Custom rom sensation xe - HTC Sensation

Since my phone doesn't appear to have its own forum ill post here.
My issue is this. That HTC shell keeps crashing more and more on me eg when i close Firefox lore often than not it flashes that whhite screen with HTC logo. Now i wanna do my first attempt at flashing a custom rom.
I'm s-off and hboot 1.27 i think. According to HTC the hardware is not capable of running 4.3 but I'm wondering if it can withal a custom rom. That sense shell has to be slowing things down.
I'd love a rom as close to stock android as possible if there is one. Are there any specific current build details i need to save? Like baseband, build number, imei (as i read somewhere that certain roms could change/remove the imei number resulting in not being able to register on my provider's network).
The rom will have to be able to operate in Belgium (and the eu in general) and offcourse have superuser been flashed. I'll install supersu myself.
Can someone help me out?

use ARHD 7.3 ROM
it is the closest to the ics stock
or revelation rom which is the closest to the jelly bean stock
by the way it won't change nothing at all(imei etc)
before flashing do a nandroid backup
full wipe
then flash the new rom
also sensation/xe/4G are the same devices

Do you have any links to either of them and maybe YouTube vids? Which one will give the smoothest results on my phone. Its not exactly the best hardware anymore and may be underpowered for ics. Since they will be most likely to be based on HTC builds, i will need one that can remove al that HTC aps crap and stuff like Facebook, twitter,... i don't use any of that stuff.
Which recovery is best too? Twrp, cwm or 4ext?

You don't need to unlock bootloader via htcdev. Just flash the 3.33 firmware and patched hboot for more fastboot commands. Just check the firmware thread in development section.
And for recovery i'll suggest 4EXT or TWRP.

according to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubJIvUv7Lyk ViperS has a bit of a battery drain problem and camera not working? Is this fixed? How's the battery usage
one feature i do require is usb on the go. How does viperS run compare to revelation, did either of you try em both out? no problem with the google play store? How does OTA work, since the device won't be receiving updates from HTC anymore, does it check for newer versions of the rom?
i would also like to keep beat's audio
oh and i suppose it's multi-language? I would like to use dutch ofc. SMS dictionary spellcheck & prediction? GPS?
sry bout all the questions but this will be my 1st ever rom flash

Battery is quite better than other JB ROMs in ViperS. Camera is working totally fine. It just multiple HDRs causes reboots which is a known bug.
Both ViperS and Revealation have USB OTG support. If you like to play and tweak your phone go with ViperS and if you want stock JB Sense experience go for Revealation.
OTA support is provided by Team Venom and right now both ROMs are rock stable. Just some negligible bugs and you can live with them. Its my daily driver so don't worry about it. GPS works fine and it support multi languages. Go for it and give your Senny a new life.

i have never used TWRP but surely has an option to backup all of them at once

Backup went flawless. Now a last question and i should be good to go. I know i can use titanium backup to restore aps from my 'stock" rom to the viper rom for play store aps. But what about "system" aps like "mail" can i use titanium to restore the account settings or is it safest to start completely from scratch since it will be a totally new rom.

[GUIDE][2.3.4 OFFICIAL HTC S-OFF ROOT] Pyramid_HTC_Europe_1.45.401.2-1.35.401.1_P2

