Bootloop at BMS splash, TWRP 2.6.0.0 asking for password & no data listed, HELP! - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I've posted this in the GideonX BMS kernel thread of the androis development section as well. Hope someone can help. . I'm currently,or I was up until tonight, running Chris123NT's variation of the 10.2 unofficial build dated 8/29 with GideonX's 8/15 kernel. Its been running fine fore 2 days. Today I went on a hike and used my tracks, the stock camera and the focal camera. At about 9pm I decided to reboot the phone, I was having some problems with ford sync and iheartauto. This has been, what appears to be, a fatal mistake. The phone hung in a bootloop at the BMS splash screen. When I try to use twrp 2.6.0.0 it immediately asks for a password, which I've never set, and if I hit cancel it appears as if there is no data on the internal or external storage. Am I up craps creek? I've search for info on this and came up with very little other than some buzz about a hard brick. Sure hope thats not the case and someone can help. I'd been running masta's builds and gideonx's builds until the other day when I hoped to get some RIL lovin' in Chris' new build. Please help!

Well you definitely aren't hard bricked, and you're still rooted and unlocked or the Verizon triangle would come up.
See if you can Google "twrp password" or something similar, maybe there's some kind of default password it's asking for.
If nothing comes up, Try to find an Odin flashable file of twrp, as recent as you can find. See if you can overwrite the recovery partition and at least get to a backup to restore from.
As a last resort, boot into download mode and Odin back to stock. You'll lose all your data but at least you'll have a working phone.

Seems that I'm at the end of my rope here. Tried to reodin TWRP, that didn't work. Just tried to Odin a no wipe stock 4.1 and that is froze up as well. I'm downloading invisiblek's stock 4.1 and I'm going to try that. If my partitions are shot do I have any options? Man this socks!

Scratch that, just did a day wipe and it's back up. Had hoped not to loose my pics from my hike yesterday. My niece will be disappointed

Odin should definitely work, keep trying, there's no reason why it wouldn't be able to pass.
If you can't get it to pass using a normal method, try this:

[Warning] Ice Cream Sandwich OS Bricks

This thread is now irrelevant as Jellybean is available for the device.
The old post can be found below:
As of right now be sure that you all are extemely cautious when trying to flash any type of ICS package (be it firmware, a ROM, or any type of system running it). Our tablet may have an issue with ICS as many other galaxy devices have. A bug currently exists that corrupts the mounting of the data partition on the device which *MAY* lead to a permanent hard bricking of your device.
This is currently a very RARE issue, however, those who are not well educated in Android development and that do not know how to 100% reset their tablet should refrain from flashing any type of ICS ROM or ODIN package.
If you have already flashed an ICS ODIN package or are running CM9 safely and have been for a good amount of time, then my guess is that this issue will not effect you, BUT it may strike you at any given time!
For those of you who insist on upgrading to ICS, *PLEASE* backup your entire ROM and make sure that you have the stock HC ODIN package. Although it probably won't help having them if you are hard bricked.

I also had the can't mount data problem, I tried for 3 days to get it to work. I ended up sending it back to Samsung after reverting everything to stock. I was on cm9 though and one night it just started bootlooping while i was asleep. I.e. it would fully boot then restart after 5 seconds or so. So I tried reverting to stock and trying again, which is when I got the can't mount data issue. I literally tried every combination of wiping, recovery, Odin/heimdall, and the only thing that would get past the Samsung logo was cm9, which would just stick at the boot animation forever. I got tired of messing with it and thought it could have been a hardware problem, so I sent it back under warranty

I dont have posting privleges in the developer forums but i thought i would let you know whats up with my tab.
Rooted it, got cwm on it and flashed cm9. Worked for about a week without issue then started the bootlooping issues. I couldnt even wipe the data in recovery.
Used odin to go back to stock HC according to your instructions. Then i thought it bricked cause it just got stuck on the default screen showing galaxy tab. Tried installing HC a few more times but it never booted.
Tried one more time but now with the stock ics. Still nothing so i gave up.
Only thing is i couldnt power off. I planned to let the battery die. So it just sat on the default gakaxy tab screen and about 30 minutes later it showed the samsung boot animation.
I let it sit for another half hour with samsung pulsing. Nothing. So i reboot into recovery (stock) which i couldnt even get to before now, wipe everything like 5 times then reboot the device.
Booted up and works like a charm. I thought this thing wad gone.
Not sure if the stock ics tar file did the trick but let everyone know that mine came back to life. It possible other devices could be bricked but maybe there is a chance for some people.

If you have flashed ICS and you have bricked your device I am sorry. I know there are a few people out there who have....
To conclude, everybody please be careful about tinkering with your device. I know ICS has great speed enhancements and all, but as of right now your box of ice cream sandwiches may or may not be poisoned.

