E:unknown volume for path [ext-sd] - General Questions and Answers

Hello, few days ago I tried to parition my ext sd card using mini tool for use in link2sd app and I couldn't make it. Then, I tried to full format the ext sd card in my computer in Windows explorer but even I formatted it, the data transfer becomes very slow. And sometime it even says that the device might be disconnected. Also, when I tried to install a custom rom from the ext sd card in recovery mode, even it is said to be done successfully, when doing a reboot, it always stuck in the boot logo. And in the end, when I when to wipe dalvik cache in recovery mode, it says that
E:unknown volume for path [ext-sd]. I've tried to flash stock recovery and then re-root it and use other sd card, but it still act the same. What is the problem?

I don't have this kind if issue until few days ago. By the way, I recently got some issue with my external sd card due to changes in partition. Will this caused the problem? Yes, since you have changed CWM (TWRP) it is ok now, At the same time IF you partition your SD card the partitions must be of the same format that the ROM you use can access, meaning not all ROMS can utilize/use different formats.

I am having this same type of problem, except my roms work.
I am running cwm 6.0.4.7 touch on my sgh-i474m
I have flashed many many roms still think slim 4.4.4 is my favorite until they get 5.0.2 on a stable build.
anyways
every single time i wipe data/factory reset, the data wipe will successfully complete, however it always, no matter which version of cwm i have tried i get:
-wiping data...
Fomatting /data...
Formatting /cache...
formatting /sd-ext...
E:unknown volume for path [ext-sd]
Formatting /sdcard/.android_secure...
Data Wipe Complete.
Everything works fine afterward and the rom successfully loads..
I'm just curious to know why this error occurs...
let me re-iterate i have tried various versions of CWM and i always get this error...
if anyone could help me with this it will put my O.C.D. mind at ease.
thanks
stay classy

Few days ago I flashed cm 12.1[UNOFFICIAL] without clearing data and cache as I was on cm 12[UNOFFICIAL] but then I decided to flash PAC MAN ROM [OFFICIAL] before flashing the PAC MAN ROM I cleared the data cache etc...while wiping CWM recovery gave me an error ...
which was "E:unknown volume for path [ext-sd]" I still tried to clear dalvick cache etc but still the same error then I flashed the rom and Gapps anyways and rebooted the data was cleared and everything seemed fine but when I tried to install and run apps like 'Adobe Acrobat Reader','Tubemate','Facebook',and some more 3rd party apps they all would FC some would FC on startup some while using them Today I flashed Ressurection Remix 5.5.5[OFFICIAL] by using the same process I used for flashing PAC MAN ROM but CWM gave same error and the apps still DO NOT WORK THESE APPS WORKED FINE IN CM12 and CM12.1
I dont know what is wrong or which step I messed up..
I would be very great full if someone helps me out as I really need those apps to work
Thanks!
And yeah I did no changes in the Kernel and all The only changes I did Are mentioned above

Do you have ClockworkMod. Recovery solarnz version R4c installed? What sdcard are you flashing the zip file from? You chose the wrong option from the recovery menu...you need to choose "install zip file from sdcard" or something like that. Then "choose zip file" navigate to it and choose it,
If you are trying to flash the zip file from your 'internal' sdcard, it won't work. You need a physical micro sdcard, inserted in your Xoom.

Same Issue with Blue Phokus!Tiamat Screen
Let me give you some specifics on exactly what I tried to do, maybe I made an obvious mistake that lead to this problem.
First I am am on a stock kernel Xoom that has had CWM Recovery flashed and a new boot.img flashed so that I could root it. I did that a few weeks ago so that I could start taking advantage of some of the superuser applications I wanted to use. It did not take me long to realize that I still seemed to be locked down a bit as far as overclocking and the like. So I decided to start considering custom roms/kernels. I decided to go with the Tiamat-Xoom-Rom-2.2.2.Moray.zip. I opened up CWM Rom Manager and go to install ROM from SD Card, and go to my downloads folder and choose the zip. From there CWM takes over on backing up / installing the new ROM. However, it will never get past that blue splash screen. I was able to reboot into recovery and load a backup I took right before trying to load the ROM. However, any help getting the ROM to work would be appreciated.

