Yes, to have a root on you phone you should unlock it first. I don't know which guide is really good you can start from here

find out if you have a S4 or S3 version of this phone
S4 unlock root custom rom thread

S3 version

Edit:
Got nervous thinking about someone new to this and flashing the wrong thing.
Z520e is S4
Z560e is S3
You can find it on you Box
in the ONE S Android Development thread you will find S4 Roms, RUU's Recovery's and so on.
in the ONE S C2 Android Development thread you will find the S3 compatible one's.
there, conscious cleared.
from the wiki: regarding Why some phones have the different processor S3
In certain markets, such as Taiwan,[10] India,[11] and some European (usually Eastern European) markets, the One S uses the older Snapdragon S3 MSM8260 SoC, with a 1.7 GHz dual-core Scorpion CPU and Adreno 220 GPU.[12] In some markets, both devices are available, notably the UK. The change is speculated to be caused by a shortage of Snapdragon S4 chips.[13] The two versions have slightly different packaging, the S4 is model Z520e/Z520m and states "Processor: Dual Core, 1.5GHz"/"CPU Speed 1.5 GHZ, dual core, whereas the S3 is model Z560e and states "Processor: Dual Core".

CleanROM 4.1 for One X

I'm kinda new on these forums so first of all - hi! Just got the One X (the International version with nVidia's Tegra 3), unlocked the bootloader and installed the twrp recovery 2.2.0 but I don't know if I can install the CleanROM 4.1 for the AT&T because it is for the One X with the S4 chip and not the Tegra one, if some one could be kind enough to help me out I would be really grateful!
Cheers!
unfortunately no. Wont boot.
better off sticking w/ the international rom forum.
International forum is best bet...
My "WCX" dominated HTC One X
Thank you for being smart enough to ask BEFORE flashing and (potentially) soft bricking your phone!

[Q] Please help me with my AT&T HTC ONE XL...about unlock&root.

Well, I got a AT&T HTC ONE X( it's xl actually ).:victory:
I need to ROOT that.It said that if I want to root that.I need to unlock that first. So I try to unlock the phone by HTCDEV.
One click root not work.
One click unlock not work.
Then there came a error with a error code 160. MID ERROR.
Well, then I read some materials and know that unlocking the phone need to root first...
Okay, now I have been totally confused with that.......
Anyone can tell me how to deal with that?
Oh, my version is 2.20.502.7 710RD.
It said that it is a root-available version?
Please help me , I am not so familiar with them.

If you really searched you would simply have to type HTC one x 2.20 root and find that it is unrootable yet
Hi lucentworld
You don't need root to get a custom rom onto your phone. Once you follow the HTCDEV instructions, then you can unlock the bootloader.
Once the bootloader is unlocked, the phone is unlocked to be able to put whatever custom recovery on it you want
Once you have a custom recovery installed then you can put whatever custom ROM on it you wish.
Just because 2.20 is unrootable, this means you cant get root on the standard ROM. But once the bootloader is unlocked, that ROM goes in the bin anyways.
The HTCDEV way DEFINITELY works. I did it on my sisters One XL telstra without rooting first, she was on the latest unrootable ROM.
Good luck

Thanks for your insult. Hope you get banned for your rudeness.
I did not know ATT blocked unlocking. Here in Australia, we don't have such anal carriers. I was able to unlock my sisters One XL by the HTCDEV way. I was simply mentioning the way that I achieved unlocking. Nice overreaction.
Damn, after reading the guides myself. It looks like you are pretty screwed if you have the ATT One X on that version. I was a bit thrown by the mention of One XL. Here in Aus, we have the One X (international tegra quad core) and the One XL (qualcomm dual core). Its a little less confusing, One X = quad core One XL = dual core. It seems in the states, you have ATT One X = dual core, Rodgers One XL, and International One X

Sorry I had to wake up to do hw and pretty tired...so both versions are in Australia? Why didn't you go with the tegra.?
seuppt hollow
LOL, no probs dude,
The Telstra ver. has LTE
And 3G coverage that covers most of the country
Vodafone, Optus and virgin are left with the One X (tegra)
I am happy with the performance and battery life of the One XL, the missus has a Tegra One X, and I really cant tell the difference. Both were just as hard to Root/Unlock
Good Luck OP :good:
So the only thing I can do is to wait for a method to root the 2.20?
Damn AT&T...00

[Q] Can I get HELP rooting & roming at&t One X

I am currently just having trouble rooting my HTC ONE X for AT&T and I was wondering if anyone had good step by step instructions with links or a recommended video for the current ICS software (January 17th 2013) and the same with the steps to flash a rom such as Cyanogenmod 10.
-thank you

that should be enough to get you started.
Also, make very sure you flash for the right device (their are four devices called "One X", there is a dual core snapdragon with LTE (evita - X/XL), a quad core tegra without LTE (1.5GHz endeavor - X, or 1.7Ghz endeavor C2 - X+), and the quad core tegra 3 with LTE (1.7GHz evitare - X+). This retarded naming scheme has been responsible for many paperweights.
If you have any more questions, it is much better to ask them before you start flashing.

[Q] ViperX/XL

So right off the bat I have very little knowledge of rooting and flashing roms. I did however successfully unlock, root and flash CM10 onto my AT&T HOX a few months ago. I want to try out the ViperX rom but after reading the install instructions I noticed that I needed to have HBOOT 1.31 or higher and I have 1.14. The only way to get the higher HBOOT is to have a compatible CID # from what I can tell mine isnt on the list included in the link that they posted. Is it really required? What would be my options if I wanted to change to the ViperX/XL Rom?
Thanks in advance!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2087443
you might be in the wrong forum what phone do you have one x or one xl viper x is for the international version while viper xl is for the one xl
You are trying to link ViperX in the Development forum for the Tegra 3 quad core version of the One X (ENDEAVORU). Completely different hardware. Flash anything for that version, and you might brick your phone. If you are on any forum page that doesn't say "AT&T" in the forum title, you are in the wrong place (quad core forum).
You want ViperXL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1868236
Thats the help I was looking for thanks guys appreciate it!

Am I a C2, S3 or a S4

I'm having a hard figuring out which one I am. I'm pretty sure I'm not a S3. My device is a armv7 at 1.5g. Still trying to figure this out.... >_>

Just a One S. You do not have an S3 processor, as the S3 processor is clocked at 1.7GHz (but is actually worse). So you have an S4 processor, which would be under One S Android Development. One S C2 Android Development is for S3 devices.
If you're looking for a root + S-OFF tutorial I can direct you to that too, as well as superCID to allow you to flash unbranded/any firmwares.

Thank you very much for confirming this.
I actually already unlocked the boot loader and gained root and achieved S-Off. But thank you for your time to help and confirming.
Quick question. So I can't flash C2roms on a S4 and no S3roms on a S4. Only S4roms to S4 correct? Ik for sure S3 won't work at all. Not 100% on C2 but I'm sure it won't work either since a C2 has different specs right?.

Correct. You can only flash S4 ROMs on your S4 device.
And by the way, 'S3' is the same as 'C2'.
There are 2 different devices: VILLE (has an S4 CPU at 1.5GHz) and VILLE C2 (has an S3 CPU at 1.7GHz).