CM9 [View thread]
Guide to flashing ICS [View thread]
EDIT: Our case is not the same as the other galaxies.... Ours effects the data partition while theirs effects their emmc... I'm assuming ours may be a bug with the firmware installation / recovery as it was with theirs however I'm not sure why it is effecting users on CM9....
EDIT 2: We should all be cautious and NOT wipe at all using Samsung's ICS Recovery. I was chatting with aorth and he suggested that that may be the cause of the issue. His recovery (or the one I posted in my guide) are safe to wipe on.
EDIT 3: I guess we also have reports of the emmc being corrupted as well...
Just don't wipe data/factory reset using recovery ICS (RECOVERY 3e). Use recovery 5.5.0.4 or 6.0.x.x......only you wipe for up new rom, everything will be OK.

Yeah, i experienced this type of total brick. I flashed p6200 ics firmware with mobile odin and than did factory reset in ics recovery mode. I think this was the reason of hard brick. After some time tablet did shut down and didn't turn on. Service fixed the problem, they said that main board died.
Ignore this post.

I really don't think it was a problem with upgrading. I had been on cm9 for over a month, then I woke up one morning and it was bootlooping. I got all the can't mount data errors afterwards, so it's either a hardware problem or cm9 is somehow magically corrupting the /data partition. I hadn't even installed anything recently
EDIT: Samsung just sent me the email that the repair is finished, they replaced the main board, so it definitely was a hardware problem.
Sent from my myTouch 4g via Tapatalk
This issue was brought up a couple months ago by aorth, I think its in his CM9 thread or in one of the rooting or CWM threads. I don't think it is an issue that will be going away any time soon as Samsung isn't in any hurry to fix it, that is if they even can or want to.
Using stock ICS for almost 3 weeks now.
I was backing up and restoring all of the partitions via CWM 6.0.1.0 two times.
Nothing weird happening for the moment.
I use the ics wipe/factory reset and I don't have any problem, I have 6210 .
Well, aorth entioned sth like this before, here his post:
aorth said:
Maybe you guys have heard, but some early ICS ROMs for Galaxy Note and other similar Galaxy S II variants have triggered hard bricks due to faulty MMC firmware handling erase commands improperly. I never bothered to read up about the issue until now, but it looks like we should also be careful.
Chainfire just released a tool to print out whether your device has a known-bad firmware revision, Got BrickBug?. As you can see, my device has firmware revision 0x19. This revision has been known to cause hard bricks on other devices using Samsung ICS ROMs.
CM9 is safe (Entropy512 haxx0red the kernel), but we should be careful.

I'm not sure if I had the bad one, but mine worked fine for months too. Then out of the blue it bootlooped and when I tried to fix it by reverting to stock, I got the error. Hopefully when it comes back it will have a different firmware revision (if that's what the problem was)

If you flashed it using Mobile Odin that's normal because it uses its own recovery.
Ok, so what's the verdict? This bug sounds very scary.
Given that I'm running a stock ICS flashed via ODIN, should I be running:
-Stock recovery
-CWM
-Something else
to avoid bricking while factory reset?
I also use mobile Odin to flash ics and no problem. So, could you say that with Mobile Odin are safe from this problem?
Just read this http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/xj2hd/i777_superbrick/, seems some of the things said could be relevant for us.
I have a galaxy note and Entropy who is dealing directly with samsung on this issue has a thread over on the galaxy note page. Lots of information over there.
I use the free emmc bug check app by vinagre https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.vinagre.android.emmc_check&hl=en to check my samsung devices on ics. Not entirely sure that the same case applies for the note and the tab plus though but it does give me peace of mind.
Just to err on the side of caution, I always odin flash back to gingerbread to wipe cache and other stuff before upgrading. This seems to have worked for me so far. *fingers crossed*
Check out that app above, its free and have a read of entropy's thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1698977 but beware they don't take kindly to noob questions. I just mainly read entropy's updates and replies and ignore most of the rest of the stuff there.
Is there any chance to bring my tab to life has the repair center hasen't repaired mine
hi,
i have flashed the stock ICS, the Austrian version using ODIN3. i have been running it since july 18th.
so far i dont see any problem with my tab..
just to say, i have flashed the firmware atleast 3 times, just as an exercise. and have factory reset it after ICS flash atleast like 5 times now.
everything so far works fine. i use the stock recovery for factory reset.
after the 1st flash, i had root.. then thought of unrooting, so flashed the firmware 2 more times.
and in between the flashes, i have factory reset a lot of times.
so far, the bootloop problem which i used to have when on HC, is not there. hopefully, it wont occur in ICS.
hope, this helps developers.

Thanks with manual method described in this thread I've confirmation that my data partition became corrupted.
Yes it is alive !!!
I've deleted mmcblk0p9 (DATAFS on my P6210) and recreate one with smaller size (3 GB) than normal (15.2 GB).
When the tablet boot I realise I've 1.68 GB of storage
Now I may increase the size of data but previous tries told me if data reach 5 GB in size the creation of partition fail.

Re: [BeanStalk][1.179] Phone freezes after call
I am currently running Beanstalk 1.179. I've noticed with this build, and with at least one prior build I can't recall, that after an incoming phone call of at least a few minutes, the caller hangs up, and shortly after, my phone freezes. I'm all cases that I've noticed it, I've answered the phone while it was locked, and it returns to the lock screen before freezing. I've got the lock screen configured to use a password.
I can't recall anyone else mentioning this previously, so I thought I'd mention it. If it's not happening to anyone else, I'll assume it's my own problem.

