My Motorola Triumph keeps randomly rebooting and the battery goes from 90% to 7% suddenly sometimes. I had the phone for a week so far and the frequence of restarts is increasing. I don't have any task killer app.
Is it some software that I am using or it's a hardware issue? Do you think I should have the phone replaced by Virgin Mobile?

Try charging it all the way and using cwm to wipe the battery stats. That should fix the battery drain. The reboots I would try wiping Dalvik, cache, and last first data if the first 2 wipes don't help at all.

I just figured out the problem has to do with wifi. When I turn it off and use 3G instead the mobile becomes stable (so far). Is anyone facing the same problem or it's just me? Is there a fix?
Does it have a custom ROM on it? I've seen around the forums that there has been issues with the MT and wifi on the ROMs

No. But the frequency of the reboots increased after I re-installed the original MT stock ROM.
When I first bough the device it restarted once or twice a day. Now it reboots non stop unless I take out the battery. I re-installed the stock ROM from another source but the problem persisted. The problem goes away when I turn off wifi abut comes back when I turn it on.
Sounds like something to do with the kernel, not the ROM... maybe. I had horrible luck with any and all custom kernels for a long while. Although that's just my luck, might not be yours...
Looks like you had a problem from the beginning... Try everything stock, and if it's still there, return it... Wow my first post in years...
I know someone who had the same problem..
switched to the iPhone 4s...
Same here...
Me too...
I have this problem as well. I am going to try the CM7 mod to see if that goes away. I have also isolated it to WiFi.
Problem solved!

Wohooooooooooooo The problem DOES go away with CM7 beta 8 !!!! It's like magic!
Phone no longer reboots randomly
Wifi is stable and does not disconnect or cause the phone to reboot or the battery to heat up
And battery life improved 300%!!! I now charge it every other day with moderate 3g/wifi usage!
I had CM7 for three weeks so far and my frustration turned into happiness! It's just amazing how changing the software makes a HUGE difference!! Before CM7 I always felt like smashing my MT because of the hard time it gave me!
I followed the instructions on: http://www.motorolatriumphhacks.com/
i am having the same problem.I am running cm9 with latest update, out of know where my phone started rebooting on its own or while i was doing something or playing a game and it is doing it more and more. What should i do.

