[Q] Installed Cromi-X 5.03 now...disable root? - Asus Transformer TF700

I have installed Cromi-X 5.03 on my Asus Tf700, is there a way now to disable root???
As far as I understand, having root access, apps can install and have access to system files and private data. Is that correct?
Thanks in advance!

Well yes that is true but, root permissions are managed by an app such as chainfire's. So its up to you what apps can reach root access.

Disabling root on a custom rom really defeats the purpose!
YOU have to give an app permission to access root, so as long as you read the permissions an app asks for when you install it, you will be ok. If you don't trust the app - don't install it....

Cromi-x rooted tf700 and permissions.

Regarding "disabling root on a custom rom really defeats the purpose". Well..My intention was not to play around the android, I installed cromix just looking for a good fluent rom. And indeed, it is.
However, if apps that need root will always ask for permission, I can live with that. I'm wondering if there are apps that can make use of root without asking to the user.

No, unless someone finds an exploit, but if you find an app that does this, you should maybe rethink about from where you get your apps

Don't forget some if not most of the optimisations require root. So if you disable root you may find the ROM slow and laggy like stock again......

Dear Darren Duncan,
Very nice job you have done. I bought the asus tf700 thinking that with a tegra 2 will really compete with the fluency of the IPAD windows. However, since I turned it on for first time and started to install the first apps I was really disappointed.
I'm just a consumer with general knowledge about technology. Hence, I just understand technology but don't know how to create.
I would be really glad to know your opinion in a basic language, about why diifferent roms of Android OS can run so differently in identical tablets. And if you have an opinion about why stock roms from Ausus are so laggy or slow or smoothless. and finally, if you think Android OS can really be optimized to run as smooth and fast as IOS from apple or is only a matter of hardware.
Thanks again,
Guido.

Hi Guido,
Thanks for the kind words. Why are they laggy - because they used a cheap crappy emmc memory chip. Why are some ROMs quicker - because stock based ROMs are designed for the Asus tech and it's easier to mod them around the slow IO.
My wife has an iPad 3 and tells me my transformer runs better than hers. However, android is not quite there in terms of fluidity and smoothness yet IMO. But we are getting close.

Hi sb,
I am on the latest bootloader and would like to downgrade to 4.1 as I'm having a lot of problems with this rom. How would I do so, do I just flash the 4.1 bootloader and then the rom?

In essence yes but you will also have issues with the sd card layout now as well. 4.1 won't understand what 4.2 has done to it so you may need to format data as well. What issues are you having?

I'm having random boot loops and some heat issues. I also want a more polished rom. So the exact steps are:
2) Full format wipe
1) flash bootloader
3) Full wipe again, power off
4) Install rom
Will I have to downgrade twrp again?

I remember booting a 4.1 ROM with the 4.2 bootloader and it worked just fine. So formatting /data and reinstalling the ROM should be enough.

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend you. To clarify, I didn't mean your 4.2 rom, I meant 4.2.1 was a pretty buggy release in general, also the 4.1 release had much more updates.

The 10.6.1.14.4 to 10 bootloaders are identical, except for the version number and build date.
I tested everything on TWRP 2.4.1, but I see no reason why a later TWRP would not work with Android 4.1.

Thanks that and sbdags, it worked, now running cromi 3.47

Installing CLEANROM on a TF700

Recently traded in my iPad for the TF700 and I can say I am indeed pleased with my decision, however I am new to the community and have been recently searching for a method to install CleanROM to make my user experience even better, or as it so claims. So far after reading through a couple of guides I have been able to unlock and permanently void my ASUS warranty, which I am okay with. I'm not sure if I'm rooted or not (lol) but I tried running SuperSU and it said something about not being able to write into the binary files so I guess I'm not. Anyways heres a quick breakdown of what I've done and what I'm hoping to accomplish.
TF700 32 GB
I got the OTA update for JellyBean 4.1.1
I didn't do anything until now so I guess you could say I got the tablet with Jellybean installed on it vanilla.
Unlocked Successfully.
Flashed CWM recovery but for some reason when I try to enter from the boot loader menu the screen just flashes on and off. I've transferred the clean rom zip into the root of my device already. anyone know the problem? Thanks!
you need to root it. let me see if i can find the thread that has all the steps.

Needless to say I'm happy again.

...oh and by the way welcome and enjoy the Infinity!
If you've unlocked the bootloader then you don't need to root, just install custom recovery and flash the ROM of choice...

I think I know where the little confusion comes from: you need root access to install TWRP from GooManager, but not for flashing anything from recovery.
So, if you've unlocked the bootloader and flashed CWM already, you're all set to flash CleanROM. As you should know, you will end up with a pre-rooted OS, so there's no need to follow through with anything other than customizing to your liking in-OS.

