my tab become so hot hen i use it .. no matter at what frequency i set cpu!
im using next kernel right now ! but even at stock kernel its the same..
im wondring if there is any way to reduce this!??
thanks in advance

Few recommended tips:
1.Off your GPS, WIFI, DATA CONNECTION and BLUETOOTH when not in use. ( they are battery suckers)
2.Use original Samsung charger to charge your tab.
3.Watch your apps which consumes much processor and Ram, after that if they are not important just install them.
4.See your screen brightness, try to increase in daylight and decrease in nights.
5.Use power save option in your tab.
6.Try to charge your tab in switch off mode.
7.While charging don't do task, let it be only charge.
8. Charge only once a day completely without interrupt, rather than always keep on charging for few minutes and then few minutes and so on.. ( You will loose its original capability if you continue doing charging)
Edit: Make sure to uninstall apps which consumes more Processes.
You have to do it manually, no other Magic to keep your tab unheated. Follow above tips.
Underclock your gpu to 307Mhz or 153 mhz (through next kernel) , it will clearly reduce overheating amd battery consumption

The problem is, no matter what program I use, if I set the Tab to downclock at 100/200 or even 100/400 when the screen is off, the phone will freeze in sleep and force me to reset the tablet pressing the power buttornfor 7 seconds.
Anybody else have this issue?
Sent from my Milestone
do you use SerCPU?
I set is 100/400, it sometimes work but my phone was getting random reboot.
So I disabled it...

same issue with me , if I set the cpu to 100 to 300 it would hang or crash coming out of sleep mode . I ended up removing setcpu and going back to stock . i expect the Cooked roms will resolve this later on .
Probably kernel related. If i select the Set On Boot option, after a reboot both min/max freqs will change to a min of 19 and max of 500. Probably best to leave it until we have devs working on it.

there's really no need to underclock when the screens off, you know that right?

Get an app to graph the cpu use, and you will see the cpu spike when sleeping.
So, in short, yes: downclocking with the screen off really help the battery life

It doesn't make much difference as the cpu scaling does a more than adequate job, but whatever wets your whistle
I am looking for every bit of advice I can get to eek out every last bit of juice from my battery for a transatlantic flight. I will of course be in airplane mode and will only be running my reading app and playing music. What settings would you recommend? I am rooted, but not rommed.
I also wonder if those portable battery packs are worth anything. My research tells me that I would need a 15 volt output to charge. But will those with only a 5 v output do anything to help but me extra battery time at all?
low brightness and underclock. that should give you at least 10 hours with just the tablet about 20 if you have the dock too
Yeah if you have the dock as well it'll definitely last the whole way. Brightness is the biggest thing, just keep it low.
Thanks for the advice. Thoughts on underclock settings? Anything gained by switching kernels? I am running the stock kernel right now. I do not have a dock and do not want to drop the big bucks on one or a larger 15 v output battery backup. I was hoping that one of the 30 buck deals might buy me a few extra hours.
Yes, definitely switch to ARHD or Guevor's kernel, noticeable battery increase. Make sure you keep it in airplane mode P) the whole time. I'd set underclock to min lowest freq, max around.. 500-700ish (Normal is 1000, so 50-70% of normal clock) and importantly, set the Governor to 'conservative'
i fink the easiest way is too deatived app like antivirus, low brightness and clean each time you are on the home screen you memory with the asus taskmanager

why are you using an antivirus? you dont need one for android. And clearing ram is not always a good thing as long as the apps are tombstoned not running in the background
Idk if this goes in Q/A or not I never had a Q/A section as I came from the amaze but anyway. What battery savers do you guys find best? I Use Batter Defender but doesn't seem to really extend it. Would i be better of not using one at all?
I use 3 programs to help me maximize my battery life.
1) Badass Battery Monitor to figure out what's sucking juice, how long I've left, and how long until I'm full.
2) 2x Battery to manage background data. This probably saves me the most battery by disabling that data transfer a lot of the time.
3) Lux Auto Brightness to tweak my screen brightness. It's pretty much on "dark" now all the time aside for when I'm in really bright light.
JuiceDefender
I use the free version and it's very good!
I think the most effective battery saver is to flash a kernel that has become voltage control features and undervolt the cpu.

I'm not a fan of under volting the CPU. Mainly because if my understanding of Ohms Law is correct, it's pointless. And my personal experience with it seems to corroborate my feelings.
Under volting the CPU in my experience just introduces stability and reliability issues. I've personally never seen any battery savings from it, especially since the CPU should, theoretically, just draw more current (I) to compensate for the lower voltage (E). It's watts (P = ExI) that matter, and the CPU, if I understand correctly, is going to demand the necessary P for the frequency requested. So under volting either starves the CPU (it can't get enough P), or over currents it (it draws more I to compensate for less E). There are slight variations in each CPU, obviously, which may allow for a margin of under volting to be possible without issue, but the battery savings of this, I feel, are so small, any you notice are most likely a placebo effect. Your screen, and apps constantly polling the CPU or network are your biggest source of battery drain to worry about IMHO.