You will need to go into recovery menu, choose: wipe data/factory reset, then reboot. If you change roms, in this case from stock to Tiamat Moray, you will need to wipe/factory reset. Otherwise, bootloops.
Thanks and a couple questions
i had read that I had to do a factory reset /restore before doing this and thought that might be the problem. I appreciate the quick response a couple questions I have.
Will this reset also reset my boot.I mg and recovery? Do I have to catch the boot sequence back into recovery before it reboot after the reset to avoid issues or let it boot fully? I do appreciate the help.

No a "wipe data/factory reset" will only wipe/reset your data to the basic level of the most recent rom you flashed. You need to do this to clear out anything from earlier versions that might conflict with the new rom.

[GUIDE] Rooting ALCATEL OT-918 (v2.3.6)

Hello everybody,
This is just a small guide I made for rooting ALCATEL OT-918 (Maybe also 918D or M) devices on which SuperOneClick fails. Most of the files are not by me so all credit goes to the original author...
Tutorial:
01) Unzip usb_driver.zip and install the drivers. (phone shall not be off an plugged in, thx dbask)
02) Copy the file Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip to the root of your SD card.
03) Make sure your battery is fully charged and turn off your phone.
04) Head to the directory SP_Flash_Tool_v2.1134.00 and start FlashTool.exe.
05) Make sure the menu Options->USB Mode is checked.
06) Use attached scatter file creator to make scatter. (or use Android_2.3.6_MT6573_Android_scatter_918.txt)
Warnings/Errors like this can be safely ignored:
Code:
[Warning Hint] Get BMT block count fail, default BMT block count is used!
Code:
[Hint] Bootloader files are lost when automatically loading by scatter file.
Code:
Please make sure you want to go through anyway.
Code:
DSP_BL is unchecked, which may result in a boot failure
07) Check the entry with name "RECOVERY" and double click it.
08) Select the recovery.img file and again make sure ONLY one entry is checked.
09) Click the Download button and plugin your phone with the USB cable.
* Wait some time (untill the recovery file is loaded to your phone) *
10) Unplug your phone and press the volume up and power button at once
11) Select "Flash Zip from SDCard" and choose the Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
12) Confirm the update and reboot your phone. Everything should be done, phone is rooted!
Actual tutorial made by others. I only try to make it a bit more clear.

ALCATEL Scatter Retriever v0.1
Just to make this thread a little development related: I coded a tool that should be able to automatically create scatter files for your (ALCATEL) device. It is only tested on my own device but it should work for other (ALCATEL) devices too (Sources can be posted if needed).

Last words
The tools and files used to make this tutorial are not created by me. The FlashTool is made by MediaTek (the company that makes the ALCATEL devices), the recovery.img is made by somebody at 592zn, the USB Drivers are made by MediaTek/Alcatel (unsure).

download the One Touch Upgrade software from here: http://www.alcatelonetouch.com/ph/products/andorid_smartphones/ot-918.html to reinstall your OS
to root, use this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27178532&postcount=16
Device is upto date and exits
I did that and it says there is no other later version than the one already install on your device and it exits.
Is there anything else I can do?
Thanks
@kippsoft: Sorry, but I cannot give my data and cache... it contains private stuff such as contacts, emails, password and all stuff like that... nothing more to do I guess
@ mr.expdia: I am very very grateful
I am very gratefull for all that you have one to me.Your time spend and assistance is highly appreciated.
Thanks alot.
But said those images were for Alcatel OT-918?Please confirm that?
I thought those were images before you used your phone...it is okay.
And do you have any working custom rom for 2.3.6? Most of the available are for 2.3.5.
Though my problem is not solved...I have learn alot and that is exactly what I wanted when I joined xda.
Thanks to all.:good:
They are captured while rooting my phone, so yes. And I do not have a custom rom, I think you need to wait for one to be created.
Greetings

Same problem was with me too. But my phone was in warranty so I got it to service center and now it will be replaced with a new one. Hey XDA Guys is there anyway we can prevent this thing? Even I did wipe all data and the phone just booted till screen where Android image comes and then restart.