as far as ive seen with both cm7 and cm9, random reboots houldnt be an issue anymore, but for other still having the issue it usually comes from about 4 things over the rest
1. faulty hardware, which normally isnt the case, if faulty hardware was the issue you'd probly be seeing more then random reboots, but its still possible
2. Rom didn't take correctly during flash, either by chance, or because the phone wasent properly cleared and now settings are "head butting"
3. Running a custom rom in which you can adjust the cpu and the settings are either to low or to high, both can cause reboots
4. Most common one ive seen by far outta them all, Apps, certain apps especially after some updates will "play tricks" on the device and for some reason cause reboots sometimes, usually the next update of said app will resolve the issue but not always, so if you find an app thats the culprit you can notify that apps developer
you can always try and go back to 100% stock and see if the issue is still there but if your like me you probly hate the stock froyo by now lol
It may seem painful or whatnot but unless you find exactly what may be causing the reboots the best bet overall would be
Do a complete Fresh install of whatever rom you use, dont flash anything besides the rom and gapps if needed, also dont restore any backups yet, just to be sure
Once the fresh new rom is booted i turn the phone off then back on for safe measures lol
Now if you can lol try running the phone with No aftermarket apps besides any/if any that came on the rom, if the problem is gone you know for sure here that it was one of your apps
then 1 by 1 install your apps and give it some time in between app installs to see if the problem comes back and hopefully this way if it does youll know which app is causing troubles
FAQ
To quote directly from my FAQ,
"Reboots on Android are a pain, and can be attributed to multiple sources. I’ve been able to successfully reduce the amount of reboots that I get, but never eliminate them… Anyhow, here’s some troubleshooting information:
1. Format SD card in Windows (back up your SD card data first!) Make sure you format to FAT32. Don’t try formatting it in Linux. I have done this before and the phone wouldn’t boot up!
2. Slightly overclocking prevents some freezes.
Under Settings > Cyanogenmod Settings > Performance overclock the max speed to around 1300-1400ish. This should speed the phone up, but not to the point of the thing overheating
3. Fix SD Card permissions. Do this by booting into Recovery (You can do that if you have this ROM installed) and go to advanced > Fix SD card permissions. Now reboot.
4. Do not use Firefox, except the Nightly builds. Firefox has went through drastic speed and performance improvements recently, but the older builds, despite being called stable, are so slow, they will make the phone freeze and reboot. Yes, this includes Aurora. UPDATE: All Firefox versions except stable (ironic, eh?) have been used by me personally and have not made my phone reboot. Make sure you’re on at least version 14. (This one doesn't apply as much anymore, I need to update my FAQ!)
5. Give the phone a break from time to time. After intensive gaming for hours on end, the phone will often reboot while exiting a game.
That’s all the tips I have. I managed to drastically reduce my reboots by doing these, but not eliminate them completely. I hope g60madman or mantera find some hidden timeout value in the kernel (if one exists, like the auto reboot on BSOD in Windows) and either lengthens the timeout value or disables automatic rebooting so if this is a kernel panic, we may see the debugging details and upload them to fix some crashes.
6. Make sure that you have the VM heap size set to be adequate enough. I recommend at least 24 MB, preferably anywhere from 32 MB and up if you want the phone to last a while without rebooting.
7. Sometimes a cache wipe and dalvik cache wipe are needed to stop bootloops. Unfortunately, every once in a while, you may start getting bootloops. This usually due to some sort of corruption in the cache or dalvik cache. You can safely clear them through Clockworkmod Recovery without loosing any data, and this usually fixes the problem. If not, do a factory reset through Clockworkmod Recovery and reinstall this ROM."
Hi,
I m very interested in install the official 10.2 CyanogenMod based in android 4.3, but is in Nightly phase, i am wondering how much time can take to reach a more stable version, and if is posible to follow the changes, issues and fixes in the daily releases.
I hope someone can give me orientation, thx in advance.
Of course you can. Head over to the thread Nardholio started in the Development section.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2405310
The first post has links to: the official CM site and to the Apex Github. The CM site has a changelog for nightlies. On the Apex Github, they maintain a list of known issues.
It's all there.
I caution you on expectations here. Android 4.4 was just announced with a very unfortunate name. I think Jelly Bean 4.3 has about 60 days to live. It would be silly to expect 10.2 to be stable by then. After 4.4 hits Nexus devices, I bet the Apex guys will shift their focus to 4.4 and we will repeat some of this process...

it will probably never happen.
android 4.4 is just around the corner, so i guess the focus will be swapped on that, as it was for 4.3 and 4.2 before
CyanogenMod will do a final "release" build when 10.2 is EOL which will be the most stable we can make it. We also have a last 10.1 build we consider mostly stable, although it is unofficial. Right now 10.2 does have some stability issues, but most of these will be worked out (there are some bugs in our firmware we will not be able to fix until/if Samsung updates the firmware)

I have random freezes/reboots all the time on the official nightlies -- even the ones people claim are stable. The lockscreen freezes quite often too. Are these known issues or am I just a lucky one? I am running CWM and followed the installation instructions on the Cyanogenmod wiki.
I just installed alogerec and hopefully something will show up to troubleshoot my issue.
Problem with 10.2 nightly as well
I have a problem with the 10.2 nightlies I have tried (all from this week) that I emailed Narholio as he requested.
But since I am a n00b and cannot post to development threads yet I could not post details there. I have not done extensive testing because the screen stays black even though the buttons light up when I try to unlock the phone. I can usually get it to display by pressing the lock button again to lock it, then pressing it again to unlock it right away. This also seems to happen only after the phone has been locked for greater than 20 seconds. If the screen timeout happens, or if press the lock button to lock it, the display almost always works if I unlock it again before 20 seconds is up.
I have not noticed any reboots or other problems, but have not used it extensively because of the black screen problem.
Try http://ls.infernix.net/jenkins/job/apexq-staging/ build 336

I flashed build 336 last night and still have my phone lock up when trying to unlock it. This doesn't happen every time but when it does it either shows the back and menu buttons illuminated with a black screen or an unresponsive lock screen. In either case it will eventually reboot.

