Galaxy Note 3 Software - Tips & Tricks, Hidden Features & Everything Else - Galaxy Note 3 General

Hi Guys,
I shot a 2 part video explaining all (atleast most) of the Galaxy Note 3's software features.
PART 1
PART 2
Hoping this is useful to new comers and existing users alike.
Ash

Very informative and to the point. I'd only suggest turning the phone so it's not so sideways to the viewer, but I learned a lot from those clips.

Noted... I was thinking showing it sideways would stop my hand from obstructing the screen... is is uncomfortable throughout or did i just overdo it at certain parts?
Ash

I don't think you overdid it at all. And you're right, your hand never obscured what you were showing. :good:

So do you think I should continue with this angle in future videos, any feedback would be appreciated buddy, I just want to keep improving... sorry for too many questions
Ash

No sweat. You give more than you ask for!
I think the phone could be aligned more straight to the viewer and still show what you're doing on it, but I could be wrong. I do know that some hands-on videos I've seen hid most of what you were supposed to learn because the reviewer had such fat fingers.

Thanks man I think I got a little too obsessed with aligning the phone diagonally so that I can zoom in the max... will keep it a little straighter in future videos... sometimes when you get in too deep you cant see the bigger picture and end up over analyzing and missing common stuff out... I really appreciate the feedback... Will work it into future videos
Ash

I appreciate your work and look forward to more. I've always kept Google services at a distance, but I broke down and "liked" your clips and subscribed to your channel. Congratulations on being so worthy!

Videos are excellent, a little long combining them both, but still excellent. I didn't mind the angle so much, everything was clear and focused.
I may have missed it, but when I went into AT&T they had a white note 3 on display, the dialer on that phone was white with white buttons, your video seems to show dark with dark buttons? Is that an option or am I crazy?

Might have been an AT&T thing... theres no option to change it tho... and yes they were long... did the short review earlier... I felt that I really couldnt do justice to all of the Note 3's features in a 12 min review and hence decided to do a 20 min one featuring all s/w and then that ended up being a 2 part 35 min video (and thats after 12-14 hours in editing, multiple run throughs and extensive cutting )

Wow great tool man.

Absolutely awesome. Thanks so much for your hard work. Now just can't wait until my note 3 is delivered. :good:
Btw I thought the viewing angle was perfect I could see everything you were doing.

Had seen these before seeing this post and think they are excellent and I learnt a lot from them. It's nice you broke them up made an ideal place to try out some of the features before continuing with the second part. Excellent work I would certainly say you had a future doing these kind of reviews.

Many thanks Ashwin for arranging these two videos.
They are very useful for a fast update on some useful features and shortcuts for the note 3.
Its also helpful to know when certain features don't work, as you show, which can save a lot of aggravation given that the Note 3 manual is not particularly comprehensive.

Excellent
As many others have said, great videos! Nice and clear, easy to understand and follow; very nice pace and to the point. I learned a LOT!

Nice I bookmarked it. Thanks and I like the site design. Well done!
Thery useful video blog. Thanks!
Sweet, i'm getting my GTAB tomorrow so I'll definitely be checking out your site.
very nice!
Thanks
Thanks for adding to the mix.....
Outstanding! Thanks for the extra work, I'm sure many of us will benefit from it.
I plan to follow advice found on XDA and do the following:
1) Open and run the device stock for a bit.
2) Do the OTA update and evaluate. I may be purchasing one for my mother and I think the updated stock will be plenty for her to check email, do facebook and check the weather?
3) Look at Vegan 5.1 and Supplement as well as Clemsyn's kernel.
4) Look at TNT
5) Have fun with it!
Nice blog. My gTab should be coming in tomorrow so get to play around with it.
I'm a stickler for written directions, but a video to follow is even better! Great work!
Suggestion: Any chance of getting a vid up with setting up nvflash, getting the tab in apx mode, possibly pulling/pushing files from/to the tablet?
Thanks again!
You all rock... thanks for the kudos!!!!
@Dueces99: NVFlash is my only hurdle right now... I consider myself tech savvy but for some reason, I couldn't figure that one out... YET... I'm sure I just need to do some more research, but if anyone knows the best how-to on that I would really appreciate it... because lets face it... the Viewsonic Birds have to go... I've seen that logo over a decade ago...
Thanks again everyone... pass on the good word and I'll keep posting videos!!!!
I just checked out the site. Looks great, good work.
Very nice!
Before I say anything, you know that your site is awesome and that you are awesome.
That said, you're no Steve Jobs. When Steve Jobs first presented the ipad in his conference, you could tell from the videos that he tried very hard to present the strengths and cover up the weaknesses. For instance, everytime he pressed a soft button, he always gave it about half a second for the ipad to respond. In your video, I noticed that you kept pressing it really fast and then having to repress the screen.
Yes, your videos are awesome. But if I were you I wouldn't quit my day job to become a salesman LOL
Excellent site- thank you for your hard work
hahaha!

