It will help to state what type of operating system you have on the phone.
If you are referring to Android, the answer is Yes!

Hi all,
I want to make a rooted rom from my HK version of Magic, an much original as possible, just need root. May I ask for your help to gather the relavant information? Like,
1. How to dump the whole system files (but not as nandroid)?
2. How to make it rooted (just put in the hacked su)?
3. Anything else (I know it may have a lot, please point me out)....
Great THX....
Hi...nobody interest? Thx...
Hi!
I'm new, but I saw this and now I know how to sign an update.zip. The second thing I know is, that the boot.img is important to be root on the shell (adb shell). Now you can take a rom from there (Firmware SFR Original) as your base and the boot.img from another rom to be root...
Could someone correct me if I'm wrong?
edit: Btw I'm sorry for my english, I'm german...
Same as here....I just want to root the machine only....(I want to keep current rom)
how can i do??

does that leave the rom on your phone that was on previously? I want to be able to run overclock widget, theme, etc.....
Coming from a G1 where rooting was so easy this is different to me. My understanding when reading it it loads a different rom/image on your phone...
what we are asking is is it possible to somehow dump the current rom off your phone (eg. 3 Australia), root it and flash it back to your phone so you now have root access....
thx
Probably tons of questions like these, but I couldn't find the right answers, sorry.
1) What makes the Nexus S easier to root than other devices?
2) When you root, you can install custom roms. What else can you do with root acces?
3) Do you need root to overclock your device, and do you need a custom rom? I saw a video of the Nexus S overclocked to 1.3ghz, and it looked like a custom rom (boot screen was different).
4) Can you receive OTA-updates when rooted? And when having a custom rom installed? And when overclocked?
5) Do you need to root to install home screen replacements like Launcher Pro and ADW Launcher?
6) I saw that rooting 'wipes' all your data? What does that mean exactly?
Thanks in advance!

1. Other devices rooting is quite an extensive process on the NS its just fastboot oem unlock and then flash a recovery and then a rom. Google isnt trying to lock you out
2.you can do just about anything that isnt allowed in stock, i know thats vague but true
3. yes you need root, custom rom no, custom kernel yea
4.you can receive OTA on stock rooted roms but it will remove root and replace recovery with stock, most roms remove the OTA ability so you dont lose root
5. no
6. what whipes your data is fastboot oem unlock it does this for security purposes and it does what it means gets rid of everything on the "SD card" and "internel memory" you can just copy stuff off the SD portion but as far as everything else like app data game saves and what have you your pretty SOL
So if you've rooted your device, you have to un-root it when a OTA-update comes, and then when you root it again, it will wipe all your data again?
A normal android user like me, would he have a good reason to root his/her device, or is just installing a homescreen replacement enough excitement?
This custom kernel, does it install more than just a different bootscreen? I am going to buy a Nexus S because there isn't messed with Android, but I am interested in overclocking so that I will not get jealous at other dual-core devices. If a custom kernel changes the interface, it is a no-go for me.
Rooting, is it like jailbraking on the iPhone/iPod Touch? All my friends have jailbroken their iPod's and iPhone's, so that they can download most apps for free and install other cool stuff. Is there a way (with or without rooting) to download apps for free on your Android?
^ This question is probably going to stay unanswered. I can say that I'm just asking, and that I will not use it, but then I would lie. I could also say that I haven't got that much money, but then I would also be lying. I could say that I don't have a creditcard, which is true, but there are a lot of creditcard 'simulators'. And I'm probably saying this all to pretend that I'm a super intellegent guy, so that you would think: 'Oh, he doesn't deny he is going to use it, he is smart, I will answer the question', but I'm not intelligent. And I probably said that out of self-pity, in the hope someone will answer the question.

Not that I condone piracy or anything but you can pirate apps without being rooted.... unless you're on AT&T.
I know this because certain applications who are being beta tested (e.g. Trillian Beta) was in .apk format... all you needed was Unknown Sources. Root isn't required to do that
just saying.

I can not use this information, but you and I know I will. So, thanks, I guess.
Hi All,
I have the above and was thinking of rooting it but have some questions.
1/. If i root the phone do i also have to unlock the bootloader or is unlocking the bootloader only if i want to install a custom rom?
2/. If i only root the phone how can i make a backup of it in case i need to restore it to factory settings?
3/. Can someone recommened a custom rom and it features? I read alot about cleanrom.
4/. I also read about CM9 what does this do?
5/. One click unlock is that ok to use?
6/. What is the main difference when 1 roots there phone against not doing it? Does it change anything when installing? Does it give me extra abilitys with the phone?
Thanks in advance.
1/. If i root the phone do i also have to unlock the bootloader or is unlocking the bootloader only if i want to install a custom rom?
No you do not have to unlock the bootloader unless you want to install custom roms or recovery
2/. If i only root the phone how can i make a backup of it in case i need to restore it to factory settings?
You can you use an app like titanium back up to back up apps and data
If you unlock your bootloader you can install a custom recovery and create a nandroid back up which you can restore your phone to in the event of a problem
3/. Can someone recommened a custom rom and it features? I read alot about cleanrom.
This I really a matter of preference
4/. I also read about CM9 what does this do?
Cm 9 is close to vanilla android with some extra goodies like themes to name one
5/. One click unlock is that ok to use?
Should be fine just make sure to use the one that matches your current software ie 1.73 or 1.85
6/. What is the main difference when 1 roots there phone against not doing it? Does it change anything when installing? Does it give me extra abilitys with the phone?
Root in short gives permission to access and modify things in the system of your phone ie read and write privileges
Hope this helps

1. You only need to unlock the bootloader if you want to install a custom recovery and rom
2. You can use an RUU for that, otherwise you need to unlock your bootloader and install a custom recovery in order to make backups (like restorable system snapshots)
3. The 3 versions of CleanROM are pretty good. Very stable and I'd say that all the features work that are supposed to. CM9 and AOKP are still in alpha at the moment and not everything works quite right. I can't speak for any other roms but I'm sure they're in the same boat as CleanROM
4. CM9 is a custom rom based on AOSP (Android Open Source Project). It's completely stock android but with lots of new features and tweaks. Right now it's in its 4th alpha. From what I've seen it's usable as a daily driver but there are still a lot of kinks to work out.
5. Yes
6. Rooting the phones gives you (and apps that you allow) access to the root file system of the phone. You can install custom bootanimations, remove carrier bloat, and do lots of other things that you wouldn't normally be able to do. I'm not gonna go over everything because that would take awhile
Thanks heaps for that.
Now just need a good place to get games for my HTC One Xl.
btw how does 1 say thanks without replying?
I am very seriously considering rooting my s3 but there are some features that I would like to hold on to after the root. At least for now. Like motion, and some of the characteristics of the dialer and contact list. I am a noob to rooting and as such I dont know the possibilities and what's available to me after rooting. I'm trying to learn as much as I can before I make this leap.

Rooting your phone only grants you root access to your device and allows you to use root only apps like SetCPU.. It doesn't add or remove any features. It is when you flash certain ROMs that you may lose features.

Ok so if I'm understanding right the basic functionality of my phone will stay the same untill decide to use a ROM? Or am I wrong?
That is correct if you just root and unlock your phone's bootloader you will just have a rooted stock ROM.
Great. Thanks.
Hi all,
Can I replace the ROM of my phone to earlier versions?
The manufactures have done a mod of JB 4.2 to 4.4 KitKat but the ROM have a lot of bugs, sad , my question is, can I flash a 4.2.x stable ROM from for example a S4 clone ROM? Plus, my download mode is fake because everything is chinese.
And also, with the attachments and using CPU-Z.

Hi.
Unfortunately I was unable to find any support or info about your device on xda. If you have the stock firmware or a nandroid backup, you could restore the old ROM.
You can also try a factory reset and set up your phone again to see if that sorts things out.
Another possibility is to root your device, install Titanium Backup app and freeze/uninstall bloatware to reduce burden on phone resources. This might (or might not) reduce your lag. Please proceed with caution and only if you know what you're doing as injudicious use of this feature can cause system instability.
Short of that, I'm afraid your only option is to contact the manufacturer and request for a downgrade.

Plus, I don't have SuperSU installed and my phone is rooted since my phone was bought . How can I install titanium backup without the permission of SuperSU? And, the process that keeps my phone laggy is called "kswapd0".

I couldn't find any ROM or support for your device on XDA. There are a few random threads lik this one :http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/question-alps-s5-clone-sm-g900h-cwm-rom-t2806419 but no proper custom ROM.
