wondered if people have an opinion on the best way to charge the XDA.
With my current mobile (samsung N500) I always used the policy of charge until full, then run until flat, then charge until full again etc.
ie, never recharging until it was flat. This is a bit of a throwback to when I used to use nicads a lot about 15 years ago.
the methodology being that if you did it this way the batteries remembered how much charge they were supposed to hold.
however, these new lithium polymer batteries in PDA's aren't supposed to have this issue are they?
On my samsung it's been fine, it's held charge well and never really gotten less, even after a years worth of charging and discharging.
A chap at work does the complete opposite, he puts his on charge whenever he can, whether it's flat or not, and usually before it falls below 80%, his reasoning being that he read somewhere that if you trickle charge it a lot it lasts longer.
as you can see, two conflicting methods of working.
what should I be doing to make my battery last as long and as well as possible
The "memory effect" issue is known for the N.MH battaries only ... and it's true that u have to drain it each time ... the XDA has L.Polymer type which doesn't have this issue ... u can charge it each night.
so I can charge it each night whether it's flat or not? sorry if this sounds dumb but I just want to make sure I understand this right,
don't fell like sending it off to have the battery replaced every few months because I abuse it.

I knew the Nicads had the memory problem, but the NiMh aren't supposed to be as bad. Most new types of batteries don't have the memory problem, just increased capacities and less harmful to the environment.

I used to own a iPAQ 3630 and now I own an O2 XDA. Both the iPAQ and the XDA have a Li-Po battery, and with both devices I have the same charge/discharge experience. The battery lasts longer if you discharge it almost fully, till say 20-30% and then charge, not sooner. Constantly recharging decreases battery life considerably, as if the battery gets "lazy". My XDA's battery now lasts 5-6 hours usage with backlight on plus some 48hrs on standby. My 2 cents.

3 hours farting around with it in the evening
went to bed at 11pm

no switch off set
phone switched off
by 7.30 am this morning, still had 30% battery left

Saving battery while listening to music
I have never had a problem keeping a battery charge until recently. I normally have my sx56 on standby and talk for about an hour a day and maybe spend half an hour checking appointments. I just recently got a 512 card and when I'm walking somewhere I listen to music. Maybe another hour out of my day. For whatever reason I used to end a 12 hour day with 40-50% battery and now I'm down to 10-20. I currently use wm player and keep the screen off when music is on. Do other softwares use less battery and is this drain in 12 hours normal. It sounds excessive to me.

playing of MP3's really drains the batteries. quite a few reviews use draining the batteries by playing MP3's as some sort of yardstick.
I've seen reviews that quote the XDa as running down flat after 3 .5 hours from playing MP3's.
Can someone help me out here this is for an Orbit 2 less than 1 week old. I charged the device this morning so by 09:00 it was on full power. By 14:00 its down to 75%. Usage below:

I have my email set to retrieve from Yahoo every 15 minutes
On battery the screen is set to 50% - 75% brightness
Co-pilot has live function and traffic updates, but I presume that is only when its actually turned on and running Co-Pilot
What is going wrong?
Firstly, did you give it 3 charges of 16 hours plus? I didn't, and don't have as good a battery life of some others that did.
Also, have you got Windows Live connected and checking your hotmail constantly? That killed my battery.
Finally, I leave HSDPA switched off, as I find it chews juice without being THAT much faster; 3G is fast enough browsing and downloading for me.

I've got a HTC TyTN (hermes) and i get the same problem: my battery wears off in maximum 3 hours after i fully charge it. all the connections are turned off,except for the phone function. also, while it's charging, no matter if it's charging through the usb or the AC charger, the battery gets very hot. PLEASE can anyone help

I all so have battery questions. This devise was advertised as an 7 hour talk time on GSM. Compare to my T-Mobile wing witch was only 5 hour talk time.
I don't use phone a lot during day only 5-10 min phone calls and every 60 min e-mail check. And T-mobile Wing (p4350) was going for 3 days no charge no problem. And This I have to charge every day. At the end of the day i have only 60% And T-Mobile USA don't have 3G eat.
I don't get it this phone supposed have one of the best battery life out of HTC phones. And I did charge it wan i first got it for long time before i tern it on.
About chargin and discharge our phones, whe have to remember that we do not use NiCd/NiMh batteries any more.