I use Power Controls widget.
Unless I'm actively using internet, I make sure to turn 4G data to 2G. That alone saves so much battery. If I want further battery saved, I disable internet completely with a touch of a widget. Now my phone will last a week just by what phones do best: Making phonecalls and texting.
I'm on 2.1 GHz overclock processor and when battery goes below 30% it goes to 1ghz I can see the battery being saved

With an higher frequency the phone will use more power, like a pc processor when you overclock it so this is natural, but overclocking/downclocking has nothing to do with undervolting, MadJoe is right.
With JuiceDefender for example you can set your 3g/4g to shut off when you don't use the phone, it activates 3g/4g when you use your phone and at regular intervals in backgroud so it can fetch emails etc.
All automatic so you don't have to switch off and back on network connection every time.
As network connection is one of the services that consumes the battery a lot this is really effective and really improves battery life!
I've read a lot of complaints about these PowerManagement Apps using more battery life then they safe.
I don't know if this is right.
At the moment I'm running CM9 with modified auto-brightness options, auto-sync and 2G/3G/WIFI always on.
I'm really happy with the battery life I get, so I don't see why you would need a Battery Saver app with this phone.

Seems to be a nice idea. But could you elaborate as on why the text is bold and you had to use capslock for 1/2 of it!?
@slind ok i fixed the post. i will be posting links to the posts who are great battery savers without loosing performance
So basically, we use an I9500 like an Ace or a Grand to get rid of heating and battery drains.. Andyou suggest that it won't result in performance loss. I'd suggest playing games that are more graphically intensive and not just Temple Run.. Try copying data from one memory card to another, or simply try running a Full HD Video. Also, check out web browsing or maybe multitasking, and you'll see where the performance dies out.
I think the fix should come in the upcoming releases of stock firmware by Samsung. By turning off a couple of cores, you're only going back a couple of years. I don't think I upgraded from the S3 to S4 for that reason.

everyone has there preferences and there needs in a phone. and there own settings. and this is a Battery discussion thread. we will be doing many performance and voltage mods, so everyone could choose the settings that suits them. now please dont post aggressive post like that, im not stupid. i know that my settings are very low.
but for my most played games and most used apps. it doesnt seem to effect my performance, so im comfortable with my settings
i had the phone for 2 weeks, happily showing off battery performance and then i asked myself again, why the heck i bought this phone in the first place? BECAUSE IT HAS REPLACABLE BATTERY!.. LOL.. how silly i am trying to squeeze that little drop of power out of the battery when I can double the battery just by getting another spare.
no need to turn off anything, no need to drop performance or screen brightness.. just pure enjoyment of the full potential without worrying battery problem.. just get a spare.

I didn't mean to be aggresive and sorry if you felt like that. All I mean is, there is a limit to which you can undervolt/underclock your phone without losing the functionality or speed. While underclocking to 1.0 ghz or 1.2 ghz sounds kinda normal, going all the way down to 800 Mhz and that too only on two cores is like running Galaxy Ace Dual Core instead. Why would I want to spoil my S4 for it?
That is all that I meant. And the phone is normally shelling out a good day's use in normal usage. Why bother so much about battery really???
My S4 i9505 came with MDE ROM from the factory, apart from doing dirty flashes over dirty flashes, finally someone came up with a recovery which is working. So i've :
1. Formatted system , cache , dalvik
2. Loaded in Djembey's stock slim deodexed ME2 ROM.
3. Using PimpMyROM, did some moderately less aggressive tweaks.
4. Capped the Max frequency at 1674MHz. Interactive gov, Noop sched.
5. Fully charged and unplugged.
6. Fully on 3G . Gmail sync for calendars, contacts, mail, keep, notes. Moderately heavy on Gtalk and Whatsapp. Browsing news and websites.
Observed 4 hours screen time.
Almost 15 hours of total usage + standby (This doesn't mean much, screen time depicts usage time more)
The phone still feels warmer than S2, under operation.
I've yet to try faux kernel yet, but i doubt it would get much better than this. The physical limit i feel is on the CPU, HD AMOLEDs, and the modem itself under normal usage.
Feel free to comment.
Hi,
hope you may be able to help. I have been trying almost everthing to increase the music volume as the s4 does not drive my senheiser headphones as well I would like. Is it possible to increase the gain through a kernel mod somehow?
Wow you're really random. This thread isn't even remotely discussing about the issue you raised.
Try the omega ROM thread, see if the functionality list includes volume hack.

Well, it depends on the game, how resource intensive it is.
In your case, what I can think of is to reduce the screen brightness to minimum.
Other than that, try turning on battery saving mode to reduce CPU usage.

Try turning the display brightness down. Also it depends what game it is. It could be a CPU intensive game and there's not much you can do about it. Unless of course you've rooted your phone and then you could clock down the processor a little to make it use less power at the cost of the game running slightly less smooth.

Install and check Better Battery Status, it will give you the right app which is misbehaving and you can easily handle with it
And i do not see the point in spending so much but still not using it properly (Ps. I never turn the brightness to lowest, neither run my device on power saver)
Ya u r right m also facing same issue with Gt-i9192
But here are some steps to save more battery
1-reduce your brightness don't use auto ,set brightness manually to low level
2- smart features such as smart stay , voice control and motion sensors etc. reduce more battery , use them whenever you want to show off otherwise turn off them.
3-At last but not the least and most effective step go to settings > more >about phone > tap 7 times (fastly) on build no. It will turn on your developer options.
In developer options limit background apps to 2 this will increase your ram and battery life also
4-And last root ur phone & use custom rom (upgrade to lollipop/ s5 proyect) they are far better in power consumption
