Looking to reimage my S for a user that won't have a cell plan and only use for messaging on a wireless connection, some games (google app store access required), and some youtube. A simple, uncluttered user interface is important, battery life is important, stability is important. Having the latest android version support is not important. I will want to turn off the radio completely as the phone will not have a carrier.
It currently has a 2.6.35 kernel and is running an old Oxygen Mod that supports Android 2.3.7.
Any suggestions for a pocket tablet ROM?

I am trying to find a good tracking app for my phones and tablet that works. This is mainly for if it is stolen or misplaced.
Requirements:
-Must use data connection, NOT SMS!
-Uninstall must be able to be blocked. (System app or Device Admin setting)
-Live tracking, I want to see the phone moving once activated (not like prey where it runs a report then shows you).
-Siren function is nice but not needed.
-Free/cheap (I don't mind one time fees, but monthly fees $10 or under for at least 3 devices)
-Able to turn on GPS if disabled
-Accessible from any PC with internet.
I used to use mobile defense, but it doesn't work with Google Voice. I did how ever like the map that it used.
I currently have prey installed but it has quit working on my devices and I cant stand that it is not live updating maps.
I have tried a quite a few programs, but maybe they have updated to add the functionality that I need.
Device List:
Evo4g CM7 Rooted
Xoom Rooted
LG Optimums S Rooted
Thanks for the help!

I've got a very annoying data problem here: Sony Xperia S, Android 2.3.7 (Build .75), 500MB dataplan and the OS takes 300 of that! I already took some precautions like turning of the backup, I've logged out of Facebook and removed my Hotmail app. And I installed JuiceDefender Plus which handles my connections, but no results whatsoever: Android OS still uses 5-10MB/day...
Any help would be very, very welcome.
An application like Juice Defender won't help you lower data plan usage because its first aim is to prevent battery depletion while meeting certain conditions (like screen turned off, for example.)
This means that when you turn on the screen and Juice Defender restores mobile data, Android does broadcast a message (android.net.conn.CONNECTIVITY_CHANGE) to all registered listeners, that let them know when they can use the network again.
As a example, think of an email client that will access its configured POP/IMAP servers when it can. No matter how long the screen was off (and thus mobile data disabled by Juice Defender,) it will always download the same amount of data when your device is put back on line (luckily for you I would say in the case of an email client because if it were not the case, that would mean you're losing mails...)
When it comes to data accounting, Android simplifies things a bit too much, and you end with not very insightful labels like "Android OS." This may indicate that the Google apps framework (a standard package shared among different applications) is the one using your data plan.
I wrote an app that accounts data used by process rather than package, and let you know the associated packages with each process and also showing real-time network usage graphics along with many other real-time data to workaround those kind of limitations (as I don't want to make publicity -- even if it's free -- PM me if you're interested and I'll point you to it.)
cheers

I faced the same problem, issue was somewhat with auto backup of data, sync of app data & people details in google account,
BUT the main culprit in my case was uTorrent application.
Even though there was no torrent added to it, i didn't even opened it,
it was using 1GB data daily on WiFi and in data usage it was coming under Android OS usage. I uninstalled it, everything went back to normal.
So try to look for such apps which eat up your data in background, it may not be an error of android OS as such.
Hope this helps, Press THANKS if it did help you
Enjoy
I will note that my phone gets used for phone calls, texting, occaisonal data usage for MMS messages. But i *dont* use gps, maps, bluetooth,
really the only thing "google" i actually use is the play store... ive even deleted gmail since if i want to email someone that badly ill just use the browser version - or wait until im at a real CP.
I really am a bare bones type of user, and would love to optimize battery by disabling stuff that could be running that i never take advantage of.
ill make notes to make sure i can re-enable them if i ever do get a data plan and want gps or whatnot working.
but for now im not paying extra for all that, so im a bare bones user, aside from a few wifi games. the play store to download those games is all i truly need working... and stuff about the OS itself but, im not sure how to tell what is needed for what.
any lists, specifically for samsung captivate glide running stock but rooted 4.0.4 rom?
Thanks
This question ate up my whole night, let me explain.
Imagine Android 7.0 Nougat. If I edit/tweak the ROM completely with added features, tweaked Kernel, less bloatware and other custom features. Can it still be called an Android? It's a custom ROM that I built, just like CMOD or so.
If so then why will I still have to pay for licensing? The problem is not actually the price but the limits which Google enforces such as a must have Play Store app and all that, comes with it. I don't want it in my ROM but Google forces it, in order to get the licensing. But if I can't tweak freely and redistribute it then how is Android truly an open source project.