Guidelines for prolonging Li-ion battery life!
Unlike Ni-Cd batteries, lithium-ion batteries should be charged early and often. However, if they are not used for a long time, they should be brought to a charge level of around 40% - 60%.
Lithium-ion batteries should not be frequently fully discharged and recharged ("deep-cycled") like Ni-Cd batteries, but this is necessary after about every 30th recharge to recalibrate any external electronic "fuel gauge" (e.g. State Of Charge meter). This prevents the fuel gauge from showing an incorrect battery charge.
Lithium-ion batteries should never be depleted to below their minimum voltage, 2.4v to 3.0v per cell.
Li-ion batteries should be kept cool. Ideally they are stored in a refrigerator. Aging will take its toll much faster at high temperatures. The high temperatures found in cars cause lithium-ion batteries to degrade rapidly.
According to one book,[35] lithium-ion batteries should not be frozen (most lithium-ion battery electrolytes freeze at approximately −40 °C; however, this is much colder than the lowest temperature reached by household freezers).

16 hours?!?!?!!?
It's a highly debated point, but it seems some who have done the old "3 charges of 16 hours" have a longer lasting battery than certainly I do.
In fact the O2 shop I bought the phone from advised the same, although I didn't actually do it!
Who knows the real best thing to do, all I know is I only get a day out of it, with light to medium use and HSDPA turned off.
Personally, I'm a little speculative of the 16 hour charge times.
I'm not gonna try to be an expert here, but aren't Li-Ion charge circuits designed such that when the battery reaches capacity, the charge cycle is complete? Ie. There is no further trickle charge to the battery? In that case, the 16 hour charge is not doing any good.
But in any case, I myself get 2 days fairly easily with about 1.5-2 hours of phone calls in an Edge area.
I am a firm believer a big difference comes from using of Standby and your signal strength. I've noticed where I go ski'in there is a very weak signal and my battery life drops to 40% or less in one day. So I think this is one major characteristic that will vary between all of us and will dramatically affect the battery life test results.

No trickle charge is applied because the Li-ion is unable to absorb overcharge. Trickle charge could cause plating of metallic lithium, a condition that renders the cell unstable.
So charging for 16 hours won't do anything.

I mean, number of hours before it is under 5 percent and needs recharge, from 100%. For example an Ipad has 30 days, I've read numerous reviews that show EEE Transformer in a bad light, with sleep mode eating 20-30 percent per night, or 30 hours standby(Engadget) at most. Rest of reviewers don't point to standby time, only to battery life, I want to know if it dies after 30 hours of sleep mode. WiFi on and without, it's good to know. For example My Galaxy S with WiFi on and a weather app refreshing every hour, with Gmail, has 2 days before it drops below 30%, I don't talk that much on phone and never use Internet browsing on it.

I can't compare to Ipad, but overnight the Asus drains about 5 to 10 percent. That is wifi set to switch off when screen is off. Second about the Endgadget review, my asus lasts on one charge 2 days (48h) normal use, that is normal usage: playing, web browsing, reading, overnight screen off, etc. So you see 30h of sleep mode is very very very wrong because not optimized/too many apps/wifi on.
So I'm no longer reading reviews of the asus, but reading/playing on the Asus