I also still have the same problem with 336 you linked. I'm running it right now and posting this using it. I have had no reboots or other problems yet, but the black screen while trying to unlock it still plagues an otherwise really great experience. I love the speed and feel of it
I've seen that problem w/ the freezing while trying to unlock when the phone is OOM. If you can actually get it to unlock after that, check your apps memory usage.
Good idea

Thanks for the suggestion. Checking memory is a good idea, although I really don't have any apps at all installed. Didn't even install gapps when I flashed this time.
Is there a preferred way to check for free memory? Terminal command?

Personally, I always forget to close browser tabs and OOM that way. Check in Settings -> Apps -> Running
Look at the apps you use as well.
When Android was introduced, they rolled it out with a set of guidelines called the application life cycle.
In the document, Google specified how to develop applications and what was available. One option for devs that is powerful is running a thread as a service. It was a feature that was supposed to be used sparingly... (A service is a program that runs all the time--unless the kernel panics and shuts down everything.)
Unfortunately, developers know that Google isn't going to do anything to push them to make quality software. The market is supposed to sort it out.
In many cases, this is not working. People are taking advantage of the lack of QA.
Bottom line: App devs are building software that leaves services running in the background all the time--for no good reason, whatsoever. Many of these services are just there to slurp up your data and send it to their servers so they can sell it.
Holding the back button to fix it? That rarely works. The devs have intentionally built their memory wasting crapware to restart the service if it gets shut down.
Plenty of free memory

Yep, did wipe each time I tried multiple recent nightly versions which all do the same thing. The only one I've tried that works correctly is the 20130309 version.

I generally keep a tab open to this Relay forum so I can watch what's happening, but not many tabs. Also happens immediately after flashing, without even running any apps, much less installing any.

I really haven't installed any. And when testing different nightlies I just flashed and it happens right away, didn't install a thing on them.
I decided to stay on a version for a while, so have had 20130920 since Friday, and I've used it long enough to know it is consistent. I have found another way to make it happen: incoming phone calls. When phone wakes that way it almost always happens as well. Today it finally showed the screen when I received a call, but 3 or 4 other calls the screen has just been black so I can't tell who's calling.
I discovered another thing since using this ROM for 6 days. Sometimes I get lines/bars/tearing on screen that won't go away until I lock and unlock the phone again.
I have some other phones that are broken, if I can fix one of them I might consider sending this one to a dev to temporarily play with since it seems to be the perfect test case for this problem. The screen is cracked (I got it used in this condition), which I would normally suspect to be the cause of the problem, however since it does not have either problem with stock ICS, stock JB, or the 20130309 CM I'm pretty sure it's related to something in CM10.2. Just new enough to Android I'm not sure how to track it down.
Thank you all for your help!
I have one of these "rev0 cpu" phones and just recently went back to the stock firmware (ugh) because of the lockscreen wakeup lockups. I have gone 3 days so far with no issues. Until this issue is troubleshot, this is an option for anybody who needs stability with one of these phones. I miss CM very much though.

I also have a rev0 cpu phone, and I had a few lockup/reboots since I finally dove in last Monday (9/30) with Staging build 341. However, without me changing anything (still on the same build), they seem to have stopped. Last one I got was 10/2.
Edit: until just now. *facepalm*

I got sick of stock so I tried CM again. After flashing the 10.2-20131014-NIGHTLY-apexqtmo nightly I have not had one reboot or lockup in days. YMMV
Edit: Still haven't had a lockup on wake or reboot.

Hmm... Sounds like I need to try again then. I tried one released after that and still had issues, but I will try to make some time later to try it. It is fantastic other than that problem.
newer nightlies
Anyone else having issues with the newer nightlies? I try to keep up with latest os, but 4.3 has me baffled. The first time I tried to install 4.3 was on Jellybam 10.2. I followed the instructions to the tee, but it didn't work. All 4.3 roms I've loaded I've never had a signal. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Now that all of the 4.3 roms have the custom recovery already on the rom, it still doesn't work. I have no signal. I thought about unrooting my sg3 and starting over, but that is a pain. So I'm basically stuck with 4.2.2. If anyone has anything to say about my problem please do so. Thanks

