rootkeeper. but it doesnt matter, it literally takes 3 minutes to root a nexus the right way(via fastboot).
Yea, I should use fastboot in future.

The stock Android OS update will not relock the bootloader. So, once you apply the OTA.zip file in recovery, all you will need to do is reflash the SuperSU, and you are done.
(Note that depending on your system status, you may not be able to apply the OTA.zip directly - for instance, if you have updated/deleted system files etc, in which case, you will first need to go back to stock - refer to the link that @mistahseller provided for details about how to go back to stock)

you would need to flash a custom recovery first, then supersu in your custom recovery.
Thanks everyone for the responses. You've made everything much clearer.

Good point. I assumed that op had installed a custom recovery when he rooted, but that is not always the case.
Ok so I'm going to sideload myself. Been a while so I just want to confirm the process so I don't screw up.
I'm using TWRP
Obviously I'll do a NANdroid and probably Titanium as well.
1) Unlock bootloader with Bootunlocker
2) Connect device to PC
3) Boot into TWRP recovery and go to Advanced > ADB Sideload
4) type adb sideload update.zip (or whatever I call the file)
5) reboot device and check if it's working
6) reboot to recovery and reflash superuser.zip
I think that's it. Is there anything else I need to be aware of? If I'm right it should then be updated, rooted and in the same state before I updated.
I am in the same situation. I am currently rooted with a unlocked boot loader. When 4.4.3 comes along I plan to upgrade it. I have only rooted and have CWM no custom ROM. I know o cannot perform a OTA update. So do I copy the update zip (4.4.3) and just flash in CWM? Is this correct, and if so do I lose root/ boot loader. Thanks. I have read the thread above but do not understand

Flash stock system.img and flash recovery.img and then do the update.zip from the stock recovery..
If you don't want to flash, then make sure you have removed all the modifications you have done to system apps. If you don't remember then I would certainly recommend flashing stock images...

6.0.1 ota with stock rooted 6.0

My v10 downloaded an OTA , which im assuming is 6.0
1. Im rooted on stock 6.0 and unlocked boot loader. Will the OTA work without messing up anything ? Ill have to root again im sure, just want some info before i pull the trigger.
I don't think the update will even proceed being that you're on a rooted ROM. I have that notification too, and i just don't know how to turn it off.
I to am rooted, unlockboot and stock rom. I don't feel like taking a chance. So I used titanium backup to freeze the software update and in the drop down notification if you press it, it's a notification from Google play services if you block it in apps it will disappear from your drop down. I also deleted the update zip in the cache folder.I used es file explorer ,device/cache/update

Okay, I'm assuming you are on H90120e (system version). There is a root exploit for the H90120j update. You just do the following:
Make a backup of your apps and settings
Flash your phone to the new update (H90120j)?
Take a look at either one of these threads to root your device again:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-lg-v10/general/step-step-guide-rooting-lg-v10-using-t3382631
OR

You can't flash the phone that is already rooted and has TWRP.
I am in this same situation. On stock rom with root and twrp. I want to update to the new update, but do not want to loose all my apps, settings, etc.
Question is, how to do the initial update before having to re-root again?
How do we flash the phone with the new update?

Why can't you flash the phone that is already rooted and has TWRP?
All you are doing is opening the LGUP tool and flashing the new H90120j .kdz file using the "refurbish" option then flashing the H90120j .tot file that has TWRP using the "update" option which will flash the phone regardless of what is running on your phone. The guides on the first link explain that. I believe your concern is keeping all of your settings and apps. Look up Titanium backup, it works for me.
Thank you. I only flash the LGH901AT-01-V20j-310-260-JUL-12-2016-ARB02+0ROOTTWRP tot file and all is good.
Well except that I lost Dolby audio.
I will look for a fix.

Hi,
Do I have to use LGUP to install the update or can I click install on the dropdown of my phone?
I'm on stock MM 6.0 (H90120e) Rooted and I will not have access to my main PC for another week as I'm traveling.
Thanks,
-NJ
Anyone?

There's a guide in general that tells how to do all this. In fact jun19inf WROTE it.
In a nutshell, do a twrp backup.
Upgrade to 20j by flashing the stock 20j kbz.
Enable usb debugging and oem unlock
flash tot that has twrp in it.
Now you can go into twrp and 1) root via supersu 2) restore ONLY data from your twrp backup taken previously to get your apps etc back. Alternatively Titanium Backup will also do just fine.

If all is you have is root, you should be able to unroot in the SuperSU settings, and then let the update install. But if you have TWRP, then I can't see any way to do the update without using a PC to flash your phone back to stock ROM and recovery. Although you may check the dev. section to see if Eliminator has a flashable ROM to bring you up to date.

Hi all. I just got my factory warranty back and I attempted to root it. Everything went as it should, until just after the install finished. Instead of rebooting normally, it now will only reboot into TWRP. Once there, when I try to flash a custom ROM (in this case, Bliss, but I don't think it matters, I get an error message that says the zip file is corrupt. Then, while still in recovery, when I tried to wipe everything except the sd card, it says mkfs.fat process ended with error. I then powered down and attempted the factory reset. I scrolled down on both screens and it did not say anything about any errors, so I assumed it took. However, it reboots right back into TWRP recovery. It also boots right to TWRP recovery when I try to boot normally. Of course, adb does not recognize the phone in any mode that I can get into (fastboot/recovery/download), so, I can't use LG Bridge to reflash the original firmware. Does anybody have any ideas for a fix? I know that this replacement phone had 6.0 on it. I thought I did everything to a t? TIA...
OK, not sure how I got there, but when I attempt to reboot from TWRP it says No OS Installed! Are you sure you want to reboot? That at least says what the problem is. Does anybody know how to fix this?
Where can I download the update file?

Did you select refurbish or upgrade?
I believe you need to select upgrade when flashing or you get stuck in TWRP

How to root V10 T-mobile M.M ver V20L
How to root V10 T-mobile M.M ver V20L
Can some one guide me on the following:
1. Can I flash back and downgrade to Software version V20J from V20L.
2. Is there any root method for V10 t-mobile MM ver V20L.
1. It is well explained in this forum, you CANNOT go back without facing a software brick.
2. You can root your phone through Dirty_Cow method or by flash Eliminater74 ROM (Part1 & Part2).
Again, search for that in this section and in development one...