THIS IS FOR UNBRANDED 401 PHONES ONLY! IT MIGHT WORK FOR OTHERS BUT I WOULD RATHER NOT TRY...
Update 2011/08/14
Added more information and details
Renamed thread into GUIDE
Using this guide will reset your device into a vanilla 2.3.4 HTC Sensation phone. Your SD-Card wont be touched and you will have S-OFF and root. This will lock your bootloader but that should not be a problem since you are still S-OFF and can flash whatever you want - except the bootloader. I tested these steps and i have a 2.3.4 401 Sensation with Locked HBOOT, S-OFF and root.
If you want S-OFF & ROOT on the latest HTC 2.3.4 ROM follow the steps:
1) Backup
2) Get S-OFF on 2.3.3 (Guide Thread)
3) Recover your phone with original 2.3.3 Update
http://www.filefactory.com/file/cc03797/n/RUU_Pyramid_HTC_Europe_1.35.401.1_Radio_10.43a.900 7.00U_10.51.9007.27_M3_release_198179_signed.exe
4) Update to 2.3.4 via "Over The Air" (OTA) or using OpenRecovery (OR). I did not use the OR-Method but you can find a lot of information about here. I do not advertise any guides for the OR-method since i did not test them myself.
4) Execute step 2.1 to 2.6 from the Sensation Guide (Guide Thread)
5) Get root again: Sensation Guide 3.1 to 3.12 (Guide Thread)
Have fun!

anyone have a change log? google failed me for once in my life
The 2.3.4 update include an new hboot Version 1.18...
Are u sure that u can install cwm and root the phone again after applying the update?
I think u will be s-on again after the hboot get changed...
Everything I'm reading (the two other threads about this update) says the above method will NOT work. I don't think the OP even tried. Wait for a real dev to cook this up.

Oh boy Some of use knew this was gonna happen
do not flash this to a stock rooted rom - it will **** it up - wait for your favourite dev to update their rom
flashing this will give you the new locked htc bootloader and you will not be s-off anymore (even though it still says you are)
it's taken me nearly 3 hours to get back to normal

I've just done this update
Backup with Titanium
Reflash with 2.3.3 stock ROM (my Sensation was already S-Off)
OTA update to 2.3.4
ClockWork Recovery
Root
Restore with Titanium
Reboot and that's it
No OTA
I did exactly like shown in the first post, but i wont get the update ota. It sais that my phone is actually actual.
Could I have done something wrong?
Got the Sensation from T-mobile -> debrandet it like this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193033
And used the RUU version from the first post.
Thanks
done as suggested - works fine for me!

no - i did not try to.
I am pretty happy with my phone right now. Fast and long battery pack - replaced Sense with LP.
When testing the early (pre-soff) custom roms and test recoverys I had to flash stock RUUs a couple of times.
To get the phone back into a decent state I needed to pg58 flash eng&unsecured boot then root and fastboot recovery.
Can't for the life of me think why anyone would s-off their phone then install stock/ota for any reason (bar repair). It's like buying a track day race car, shouting "look what I've got" then pushing it around rather than thrashing it.

Thanks. That's what I thought. I removed the hboot from the OTA before flashing it so couldn't confirm for myself. There's been a lot of conflicting information about whether phones are still S-OFF after running the unmodified OTA but it appears that they are. I only ran the RUU then OTA so I could have a backup of a stock 1.45 system.img.

Rooted and S-OFF Tmobile stock rom. How to get ICS?

ClockwordMod Recovery v4.0.1.5
Android version 2.3.3
HTC sense 3.0
Software version 1.29.531.2
Kernel 2.6.35.10-gb7a86da
Can anyone give me some instructions or link on how to upgrade to the latest USA T-mobile ICS Rom?
Thank you.
Same here. I've read so many threads, I'm confused as to which procedure to follow...
I have:
Android 2.3.4 with Sense 3.0 (Stock Tmobile ROM)
HBoot: 1.17.1111
ClockworkMod: 5.0.0.8
Could some post the steps to install the stock TMobile ICS onto the rooted phone?
First of all you have to get rid of CWM to get OTA to install.
In this case you have to back up everything and flush T-mo RUU. It will bring your phone to stock condition with HTC recovery. Then go to Settings and check for HTC updates.
S-OFF does not matter. ICS installs fine with S-OFF.
Here where you can find T-mo RUU: Thanks to original poster!
I saw 3 files on that link to RUU. Which one to use to flash?
What do I have to backup from the current phone?

