Stuck in boot loop - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I really screwed up, I was installing a new OP and was wiping Cache, Dalvik ect... when I accidently wiped my external storage. Well I mounted my SD card and put an OP back on the sd card, installed through TWRP and I'm just stuck in a boot loop. Have tried several differnt OP's and all I get is the boot loop. Can someone please help me correct what I screwed up. Everything is gone, when I look under Android secure there is nothing.

I'm not sure what you mean by OP? Maybe you mean ROM? Anyway you need to give more information, what are your bootloader details?

Your correct, I was half asleep when I posted my question. I do mean ROM. What kind of information from the bootloader would you like?
S-off
CID-111111111
HBOOT-1.09.0000
OpenDSP-v34.1.0.45.1219

Well you're s-off, so the boot.img isn't the problem. Which ROMs in particular have you tried installing? What version of TWRP are you using?

VenomXL 4.0.0 Sense 5, VenomXL 3.2.7, HatkaXL-evita-v4.7.1. These are all ROM's that I have previously run on my phone. TWRP is v2.3.3.1.
Thank you for your help.

Lol I have a lot of spare time on my hands recently, I can't work right now due to health problems so I spend a lot of time on here. I've taken a lot from the XDA community over the years so I feel it's the right thing to do to try to give back and help people where my knowledge permits. I love learning, especially when it comes to Android and I think this is the best place to do it. I think the next step is to actually try to learn how to develop a ROM, but that'll have to wait until I get a new PC.

What would be a good RUU and how would you flash it? I don't want to lose root. Went through to much to achive it.

Root isn't the thing you should be worried about, the unlocked bootloader and custom recovery are what you actually need to flash custom ROMs. All root does is give you administrative access to the root directories on your phone.
You are s-off so it doesn't matter which RUU you use, click the link in my signature and you'll find RUU links in there. Your bootloader will remain unlocked and you will retain your s-off status through the RUU process. You don't "flash" an RUU, it's an exe file so you run it like you would run any other exe program on a pc. An RUU returns your phone to being completely stock, including recovery, so you'll need to flash TWRP again afterwards.

Would you be willing to explain the steps of installing the RUU. I think I know, just don't want to screw that up also. Once I get that far I should be fine flashing TWRP.

No worries, it's an exe file so it's pretty easy. Put your phone into fastboot mode and connect it to your pc, then run the RUU exe program, it's as simple as that. Just follow the prompts on the pc, you just need to say ok a couple of times.
Just make sure HTC Sync Manager is uninstalled, make sure no other programs are running, and make sure screen saver/hibernation is turned off.
Just make sure you don't disconnect your phone while the RUU is running, sometimes it might look like the process is freezing (it sat on 27% for a while when I did it) but just let it continue, it should be fine.

Just tried running the RUU and it was not able to connect with my OneXL, it had been so long since I have done any of this I forgot when I was flashing TWRP almost a year ago, both my laptop and desktop were not able to connect to the phone, something to do with the USB ports (Windows 8). However, I have an old laptop with XP that will connect to the phone. I am leaving for work at this point and will not be able to run the RUU until late tonight. I will let you know how it works out. Thanks

Thanks so much timmaaa, got out my old windows xp laptop and the RUU is loading on the phone right now (@29%). For some reason my newer laptop and desktop will not put my phone into Fastboot USB. I think it has something to do with the newer technolgy of the high speed USB. But, soon as I hook up my old XP laptop it picks it up right away and switches into Fastboot USB. It's done, now all I have to do is put TWRP back on the phone and I should be back in business. Thanks

Okay, I ran the new RUU 1.85. I can't seem to get TWRP installed. I downloaded super user# and it says I do not have root. However when I boot into bootloader it says

Didn't think I would need help getting TWRP reinstalled but I do. If you could give me a little more help getting TWRP back on my phone. Thank you