What is the current version of CleanROM
I have done a little research and CleanROM appears to be recognized as fast, stable, and not having issues with assorted features (i.e. GPS, camera, etc.). I have had a hard time finding what the most current version is, what Android version it is based on (i.e. 4.1.1, 4.1.2, 4.2.1, etc.). Is there an offcial site, including downloads someone can point me towards? Thanks.

Anyone else got Firmware Update 10.4.4.23?

Busy with nothing I simply pressed the button to check firmware update for my TF700T. Then a notif came up telling me to install an update. After a temporary unroot I did what it said, and now I'm running Firmware 10.4.4.23-20121127, mine is WW. Root restored without any issue after rebooting.
Can't really see any changes (yet), probably have to dig deeper.

I did an Antutu benchmark, before update I was getting about 13300 or so, now I am getting 14400. I also think they have unlocked 1700 mghz for all cores except power saving obviously.
Got the update too, nothing too obvious seems to have changed.....
And I forgot to backup the dlpkgfile, sorry @geri.st

You haven't seen the performance of Cleanrom and Clemsyn kernel yet. I ran the .23 version and it's no where near the performance of the Cleanrom/clemsyn combo. I went back to stock just to see the .23 perfornace, but after one day, I'm back on Cleanrom/Clemsyn kernel.

From what I've read I truly believe in you. The problem is that I didn't use NVFlash when possible (had already updated the bootloader) and I don't want to risk unlocking and flashing ROM's for now. The tablet is not sold in my country and if I brick it I wouldn't be able to repair nor to buy a new one.
I am not a newbie on flashing ROM's in general because I still own a HD2 but I do know there are risks on the process.
Thus, I will probably wait for the 4.2 update to decide between unlocking it or not.

I hear you, you do have a point!
I agree that this update really improved the speed of my tab. Might not be clean rom fast, but it's still warrantied fast
It's a bit faster now. At this rate we'll be fully happy with the speed around April. For me it does what I want it to just fine So what if I have to wait 1 second instead of 0.5 second for an app to open? And the very, very rare (no, I don't get them a lot. once a day, at most.) ANR messages are a whole lot less irritating than the constant "Are you sure" UAC rubbish I deal with daily on W7. (technologically impaired clients. Ugh.)

I, too, am not risking unlocking. While it is for sale here quite regularly and the EU covers warranty concerns, I bought it from a store that's not known for its great customer service (Media Markt, for you dutchies&germans.) and I didn't get a chance to use NVFlash. (By the time I heard about the idea, the first update had already auto installed. ) I'm also generally rather unlucky when it comes to electronics, stuff tends to break. And I need the tablet for work, so I can't afford to have it send out for repair for weeks if I mess up.
@ShadowLea
I have exactly the same problem as you, but Media Markt isn't good for repair?
Must I unfreeze all system apps before the update?

Yes, you must unfreez all system. Any modification to properties (build.props) file also needs to roll back. The device must be in the "stock" condition or update will failed.

Unlocked bootloader and installed TWRP, I first installed the wrong version of TWRP which had no touch input and had to force a reboot, this is the one that works for me:
http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/tf300t/openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.0-tf300t-4.2.blob
Thanks for being a good test bunny for me
Backing up my Smart Tab now and will see if any of the roms work.
*Update*
Tested the CM 10.1 experimental and the CROMi-Xenogenesus 4.4.1.
CM 10.1 boots and all but touch input is weird, the "Show touches circle" is persistent and input is like using a mouse; I have to drag the circle around and double click for a single click. I tried the latest two versions and had the same issues.
CROMi boots and doesn't suffer from the touch weirdness, but WiFi and Bluetooth are not working. I suspect if I were to pull libs from the ME301T stock I will be able to get them to work in this rom but I'm done testing for now.

I want to start building some CM10.1 and other TF300 ports. But I cannot seem to find out how to get a system dump that is needed for the porting. I can copy /system to my computer, but it seems like there should be more needed than just pulling that in order to do a proper port.
Maybe it is just a matter of copying /system for the needed dump, but if anyone can shed some light on that for me it'd be a great help!
To simplify this process for everyone I wrapped up all the the necessary tools, images, drivers, etc for getting your ME301T unlocked in a single rar file. This works as of 5-13-2013, I'll update it as needed when people report problems with any of the included stuff.
I cannot stress enough that I am not personally responsible for any of this work, I simply combined it for simplicity. Please follow the links below to thank the dev's that did all of the hard work for their time!
The rar file contains:
*Contains drivers for ME301T for Windows (From Asus)
*Contains motochopper, root solution for ME301T (from djrbliss, http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/15208-root-motochopper-yet-another-android-root-exploit-412/)
*Contains necessary files and brief instructions for bootloader unlock (from philos64, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1697227)
*Contains boot image for TWRP (from eyeballer, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1672108)
Again please thank the original devs!
The link for the rar file is:

Edit: Updated 6-10-2013 as the previous link was not working.