when you flash, co you clean flash? and what recovery are you using? This info would help in getting your questions answered.
i've been running Mastamoon's unofficial 10.2 (Android 4.3) nightlies (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2385652), and regularly flash back and forth between TW Roms as well and have never had any real data problems. sure, drops data every once in a great while, but Mastamoon puts a lot of work into cleaning up issues.
one thing: IF you flash, and you don't have data, did you wait more than a couple of minutes? Sometimes it takes a while on first flashes. Also, did you check what your status said? (menu >system settings >about phone >status? Also, check to insure your mobile network is set up correctly (menu >system settings >more > mobile network settings) and check your CDMA subscription is set to RUIM/SIM and NOT NV, and network mode is set to LTE/CDMA/EvDo sometimes during a bad flash, these can get hosed up.
like i said, i run Masta's unofficial version, and go in and out of data areas (no data in the subway tunnels) and it always goes right back.
give that a try, and if still having problems, add more information befor just saying "i don't get any data with any 4.3 rom

Good afternoon, and thanks for your help.
I wish I could give you more information, but I broke one of my cardinal rules about messing with my phone and didn't take notes. Suffice it to say I was trying a couple of different 4.3 ROMS in the forums, as well as the two available MIUI roms that were in there. I use TWRP.
I did wait quite a while before declaring no data, it has actually been a couple of days. It does show I have a signal, and I can get texts that are sent to me. When my wife tries to call my phone it goes right to voice mail, even when it does say I have a signal (4G, full bars). I also cannot send a text, it immediately goes to 'failed message'.
I tried setting my phone back to LTE/CDMA/EvDo, but I don't see an option for CDMA subscription. I wonder if I accidentally tried a Global ROM instead? All I am really looking for is some 4.2 love, I like what my daughters Nexus 4 has for lock screen widgets, and my Cleanrom installation is acting a little wonky now and again, so thought it was time to flash something new. Silly rabbit, trix are for kids.
Thanks again. Thinking of flashing a stock ROM and starting over. Any thoughts?

follow my last post; Mastamoon has his version of CM10.2 (4.3) running great, and is very quick at answers (during the week that is) as well a couple of other DEVs that follow that tread are always willing to offer help. AND he has a download app, that once you install will tell you when there is an update, give you a direct link to it, and after downloading, will check the MD5 to insure a good download.
providing you are on VZW that is.
I actually had this problem coming from hyper drive to dirty Unicorn. But i started out on the Droid X back in the day so I was used to it. While I don't know if this really works but it worked for me is do *22899 then *228# ( so the keyboard pops up ) i did it a few times also i turned it off the cell service and turned it back on using the toggle. While i dont know if that will do it it worked for me. I know LTE dont need do that because of the sim but it does for me in the hiccup.
A question i have that i cant post in the Dev Fourm because of lack of post. I been part of XDA for long time just never posted. But I'm running Dirty Unicorn and theres a option for fast charge but it does nothing. I've used this feature before and makes my car charger work better and home charging and my battery sucks now but does anyone know how to get it working? I've tried terminal did SU and FFC but nothing.
I'm running twrp recovery. I'm asuming the latetest version. And i do let it settle for a while. As for the settings you mentioned, everything is normal, and as it should be. The imei, meid, ect. Is normal. Thanks for the input.
I've fixed this by going full ODIN, putting a stock image back on, and following the instructions at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2066133 Seems to be working, it is no longer on roaming.

When I tried 4.2 and turned off data it completely killed my signal. None of my recoveries of 4.1.2 had signal. Flashing back to stock fixed the signal problem.
Hellfire and Dirty Unicorns have worked great for me since going to 4.3 and 4.3.1. I use cwm touch recovery but idk how much of an effect recovery has with flashing a rom successfully.
But this tool makes rooting, unlocking the bootloader, and recovery very simple and easy. (but I would flash the latest recovery after using the tool just in case)