Very true... This is just a hobby and I do every video in one take... Its more about function over form... I'm sure I spent more time on the logo and intro music than I did the composure of the videos... but for what its worth, I will try to rehears a little more so I don't look entirely like a noob!
When my Gtab comes in tomorrow, your site will be on my list of 'have to learn from'. Thanks, my man!!!
Very nice work, thank you!

[Video] How to improve your android experience

Hey guys, I just made a video on how to truly experience the captivate, or any android phone for that matter.
Check it out if you guys want to. Mainly for newer users but everyone is welcome to watch and critique

thanks and yeah i went a little overboard with descriptions lol
May I suggest you keep a list of talking points off camera for reference (maybe rehearse it a couple times before recording?)... To avoid all the "uuuhhhss" and "uuuummmms" it would make the videos shorter and make you sound much, much, more professional.
Flash a new rom.
Bam! Didn't even need a video for that!

i had no idea what you were going to be talking about. start with that.
today im going to talk about... this this and this. now lets start with this....
and nothing you did makes anything "hd" there is nothing worse than making information that uses words incorrectly. it takes HD video, always has, and thats it.
besides that, i like that you are out here to help

continuum 5 eh? I really wanna get into gingerbread. my damn exams are taking too much of my time. but sooooon
and @Trussello
By changing the density like I did, it gives the illusion of an HD screen with a superAMOLED display which isnt even coming out with the S II :S.
I believe that this is far superior to the atrix's screen and it is in essence turning your captivate 'HD'
I think the title is justifiable.
Thanks for your feedback it is much appreciated and im learning a lot

What kind of a calender widget are you using?
It's great that you're doing this for the community Here's some hopefully constructive feedback:
Try to be more to the point. I was curious to learn some stuff, but i found myself getting bored and impatient, which is a shame. You basically spent 4-5 minutes on unlocking the screen with WidgetLocker, without really explaining what WidgetLocker really is, and on ADW EX, but only showing the setting for the number of desktop columns and rows. There are lots of neat things about both these apps, yet i didn't get to see any of it
Keep in mind who your audience is. For the people who are not familiar with the apps you're showing, you want to make sure you explain things. And you want to keep it brief enough so that people who are familiar with the app you're discussing don't get too bored and quit watching. My expectation going into a video like this would be that you will cover several things, and that i may know about a few of them, but not all of them. So the ones i already know about, i'd like them to be short enough that i don't get bored. And the ones i do not yet know about need to be informative enough that i get a basic idea of what it is and does.
My suggestion would be that for each app you try to give a 1-3 sentence explanation about what it is / what it does, and then demo a few features, without dwelling on it too long. I think you could put together a great video if you were to use a rule of thumb like that for each app and cool thing you want to show. Before you start recording, make a shot bullet list of the things you want to mention, so that you can stay on target. (Don't make a script with sentences, because you'd end up reading the script to the viewer, which really doesn't work.)
I hope that that helps you in some way. Again, it's nice you're doing this. I'm just trying to provide some feedback to help you get better I'm looking forward to more videos from you!

Galaxy S4 direct sunlight visibility comparison

EDIT: chrisngrod was nice enough to do a redo of the sunlight comparison test for us. You can scroll down to post #10 to see the updated video.
You didn't include the rest of the post. The SGS4 was on manual brightness which limits the display's output. This is what the poster of that video added...
chrisngrod said:
^This [pointing out the impact of manual brightness] is the kind of productive information that allows for better videos.
I will rerun it as I did verify that the GS4 is dimmer under the conditions explained above.
My Note 2 is running CM10.1 so this could be causing different results. It does not behave in the same manner. Auto brightness = 100% manual brightness.

Yep thanks to @BarryH_GEG for pointing this out.
Only time will tell during the reshoot. My daily is the Optimus G Pro so either way that will lose. I do think the HTC One will edge out the GS4, but this should narrow the gap.
All of these phones are great. One just has to choose what is important to them.

I would imagine it is okay because they are posted in different sections. The way XDA is setup, I don't think there is as much cross board traffic as with other sites.
This might give us the opportunity to hear from pro GS4 consumers vs pro One consumers.

