[Q] Will Mr. Parkinsons DroidHD Utility 2.0 work with 9.18.79 - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to get my phone back to unroot and stock. I have been looking through everything and have tried using RSD Lite and flashing the latest SBF from SBF Developers but had no success. Had a couple things go wrong - First it said it was downgrading security, then two errors. update tz version failed and preflash validation failed for tz.
Here's my question: I'm wondering if Mr. Parkinsons DroidHD Utility will work but I noticed it is for Fastboot Restore 9.16.6 4.1.2 Stock Jelly Bean and I am on the latest OTA which I believe is 9.18.79 XT926.
I was going to try matts utility but it says not to use with the latest ota.
If anyone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

it doesnt have the latest update on it, so no you cant use it, unless your bootloader is unlocked then you can flash whatever no problem.

I do not have a unlocked bootloader so I guess I won't be doing that. Do you know of any other way to get it back to stock?

If you are rooted, the OTA will fail, so you have to flash back to stock before taking OTAs.
If you are locked and you take an OTA, you will lose access to whatever exploit was patched. In the case of going from JB to KK, the original root (Saferoot I believe) won't work. However, Towelroot will work for those that have locked bootloaders.
However, if you are rooted and on the latest official KK, then you can unlock your bootloader and then, no matter what OTA comes out after that, you will still be able to root your phone without the use of an exploit like Towelroot. Instead, you take .zip image of the SU app you are using and flash it in TWRP or CWM recovery. No exploit needed.
Towelroot is only for those that don't have an unlocked bootloader and it's an exploit (a security issue) within the specific version of the Android OS. OTAs patch these as they are released, which means another exploit has to be discovered in order to achieve root for locked bootloaders.
So, right now, if you are not unlocked, you better unlock on the initial KK release because the latest soak test does patch Towelroot and the bootloader exploit. You've been warned.

[Q] Droid Maxx 4.2.2 sunshine unlock, how to get to 4.4.4?

So i held out taking the otas for a while to avoid losing root and am still on 4.2.2 post camera update. I know, it's sad, but I have root so i haven't been dying to update.
However, i just saw that sunshine will unlock my bootloader, which I'm going to do. What I'm confused about though is once i unlock my bootloader, how do I get to 4.4.4? Can I just revert everything to stock and take all of the otas (and then flash twrp to get root)? I heard that something in one of the otas changed something with the bootloader, so i don't know if taking that would cause problems with an unlocked bootloader or make me lose my unlocked status. Either way, could i just flash a 4.4.4 image directly from 4.2.2? If so where do i get a stock image to flash? Thanks for any help!
Once you have successfully unlocked, make sure you are status 3 unlocked in fastboot.
Once confirmed, you can use the rsd lite, and use the stock firmware from:
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/
Next, flash twrp for the ghost from their website.
Lastly if you want root flash supersu.
So can I flash a different OS version from the site that you linked? Or is that just to return to stock in anticipation of flashing TWRP and using that to flash a later android version?
rule of thumb is you cannot downgrade, only upgrade or revert to the same version you are already on
This seemed like the easiest route to a rooted 4.4.4... Unlock bootloader via Sunshine, and proceed as instructed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-ultra/general/unlocked-boot-xt-1080-restore-4-4-4-pre-t2883131
Data remains intact, unlocked bootloader warning on boot logo fixed, and TWRP (or Philz) flashed as recovery. Super easy. Good times.
Deleted. Redundant post.

I'm in the same situation. I'm currently rooted on the post camera update and held off on the new ota's for a while. I want to do the sunshine unlock. My question is should I do the sunshine unlock, upgrade to the newest 4.4.4 then install twrp to root? This youtube.com/watch?v=_xVyJMtLDPgvideo gives pretty good instructions but I also want to take future OTA's. I understand you won't be able to unless you put the recovery back to stock.
Thanks in advanced

Yep true. Can't take OTAs with out stock recovery. But it is easy to flash Stock Recovery then back to TWRP after the OTA. Of course safest option is to flash stock fxz without wiping data before taking OTAs.
Personally have my own recovery and logo.bin script I keep for just this reason. Run RSDlite with the stock software take OTA (if no fxz yet for the OTA) then full bit and setup and finally flash the recovery and logo.bin I use.
Many ways of doing it just find its easier for me this way probably cause this is how I learned from trial and error is all. Probably an easier way though.

Unlock/Root/TWRP OTA updates?