You build it without Google apps. You (and other users) can add gapps with any of the available packages. Yes it's still Android.
Lol, just because you customize the rom doesn't mean that it's not Android that's the beauty of Android is it can be customized if you have a car and you add all this cool stuff to it does it all of a sudden become a boat or a shopping cart no it is still a car in the same model you bought just like Android will still be Android no matter how much you mod it

Hello.
I plan to turn my phone as "dumb" as possible, leaving only apps that are absolutely necessary and practical, essentially making my phone as minimalistic, simple and distraction free while at the same time maximizing the hurdle to install new apps due to the lack of willpower aswell as the general battery life.
I have the POCO F1 with LineageOS 19.1, root is currently enabled via Magisk.
I considered just buying a regular dumb phone, but unfortunately I do not feel they are worth it; plus I'd want to still use Spotify.
I'd greatly appreciate ideas/solutions for this particular project. Thank you in advance!

What you'd like to do isn't really "dumbing down" XD - it is simply making a "barebones Android" phone with only the apps/functions you need without usual bloat that comes preinstalled on the new devices. This is in fact something a lot of people on XDA are passionate about, as it helps optimize for space, speed, battery life and privacy.
For the Android phone to be considered usable in modern day and age, it needs a handful of apps:
Dialer
SMS messenger
Contacts
File manager
Gallery
Clock
Calendar
Calculator
Web browser
Camera
Installing vanilla LineageOS rom (or any other rom with no GoogleApps) will give you this default Android experience. For 99% of tasks that do not involve Google this is enough.
However, most people want something more than just a dialer, and so phone manufacturers pre-install some other stuff for them: Google (play store, chrome, maps, drive, mail), Payment (Samsung Pay), Gallery/Music apps, social media apps, fancy wallpapers etc. This is what makes the phone "smart" for you, I guess?
In case you want to cut it down further, you can use adb to remove certain apps from this list. This includes certain system apps too, like unnecessary fonts or accessibility services (web search is your friend here). Theoretically the phone can serve as a GSM calling brick only with the following:
Dialer
SMS messenger
Contacts
But then you'd be doing the hardware a misservice - why lug around Octa-core 8GB RAM 4000mAh HD TFT6.1" 999GB device if you could achieve the same with a Nokia 1100 or 3310? These are still being sold
UPDATE: Just saw your additions about Spotify. If you only want to use the phone for Calling/Web browsing/YouTube/Spotify, go with the "Install No GApps LineageOS -> Sideload apps you need and nothing else".
Word of WARNING though: a lot of popular messaging/steraming/quality of life (maps) apps APSOLUTELY DEPEND on google ecosystem (i.e. GApps like google play, google play services and google services framework).
WITHOUT GOOGLE THESE APPS WILL LIKELY CRASH or won't work as intended. I.e. Whatsapp will not give you "New message" notifications and will not ring UNLESS you have it open in your face right when the call comes in. Delivery/Ride sharing apps that need google maps will not show you the map. Facebook messenger will has the same problem as Whatsapp. List of risks is far too long, and you will need to have an idea of whether the app requires google and whatsnot.
Therefore Make absolutely sure that barebones phone is what you want. If it is, a lot of apps that reliably work with the barebones setups can be found on Fdroid.
Despite having "dumb" in the name, this procedure requires one to be amazingly smart about it
To conclude, you have the following ways of achieving this:
1. Install no-Gapps (i.e. "vanilla") lineageOs, delete what you wont need, sideload .apk of apps you are after
2. Install stock android rom, then Degoogle and Debloat it. Guides for your particular model can be found here on XDA
3. Install SlimROM, a custom Android distro whose developers had the same idea as you did, i.e. optimized for simplicity.

This is really interesting. I am thinking of trying to do this with a Google pixel 4a. Would I be able to do the lineage OS with that? I haven't found other threads that speak on this topic, am I right? Thinking that I would like to customize exactly what apps I have on the phone etc.
LineageOS for Google Pixel 4a exists:
