[Nook HD/HD+] Ultimate and hassle-free root for stock roms (2.2.0) - Nook HD, HD+ Android Development

I finally got to play a little bit with this. So if you are still with stock, needing root and suffering from shortcomings of the previous methods (where you cannot really modify anything directly on /system) - rejoice.
By flashing this zip (for stock only) you disable secure checks that trigger annoying bootloops. So while this does not really enable root all by itself, you will be able to ask CWM/TWRP to root your device and it'll stick. any other modifications to /system would be permissible too.
This also enables adb as root by default.
Enjoy.
- Nook HD+ (ovation) - flash this file: nookhd-unlocked-stock-emmc-ovation-2.2.0.zip
- Nook HD (hummingbird) - flash this file: nookhd-unlocked-stock-emmc-hummingbird-2.2.0.zip
Software updates would disable this back, so you will need to catch them and reflash an updated version, otherwise it'll see your changes to /system and panic again.
And a script that automatically creates these is also available.
History:
2013/09/08 - 2.1.1 stock unlocked

Awesome. Thanks for your work!!!

Sweet. Just in time because I was about to root my virgin hd+ the old way! Much thanks!

Thanks for this - I just got my Nook HD+ yesterday. How do you flash the file? Are there instructions anywhere?
Will this allow me to sideload apps?
Many Thanks

You flash it from CWM.
Once installed, before you reboot CWM it will ask you if you want to also root it, you answer that as you desire and that's it.
You will need to enable sideloading separately in the usual manner.
This zip just disables checks for /system and / that prevented you from adding and changing files from stock.

As verygreen said, no. But if you go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature, I have a zip there that enables Unknown Sources so you can sideload apps.

Helium Backup works with this, once SuperSU is installed. Thank you very much!

Flashed the zip, on reboot the cwm screen showed for a bit then it just booted normally. Tried flashing again, same result.

I flashed your zip followed by the 9/13 nightly for CM10.2 and the 4.3 version of gapps. When I press and hold the power button I don't see the option to boot to recovery. What's missing?

Wrong thread. This thread and zip is for stock..
But to activate the boot to recovery in CM10.2, go to settings, about table and tap the build number several times. That will activate the developer options. Go to that and put a check in advanced boot. Then you will see it after selecting reboot in the power off menu.

If, after installing this, for some reason I wanted to factory reset the device. Can I just do it, or will I have to carryout some steps prior to reseting?

If you want to go back to plain stock with the original boot.img file, you have a few choices. You can restore a CWM backup you made prior to flashing this zip, you can flash one of my plain stock zips from item 6 of my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature, or if you still have stock recovery installed, you can do the 8 failed boot procedure.

No you still got it wrong. You are totally confused.
THIS THREAD AND ZIP IS FOR STOCK!
Why are you flashing this zip and CM10.2?
This zip puts a new boot.img for stock so you can modify files on stock. It is not to put a new recovery on the device.
Go to the dummies guide for CM if you want CM to replace stock.

[Q] Can't upgrade to 10.6.1.14.10 in TWRP

Hi,
I'm no expert in flashing tablets but I have done a few phones in the past, but I'm stuck with a problem trying to get the firmware file (10.6.1.1.10) upgraded to my Jellybean 4.2.1 install, so that I can eventually get CROMI-X on my tablet. I had '10' on my TF700 via OTA and downgraded to '8' to get root (as per the CROMI-X instructions but I can't get '10' to load via TWRP, I just get "refresh failed. Please try again" I've tried shortening the filename-loading from SD card and Internal storage-redownloading the file but nothing changes. I did notice that when I boot into TWRP, it will say 'Updating partition tables' even before I attempt to flash the update and it will appear to be stuck at this point after checking the .md5 file.
Can anyone offer any suggestions or anything I can try without bricking the thing?

Any 10.6.1.14.x bootloader is compatible with CROMI-X 5.x, so you don't need to upgrade to .10.

So you think I can just go ahead and install CROMI-X now? For future reference, is the 'Updating partition details' in TWRP normal? I don't remember seeing this when I first installed.