YOUR PHONE IS NOT BRICKED. The term bricked means that your phone is a useful as a brick, i.e. if you can get into HBOOT, it's not bricked.
Gotta ask though, why did you not use the Hack Kit as its the only reliable method to root, my advice to you sir is when this gets cleared up READ AND EDUCATE YOURSELF before you really do brick your phone.
If you have a SDcard reader, pop out the SDcard and place one of the PD98IMG stock ROMs on your SDcard. From here you can reboot into HBOOT with the sdcard in your phone and HBOOT should pick up the PD98IMG and flash a working stock ROM. From here, you can root with the Hack Kit...
This will help you, read it and do what the stock ROM option...if you can get into HBOOT
I have tried doing that, it says loading image, then parsing, then goes back to the hboot screen, it doesn't say press volume up to update or anything else as I have read in many other posts. Am I doing something wrong? As far as not using the hack kit, I didn't really stumble on that until after it was to late, sure wish I had found it in the first place. Guess if I could just get it back to factory, I would accept that doing this isn't for me and not mess with it again. I am good at following directions, but nothing I have tried seems to work.

is the file named exactly "PD98IMG.zip"..you may also want to check the hide extension option to be sure its not hiding the .zip because if it is and you renamed it to "PD98IMG.zip" with the hide extension on, the phone will read it as "PD98IMG.zip.zip" and you would get that error.
haha and yeah man, we've all been there...I don't want to discourage you man, rooting is such an awesome experience and the hack kit is a pretty straight forward process, if you do the research and take the time to understand what you're doing, but lets see if we can help you out here first. I had the same issue you're having when I tried to flash a radio (same PD98IMG method you're trying to use) and it turned out to be the hide extension issue.
I had also verified that as well, I went under tools, folder options, view tab, scrolled down to hide extensions for known file types and unchecked... And, everything was correct, just verified to be on the safe side.

hmm, so its named PD98IMG.zip caps and everything? If its not working you m ay have to get a stock RUU and run it through fastboot..
This is why you should educate yourself first. You do not need to unlock the bootloader from the HTC dev site. Now you could flash the the stock ruu from the PC and then use the hack kit. Check the stickies in the Inspire general section for more help.

I did notice the Image version the program shows is on the phone is 3.13.0.0, and it is trying to put 2.47.502.7 on the phone... Is this the problem? If so, whats the solution, I am so lost now its not even funny.... I apologize everyone.

Dalton, lock your bootloader again. Boot into fastboot and plug the phone. You will see fastboot usb at the top. Then plug your phone and open cmd session. Once there type fastboot oem relock. Once that is done, try flashing the .exe file in the HTC site (original GB update), making sure that you have HTC Sync installed.
If that fails, then I would try using the HACK Kit to gain S-OFF and root. You will then be able to revert to stock or flash a custom rom...
Had a similar problem when using aahk my own fault and I took care of it. Long winded, so short of it, are you trying to install through
1. hboot or 2. on the computer using HTC rom update?
I ended up trying 2. But ended up using aahk to finish.
HTC update errored out and the recovery portion would not work, just in a boot loop on HTC logo
This was good news as aahk could take over on USB during that HTC green letters white background.
I'd suggest reading the effen manual run the tool to get it up and going, figure out what you want to do. I've used it to return to stock with s off before go back into roms.
So look at those options know what you want and then power on the phone USB connected and during HTC screen enter your number the kit should take over and give you what you asked it.
That should give you a working rom image.

Dalton,
I would suggest following glevitan's and willm's assertion of getting s-off and root to use custom roms. Custom roms are WAY better than anything HTC has to offer, and much easier to install, if you have an issue warranty wise, you can always return to stock. Just make sure you know how to flash correctly, search for it and you will find easy instructions, and if memory serves, a youtube video which helped me greatly.

Alright, is there a custom recovery installed on it? Go to recovery from bootloader menu and it it says TWRP or CWM then there is.
Edit: Also, I'm assuming you have no knowledge of adb and fastboot commands? Because you might need to learn. And did you try this ruu? It's for your firmware version. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1814217

Alright, so I'm assuming the problem is there is no ROM on the phone or someone did factory reset in bootloader. So if the ruu helps, great (it should). If not, then I'm sure we'll figure it out.
thats what ive been assuming as well im really hoping this works out and i do appreciate the help ive been trying to figure out for hours how to find the correct ruu that i need.
now just to be clear there isnt any kind of preperation or anything for this right? im just going to go into the bootloader and make sure the usb is connected and recognized and the open the file on my pc and let it do its thing...
i got about 20 minutes left on this download (my internet connection is poop out here) and ill let you know how it works out

Yup. Since you're on an older hboot there's no preparation needed. I'm assuming you don't really want to get into all this rooting stuff and just want a working phone? If you want help with rooting, come back here when the ruu is done, but if you like it stock, then you should be good to go

[Q] AT&T HTC One X Soft Brick. Tried everything I could find. Suggestions?