LG Optimus G Pro still gets the short end of the stick here. The video didn't start playing. It is my daily use phone so please don't be outraged and say I'm trying to jack the results.
I love the phone, but the screen's sensitivity falls short IMO when compared to the other ones here. Not a deal breaker. Just takes a little bit more getting use to.

Flipboard Air View feature

Just noticed that Flipboard uses the Air View option, in the home screen you can hover all over the topics and it gives you a preview of the articles, for me it's very cool, nice to see Samsung's features available on Third Parties apps.

I have always asked myself why on this great and other main forums, arrogant people that think themselves so above the rest, come to every thread to post a reply even more stupid than the one they critic.
This is first of all an informative forum, people come here to learn about their devices, so far I haven't seen anyone posting about it, so I came here to inform all of you about it, if you don't like it, just keep on moving, others may appreciate knowing about it.
That's all I have to say about your insult...

All that dude does is go around posting pointless insults. And not in the "search first, noob" kind of way, but rather in the "I don't get enough attention and have to take out my lack of self esteem on internet forums" kind of way.
Best way to deal with people (and I use the term loosely) like that is to completely ignore them. Nothing pisses of someone trying to seem important or insulting than completely disregarding what they're saying. You can't reason with ignorance. But you can piss it off by ignoring it.

Lol, some people... good response OP.

Actually some of these "gimmicky" features, as some people refer to them, need highlighted. So, thanks OP--:0
And yes a few here take every opportunity to bash someone, they are on every Forum I have been on from day one. Just best not to respond. Playing Devil's advocate though, I do sometimes respond to those who want the step by step answer with no research on their own. Main reason I don't like that is that they are doing themselves a disservice by not learning the how and why things are done the way they are in flashing roms. It will come back to haunt them.
I actually use a number of these features and they work very well. Except :eye" scrolling. Hopefully that will be improved and hope app devs and Goolge allow more programs to use these features.
There are too many negative comments on these features here and in reviews along with the screen issue to cause people to hesitate buying this phone. So, these goodies need highlighted in these threads from time to time. It is absolutely a fantastic phone. Functional and Fun at the same time--
Best I have ever owned. Not that I didn't love my Nexus One and HTC One S, but technology just keeps producing better products. And 5 inch is perfect screen size for me.

It will work on Flip Board and Stock Calendar. Do you have it selected in Options?
Can't recall what others atm
EDIT: Oh, works on speed dial--hover over number and contact comes up. don't have to memorize my speed dials now--
Also, by accident had it work on Music Player. If you hover over the lower Next and Previous symbols it will tell you next/previous song. These are when Music player is full screen with Album Art.

[Q] Help making YouTube Reviews, etc

Hey gents,
I was just wondering if anyone had a good set of instructions for making effective YouTube videos? I recently started an XDA-Thread for the Nexus 6 where I'm going to attempt to review all of the popular Nexus 6 ROMs. I want to include video reviews as well, so that people who prefer to watch those can still join in on the conversation.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
For reference, my reviews are linked in my signature.
Hi there!
Reviewing is very important for us users most of the time, personally I like to see what I'm going to get beforehand so I know what to expect.
(sadly I cannot see the videos as I'm on my phone)
What you should do is have a stead camera aiming at the area you have the device it self. Keep it slightly close, not too far away.
Keep your facts about the rom, device or whatever it is in point. Don't use run off sentences. Keep it simple but detailed about it. Not too shabby.
Tell us about your opinion on it, we like to know what you think of it. Keep the video editing professional. I suggest using Sing Vegas or iMovie to edit your footage.
Have a simple 5 second intro, its annoying when intros are 20 seconds long and it loses the users interest.
And post your YouTube link in your post, just to make it easier for people like me to see it.
Good luck!

Sadly, I haven't made any videos yet, or else I would have linked to it as an example> I'm curious what type/how to make the intros and graphics. Do you have any example videos that you think I should use as a semi-template for mine?
On my reviews, all I have at this point are blog reviews, to which I'll add videos once I get a good idea of how to make them.

For intros you can find many tutorials on YouTube. You can also get pre-made ones, just search Intro Templates.
And I don't have any video examples, but try taking a look at mkbhd. He's a fantastic reviewer.

Intro Templates!!! Aha! That should help me figure it out, thanks! I don't know why I never thought to search for a term like that.
I hate when there's something that simple out there and you never even think of it as an option. I'll take a look and see if there's any sort of intro templates I can find that will work with iMovie.