After I test it. I encountered one bug. When I plugged-in the USB Cable it allows me to choose among Camera, MTP, USB Debugging and Charging Only.
When I clicked the Charging Only, the next time you plugin your USB again you won't find the other options again like Camera, MTP, USB Debugging.
I tried to click the kernel version to access the USB Debugging mode but no lock.
I'm still looking for a way to fix this problem.
Flashed it successfully!
I just wanted to thank the guy who made this custom rom for lenovo a536 and this is my first flashed rom (btw i am 16 and it took me almost 4 hours to figure everything out and solve the problems), cheers , keep it updated as long as posible :fingers-crossed::good:
Fixed bootloop
Reyul, thank you for sharing this great ROM! For now, all is working well!
One recommendation, in HOW TO, add clearer explain for installing. I had understood like i need to flash all zips from once, without restarting. This was causing a bootloop first time. Then i had formated /cache, dalvik, /system and /data and install it again. After every zip i had formated dalvik cache. And it turns on!!
Very big greetings~!
sim data net is it working............? in my phone its not working
I have question , why if I shutdown the phone and turn in on again my Imei lose and sim card not detected and if I reboot everything is work again?
and if I download Asphalt 8 this is can't open always FC ?
Well guys, after a two month of usage, i can say it's pretty good. Everything works good and no major bugs. But there is few issues:
- Youtube app:
Youtube app doesn't working good. It really laggy and sound is going faster than video, also video stucks on some part of clip. I tried to unistall it and to delete datas.
- Battery:
When phone shutdowns by battery empty state, there is no valid changing animation. Only battery with the bolt, and no procent. Btw., i can't even turn phone on while it's not changed for 3%. That can take to 10 minutes... But that is not issue for this ROM only, there is that on stock also. Else, battery keeps about day, day and half.
- Signal on wakeup:
When phone shutdowns, and when i turn it on after changing, there is no signal, SIM card is not registered. I need to reboot it again to get it work. This is happens everytime.
- Mobile data:
this nervous me the most... I turn it on, and after 1-2-3 minutes, it's turns off automatically. Doesn't matter what i do.

Crazy, huh? Admittedly, I sideloaded the ROM package, instead of copying it to the SDCARD, but when I subsequently sideloaded appropriate GApps (open_gapps-arm-6.0-pico-20160513.zip) the GApps installer script returned the informative error: the OS reports version 5.1.1. What do you make of this?

Did it already. The installation does not complete. I've not seen this message before "Encryption Failed". The page describes the failure to encrypt and advises the user to factory reset the device. The effect I have observed in the two instances I tried is a completely dark screen but with full adb access?!
To be honest, I'm a little suspicious of the effect of the latest aceopt/sagaopt on "traditional" installs. I've formatted the SDCARD partition back to vfat using TWRP 2870 (original, not opt), but I suspect the data partition is still in no-man's-land...
I've yet to find a page on XDA that describes how to effectively revert changes to the data partition? Do you have any advice on the subject (before I bother the already super-busy Mustaavalkosta!)

Hello again, I'm sorry to bother you. Could you clarify whether this ROM uses the original or "opt" partition scheme (maybe mention it in the OP?)
Thank you

Great work porting. Only some bugs
hi, thank you so much for porting twrp for this phone. with root this phone is more than better. i rooted succesfully with Magisk 18.0.
This recovery only has some problems. after some time using the phone i decided to make a factory reset, as the phone was used by someone else, and i didn't wipe it. ( the previous owner needed to get his data back). anyway, when i go to twrp and try to make a the wipes, it's not posible. the data partition wasn't even on the partition table of the mount option. (System, Cache, Recovery, Dalvik Cache). it wasn't posible to wipe data even in advanced wipe (not appearing in table).
This was very serious to me. but as the phone was performing fine and there was no more visible bugs i decided to use it without format.
Hope you could give it a check and see if the recovery has well updated the partition table. Thank you again