So my AT&T HTC One X is bootloader unlocked, super CID and was rooted. I installed a copy of Viper XL 4.2.0 that had issues with the radio turning off so I thought I'd try Maximus HD. I flashed the boot.img and went to install the rom only to find that the rom was for the international version of the HTC One X only (this was conveniently overlooked in the thread). I backed out of installation, went to restore with my TWRP backup and it had been deleted. I reinstalled the Viper XL rom and my phone booted up to the HTC developers screen (red text) and went black. This now happens every time I try to boot the phone up.
I have access to fastboot and clockwork recovery. I can't get ADB to work as I don't have access to enable USB debugging. I have flashed a few roms since with their respective boot.img to no avail. The phone still just boots to the HTC screen and blacks out.
I don't have S-off and, from my research, I can't get it without ADB so I can't RUU and return to stock without bricking (apparently). I've been at this for about a month and this soft brick is starting to look a whole lot like a hard brick.
Any suggestions, or am I out of business?
Thanks in advance!

Not sure if I can help you much but I did notice an important clue by what you said. It looks like you flashed the boot.img before flashing the Rom. This is backwards. You are supposed to flash the Rom first and then the boot.img. If you are not S-Off this will indeed cause problems. If you are still able and have the files on the phone, try flashing in that order and see if that clears it up. Oh and P.S. I'm sure you already are kicking yourself but yes, stick to Roms made for our phone in this forum.
Just noticed something else:
you said you had access to fastboot? Connect the phone and open a CMD prompt, navigate to your ADB/Fastboot folder (Where ever you keep your adb/fastboot tools) and then type "fastboot devices" to see if your computer is talking to your phone. If it is, you said you can flash Viper. you will just need to unzip the Viper zip and get the boot.img. Put that file in your ADB/Fastboot folder. open a CMD prompt again and navigate once again to you ADB/Fastboot folder, then type "fastboot flash boot boot.img and that should get you back on the road.
This is assuming you have a folder with the required ADB/Fastboot resources (if you don't I recommend you learn how) and knowledge on how to navigate to that folder with DOS commands.

You said you flashed the boot.img from Maximus before flashing the ROM (which is ok, the previous member is incorrect in saying that it must be afterwards, it can be either), but did you flash the boot.img from the Viper XL ROM when you flashed that? If not your phone is trying to boot Viper while the Maximus boot.img is still installed, obviously this won't work.
One thing. The fact that Maximus ROM is only for the Endeavoru wasn't "conveniently overlooked" as you sarcastically put it. You were in the wrong forum. The ROM itself is in the Endeavoru forum and you have the Evita so you shouldn't be in the Endeavoru forum in the first place. The ROM is in the correct forum, it doesn't need to be labelled "Endeavoru only" because the user should be aware of which device they have and be aware of which forum they are in. The fact that you're bouncing around both forums is a bit of a worry. You have no reason to be in that forum.

Stay within our device forum, you don't ever need to be anywhere else. You're pretty lucky you haven't actually bricked your phone by flashing that ROM. By the way, there's no such thing as a soft brick. A brick is when your phone will not power on at all. It's either bricked or it isn't.

Thanks for the reply. I believe the reason I'm not bricked is because I backed out of the installation of Maximus HD during the setup screen progression. The actual ROM was never flashed. However, I have flashed the boot.img and ROMs for Viper, Xylon, and Cyanogenmod with no success. The result is the same every time (HTC screen, then black). I extract the boot.img from each of the roms, flash it, and then flash the ROM. The ROM I flash is a copy of the the original with the boot.img still inside. Perhaps I should be removing the boot.img if I am going to flash it separately in fastboot? And I realize that the threads are specific for certain phones now. It's all kind of a mess to get into at first.
I understanding that it can be a bit confusing at first, especially with the phones betting similarly named. But you know now so you shouldn't have this problem again. I believe you will probably need to run an RUU to get out of this mess, but I'll need to see your bootloader details first, just the first five lines.