but still it looks not that much compared to apple ipad2, which is kinda sad. I was kinda hoping that this device outperform ipad2 in battery too...
some reviews claims it gets close (1hr difference) and some say not even trying (6hr difference) against the iPad, but I think some of them were using live wallpapers which drain battery pretty fast. It has never stated to be better than the iPad though unless it was with dock.
I dont know if it lasts so much as ipad. However, in my exp. with ipad1 when it had ios 3.2. battery was lasting ages, almost no loss overnight as you point out.
After updating it to 4.2 battery was really drained hard. It was difficult to have it running more than 2/3 days on a row. And the difference came on non use periods. On continous use, it was lasting about the same.
This is, are you sure ipad is doing 30 days?
The only thing that lasts almost a month in standby time in the android world is the galaxy tab.
The battery is definitely not as standby friendly as the ipad. My mom has the first gen ipad and it uses basically no power in standby. On my transformer, I get a drop overnight (8 hours or so) of about 2-3% with wifi off. I use setcpu with a screen off profile to restrict the cpu to the minimum frequency.
It's disappointing because my droid incredible, with a 1500mah battery (1/4 of the transformer?) doesn't drop at all overnight in airplane mode.
I just turn mine off at night b/c I have no need to sync stuff overnight. For that matter I also turned autosync off by default for most apps even when it is on. Basically uses 0 battery that way (maybe 1%). I know that doesn't work for everyone though.
I pulled my TF & dock off the AC on Tuesday at about 7:45AM, both fully charged. As of an hour ago, I had about 72% juice left in the TF (dock is drained). It's been docked the entire time. I've only used it lightly the last 3 days. I did download & install 3.1 during this time as well.

Yes its normal & that happens bcoz your data connection remains on which eats battery, if you want to increase battery life you can use free APNdroid widget with this you can switch ON/Off the data connection. Else use juice defender or tasker they both can save battery life to quite an extent. Both have trial version.
In the night I switch to airplane mode & keep my data connection off hence I get 1.5 day of battery usage sometimes even more, if I don't surf the web then I get full 2 days of battery usage.
Charge time 4hours but I have heard that HTC charger can charge faster & gives longer battery life due to current difference. I will try this weekend borrowing it from a friend.
I think I am the first one to Vote. My usage is mainly calls. 1-2 hours of calling. 1 hour at XDA using XDA application with 3g on. 1-2 hours of playing around with the Phone and gallery etc. But with heavy usage, battery life is just enough to come back home and charge after 8 PM. My battery goes down by 3-4% after over night standby not 20% as mentioned in the above post.

This is more dependent on the tower distance near your home & its data signal strength, there are people for whom night time usage is only 1-2% ideal.
Do you feel if i flash a different firmware i would get a better battery life...

Usage with gprs usage of about 3o mins surfing, email sync, lil chat & fb i barely get thru the day and am at arnd 15-30% by 7pm.

Yea, full charge time is pretty long if you do not switch off your phone while charging.
Battery life in the long run depends if you have maintained a few golden tips for new batteries:
After unboxing, fully charge the battery in switched off condition. For the first 10-15 charge-discharge cycles, let the battery fully drain and the phone to automatically shut off. Then charge fully and switch on the phone. Avoid charging while phone is on or has quite a bit of charge.
I had a Nokia N91 and following above steps, the battery gave promising backup even after 4 years! Sadly, I lost the phone in Jan this year and bought the i9003.

Recently my i9003 bundled charger got fked up somehow... it just stopped charging the phone; had a few languishing days charging off the data cable off my laptop. Took to nearest service centre with a photocopy of the bill and it was instantly changed with a similar 700MA charger but of different shape.
Oh, I seemed to find a friend who is the tech there and jumped the long queue! LOL
I get about 24-28 hours battery life. I calibrated my battery after flashing to XXKB3 and I think that brought the best out of the battery. Running SuperPower and I mainly use Wi-fi while surfing.

