I have been having terrible signal on my Verizon XT926 since switch to CyanogenMod. I originally flashed to an unofficial branch of CyanogenMod a few months ago after a Verizon OTA started forcing my phone to constantly reboot and the bootloader had been unlocked.
I have a feeling it might be my baseband, as it has the Moniker VANQUISH rather than CDMA_N that seems to be the standard. Is this normal or did I end up with a baseband of another phone from the same SoC branch? Here are some of the problems I have:
- The radio signal is unusually weak. It never gets above -100 dBm when it used to be able to get to -70 dBm easily.
- The standard choice of lte/CDMA/evdo/gsm/wcdma is unavailabe from the testing settings.
- The phones will only run on the "Cellular" radio band. The "USA" band does not work.
If I am indeed on the wrong baseband, does anyone by chance know where I can flash the right one from?
Thanks in advance!

alright I am completely overwhelmed after reading the modem thread. I am running Serendipity 7 on my captivate. Kernel version 4.1 and running the stock modem that this rom comes with (JV6 i believe). I am on WCDMA 1900 Band 2. I can flash roms and what have you, but when it comes to all this modem talk I am a noob.
My question to you guys is, how do i know if i should update my modem. I seem to be getting signal strengths between -80 and -90. I did a speed test and results are 2.55mbps up/1.65mbps down. Numbers seems good. GPS has never worked for me no matter what rom i am running. Since location seems to be a big thing in modem selection, I am located on the east coast in PA.
I love this rom and want to maximize my phones capabilities, only reason i am looking into this modem thing.
Well I'm on the latest CM nightly (CM 10.1 -20130312) and I just came from CM 10. I tried CM 10.1 before but I had little to no signal and I've decided to give the latest nightly a chance and well, I still have the same problems as before. I flashed the 3.18 radio on it and it literally made NO difference at all. I hate the AT&T variant of the phone. On the CM 10 version I didn't have this problem but there were times that I'd go half an hour to a full hour without getting any texts and then they'll all come in at once (and I know its no coincidence because some of those messages contain people wondering why I haven't replied yet). So can anyone help me with this problem please?? I really like CM 10.1 but not having any mobile data and an even worse signal is a REAL deal breaker for me.
I was having the same issue until I went into settings and changed it to GSM/WCDMA.

I used to be tech support for att. Obvious question: has this happen before? Now to put my xda hat on. Did you change APN settings? Is this the only rom you flashes? Also call att (611) and have them cancel registration. This basically kicks you off the network and bring you back on. Sim cards are not the issue as the are unable to determine signal strength. Hope you get it fixed.

I think it has something to do with the 3.18 radio. I never had problems until flashing it. I have tried multiple roms. Sense based and aosp. It happens on both although it seems to be worse on aosp. I went out of state and lost signal completely while running the latest Chameleon. I went into settings and as soon as I stopped it from searching for LTE it went to full signal. Maybe a tower upgrade issue? 3.18 radio issue? I guess it's something for devs to look into. I know not all towers are the same. 3.18 maybe conflicting with the area he is in. Somebody will get it figured out lol.

That's just weird. I flashed 3.18, and still get the same coverage (4-5 bars, 6mbps data). I don't see how it can effect you. The device is dual HSPA+/LTE. So if the device cannot find LTE, it will always back (circuit switch fall back). Even when I went to an LTE area (Nashville, TN), it still work perfectly. Could be something up with the physical radio inside of the phone. The LTE towers are suppose to be backwards compatible, but we know how companies can be. If your device is working in one area, and not the other, then it is a tower issue. Even though AT&T may find that their towers are ok, it is a tower issue, and there is no doubt around that. Now if it just gives you random coverage, no matter where you are, then it is the phone itself.
Having the same issue on CM. Just tried changing to WCDMA and my signal doubled. That is weird but thanks you guys.
I sideloaded the 4.4.1 update. However now the network signal is a lot weaker than before. At home I used to have full signal, now is 2 to 3 bars.
I'm in Italy with 3 IT. Anyone experienced that?

i don't see any .so files related to the ril or radio... i didn't look too hard either so i may have over looked them... so looks like the only change was the actual modem radio.img so you should be able to revert just the radio by fastboot flashing through adb with the stock image files...
I experience the same issue but on the 4.4.1 thread someone said there should not be any changes in the radio. I thought I am alone
Yeah I'm getting similar now...
In my house I had around 3 bars in LTE, but now I'm regularly at 1 bar, with the occasional drop down out of LTE to H/3G.
That sucks because other than that I'm loving the 4.4.1 update.
I guess they did change the radio....

Noticed the same with my LTE signal, I don't get signals where I used to and it shows a lower signal when I do connect.
Same

Same here. I put my phone in the exact same spot on my desk every day at work. Usually I have 3 - 4 bars of LTE and it just stays at 1-2 now.

Yeah it did M8974A-1.0.25.0.23
I'm getting stupidly low dBm now... -110 to -125.
Is it possible to flash back the 4.4.0 radio?

Yep, grab the 4.4 image from https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#hammerhead.
Extract the radio.img
Flash it with fastboot.
fastboot flash radio radio.img
Done.