I believe fast charge is kernel related and not because of a rom. I haven't ever used fast charge but all the kernel threads always list fast charge as a feature. But which DU build are you running?
Is anyone else running Cyanogenmod 11 M-releases on their Nexus 5?
I just got mine a week or two ago, and the first thing I did was unlock it and flash it to CyanogenMod 11. (M8 at the time)
I'm using the device encryption, because I'm a paranoid bastard (And I love the fact this phone is actually usable while encrypted, unlike my Nexus S), and I find it very crashy. Several times per day, seemingly totally random, often while entering into the keyboard, though sometimes while it's just in my pocket. I've been able to determine no rhyme or reason.
No error messages, no apps crashing, no force closes, just several times a day it'll just freeze and reboot. Data loss is a common occurrence. I've lost my WhatsApp! database several times now, and a few others as well.
Is this just me, or is CyanogenMod 11 this crappy for other people too? I can't find a way to prove to myself that this is a hardware problem, the Android Stability Test app just keeps going and going. I've been watching adb logcat during a crash, and nothing interesting is output. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?

Try without encryption. It's hardly useful and only causes issues on Android.

We'll have to disagree about the usefulness of encryption, (I like that if my phone is powered off, my data is PRIVATE until and unless my passphrase is entered) but I'll wipe the phone this eve, TRIM it, and get setup on it again without encryption.

Maybe it's useful if you have something important on your device, but really, if you do, it shouldn't be kept on your phone anyways.
On Android, encryption is nothing but trouble, maybe it doesn't cause issues right away, but eventually it'll cause many. If you really wanted to keep things secured then I don't see why you would unlock the bootloader, flash a custom recovery and install a custom ROM.

CyanogenMod has Privacy Guard, which is another feature I'm using, mostly with the aforementioned WhatsApp!, which has a list of permissions longer than my arm. I don't like it, but I need it for work.
I'll grant that the custom Recovery and ROM may slightly weaken the encryption (specifically an attacker could alter the ROM from Recovery), but even so having the encryption makes the phone a million times more resistant to data theft and tampering than not having it. It's worth noting that tweaking the ROM is the _worst_ an attacker could do. If I suspected such a thing had happened I could re-unlock the bootloader (which would wipe my data), and re-flash a known good Recovery and ROM. I'd lose my data, but even if the attacker had dumped the partition they still wouldn't have my key, and my data would still be private.
And the phone has crashed twice today. I'm going to repeat my original question - is anyone running Cyanogenmod 11-M on their Nexus 5, and if so is it stable? Should I be RMAing this phone, or should I try reverting it to stock first?

its more then likely the encryption. Disable it, re-flash and see what happens
No encryption. Wiped and trimmed the phone yesterday, now 4 crashes.
Try another ROM, see if it crashes. If it still does, flash factory images and see if it still does.
If so, RMA.
Nothing but trouble for me since upgrading to m9. I have been using the various M builds since March with no problems. M8 was fine. No device encryption for me. I tried turning it on and instead got stuck redoing the whole phone.
Now I get frequent crashing. I switched to the most recent nightly yesterday. Apps stopped crashing. However the os itself still crashes. Several times the screen wouldn't turn on after removing it from my pocket. The light was blinking so it definitely didn't just turn off. It also has stayed black after a few (but not all) phone calls. I've had to hard reset every time to recover.
Thinking about reverting to m8 backup. Willing to give it a few more nightie and see if it works out.
Where did you get it? I'm using the stable M9 snapshot off the CM site for hammerhead and it works pretty good.

Got it from the OTA update. Unfortunately I'm not experienced enough to know how to debug it or use proper logs. It could be that its an app I'm using combined with the most recent update...
Im using M9 snapshot too and i have not had 1 problem its been excellent
No problems for me on the M9 snapshot either. I'm coming up on 100 hours of uptime. Have you tried another kernel? I've always found that the stock CM kernel isn't the best. I'm using ElementalX 1..04 and it works pretty great.

+1. I installed another kernel (Chaos) for that reason and it's way faster.
OP: Maybe a bad flash? I would download M8 latest stable snapshot, and do OTA upgrade to M9. That's how I got mine.

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually have been using elemental and forgot to install it after the OTA. Will put that on now and see if it helps.

cyanogenmod is not what it used to be. it ALWAYS has one type of issue or another.