Actually I can't take credit for this. Timmaaa pointed out something I didn't know. You can flash them in either order (mind blown!) I've only see it one way. I learn a ton every day. @timmaaa pointed out you had the Maximus boot.img loaded. I think you just flashed over it and now you have the correct boot.img for the Rom you are running. Glad everything worked out for you and I learned something in the process too. Cheers!

thanks again for your help and this might be a total shot in the dark but I am still having the boot to black issue after installing uxylon. the room is running well enough (4g won't turn on but one problem at a time) but every time I turn the phone off or rent I have to get into fastboot and flash the boot.img to get the phone on again. is that normal? the only other ROM I have ever had working is viper but I haven't seen any indication that having to use fastboot to turn the phone on every time is normal. is there a way to fix this possibly?

Thanks for the reply! I will get the bootloader info ASAP bit don't I need to be s-of in order to RUU? from what I've read, if you don't have unlocked bootloader, root access, and s-off, you'll end up bricking your phone with RUU. I'd really like to do it but I have tried to get s-off to no avail.
No, that isn't normal at all, there's definitely something screwy there. I think you're gonna need to run an RUU, so you'll need to get s-off. Try this:

Definitely not normal. A few recommendations:
1. Back up all your stuff, wipe everything except the SD card, Flash a fresh copy of the Rom, Flash the boot.img (you really should consider S-Off), Wipe the cache and DALVIK cache one more time, boot up the system.
2. Same as above except choose another Rom. There are plenty to choose from. The 4.4 Roms are getting a lot better now that the new Kernel fix got rid of the boot loops/reboots.
Sorry about the delay, it's been a heavy week at work. Hope things work out for you.
I don't think flashing another ROM is going to fix the problem at hand. There's very possibly something much deeper wrong here, which a ROM flash won't fix. I honestly think it's better to run an RUU which will bring everything back to the way it's meant to be and the user can start with a blank slate.

You have no idea how much I have vicariously learned from your posts. Thanks Timmaa! I keep thinking if more of these folks would go ahead and get S-Off they would have waaaaaaaaaay less issues.
Flashing another ROM could be worth a try, but the fact that the boot.img seems to be disappearing whenever the screen is off suggest something has gone wrong at a lower level.
I'm glad to help, I'm still learning something new just about every day too from XDA.

I totally agree now because after rereading the post, there is a radio issue in addition to the boot issue. Is it possible that the Endeverou boot.img messed something up?
Yeah, that's exactly what I'm thinking. An RUU will hopefully fix that right up.

That sounds like a good plan. (I'm really appreciating all your input by the way! Thanks so much!) One question though, upon checking out the rumrunner website, there isn't specific mention of the HTC One X Evita. Call me paranoid, but after what I've been through I want to make 100% sure I'm compatible before moving forward. Have you or anyone used this specific method for S-Off on the One X Evita?
For the Evita you use the universal HTC method. I've created a thread for it if you want to make sure it's worked for other Evita owners.

SIM unlock didn't work, factory reset wiped everything, phone doesn't boot.

But wait, there's more.
I just exchanged an Xperia S for this HTC One S in excellent condition. It was already bootloader unloked, has TWRP only that it was sim locked. I tried the unlock.sh script (both from terminal emulator, and root explorer) then manually getting the UN_lock_code and subtracting the reversed 7 digits from the IMEI (with the added one), and even the automated app. The script kept running and never show the unlock code, and the one I got using this method wasn't accepted.
Then I thought I should to a factory reset and try again. So I reboot to bootloader, chose factory reset and now everything is wiped. No OS installed so I can't boot, TWRP won't mount USB storage so I can' flash any other rom.
Please help.

It is a C2, yes. How does that help me?
edit: Well, some good news is that I managed to be able to mount USB storage from TWRP (a simple FORMAT in windows seems to have fixed it). Any particular rom I should flash before attempting to sim unlock again?

Knowing that it is C2 will prevent you from flashing a ROM that isn't compatible with your phone. From experience, I'd go with PAC Rom. It has a ton of features, and should allow you to do anything you want. As far as SIM unlocking, shouldn't you be S-Off first?
And you formatted the phone via Windows? I've never heard of such a thing, never mind it actually fixing a problem.
But if it ain't broke, don't fix it. And your issue seems to be resolved for the most part. Regarding booting, that is.

I'm not sure, tbh, do I? But if I do, that's what I'll do first, however, I don't recall reading anywhere S-OFF being a prerequisite to sim unlocking.