Back up everything you use, contacts, apps, oh.... I especially backed up my CoPilot... Whatever you think you like, Angry Birds???? LOL Especially if you beat a lot of levels, then back up data.... won't need to start from scratch...LOL
Emails, SMS/MMS... oh well..what you care about. Use Titanium Backup.
Don't forget your Google account, so you won't need to create new one. As you flash RUU yer phone gonna be at point 0.. You'll have to go through initial sign in and so on....
Good luck!!!
Thanks to T-Macgnolia for the RUU!!!
That link goes to the Gingerbread RUU.
Is there a way to install a TMobile ICS update without using the OTA update?
Like update firmware and then the ROM or something???
I read several pages here, but I'm still uncertain what to do.

No the RUU does not do anything to the SD card, it only deals with the NAND memory of the device.
For those of you out there that do not know what an RUU is please read the quoted post below
T-Macgnolia said:
RUU stands for ROM Update Utility. This is a utility that is run via a .exe file that is used to flash a stock ROM, stock radio, stock splash screen, stock recovery, and stock firmware of a device. The utility performs a cleaning of the NAND memory of the device before flashing the included stock software. So a RUU is often suggested as a way fix common problems and to unroot a device. The utility also runs a set of checks on a thea device before flashing such as CID (Carrier Identification), battery level check, and firmware version check.
A custom RUU is does the same as a RUU but it has been modified to not run the CID check and sometimes other security checks. You can flash custom ROMs, different radio versions, splash screens, and firmwares. You can even use a custom RUU to flash each of these individually.

questions about unlocking

Hi, I have my Desire S totally with the stock system. So S-On, bootloader locked and oficial rom 2.3.5 branded from Vodafone Spain. Finally I decided to unlock my desire S and to change the rom, etc. After reading a lot, the following are the steps i want to do for that.
Before all I would like to back up my apps, sms etc, contacts are in google so i dont worry about them.. ¿How could I do it with my stock desire S?
Once i have the back up I will perform these steps:
1.- First to downgrade de Hboot ( mine is 2.00.0002 locked) following this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399331 or this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1443636
I read that this method has benefits over to unlock by htcdev when you want to fash custom roms, and you dont lose the warranty.
In this step what rom should I use to downgrade if my phone is vodafone Spain branded with rom version 2.10.161.3? maybe this RUU_Saga_Vodafone_UK_1.32.161.1_Radio_20.28b.30.0805U_38.03.02.15_?
2.- Once I have the old Hboot 0.98.00000, unlock it and s-off with revolutionary http://revolutionary.io/
3.- Root with this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1296916 or this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
4.- Install 4 EXT recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377745
5.- and finally choose a rom, maybe MIUI, and flash it.
Any suggestion/correction or advice?
Thanks!
Which ruu to use I don't know. But step 3 is not necessary. All roms are pre rooted.

Aha, so once I have unlocked with revolutionary and changed the recovery I could install any custom rom and it will have root already?
Maybe before install the custom rom I should flash the new eng Hboot so i can flash ics roms, right?

Hi I did not change my Hboot
Following various posts especially this one
"How to root, install EXT4 recovery and custom ROM on HBOOT 2.00.0002"
source http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525100
by N0elite ( thanks - sorry can't thank you on here yet)
I was able to root my phone with S-On
now it has an unlocked root using HTCDEV Unlock | S-ON | HBOOT 2.00.0002 | 4EXT Recovery v2.2.7 RC5
Note on the HTC dev website you have to Select the bottom option 'all other supported models' from the htc dev unlock root website
as desire S is not listed
then I downloaded a fantastic operating system ( rom) called virtuous Saga which has Sense version 3.6 and android 4.04.
( also via this forum - more thanks to mdeejay - again unable to thanks you on the forum yet)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1669497
I did not flash the firmware because I have no idea what that means and it sounded potentially hazardous and I read somewhere you cannot do it with S-ON ( whatever that actually means) - I only installed the saga ROM which works fine with nothing faulty that I have so far tested
I just installed the virtuous saga zip on my sd card, installed it from the recovery screen and then had to flash the boot.img from the zip file using flashboot from my PC
Result - Bluetooth works and my phone has lots of nice updated features also Bluetooth keyboard works perfectly now with this (Again not sure if it makes a difference but this keyboard works using a bluetooth mode called spp rather than HID) And I still have the lovely clock and weather widget - in fact it does not look much different to my old android version - just faster and smoother.
If you try this make sure that your Google account is synced and all contacts are backed up . I also used BookmarksSB to back up bookmarks, Astro to back up all my applications to the sd card, and SMS back up & restore to back up all my sms messages. all free in the Google market.
I also took my sd card out when following the steps to format and clear caches in recovery mode because I did not want to accidentally wipe my SD card.!!
hope this helps

