Hello...World? - General Questions and Answers

Just wanted to take a second and introduce myself... to myself??? I made the transition to android last week after packing an iOS for the past few years even though I really wanted to get android so that I could design/implement/build/deploy my own stuff directly to the phone without having to jump through apple shaped hoops. My background is .net/delphi (daily) and java (every so often) so I figured I should be able to hit the ground running. However, before I start doing anything I wanted to run a few things by you all just to make sure I have read and understood everything as I should have.
I just got my AT&T GS4 and have verified using *#1234 that my firmware version is indeed the latest crappy "MF3" type, and as such I am left with two options (1) Root my phone without "loki-doki" ( i.e. the only way to revert changes/bad ROMs ) and pray or (2) dont...
I've seen a few posts of people confirming the root process works via the SD card, but then what? Are there any ROMs that are stable enough that you would recommend to someone who absolutely can not afford to brick their phone?
Any helpful advice will be greatly appreciated as I'm looking forward to start contributing to the cause as soon as possible.
thanks,
xda_n

Speaks for itself I think. I told them about all you geniuses here and invited them to check out the site. Hopefully something incredible will come of this...
i saw this a few days ago and it looks like it's going to be very interesting. i'm going to try it out because i hate having to use a stylus
Alot of what they are trying to accomplish has been done already via WAD and Mortscript.
Do not get your hopes up.
- You can not register in the forums since no activation mails are being sent out.
- If you report this to the only e-mail address I have found on the page you will get no reply.
- If you try to get in contact with the persons behind the project and the homepage you will get no reply
- No one is answering the comments made on the page
- No betaversions has been published as far as I understand it, only screenshots
This does not mean that I think that the whole thing is a scam or anything like that - just that for a project that is actively seeking betatesters they for sure are making it hard (impossible) for people to actually getting involved. Not to mention the fact how they handle bugreports for their own homepage.
I had no problems registering in the forums there, and the creators answered some technical questions yesterday. This project is very young, looks like it was only started this month. Give it some time, and if they decide to check this site out, I hope it can lead to a good thing and not have them be put off by scorn and doubt.
i had no problems registering either; i do not beleive it is a scam, they did not say they are going to charge people for the software/application.
Congrats! Inform the ones running the show then that many visitors have not been able to register since they do not reply to any e-mail or provide with any information as on why things are not working. And no, this is not just me - check the comments - there are a large number of people not being able to register.
And in my book - any project that does not respond to bugreports is in trouble.
Very awesome! I can't wait until its final release, thanks for sharing!

[TOOL] US Enabler 1.0

Now, I apologize in advance for this very...VERY ugly/horrific looking program, but I just whipped it together to save peoples time. I didn't really have too much time to make a typical 'qberty' styled GUI for this app, but it still does what it needs to do. Speaking of which.
The 'Unknown Sources' Enabler

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
(Don't ask about the background, i don't know why its purple )
This application runs on a windows pc. This application allows ANY user with ANY Android ROM with ANY Android phone to enable the 'Unknown Sources' option without physically going there to switch it on.
Why would you want to do that? Well, I first had the need to do this because of a certain ROM (Eagle Eye) that did not even have this option. So this application allows anyone without this option (or just wants to enable US a lot quicker) to do that nice and easy without having to sift through ADB's functions and SQLites confusion.
With an easy click this app will make the change on any android powered device.
Direct Download @ 0m3ga
If more people are actually interested in this a lot more, i will expand on it, depending on user feedback. Otherwise, there are no future release plans.
And also to the people wondering why I keep posting universal applications in this section of the forum. I have an HTC Magic 32A. So, I stick around here 98% of the time, so this is where i post 'em.
aaah, only windows version? hehe what about me and all linux users
Thanx for the tool man!
i'm uppping a patch for the rom today, which makes this tool not needed sorry

It wont be needed once you patch YOUR rom. But I have seen other people have this problem with some other roms.
Also, a linux version is possible, if more people want it.
sorry was not meant to be rude or anything, but yes it was meant that in eagle eye it's fixed in the rom now
Would this work on an official ROM? Say, to enable sideloading on a Samsung Captivate where this option isn't in the menus?