To be 100% sure, check in the bootloader menu (before you select RCK) that your bootloader build version is 10.6.1.14.x, with x either 4, 8, or 10.

Okay, I redownloaded the ROM file and copied it to the SD...plugged it back in the tablet and booted into TWRP, ....now I see both! oh well, I installed the ROM and now have CROMI-X running on this baby! Thanks for your help and advice guys.
One small thing that I noticed, again with TWRP is that when I invoke the power menu, I don't get any options to boot to recovery...or anything non-standard for that matter. I think my TWRP might be broken, is there a way to uninstall/reinstall?
Thanks again guys.

TWRP on tf700t, you have only two options on the boot menu. One is a reboot to your system. Second is power off your device.
About the uninstall/reinstall, all you need is to flash the TWRP blob on top of your existing one....
Edit: I think that your TWRP is working properly. If you don't have to flash your custom recovery again, you can minimize the risk of brick your device. Please don't mess with your bootloader and your recovery unless you must touch them for a good reason. Otherwise, just leave them alone. Just my two cents....

Great, thanks for clearing up that doubt...and also for the good advice! I'm already enjoying the CROMI-X experience!

New to TF700, looking for help

I had a TF300T that I was unhappy with due to lagging/performance issues. I got a TF700T only to find similar issues which are now driving me to look into a custom ROM. It appears that a ROM by sbdags is the way to go but I have no idea which one. Can anybody give me a general overview of what the differences are between:
CROMi-X
CROMi-Xenogenesis
CROMBi-kk
I'm looking for something that is fast, stable and easy to update/maintain.
Thanks...Scott

CROMi-X is the same thing as CROMi-Xenogenesis. I recommend you start with this one as it is rock stable and fast. It uses the latest official Asus stock firmware as its base - JB 4.2.1. Grab CROMi-X 5.4 :good:
CROMBi-kk is our new experimental cyanogen based rom. If you like bugs and random things - flash this!
Yep CROMI-X is the answer to your need. Read carefully the first posts of its thread to understand how to install the rom and its prerequisites (very important) and then your slow-and-laggy stock rom will be forgotten and you will have a fast tab.

I've been reading up on the process and it appears that I need to downgrade from .10 to .8 in order for motochopper to root the device so that I can install TWRP. Is this correct or is there another way to install TWRP on an unlocked but not rooted device?
If I do need to downgrade, is it as simple as downloading the image from the Asus site, extracting the ZIP to /sdcard and rebooting or do I need to boot in some special way to tell the device to flash the downloaded image that I saved at /sdcard?
Thanks...Scott

No you don't need to downgrade as you don't need root
You can't install TWRP without unlocking.
So
1. Unlock
2, Install TWRP
3. Flash ROM
4. Enjoy a rooted fast device.

I managed to get CROMi-X installed but was surprised that all my apps and data were present after I rebooted. I assumed I'd be starting with a completely clean system. I did select the wipe cache options when flashing. Is there a way to reset the system to be a completely clean system with only the apps/data installed by the CROMi-X installer? Normally I'd do a "Wipe System" but from what I've read you're not supposed to do that with non-stock ROM's.
Thanks...Scott

Congrats!
With a custom recovery installed you do not want to wipe from 'Backup & Restore' in Settings or do 'Wipe Data" from the bootloader menu - you use the recovery to do it.
Enter TWRP, choose 'Wipe' and swipe the button. This will wipe all your apps but not your /data/media/ folder where your personal stuff is stored. TWRP calls this a factory wipe and it is a good idea to do when you switch roms (also called a "clean install").
If you want to erase everything on your data partition you would go to 'Advanced' and perform a Format Data. You may have to re-flash the rom after formatting data - anything installed to /data during the flash would be gone too.
Dirty flash: Flashing a rom with only wiping cache and Dalvik. Ok to do for flashing the latest and greatest update to your rom
Clean Install: Using the Factory Wipe in TWRP before flashing a new rom or major upgrade. Also helpful to do every once in a while to clear out the cobwebs. I do it about every 10 flashes
Format Data: The nuclear option and rarely used unless you have corrupted data or problems noobody knows how to fix
Familiarize yourself with the Backup/Restore function in TWRP and get Titanium Backup Pro. Makes the above a breeze

Although I managed to get everything working, the one thing I didn't understand about the installation instructions for this was that you first needed to install TWRP and then run Scott's installation batch file which seems to overwrite that TWRP with another recovery.blob. What's the point of installing two recovery images?