how long is ur charge time with 700mA Charger?
I agree with the OP about seriously long time to charge! I had an X10 earlier and that used to fully charge in 2.5 hrs, but this takes really long. To just reach 100 from 90 it takes like about an hour!
well mine since i flashed 2.3.4 only stays for 18 hrs max with less than average usage only talk in for 1 hrs 2g maybe and browse use ebook for 1 hr maybe that is all when i used froyo 2.2.1 it used to stay for 1.5 day

after flashing xxkpm i seem to be blown away

well mine is jxkp3 cause it have arabic in it's languages but do u think this could be the reason why my battery is so low and fast drained it is also rooted

Hi everyone, I'd just like to ask what's the average battery life of the G Pro 2? I somehow feel my device drains really fast for what it's worth.
I had around 3 hours of run time and it went from 100% down to 85% with only 53mins of screen time. 2 of those 3 hours were used on 2g, text messaging only, when I got home i used facebook and wifi for about 30mins (but wifi connects as soon as i get home).
so I'd say around 15% after 3 hours of moderate usage. is this acceptable? though I'd like it to drain a little slower.
I'm currently on V20a Lollipop, rooted but stock everything. also the brightness was set to 20% the whole time.
Could anyone also help me out (like literally hold my hand) in choosing a lightweight, resource saving ROM? Kernels are a bonus but right now, it's a bit unsettling to see lollipop eat away 6gb of my already small 16gb internal storage.
My device is still 2 days old, so I'm still a bit jumpy with it xD thanks in advance!

just did another 3-hour monitor, right now I'm looking at 3h10min on battery and it dropped from 100 to 91%.
WIFI was on but I didn't use it, 50min screen on time with 15min of voice calls.
Is it just me or is Lollipop a bigger battery drain than kitkat?

You're pretty lucky, on an average I get 3 hours of usage from my phone. Legitimately from 100%-0%. On WiFi using only WhatsApp, playing a few rounds of a game and some music. Don't get me started on when I use it for navigation.
UPDATE:
I forgot to mention in my OP that i already had Amplify and Greenify and still had those kinds of stats.
Now I installed DS battery saver to drain the least amount of battery when I'm not using the phone, and so far it is GREAT.
Before I left for school (around 12:30pm local time) I was able to charge it to around 85% and as of writing (1:27am) it's sitting at 33% with 2hrs of screen on time. Note that those 2 hours I used for gaming, youtube, app downloading, and web browsing on wifi; I guess it's also important to note that I play really heavy 3D games (Maersk's quest for oil for instance).
Considering the load i placed on it for those 2 hours, I'd say battery life improved quite a bit, though not amazing, still a lot better than before.
When screen is off, it drains less than 1% an hour. I went to sleep 3:30am with 100% charge, woke up 10:30am with 96%, in 7 hrs i lost only 4% while the screen was off (compared to around 10% for the same amount of time before DS Battery Saver)

What rom are you using? i had a problem charging my Gpro2, it takes 4-6hours to fully charge.
i don't know if its a hardware problem or kernel/rom..
I'm using LP rom and rooted, i also use amplify, greenify and DS battery saver. i'll get back after after a few test this week, i'll check my cable, adapter then replace my battery if necessary

Using stock LP rom V20a but rooted. Are you using the charger and cable that came with the device? I believe it was rated 1.8A. I tried 3 setups since it was weird because it originally took me 3hrs to fully charge:
1.) New charger + cable (the ones that came with the phone)
2.) My old LG Optimus G's charger + new cable
3.) Optimus G's cable + new charger
I tried these setups out on the same outlet and the new charger+cable charged faster, but it was still around 2hrs or so. So I tried it on another outlet, one that we (my dad and I) attached, and voila, around 1hr 30mins to charge while on and even less that when the device is off; note those numbers are for 0~100%
We're just living in a rented house and some of the outlets are pretty old, and I bet delivers low current (possibly due to small wires) while the new outlets we attached used high-gauge wiring.
If you're charging slow with the charger and cable that came with the phone, try to charge at another outlet that uses high gauge wiring.
