I've spent hours trying to work this out myself, with help from posts on this site, but failed.
I've got an old htc desire c which I've unlocked and rooted. The problem I have is that when I download a zipped custom rom I can't find the 'boot, img' anywhere in the folders. I've dowmloaded, and looked for it in, several different roms.
What am I doing wrong.
I've got a basic grasp of the process, I've also unlooked, rooted and, successfully, flashed a rom to a Wildfire.
Thanks

if the boot.img(kernel) is not included in the zip then you should search for the compatible kernel..
be specific, which rom are u trying to install?
and can you give me the thread? may be it has something there telling about some kernel..
or
just search for the kernel according to the jellybean rom or ics rom or gingerbread rom..
try flashing different kernels until you get the most compatible one.

Thanks for reply.
I've since found a rom with the boot.img included, Sensational, which has a basic sense 5 look.
Flashed and working ok, cheers.

I may be wrong but I don't believe any ROMs work with our phone yet. What I did in the mean time was just root using the fastboot method and flash CWM. Works like a champ
that's funny because netarch said last week they would work.
2.3.4 stock rom please devs!
The kernel works (I have it on my phone) as netarch stated, but rom's I *BELIEVE* are not compatible

I said the kernels should work fine, and roms possibly.
On closer inspection of a system dump from an ns4g there are some differences that will prevent current custom roms from working properly.
I'd need a guinea pig with an ns4g to assist me in testing to find out the exact changes necessary to make them compatible.
Atm there are at least 2 files I've found that would need to change.
You can go ahead and flash Net's kernel and start overclocking though!
I ended up getting so used to stock 2.3.4 rom that I am still on it!

Thats what I used. The rom is ready, but you will have to still flash superuser in recovery. I dont think the script is right. Im not really a dev after all Just wanted this, so I made it happen...

Did you have any trouble deodexing any of the apks? Mine keeps failing on NetworkLocation.odex. I just pulled the apk and odex files out of the origi_app folder to get around it.
Ok, so this is a stock deodexed ROM for the NS 4G. I am not a dev, you flash this at your own risk. With that being said, Im running it and I havent found anything wrong...yet. It does have netarchy's bfs kernel, you will need setcpu to oc, it is good up to 1.4. Your phone may not be. Do not check set on boot in setcpu until you know your phone is stable. You WILL have to flash superuser in recovery, you can flash it right after you flash the ROM, no need to reboot. So, here it is...
O yea, I added spare parts, CM file manager, and CM mms.apk so it doesnt have to be white...

If I switched from an AOSP Rom to a Sense ROM, should I just flash the new rom? or should I go back to stock, and then flash the sense ROM?

You can go directly between the two. Just do a full wipe when changing ROMs.
captivating
Only go back to a stock restore if you really f'ed things up, and then restore another ROM from their....

I'll probably take a beating for saying this...
Just recently I switched from TPGB (AOSP) to AR HD (Sense) with no problem. I had to format to ext4 for ARHD before I flashed, but that was easy enough.
I was on ARHD for a long time, then wanted to try out an AOSP ROM and was using TPGB (which I love!!), but then I wanted to start playing around with the Kingdom lock screen and other Sense 3.0 mods that were available, so now I'm back to ARHD and loving it as well. I will say it's not as snappy as TPGB was, but I've installed Leedroid's kernel on top of it to give me a little more OC ability and it's doing wonderfully!
Wow really!!! First things first most roms state in the install instructions what you need to do. Second you should have asked this in the dev section under ther ROM your interested in. Flashing roms is never the same from rom to rom. You must read the devs instructions.

I've never seen a chef tell you that you have to flash back to stock before you flash their ROM. That was the question. It wasn't ROM specific. He wanted to know if you could switch from an AOSP ROM to a Sense ROM without first flashing back to stock. The answer is yes, you can, and the question was asked in the proper place.