Price check?

Hello everyone. I just wanted to check to make sure im getting a good deal here. Someone is on their way to me with a 32gb tf300 with dock, car charger, and boxes in supposedly near perfect shape. Is $280 usd still a good deal for a 32gb version? They will be here in an hour so any quick feedback is appreciated
Also, I know the screen isnt as good as the tf201 which I previously owned, but ill primarily be using it indoors to watch netflix on rather than my note 2. Im going to guess its more than fine for that purpose right? Ill likely be NRGizing it

Oh well. Bought it anyway. I'm surprised no one chimed in though. Seems like 280 to my door delivered was good enough. Just unlocked the BL / flashed twrp / and am running NRG on it

Thats exactly what I was looking for. I wasnt sure how much the 16 and 32gb are going for Looks like I did get a deal indeed as mine is the 32Gb model ! Right now im running NRG's rom though. It was fully updated to 4.2 when I got it but luckily I found the TWRP specific to it that worked. I may take the time today and downgrade it though. Im not sure if its the BL or what but this thing is terribly laggy. It was worse with Cromix than with nrg's. Ive read everywhere that people recommend doing the fastboot downgrade to 4.1 ( to get 4.1's bootloader i assume ).
Thanks all for your input

When i buy any electronic device on craigslist, i use the manufacturer's method for wiping it completely clean and starting over. For you, that would be factory reset from TWRP (include wiping internal sdcard) fastboot the latest official blob file from asus, flash TWRP and then install the ROM of choice. You never know what the other guy did with/to it :/

/agree.
Already done my friend When I first got it, it was bone stock but fully updated to 4.2. Stock worked smooth but Cromi and NRG seemed to jitter / hiccup when i FINALLY got twrp working. Im thinking it had something to do with the bootloader and rom combo. I just used FB and went to 4.1 and installed TWRP 2.4.4.0 as that seems to be the combination that works well. Im currently downloading Cromi again to give it another go. What kernel are you using ?
Right now im sitting on stock 4.1.1 build 10.4.2.20 with TWRP 2.4.4.0

Im running the Stock moddified 10.6.1.15.3 kernel on my own ROM. Granted there is SOME jitteryness, but in all honesty, it more than likely is the app. Facebook especially, it tries performing background tasks to update your news feed, and im not sure whats with them but they fail to use the dual core and higher of the device. 99 percent of the devices are dual core or higher, i find facebook to only wanna use the main core -.- causing the most amount of lag.

I think for now I will use stock rooted 4.1.1 with Unters Kernel. It seems to run pretty smooth. Much better than any other alternatives ive tried so far. Why did Asus have to make things difficult >.> Roms specific to bootloaders..... ugh

Sometimes that is just the way things have to be I don't mind it, downgrading is very easy!

True enough..... twas the same with my tf201 if I remember correctly ( or tf101...... i forget LOL ). Anyway, Im glad I picked this thing up. Its not as bright as my TF201 ( obviously ), but the wifi is a million times better and thats after I soldered stronger antenna to the board >.> I damn near made an external mod on it but decided to dump it instead. The note 2 has been amazing

TF300 and Android 4.3

The only thing i really see useful in the latest version for the tf300 is the OpenGL update, and notification update.
Any thoughts?

the tegra 3 doesn't support opengl es 3, not a lot going on with 4.3, tried it on my tf700 and went back to stock 4.2 about 15 minutes later, more waiting for my phone to get cm 10.2

TRIM will be the most useful feature for our device
Well there are a few improvements:
- New way of multi-user accounting (i.e. grant access to apps to users). Those apps can be installed from the owner account. So no need to install common apps multiple times.
- Google has improved graphic perfomance by re-ordening draw commands in a more efficient way
- Improved security. SELinux is implemented. This also a down side because the standard way of root needs to be changed. The CM team is working on that.
For me personally the improved multi-user is a big welcome. This way i do not have to share my Play account that is coupled with my creditcard with the account of my daughter. And i can give her access to only the apps that we think she can use.
==================
I have a working build of CM10.2. There are still things that needs adressing. So i hope that xplodwild has time to look at those things.
Things that need adressing:
- Video playing needs fixing. HD does not work yet
- root is not working as it should. Titanium backup does not restore and just hangs.

Yeah we are on Android 4.4 now. Heres an install guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48508679&postcount=7
You must be on the latest 4.2 bootloader to install this though.