This will work on any ROM, any Device that supports ADB. As stated in the first post, all this does, is enable 'Unknown Sources' for people too lazy to go and enable it themselves or they don't even have that option.

Doubt about bootloader

Hello,
I'm interested in the Sensation, but i've readed the problem about the bootloader. My question is: do you think we will have an unlocked one? (official or not)
The custom recovery has saved me a lot of times
And how much time do you expect? (1 month, 1 year,2,never?) [i know it's a difficult question]
Did you even read the headlines of the other topics in here???

We could answer but unless we have an insider at HTC leaking info or are a developer it would all be purely speculation. You'd have a better chance at guessing how many grains of salt are in a shaker accurately than guessing when they will have it done.

Yes, but there are one saying that they have said that they will unlick it. Another saying the first one is a fake and another one with intructions about flashing one ROM using clockmodwork, but clockmodwirk uses a custom boot (i think). So i really didn't understand it.
It's more easy when you have been following the news for a while than just arrive
Sorry for the inconvenients
HTC have not made any statements on which current devices, if any, will get their bootloaders unlocked, so we don't know.

[MetroPCS] flash rip-off

<<PLEASE NOTE>> I am NOT endorsing this company.I just saw this ridiculousness on another forum (where I reported it as SPAM) and wanted to pass it on. These prices are outrageously high (Ex: $100 to flash a VZ iPhone4 and of course no data/mms) and I'm hoping other people who are trying to flash over to Metro aren't getting duped by these types of companies:
Below is a link (sorry if you have to cut and paste it) to phones they have in their inventory. they are already flashed to MetroPCS and are for sale (for waaay too much money)>> Go ahead and click the "FLASH" tab towards the top of the screen to see their prices for flashing a phone over to Metro
http://www.beigephone.com/metroPCS-Cell-Phones/
Also, I hope this sort of posting doesn't violate forum rules. I'm really just trying to help others who don't know any better.
If they're on XDA chances are, they know how to flash a phone.

I can understand why you would make that assumption. However, as you are aware, in the past 4 or 5 years, a few things have changed:
1) the number of Android users has greatly increased
2) the number of MetroPCS users has greatly increased and, along with that, the number of novice users wanting to flash high-end devices onto the mpcs network
3) XDA has gained many new/novice members (of which I am one)
4) doing a simple google search for "flashing X-phone to metropcs" will yield a number of XDA threads (netscape navigator used to provide a free search engine, but i haven't used it in many years)
For those reasons, I felt it was appropriate to post the thread. If a mod finds this thread unacceptable/simple/useless/etc.. I will surely understand if they decide to delete/lock it. No hard feelings.

You're developing an Android app for Domino's? So you're doing this on a commercial level and being paid for it - but you don't even understand the basics on photo-editing, resizing etc?
I presume that you are going to share your fee with the good people on XDA if any of them help you?
The first one is good
U should edit it
Write in the pic the dominoz quote or something good

Its not on commercial level i want it for my collage final year project!
Can you tell us something more about your problem?
Are you trying to targeting your app for mobile and tablet devices and you have a problem with the UI?

You should really have made that clear at the start . Also, please don't email me directly asking for assistance - I don't respond to direct questions.
If the question you have here is simply about formatting a graphical image then there are probably much better places than XDA for it - specifically for whatever software package you are using to create/edit the images.

I dont yet know what is that UI! But ya i am trying to do this app for mobiles and tabs! When we flip the device the view changes to Pic 2 i don't want that to happen! I cant it to kook like the Pic3 means the clock should move aside!
I'm not sure what, exactly, you're trying to achieve. Are you saying the background in 'portrait' mode should look like pic1, but when you rotate the phone it should look like pic3, not pic2?
Not sure how you would do it - I would try making pic1 wider (put 1/2 a screen-width of plain background each side) and see how it scales then.
Or else tell me how to resist the screen to flip in landscape mode, even if the device is turned! And i am using android SDK with eclipse!
