Its going to replace an old PC I am using as a media centre
I plan to use XBMC and Netflix on these although I am aware there are some issues, I guess they will be ironed out in time.
I got a question about external hard disks.
If I have an external NTFS formatted 3tb hard drive full of movies.
I see that Paragon NTFS is available for android but not android 4.2 currently
I want to just plug the hdd directly into the host port and have XBMC see the stuffs, just like it does on my current PC setup.
Is it possible, Is anyone doing something similar?
I got two external drives connected to my newly purchased Minix Neo X7, a 320GB WD Portable Passport (1st gen) formatted with exFat, and a Cooler Master enclosure with a 400GB WD drive with NTFS, none of them show up in my android, all i get is a Safe to remove notification. Something tells me rooting will grant me extra options with a few apps available.

From the research I have done you certainly need root to use a NTFS 'reader' and maybe a specific kernel (see http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-hfs-android/index.html)
My TV Sticks are in transit so as soon as I have them I will of course work it out then post back a reply to my own question, assuming someone else does not answer it first.
I could just avoid all this and NAS my 3tb drive but thats an expense I would rather not incur.
Rooted the piece last night. Paragon mounted my poorly supported Cooler Master X Craft 360 straig away. For some reason exfat is not supported though, which is wierd cause both older paragon versions did and so should android 4.2 natievly, shouldnt it?
Yeah I heard exFat was supported too, its useful to know paragon worked.
still waiting for mine to arrive...

there are a couple of other tools that'll do the job as well like Chainfire's SitckMount http://goo.gl/T5TBTy
And for troubleshooting:
USB Host Controller http://goo.gl/fUq5ZS
DiskInfo http://goo.gl/qtgnOH
so far, no luck on exFAT , Paragon says "• exFAT evaluation mode - for OEMs only."
edit: Paragon app works in 4.2.2, dont know why it says it doesnt.

Does the asus transformer support using an external dvd drive? I tried connecting my external dvd drive to my transformer to watch a movie on disc but not sure where to go or what to do next.
Dead topic revival, but wanted to give the OP some information.
The asus transformer does not support dvd drives out of the box. Two things need to occur before we can watch dvd's on our transformers. The first is a custom kernel with drivers for external dvd drives and the correct file system support (this may actually already be built-in, but I haven't tested to find out). The second is a method to decrypt css on dvds.
Linux has a library that can do this written in either c or c++. In theory this can be ported to the Android eco system. There are existing questions about the legality of the library commonly used on linux for this decryption. In some countries it is definitely legal, in others, the courts have not tested its legality. I would also be willing to bet that a few companies (like the one behind powerDVD) will create dvd software with completely legal decryption in the hopes that Android users with 3.1+ will buy their software for dvd playback.
It is very possible that we will be able to get dvd playback at some point, but it probably won't happen for at least another few months. Best bet for now is probably linux (either chroot if that has access to usb, or dual boot).
External BluRay would be great
Device recognised, no filesystem mounted
If anyone (like me) found this topic by searching the web: My LG DVD drive is recognised on my Transformer. I can see it listed as Usbdisk1 under Storage in Settings. Mounting doesn't work however, so I suppose the biggest issue here is the filesystem (either CDFS or UDF). The drives LED flashes a few times when I try to mount it.
I copied my DVD movies to an external hard drive, connected the drive to the Transformer through the USB port on the keyboard dock and it worked perfectly without a problem.
I am trying to do what I thought was the most basic task but I am failing. I have some albums on a USB stick stuck into the dock that I would like to play. I have tried stock, PowerAMP, WinAMP but nothing works. The best I can do is to browse via File Manager and select a track but this will only play 1 track. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.
try ubermusic?
Also maybe bind mount your flash drive to the sdcard (Google it)

Yeah, easiest is to double-mount the drive to a folder on the sd, but you'll need the Android Media Scanner to reindex before it will show up.
There must be a music player that lets you set the home folder...
Instead of a usb stick use a sd card and card reader? Some of those are freaking small. I got a really tiny sdhc card reader that I carry around in my bag just in case someone elses laptop doesn't have a sdhc reader.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
And besides that, sd cards are cheaper then usb flash drives I think

All of my USB drives are now tiny USB card readers with MicroSD cards. Before I had that, I had a USB SD card reader that was slightly larger than a normal thumb drive. Maximum flexibility is my motto.
But it is a ridiculous shortcoming that you can't just plug a USB stick in and have it work the way it does on any PC. I dunno if it's Android, developers like Winamp or the Transformer, but its an absurd shortcoming.

Thanks for your help guys but I just cant seem to find any information on the net regarding bind mounting the usb to a folder on the SD card Could you point me in the direction of an explanation or site? I can find some useul apps in the Market but they all require Root which I am a bit apprehensive about doing. If I can avoid rooting for what should be a fairy simple task I would much prefer it. Any further help uch appreciated.
Wahooo! MortPlayer will allow you to set the library folder as \mnt\usbdisk1! Hope this helps someone. I am amazed I seem to be the only one needing this functionality. Thanks for your help guys.
When I had my Acer Iconia PowerAmp was able to see the files on my thumb drive. I had to tell it where the fioles were about four or five times before it took but it finally worked. I finally had to point it to the directory exit the app and restart it to get it to work.
No PowerAmp will only see files on SD card but not for some reason any mounted USB. As far as I know MortPlayer is the only player to allow you to index files from USB. Happy to be corrected though because whist Mortplayer is functionaly awesoe it is woefully lacking aesthetically!
Do you guys mean that I could by a USB sdcard reader and my nexus 7 would think it has a built in SD card slot? Or does it still treat it like any old USB stick?

My poweramp sees the usb drive in the dock fine.
Check the Poweramp settings for what folders it'll scan!

I tried using NTFS, FAT 32, still wont work!! and it works fine in USB stick plugin for Total Commander... probably coz I've picked this up from Aptoide!!!
The Nexus Photo Viewer works fine but the Media Importer doesnt
I have a "TX8" TV box running Android 6 Marshmallow with Amlogic S912 CPU and as media I have two hard drives enclosures Pro Mediasonic each holding 4 hard drives with media 2TB each with EXT4 format.
These media drives have been used with my old HTPC running linux and kodi and now I wish to use them with the new Android box but Android system does NOT recognize the drives. I purchased two apps/drivers that claim to recognize any format but does not work.
How I could successfully connect and use these hard drives?
Wrong forum. You need to find something directly related to Android TV boxen.
I have an issue I finally figured out but not sure how to correct it. To simplify things... I have a zenpad 8.0 with android 7 OS. I use a program called ONkyo HF Player. I use this with my car that I do sound quality competitions with. I run a USB Hub in the car to be able to add storage via thumb drive. This worked fine with my Samsung S2. I moved to a zenpad after someone stole my S2. It will not read the external USB storage inside of the Onkyo HF Player... but the tablet it self can see the drive just fine. When I look at where the program is looking.. it looking in /root where it can see my internal storage and my micro sd card. The USB drive just not show up in /root. I Think my issue is the way this tablet mounts the drive. I think it needs to mount in the /root directory. How can I fix this??? In order for me to be judged in IASCA and MECA the judge has to use a USB drive into my hub... I will be truly grateful for any advice as this is a huge deal for me.
Thank you !