It says : not supported in locked device
I didn't unlock the bootloader.
Oh bleep! I was going to side load it today, now I'll wait. I barely get any signal, ,in a rural area and all. Get 3G off and on hspa. I was hoping for better signal from the update.
This sux. Now I'm scared I won't get any signal at home. I barely get any signal as it is (0 - 1bars or -114dBm)...hope this faster camera is worth it.

Unlock the bootloader and it will go through just fine.
oh boy...this is NOT good news as I am barely getting a signal at all now.
Are you folks sure about this low or poor signal, etc. as a result of flashing the newest radio? We have 2 N5 (US models,) black 16G from production batch 310 and white 16G from production batch 311 - both running rooted stock rom, on KOT49E and KRT16M respectively. Running tests from the same identical spots to T-Mo 4G LTE tower nearby, the KOT49E both from the 4.4 radio and after flashing the 4.4.1 new radio - I am seeing no significant difference in dBm and asu - with a variance of 1 to 3 dBm. No missed or dropped calls, yet.
Word of caution - this is only for T-Mo here in NYC, results & findings could vary for other carriers like AT&T and Sprint.
If results are unsatisfactory, it doesn't "hurt" to do a clean install from stock image after a full wipe/factory reset, IMO.

1. The signal was fine BEFORE applying the 4.4.1 update
2. The signal pretty much dropped AFTER applying the 4.4.1 update
3. It doesn't take a scientist to connect the step 1 and 2.
Let me put it simple: for 10 days the signal was constitent/fine up to 2 minutes BEFORE performing the update. After the update it dropped.
I am not performing factory reset for testing purposes. The case is clean.
Hello,
I bought my Nexus 5 on the 11th of December 2013 and it had been working flawlessly ever since. Since last week, I started noticing the occasional signal drop and I'd be out of cell reception but would usually be back up within no time. However, yesterday, out of the blue I'm travelling on the highway and my signal strength disappears never to come back again. I've tried the following:
- Restore old backup (including EFS)
- Went back to stock from PA
- Upgraded to the latest radio
- Took back cover off to see if anything was wrong but found nothing.
- Tried another SIM card
Nothing worked. My SIM card works fine in another phone. Everything else such as WiFi and Bluetooth works flawlessly but I just don't get any reception.
This is very disappointing and I have my fingers crossed hoping someone can help me with this since I didn't plan on getting a new device for at least another year especially after paying $520 USD for my phone here in my country.
Thank you for looking.
im having a similar problem with the radio after the last few otas. im getting a lot of dropped calls on 3g aws...
im going to try to revert to an old radio as i don't think this is a hardware failing issue..
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
Flash stock firmware with fast boot. If its the same, its a carrier issue....call them to see. Or its hardware failure.
just wanted to post my fix for this issue - very disappointed with Google that i had to do this...my provider is mobilicity canada (3g aws band fyi)
flash krt01b radio from this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2514095
this is *not* a carrier or hardware issue (at least in my case)
seems others are having same issue
https://code.google.com/p/android/i...s Owner Summary Stars&groupby=&sort=&id=70878
Then it is a carrier issue....cause on Telus in Canada....never had an issue with any radio version. ?
telus would have a stronger overall signal but uses AWS band for lte which is different than mobilicitiy 3g aws...
I'm not disagreeing.... Just saying its the carrier....not Google.
See my point?

are you saying mobilicitiy is purposely weakening their cell signal cause they are almost bankrupt ?
i still blame google i had no issues with the radio before they borked it...

Just saying that unless many have the issue with the phone or radio, then its an issue.....if not, it isnt .
So in this case, it leaves hardware or carrier....assuming a stock flash didn't help.
If flashing another radio helps the OP...awesome!! But the new radio does work fine for the mass majority.
Hope it does work for him tho!
Greetings,
First off as general context, the greatest complaint that I have had with the Nexus 5 has always been its radio and I've been a user since Nexus 5 launch. I am a Canadian user on the Rogers network, and I have found many areas that other phones (any of the iPhones, Samsung Note 2, Samsung S4, HTC One m8) receive signal on the Rogers network (at least 2 bars) while I have zero reception. Most of these areas are basement level areas or complete concrete buildings. Has anyone else encountered this problem? This is especially annoying as I tend to be in basement areas often.
Second off, I am a rooted user on Carbon ROM for 4.4.4 KitKat but running 4.4.2 radio. I've found that the 4.4.4 radio was highly unstable for me, losing signal every few minutes or so while being in areas where I receive full bars and remaining stationary. Thus I reverted to 4.4.2 radio only and it fixed my problem. Now that 5.1 build is out, I would like to update only my radio and bootloader for 5.1 as I am not ready to enter Android 5.x with the memory leak problems and other features. All i would like to try out is mainly the radio to see if it fixes my first issue. Would flashing only the radio and bootloader of 5.1 be okay? I'm not sure if there is some sort of problem with flashing radios and bootloaders of a whole different build (5.x onto a 4.x). Thanks.

The bootloader and radio are separate from everything else on the Nexus 5, you can use any version with any version of Android.