I've only had two phones prior to this but I have always unlocked the boot loader / rooted the device / installed a custom recovery / installed custom ROMS.
I believe with my MOTO X 1st gen this disabled the OTA updates.
Is that the case with the Honor 8? I'm wondering if it is worth it to install TWRP at this point as there seems to be so little in the way of kernels and ROMS.
Would I still be able to use SU or Xposed modules without Root?
What is the best move with this phone?
I have unlocked my bootloader as well as rooted my Honor 8. The only way to get SU and Xposed is by doing both of these procedures(root involves getting TWRP).
As for any Xposed modules, I tried amplify+greenify but instead of getting better battery life, my standby time decreased significantly. I am not sure why, but for some reason my Cell standby was showing to be eating a ton of my battery. Another big problem was that the dialer app would not let me call anyone, it kept crashing whenever I tried to. Both problems were fixed after I managed to get amplify+greenify uninstalled. Currently I am just running YouTube AdAway and MinMinGuard which seem to work fine.
So at this point, is it worth unlocking bootleader, installing TWRP, and rooting your phone? Well if there are certain Xposed modules that you really want then sure, and if there are certain apps you like that require root, then yes go ahead and root your phone. Note that if you try any OTA updates, you will have to remove TWRP as having your phone automatically restart and try to install the update wont work.
Imagine that the Honor 8 receives an update to say, Nougat, what is the pathway to update for someone who has rooted their phone. Will the OTA be able to be flashed if a .zip is provided here? Would we need to flash an entirely new ROM?
This is what I faced with my MOTO X. When Marshmallow came out there was talk... but no one was working on the at phone any longer so was never able to update.

It doesnt matter whether or not your phone is rooted. You will get updates the same way, through OTA. Of course you can find .zip files to flash(although personally I am struggling to get the latest update flashed through TWRP).
The real question is for how long will we be receiving updates? Nougat is pretty much guaranteed with the new EMUI update. Huawei/Honor has promised up to 2 years of updates from what I have heard, but who knows what that actually means. They have also have a "partnership" with XDA, and the phone is decently popular so I am sure there will be a few roms, just not as many as say a OP3.
Why are people trying to flash via TWRP if the OTA updates still work after rooting and unlocking the boot loader?

Okay so I just figured it out, but for the OTA update to work after rooting and having a non-stock recovery, you need to go to Settings->Updater->Menu(located on the bottom)->Download latest full package.
The full package is ~1.6GB and the regular update is ~280mb. The full package will work even if you have TWRP installed. But if you want the regular 280mb update, you need to get rid of TWRP and go back to a stock recovery.
Of course you will need to reinstall TWRP and root your phone again after doing this update.

I am not sure what you mean. Do you mean you can see the text "Download latest full package" but it is greyed out? If so please check to see if you arent currently at the latest version. If there is another problem, you might want to try to find a .zip of the full package and flash it that way.

No I am in the US. I am not sure about the EU version, but yes if you can find a .zip update file just put it on your phone and go into TWRP to install it. Might wanna make a backup too and wipe cache too just in case.
So if i download the full package in update and install it, bootloader will still be open? No full wipe? And later i only need to install twrp and root the phone again?

Updating or wiping your phone does not lock the Bootloader. The only way to lock the Bootloader again is by doing it manually yourself.
Yes after doing a full update you will need to reinstall TWRP as it will be replaced with the stock recovery and then re-root your phone again.
Rakeen70210, you sound really confident about doing full updates after rooting. Will these full updates also replace the kernel?
palendrome87 and NAS420 could you guys report back with any success or errors you have flashing full updates?
Where can one download full updates for Honor 8?

Seeing as how the full update package was ~1.65GB in size, I think its ok to assume that it replaces everything with the stock Honor 8 image. So yes it will replace the kernel too.
For downloading full updates, the only way I got mine was an OTA directly from the phone itself. Look at my previous comments to see how I got this update. If for some reason you cant update, check if your model is ready for an update. If it is and you cant update, try to flash back to a stock image. You should be able to find one on this site or anywhere else.

No, the only way to lock the bootloader is to manually lock it yourself using a similar operation to unlocking it.

I thought the same thing, but after taking the full OTA update my bootloader was locked again. If you want to update I would suggest first making a full backup to the external SD card in TWRP.
Then , its better to download à full update ( update.zip) ,copy to root of the phone , reboot in twrp and flash it ? Anyone already did it ?

Do you have stock recovery or did you install TWRP? Have you ever mounted /system read/write?
To take an OTA (besides flashing it in TWRP and the firmware seperate) you need stock recovery and an untouched /system image.

When you downgrade back to lower stock, you have to omit gpt.bin command. Because you have a newer bootloader.
This is also why you can't take OTA. Because it tries to install a different bootloader (which is probably still older than what you had with custom ROM). If you wanted stock 5.0.2 again, you have to flash full stock image and omit the gpt.bin command.
Are you able to use volume and power button to the bootloader screen?

OK, then that's the bootloader you were on and will always be on. You need to reflash that latest version (with the security update) to repair. Just reflash the entire full firmware.
There's a link to it here in this forum. I'll find it when I get home, if you don't have it.
Then in the future, if you try to downgrade, you always have to flash full stock version EXCEPT you omit the gpt.bin file. Whether 4.4.4 Kitkat or 5.0.2 Lollipop.
And you can never take OTA.
Because you really have 6.0.1 bootloader.

This is the most likely because all the methods say so old and not one was and when I try to pass any old stock also will not always get that error in the bootloader in the gptbin downgrade logs

You can not flash any older gpt.bin files. You have to omit (leave out) that flash command.
Your gpt.bin file is 6.0.1, and you cannot downgrade. Even on 4.4.4, trying to accept the 5.0.2 OTA update is still older gpt.bin file in that OTA than your 6.0.1.

Face first you're a myth. I just passed gpt.bin and got the bootloader ... I'm very happy. Do I need to pass the entire rom ??