Yeah it'll never be like the GB days. There's either audio problems, crashes, or other random problems. It's sad because people are expecting it to be like it was in old days. CM is not for stability, you can quote me on that.

last four hours have been fine since adding elemental. Hopefully works in the long run. 8/18 nightly.

Just about any
This has been a pain in the butt because I've missed morning alarms just to find our my phone is sitting in the bright white screen of derp. This time I need to know, is this an issue for people in general or could this be a ROM issue?
HTC M8 used the $25 unlocking tool and slapped CM 12.1 on this beast. My advanced reboot menu is OFF in developer options. There is no fastboot or whatever from the stock ROM as far as I can tell. Nothing is pressing on the screen as its just face up on the ground. What can I do, what should I try?
EDIT (8/28/15): After trying a sense based rom the issue went away. Just followed the advice given below

Does this happen every night?
If it occurs often.. I would honestly just try flashing a Sense ROM for a few days and see what happens. At least you will know in a few days instead of pulling your hair out.
If it still reboots in Sense, probably a hardware problem
If it doesn't reboot anymore, probably a software glitch in CM
So after wondering "maybe the USB cable plugged into my wall charger causes it to somehow go to fastboot mode"... I just had a reboot at work. Had a youtube video open, I hit pause and turned off the screen, and slid the phone into my pocket. No sound, no vib no indications, 5 minutes later I check and find out that its in fastboot mode. So its not from the USB.
I'll try to install a Sense 7 ROM and see how that goes. Very frustrating.
The only other issue I have is GPS not updating quickly enough, it only catches my location approximately and only if WiFi is enabled even if its not connected...
I've only had issues with a bad boot.img, but i couldn't boot the ROM at all. I would try a different ROM & see if that is the issue

What ROM are you on? Just plan CM
Same issue here, running Candy ROM. Never see this before, it's almost made me miss my alarms.

Any luck with Sense ROMs?
It happened to Me while on BlissPop,and Sonic Open Kang when I had root,it would take two reboots to get my phone back running

I have the same problem. I seems to be completely random. It only happens when plugged in overnight. Also, I have to select reboot twice to get the phone to reboot. The first try doesn't work.
HTC M8 running The latest Candy ROM.

You say when you had root. Did it stop when you turned root off?

Did you install the right GAPPS package for that CM?
Did you fac reset before new OS install?
Fastboot was an option with KK, it is not an option with lollipop.
I use CleanRom 4.0 which is 5.0.1 based, no issues. Sense 6 based. Does not need GAPPS. If your gonna tryout other ROMs, I would try CR 4 for the M8. If it does not reboot auto like then maybe its the CM ver you used or maybe it did not load right. I like CR because it has been cleaned of all carrier software. Has only what you need to function as a phone and mini surf machine, lets you do the customization.
Hope you solve it.
luck

I'm on Candy ROM which I believe is based off 5.1.1 CM12.1. I flashed GAPPS only after the installation and did a full wipe beforehand. After sticking with a N6 so long I don't really like the Sense layout anymore.
The method I used as per CleanRom guide.
Get 2.8.5 TWRP installed, a must for lollipop.
Make a nandroid backup.
Get firmware for Android 5 installed, carrier dependent!
Factory reset from bootloader
Install Sense or AOSP rom android 5.x.x.
if Sense based your done, if AOSP based install GAPPS ver for your OS/rom
Installing lollipop without right FW could cause issues.
Installing FW can brick your device! so be sure its right one, and make sure you get a nandroid backup stored on your added sd card. More importantly do not just take my word, double and triple check all steps before you leap.
I'll be honest I haven't really tried anything because I don't want to go through the hassle of installing and using other ROMs. Mainly because I think it's hard, even though I know it isn't :silly:
I've been just kinda dealing with the occasional random fastboot reboots. Same thing I have to press reboot twice to reboot the phone, and it happens both when plugged in and charging and when just sitting idle in my pocket. But it's never happened while I was using the phone.

Flash another ROM, or reflash CM. Make sure you wipe first. It was probably a bad flash and something is bonked. It'll take you less than 30 mins. I bet that'll take care of your issue. Good luck.
After many months now of using a sense based rom I've yet to run into the fastboot reset problem. I'm going to switch back to CM this weekend and see where it takes me.
