[Q] How to install custom recovery after root? - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

first things first. I'm a noob. HAHA. but i'm willing to learn.
I recently rooted my phone by using chainfire's CF-AUTO-ROOT and it has stock recovery on it. Now, I want to install a custom recovery, specifically cwm recovery. How will be able to do this? Do I have to unroot then root again? a step by step info will be appreciated. thanks

First of all find a cwm file for ur device specific to the model u have on google. Flash it with Odin n u will have the recovery.

done finding cwm file that's compatible with my tab
Flashing? not really that well with android terms yet. after clicking "pda" then selecting the cwm file, should I click start? is that what you meant by flashing?
I appreciate your help.

Yeah first go to download mode holding power and volume down button and select the file in the PDA section n just click on start. And wait till pass. appears on the Odin screen. That's it.

Or could just download rom manager and do it from there. Mush easier for a noob

I also would like to install cm 10.2. is it stable? I tried searching and I found pac rom and if i'm not mistaken 3 custom roms are installed into 1 rom.
I also would like to ask if it is really necessary to wipe all data before installing a new rom? and if so, would apps like titanium backup pro would be able to backup every single app or information that is in my tab/

Yeah u have to wipe cache and dalvik cache. 10.2 nighties r stable. No issues with me.

Your thread is changing direction but I can't resist commenting anyway. If your tablet is rooted, stock I don't think you will see big benefits to a custom ROM. For other tablets I use like the Kindle, Nook and N7 custom roms can make a huge difference. I'm running CM 10.? Or variants of that on those devices. My most used tablet is this 2.7 with stock ROM. If you must try another ROM, I'd suggest a sick based ROM that is deodexed with sound or visual enhancements. Also, changing to a noon, Touchwiz launcher will make big differences. GOOD LUCK!
P.S. quess what a ROMaholic might be.

Updating ROMs

I've looked around for a little while and can't find any thread that says how to go from one build of a custom ROM to another... I feel extremely noobish asking this as well. I'm on build 11 of bean's custom JB ROM and there have been three new builds and I'm wondering if I need to do a full wipe as if I were flashing a ROM from stock, or if I just go ahead and do a dirty flash... Thanks in advance for the help

It's really at your own discretion. You can dirty flash, but you might have issues, but clean flashes are always the best path to take. Although, sometimes the devs do recommend a clean flash on some releases when they change something major.

Personally I always dirty flash. A couple of times I've encountered problems, made a backup then wiped to troubleshoot the problem, but its never fixed anything so I just revert to my backup. YMMV
Just read and follow the install instructions for the specific rom.

The OP usually tells you what you need to do. If there are major changes, they will tell you to wipe. Sometimes, dirty flashing is okay, just make sure that you follow the directions from the dev that created the ROM.

But if you encounter errors after dirty flashing, always do a full wipe and reflash before reporting them.

Just dirty flash it. Backup your apps and etc... prior just in case you do run into issues.

Format and flash.
As a general rule, I do an App backup (I tend to like My Backup Pro for app backups), a full nandroid backup, then dirty flash (wiping dalvik/cache) and see how it goes. Best case, everything works and I save myself a ton of time not having to restore apps/reapply settings. Worst case, if I have problems that don't seem to be generally reported, I do a full wipe and clean install.

(Q) Brick bug?

I'm rooting a friends at&t skyrocket tomorrow that is on official ics update from at&t and was wondering if that brick bug was still present.I know i might be a little late with this. I was told by a friend that it was only present on the ics leaks for this phone and just wanted to make sure now that this has official ics that i won't have any problems worrying about a brick on my hands by wiping data factory reset in cwm. Go easy on me please I was on the OG evo when all of this brick stuff happened so I never payed much attention to it

Regardless, wiping data/factory reset using cwm won't effect anything. I'm pretty sure that problem was the result of wiping in the phones settings menu (if I remember right).

Honestly, i'm not sure. I never really worried about it. Always use CWM for wiping and never had a problem with anything.
I think it happens when you try to format the internal SD card. Its an emmc bug (I think) but I don't have the bug and my i777 doesn't have it. I thought it was on the specific kernel for the i777 and the international variants.

Just follow the sticky here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1652398
Once you get it rooted with CWM, i'd suggest updating CWM to this version - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1777970
If you're looking for the JellyBean version of AOKP, i'd really suggest this - http://rootzwiki.com/topic/34092-aokp-unofficial-galaxy-s-ii-skyrocket-i727-nov-04-milestone-1/
As far as flashing it, I:
-wipe data/factory reset
-wipe cache
-mounts & storage [format /system]
-advanced [wipe dalvick cache]
-flash rom
-flash gapps
-reboot
*you can do these x2 or x3 each if you wish just to be sure everything is clear*
Hopefully some of this will help if you already don't know any of it. Any other questions, shoot me a pm if you need or i'm sure someone here can help.

Ah ok... So there should be no problem updating from one nightly to another.
But to be safe make a nandroid backup before updating. Personally I never used the updater. Just downlod the nightly the usual way (or use the updater to download the rom) and flash it in recovery. Wipe cache and dalvik prior to that.

I do not need to factory reset, right?
And I need to do is install the zip from sd card and that's all? No gapps installing?

No need for factory reset as long as there are no problems afterwards. So make a nandroid to be on the safe side.
GApps will be backuped and restored during the update process so no need to reflash them. Again: As long as there are no problems with it afterwards.
So just downlod the rom, boot to recovery, make nandroid backup, wipe cache and dalvik cache and then flash rom.

[Q] its not possible flash any custom roms

Hi everybody, i got seriously problem. I tried all possible solution to flash my i9003 but without any results. Anytime when i try install any zip file with Custom Rom my phone just write message Can't open /sdcard/RemICS.....zip (bad)
Instalation aborted....
What is wrong with it???? Its Galaxy i9003, reflashed with Odin to Gingerbread DDLF2, with root and Custom Recovery. Iam wanna throw it tru window Any ideas please??? I could not find anything when i google it. thanks for any advice.
Try another rom like resurection Remix or cm10.1 alpha9.

don't format system after flashing ddlf2.
directly install 10.2 or any custom rom over it.
procedure =
1) flash ddlf2
2) root it
3) go to recovery and directly install 10.2 or any rom you like.
4) wipe data/reset. (optional)
(don't format anything or else it will give you
that error)
hope this helps you.
thanks
very thanks people, i did it exactly as you recomended, but still i got the same error its my first phone what i can not flash...very sad But thanks for your advice.
Are the Roms that you're trying to flash based on 4.3?
If yes in CWM recovery go to "mounts and storage" and mount all that is unmounted.
Than flash the Rom.
It worked for me.
You can even try to redownload the Rom file, it can be corrupted.
Cheers

Second, wipe everything except SD card ( dalvik, cache, system, boot, data)

You can't dirty flash a 4.3 rom over a 4.2 rom like you did since the gapps are not compatible. It causes all sort of force close like you have. Do as Setting.Out said and make sure you download the correct gapps for 4.3. Flash them after you flash your rom.