Tab 2 will only boot to CWM

So we were trying to update my friend's Tab 2 to a 4.4.2 ROM. We got CWM 6.0.2.3 installed, and tried a ROM. Well this failed, and appeared to break other stuff as it now boot loops to CWM. Actually I think it's going every other book to CWM. Right now it's saying battery depleated. I've got it plugged intoa charger, hopefully it'll take a charge.
I did later realize we weren't using a new enough version of CWM, but regardless, any ideas how to recover from this? It does not appear to be able to go into download mode. It only goes to CWM. I've tried flashing other ROMs but that doesn't seem to be working either.
So...kinda stuck for the moment.
Thanks!

We have a winner... the next one who didn't pay any attention - i.e. reading the OP post of the ROM thread.
ClockworkMod Recovery 6.0.x.y is ONLY for flashing CyanogenMod up to 10.1.3.
For flashing OMNI ROM or CyanogenMod 11 (both Android 4.4.2 at the time of writing) you _NEED_ to use TWRP (recommended for OMNI) or PhilzTouch Advanced Recovery or ClockworkMod Swipe Edition (recommended for CM11). See AndroidAndi's file repository to obtain a copy of the correct recovery for your particular model of the Tab 2.
Next thing to do: Download and install ODIN, install the "Samsung USB Drivers" (Google's your buddy), download the .tar.md5 of the recovery you want to flash (see above and make a choice), put the tablet into download mode, flash the recovery.
If that worked flash the custom ROM of choice (+gapps if CM11, +SuperSU if OMNI) through the custom recovery you just installed and be glad you didn't turn the tablet of your friend into a paperweight.

If you're down to "can't get it into download mode anymore" (I start to assume the attempt to flash some 4.4.2 ROM through CWM 6.0.x.x may overwrite partitions it's not supposed to overwrite) the only way left to breathe life back into the tablet is to resort to JTAG (UART port connection, CASUAL restoration package, USB Jig to force the tablet into UART mode).
If you search on XDA you will discover tons of threads by AdamOutler dealing with that topic, maybe that's useful to you in any way to figure out if that's an option for you.
Does it stay in CWM once it boots? If so you can copy a TWRP 2.7.0.x zip file to your SD card and install it from there.

easiest way to install TWRP is to use EasyFlasher. See instructions here: http://www.transformerforums.com/forum/asus-transformer-tf101-development/31927-frederuco-s-guide-root-rom-tf101.html
Actually got it to work myself. Apparently the CWM gets stuck in a boot loop and a little script (I found)in the terminal emulator fixes it right up. it then allowed me to replace it with the latest TWRP recovery and everything is working great.
Now have KatKiss 4.4.4 on my TF101 and it's perfect. The GPS is now working better then ever too!. Just wish I could put a SIM card in it and I'd be all set.

For the Sim card? That's the card to get cellular service on your phone or tablet if it's equipped. They had a TF301tg but it's locked to AT&T and I haven't heard of any being successfully unlocked yet.
As for memory cards I have a 16GB in the tablet and another 16GB in the keyboard. Both are so generic I don't recall who made them. and they worked right out of the box so I never formatted them.

Just download the appropriate zip and flash from twrp, reboot to Android, then reboot to twrp.

problems flashing TWRP 2.8.1
Hi. I have 2.3.2.3 version (the last version flashable using the app "TWRP manager") of TWRP recovery and I have to update to the version above to install Lollipop into my asus tf101. How can I flash this version 2.8.1.1 to my tablet? simply flashing it as .rar file with the recovery I still have (as a ROM)?
thank you!