Say what you would like. The question was about installing a rom. If you read the instructions on how to install the rom you want then it will tell you how to flash it. Which would have answered his question. To be honest I also don't know a single rom that you have to flash back to stock in order to use a different rom (not saying there isn't one just don't know of any you should read the instructions to be sure your flashing properly). There I answered the question the way you would have liked to see it. Thanks for being the op's voice. Again installing any rom is not the same from rom to rom read my comment before criticizing it (I gave him the correct answer just not the way you wanted to see it). If your interested in a rom read the instruction. And your not the first person to have a problem or question for that matter search search search.
P.S. Since you cant say that flashing every rom is exactly the same then it is a rom specific question.
ok, so I picked up the Cappy tonight, did alot of reading,
PLEASE NOTE, I have a Rogers Galaxy S Captivate SGH-I896, On Froyo 2.2
I successfully rooted the device with superoneclick,
downloaded Rom Manager, Flashed Clockwork recovery for Galaxy S Captivate
Reboot to recovery, select re-install packages, FAILED Signature...and aborts,
What am I doing wrong here?
Is there a better method? Every guide I read said to do it with rom manager...do I need to flash the stock rogers GB with bootloaders? then retry clockwork again?

you didnt actually SEARCH for the ACTUAL ERROR MESSAGE that you got?

Thanks thats exactly what i needed, i now have cm7 loaded up.
one question tho, while cm7 would install fine i initially tried to flash the ICS port by teamhacksung and it resulted in a bootloop, is there some step im missing? are someupdates only installable from internal sdcard?
You must be on a mtd based rom, which cm7 is, (touch wiz roms are bml based) before flashing to ics. U should be able to flash ics with no problem now.

ok will give it another shot!
Enjoy, it's quite different
Well, ics successfully flashed this time.
Only difference from my last attempt was I flashed a cm7 nightly instead of stable, also once on cm7 I flashed a newer radio as well as the glitch kernel. Dunno what had affected it before but its now running nicely on ics build 9.
Thanks for the help guys, I guess where I got hung up is where cwm resides in the kernel on this device? Where on all my htc's we simply flash cwm over the stock recovery. Anyways thanks again!

The glitch kernel is not compatible with ics, as of yet. It was over written when u flashed ics I'm pretty sure.
Well being completly new to this device was a lot of learning, I still have no idea what I did wrong initially to get stuck in bootloops, but I somehow managed to get cm7 working and then up onto ics so all is well as far as I can see now. Its a backup device for us so I'm pretty sure I will only be flashing ics as it matures. Must say the ics on the cappy is pretty far ahead in terms of usability compared to the desire z, great work here from your devs! And thanks for the pointers guys!

So i'm assuming stock, and what theme are you trying to install? If its a Theme Engine theme in .apk format, like something you got from the market, then you would need a AOSP based ROM like CM7. If its a theme you downloaded somewhere else, and its in .zip format, then you need to specify which theme and/or where you got it from. Installing themes depend on if they were made for your ROM/phone.
Thanks for the info, is there a write up or section that tells me what is needed to install the cm7rom
thx

If you never modded your g2x before, that means you probably have the stock recovery, you need ClockWorkMod Recovery to flash anything custom, ROMs, kernels, etc. Read this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
It will walk you through flashing the latest CWM Recovery. Read and follow the directions carefully. When you have CWM Recovery flashing and working properly, then you can visit the Android Development section and find CM7 official, or a nightly. Good luck
As per title, ive just bought a One S and im looking a for a ROM that is similar to stock but has improved performance features. Ive done some research and I have Trickdroid http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1637102 and Android Sense Stock http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2065357.
Are there any others that I may have missed?
Also as both of these are JB roms, i presume there is no flash? Does this mean if certain sites have youtube or flash content, they will not work? Is there a workaround for this?
Thanks

Not too sure on ROMs as I use CM10. However, you can install Flash manually from the APK provided here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1931671
I use this myself.