Thanks!

Your goal is to change the rom and backup your phone's current state. Right? You can follow these simple steps:
a. Unlock bootloader by http://htcdev.com/bootloader/
b. Flash custom recovery (4EXT)
c. Backup your phone by using recovery
d. Install new rom, dont forget to flash boot.img separately (because of your phone was unlocked by htcdev.com)
e. [Optional] Root if need
The steps you're going to take are right. You should write down what RUU you have now in case you want to go back.
It looks like you know enough about rooting and flashing and the alpharev way is the best. Via HTCdev you can't install ICS if I am correct.
Good luck and welcome to the world of rooting!

Thanks but I wanted to do it without using the official unlock of HTCDEV to avoid to have to flash the boot everytime I flash a rom and lose the warranty.

Yeah I wanted to avoid HTCdev...
Is there any way to back up my rom before doing anything?
WIth astro can I back up my apps without beeing root?
Anyone knows what room should I use to do the downgrade being my phone branded from Vodafone Spain?
No, there is no "normal" way to keep your apps and their data.
You can gain temp-root and manually zip+copy the /data/ directory (to retain permissions), I suppose. But I don't think it's something you're able to do. And restoring data from it would be quite some pain, too, and require fixing permissions as far as I remember.

No way. You should s-off OR unlock bootloader first.
If you dont want to use htcdev.com to unlock bootloader, you can downgrade hboot and then s-off. Search in the "Desire S General" box, there are 3-4 thread about hboot downgrading and s-off.
Ok so I will do it without back up of apps. Just need to know wich rom to use to downgrade...
Thanks to all!
You could back up the apps without the data using go launcher backup.

Without the data means only the apk, right? So the file to install it that most of them are already in the play store. If it is like that, it has not many advantages, but thank you anyway.

[Q] a couple questions

I just picked up the HTC 1x att version. When I got the phone it was already rooted and running paranoid android. Here is where I have a couple of questions. It has cwm touch as a recovery, I booted into the boot loader and at the top it says
***tampered***
***unlocked ***
Evita pvt ship son rl
Hboot-1.09.0000
Radio-0.17.32.09.12
Open DSP v28.1.0.32.0504
Why does it say tampered? I have had a few htc's first one was the dream. And have yet to see one say tampered.
Next, on the HTC boot screen it says some stuff about software not for use outside HTC..... is that part of the custom ROM?
And can anyone recommended a ROM that I can flash that is closer to stock or that contains the sense ui?
Thanks there's a lot I still need to read on here about this phone, any info will be greatly appreciated

Thats normal...i dont know why either, but it means u're rooted and unlocked.
Rom that is close to sense:
- viperxl (im using it and its amazing)
- cleanrom (havent used it, but people been saying its amazing)

I would suggest downloading goomanager from the play market first before you go much further.
Open goomanager and open the app settings. There is an option to install openrecovery script.
This will pull the latest version of TWRP recovery and install it for you without any hassle. CWM has a lot of issues on the One X so try not to use it.
Other then that you Hboot being 1.09 means you don't have to flash the boot.img before you flash a rom. So if see install instructions for a ROM asking you to do that you can skip that step. This will save you a lot of headaches. It also means you can flash custom kernels and radios to your phone.
Viper Rom is a Sense rom that you can tweak like crazy and change almost every aspect of the rom.
Clean Rom is very close to stock with some optimizations added to it that make it one of the top roms.

OK I'll have to try them out. Now I need to flash the boot image before installing the ROM? It seems more involved than the sensation XML I just retired. Is there a way to flash it from the phone being my laptop met its end via my 4 year old and a coffee.

HTC is constantly changing their security schemes, in reality to make it harder for the modding community to do their thing. So whatever you have experienced on past HTC devices doesn't really apply.
Its going to say tampered if its rooted, and possibly also if bootloader unlocked whether rooted or not (not sure). If you return to stock ROM and relock the bootloader, the tampered flag will go away. But the bootloader will only read as RELOCKED, you can't return it to the original condition of LOCKED (at least not currently).
The red text on the boot screen is also normal. It will appear if you are bootloader unlocked. There is no known way to change this at this time.

You only need to flash the boot.img seperately if you are on hboot 1.14 or higher. You are on hboot 1.09, so you don't need to do it. It will flash automatically when you flash any ROM from recovery.

If you aren't on the supported firmware it won't work. So, if that doesn't work for you then I would just leave it S-on. It isn't hard to fastboot flash a boot.img before flashing a rom in recovery.
Ok, thanks for your reply. I want to flash cm 10.2. That should be possible without s-off?

Yeah. It is just recommended that you are s-off.
As the guy said before you need to flash boot.img (the kernel) afterwards.

I just noticed this thread.
I also have a similar problem. I cannot achieve s-off with my (S4) htc one s , running the exact same hboot as op.
To upgrade to jb 4.2.2 sense 5 which we should be getting for which we now won't despite them making the update.
Will we be able to upgrade to this new patch with s-on using the flash boot?

Maximus HD --- No you need S-off for this. The firmware updates your Hboot, Radio, and you flash a different recovery and finally Rom
You might check out other Rom's that have Sense 5 4.2.2 features. They do not require S-off like Maximus does.
Hi thanks for your reply.
Do you know of any such roms that don't require the s-off?
I installed odyssey, its got no google playstore..suddenly my computer no longer recognizes my sd card / phone.
I tried adb push, managed to get a stock orang001 tmobile uk package to the root folder, but when i turn off the mount, it says its bad..which is a little odd.
Seems thought I got odyssey installed / flashed etc, its so bare as its practically useless to me unless i have google, plus its got weird glitches on boot up, taking forever, always booting into the developers screen etc.

With Odyssey you have to flash slim gapps after you install the rom.
Your Sd card (partition) may be corrupted, the way to fix that is to put the stock recovery back on your phone then go to bootloader and "clear storage"
All of the other Roms don't require S-off, MagioRom is being actively developed with the sense 5 and 4.2.2.

Please tell me how did you manage to install MaximusHD ROM without S-off!
I'm a little scared since I read they have a lot of problems while installing this ROM.
I'm using CM10.1 right now, but I would like to have sense 5 on my HTC One S.
I have unlocked boot loader and TWRP recovery.
I read there are other ROMS with sense 5 like MagioRom, which doesn't require S-Off (As far as I know)
Is there a great difference between MagioRom and MaxiumusHD? All I want is Sense 5 on my phone without all the terrible of S-offing!!

I tried Maximus with CWM, did i using sideload and them flash the boot.img file. but it was a disaster as my device didn't connect to wifi and had some call drops then I tried flashing twrp and then sideloaded magicrom 4.0 and flas boot.img, it looks lot better now but only issue right now is my phone keeps on rebooting and am still waiting for a stable rom to be released.
I read MagioRom comments and they say with that ROM phone reboots a lot. So I think the only way is with MaximusHD. The WiFi problem I think it can be fixed. I don't know about the call drops, but many have this ROM as daily use so I guess it's ok. I will try S-off with moonshine method, then try install Maximus. Hope my phone survives.