I don't know where you downloaded the recovery. It is a .zip not a .rar.
And while reading the op you will notice the word flashable.
Just download the .zip to your device and flash it with your current recovery
Download flashable TWRP 2.8.1.1 zip for TF101:
signed_twrp-2.8.1.1_tf101.zip
TWRP 2.8.1.1 MD5 sum for TF101:
signed_twrp-2.8.1.1_tf101.zip.md5
Installation
Hello all,
Is it me or there is no guide on how to flash this? I'm running stock recovery and Android 4.0.3 and I'm root. There is no flash option on stock recovery.
Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance!

I can't seem to get this recovery working. I'm flashing it from TWRP 2.3.2.3 on a tf101g but, although the it reports a successful flash and I observe the blue-green bar on the next boot, if I try to boot into the new recovery, it just hangs. I do see an error regarding being unable to mount /staging immediately after the flash mind. Given that this is where the blob is flashed to, is that indicative of problems and can anyone suggest how I might resolve them?
If not, I wondered what the *oldest* twrp it's possible to flash the latest KatKiss from is and where I might find it?

Are you flashing a version built for tf101g? The main one is for tf101.

Yes, I'm using signed_twrp-2.8.1.1_tf101g.zip from the first post on the main thread.

Did you also download the corresponding MD5 file to the same directory to verify you have a good download? A corrupt file might still flash but won't work necessarily. It should be recognizing your tf101g as such unless I missed something.

Hmmm. Interesting. I had downloaded the md5 file and had checked that it matched manually by running md5sum on the zip file and comparing the result to the contents of the md5 file. However, if I force md5 verification in twrp, it says that the two don't match and aborts the procedure. Redownloading provides me with the same version of the file each time, as checked with diff.
Another thought: could the blob itself be corrupted? Would you be able to supply an md5sum for the blob for to me compare against? Thanks!

The MD5 supplied is for the zipped package, before it left my machine. If you, move both files to ext sdcard, or wherever you intend to flash from, and double check that md5sum matches the MD5 inside the MD5 file, after they are both in final flash from directory. I could extract the package and do an md5sum on just the blob, but if it's corrupted that won't really help you. You could also extract the blob to internal /sdcard directory and flash with adb shell per the rescue instructions from the first post of the thread.

I'm boot looping after merely doing a nandroid. How does that even happen? wiping cache/dalvik cache did nothing and restoring that backup or the last did nothing. I guess I'll try reflashing katkis 5.1 again. Kind of a pain.
Boot Loops With TWRP 2.8.1
Hi,
I have just installed TWRP 2.8.1 and with in flashed KatKiss 5.1.1 ROM on my TF101.
After I finished flashing everything and rebooted the device, I am stuck in a Boot Loop. Tried Cold Reset but it didn't work.
I did get the green progress bar at start up, but keep returning to the eee pad splash screen. cant boot to android.
Any advise?
Install TWRP recovery
Hi,
I downloaded "signed_twrp-2.8.1.1_tf101.zip", but I don't understand how to install it.
When I use TWRP manager, I get a list of TWRP version up to 2.3 only.
When I try to use adb & fastboot command tools, it seems I cannot enable fastboot on the TF101 : Running "adb reboot bootloader" actually restarts the device in the normal mode.
Can you please help me with this? How can I install TWPR 2.8?
Thanks!
how to install twrp in TF101G
Hi I have i TF101G but doesn't work 3G, the sim card is not dectected. Any Help?
I have root and Cmw recovery? How I install TWRP recovery? I need a guide, help me!
To those guys who were having issues getting twrp 2.8.1 on their tf101, I was having same problem. Here is how I got it to work.
1. Download all the 5.1 Roms, Gapps, SuperSu onto your SD Card
2.Download the tf101 TWRP 2.8.1 onto your SD Card.
3. Use Easy Flasher Unbrick/Flash Stock and Boot into Android. Shut down.
4. Use Easy Flasher to load the older version of TWRP that works.
5. Boot into Android, shutdown at the start screen again.
6. Boot into Recovery, and flash the latest TWRP 2.8.1
7. Make sure your tablet is disconnected from USB, and reboot into Android, it should say optimizing App 1 of 1.
8. After you're in the start screen, reboot again into recovery. It should now be 2.8.1.
9. Install the 5.1 Rom off your SD.