Well yeah... oddly enough... I formatted the phone's internal storage via windows and then I was able to mount it as USB storage from recovery.
further edit: I managed to flash a rom and boot the phone.
For the sake of trying everything, I would s-off first. The easiest way is from stock right after running an RUU, without a custom recovery, No SU or busybox, and a locked bootloader. Moonshine worked for me after trying all the other methods.
I personally love the Viper ROMS. I only wish they would have kept updating the ones for the ONE S and slammed kitkat into it. It would be my daily driver. I use a ville with dirty unicorn 4.4. It's my daily driver.
Awesome that you got it mounted. Maybe that forced the drivers to reinstall properly. Did you check for fastboot and ADB functionality and visibility from the computer? You'll need both of those before attempting s-off.

adb devices lists the phone, however fastboot devices does not... it keeps waiting for device. I tried this fix for windows 8.1 but I can't get it to take the modded drivers. It says it finds them but can't install because the system supposedly cannot find the file.
That seems to be an issue with Windows 8.1. It also seems to be the only OS affecting fastboot. There is a file I used to get all of my drivers working properly, with ADB and fastboot. Fastboot is required with any S-Off attempt. I'll go scope out the file and return here.

OK, I managed to get fastboot working, but not S-OFF. Moonshine doesn't work, it keeps saying something needs to be fixed and that I need to read, haha funny. Thing is I followed the exact procedure and met all the prerequisites except for being on a stock ROM.
Currently I am running ViperS C2 5.1.0 baseband 16.22.30.03U_16.11.20.24_M, build number 3.19.401.101. I tried a couple RUUs but none worked. Which am I to use? What next?

I found this repository with some RUU. The last one is the most recent and the closest to your radio version. Reverting flashing this RUU should update your radio to match it. Once stock, you should have the ability to s-off and will have a new kernel. Have you tried flashing the kernel through fastboot?

Was your bootloader UNLOCKED when you tried that update? Because RUU require that the bootloader be LOCKED before they have the ability to flash.

Nope. Bootloader is Relocked.
Now I'm facing another problem. I flashed TWRP via WinDroid HTC ONE S Toolkit and now, when I chose recovery from HBOOT, I get a red triangle with an exclamation mark.
edit: the red triangle was due to flashing TWRP on a locked bootloader. What I plan to do do now is flash this stock rom and try getting S-OFF and eventually sim unlock from there.
*fingers crossed*
further edit: apparently my cid is not supported by this rom.

My wife's phone, it's currently running CleanROM JL beta 1, android 4.1. it's been running this for over a year. time to upgrade it. i haven't kept up with development on this phone and now i'm totally lost.

radio: 0. 19as. 32.09. 11_2
eMMC-boot
...etc.
recovery is TWRP v2.4.1.0
i have no idea where to go from here. can i just drop a new rom on the sd card and flash it from recovery? don't have any software, adb etc and my only computers are macs. would love some advice or at least get pointed in the right direction. tried searching, but i'm just overwhelmed.
i would love to get as close to vanilla android as possible. thanks in advance for the help!
You can't do anything without first updating your firmware. For that you're gonna need access to a PC with an adb/fastboot environment on it. You need to get s-off, then update your firmware, then flash the latest TWRP recovery, then you will be able to update the ROM.

Can't you get access to a Windows PC? Pretty much everything you need to do with Android is Windows.

yeah i guess. pita though. not sure it's worth it for this aging device. i was hoping to get vanilla 4.4 on it and give it to my father in law, but i don't know how much more i want to jerk with it...
thanks very much for the help, though.

It's pretty straight forward, just sort out drivers, get s-off, flash firmware, and you're golden.

Not for long. Looks like my emmc is starting to fail in my Evita, luckily I've just bought a OnePlus One, it's gonna take a couple of weeks to arrive though. I'll still support this device though probably.

when you say "flash firmware" is that an ruu? it's been awhile and i'm not sure on the terminology anymore. i've flashed samsungs, htc's motorolas and nexus devices and they all have different approaches. i can't keep them straight

No, not an RUU, go to my How-To guide in my signature for details.
Sent from a crappy Samsung because my Evita died
I'll quickly explain the flashing firmware. Firmware is basically the stuff like boot loader and radio. You need the entire firmware package updated.
So to do that, we have to get your phone into that mode that's like when you're taking a RUU. It's the black screen with a green progress bar. From there, we use an unusual command to install the firmware.
Just read the "How to Update Firmware" in my Sig and apply that method to any firmware package, as long as you're s-off and supercid