Thank you for the idea. I was just going over in my mind the ROMs that I have installed since I purchased the phone with an early version of scott.hart.bti's ParanoidAndroid already installed, and while I did not experience the issue with any of the ParanoidAndroid versions I installed, I believe I did also experience it while I was running Unofficial CM10 briefly between PA and BeanStalk. Perhaps the problem is indeed my own device, or something more deeply in the build source than with the build(s) themselves.
FWIW, in almost all instances when I installed a ROM, I always followed the entire procedure recommended by scott.hart.bti, including wiping the dalvik cache, as I did with my most recent install of Beanstalk 1.179.

as you become more familiar with flashing a rom and the principles, you will find that the cook book process may help but some times you may have to deviate from it to make it work.
ex: sometimes you may have to flash cm9 twice to get into the boot screen ..or flashing cm10 twice or reboot twice..or wipe a few extra time.
from my own experience, you have noticed something not working correctly..(sd not recognized, calls being dropped, app FC's and no one else had the same) you may need to start over...back to gb stock via heimdall or odin and work your way up.
the more i had screwed up and had to go back, there more i learned each time.

Interesting. I remember that it took me forever to build up the courage to update ParanoidAndroid the first time, and scott.hart.bti's clear and complete cook book process certainly helped get me there. I have broken one of the Beanstalk ROMs once, too, and had to look up how to boot into CWM from power off to reflash.
I'm curious why going back to stock would make a difference. It seems to me that if I a doing a complete flash, wiping everything, than it shouldn't matter if it's a stock ROM or a new ROM. I'd be more nervous about breaking something if I going back to stock, since is a more complete and drastic change.

yeah...for the most part, while in cwm, factory reset, wipe system, data, cache, dalvik and then flashing a new rom work very well.
occasionally, for what ever reason that i'm not sure, going back to stock..changing file system back to rfs and then changing back to ext4 may be needed to fix certain problems...not common and not routine practice, but is needed...at least imo
OK, fair enough. I will read up more on going back to stock so I'm not unfamiliar with it. Which tool do you prefer?
For completeness of troubleshooting info for anyone else who may be reading, I received a phone call yesterday while the lock screen was disabled, and the phone still froze after the caller hung up. I received another call today, and made sure I hung up first, and no freeze, my phone was fine.

Flash Kernel

So a while back I rooted my S3 i535, and started trying to install customer roms. The only one that would work was Slimbean so I have been using that for a while, but it has begun to occasionally freeze on me.
I would like to try switching over to maybe Liquidsmooth or ParanoidAndroid. My problem is whenever I flash these roms the phone won't boot, and just sits at the splash screen. I am kind of thinking maybe it is because I need to flash a different kernel, but I have never done that and am unsure of which Kernel I should use or the steps I should take in doing this. Any advice is appreciated.

Sorry to hear this, there is no reason why my sg3 would work and yours doesnt though
a ODIN reflash back to stock I assume will fix things.
if you'd like to try a clean stock TouchWiz ROM, please give mine a try and let me know how you like it.

but from the sound of it, it sounds as though either
you are not waiting long enough for it to boot (first boot can take up to 10-20 mins..)
or not wiping fully in recovery before the flash

in theory AOSP ROMs should load faster than a Touch Wiz ROM as TW ROMs are around 1 gig for the ROM.zip and AOSP ROMs are about half that, but still I've had ROMs take over 15 mins to load, I know one time I thought it was the phone, but then I wiped fully again, and waited 20 mins and it loaded. I would say anything after 20 mins though, then it's definitely something wrong.
Ok backing stuff up then going to flash back to stock then try LiquidSmooth and see if it will let me boot up. Will let ya know how it goes.
So I install stock un-rooted rom. Then installed a stock rooted rom, then installed liquidsmooth and all I get is the Samsung symbol flashes then it goes black. Then it vibrates and the Samsung symbol flashes then blackness. Just repeats this over and over =(
I noticed you said that you're wiping cache and dalvik, but make sure you're also wiping data and system too.

My apologies moderator.
Anyways. I wiped everything on the phone before every rom installation. System restore, dalvik, and cache. The custom rom still won't boot.

RESOLVED! [Q] No network access after trying to install Cyanogenmod. Phone dead now.

I tried to install the latest and greatest version of cyanogenmod this morning but once it got to the activating part, it would not activate. I tried it a couple times, rebooted, wiped, installed and tried again, but nothing was working.
So, I had enough and wiped everything and restored my previous ROM's backup (CleanROM).
But now, even CleanROM can't connect to the mobile network. When I try to do the *228 thing, I first got an error something about a invalid SIM card. So, I rebooted and now the error message says "A Verizon Wireless SIM card has activated your service and updated your phone's roaming capabilities".
What's weird about that is that it doesn't even call, just pops up that message and I still have no network!
Could it be possible that have the wrong radio now? Anyone know what it's supposed to be and where to download the correct one?
Right now: I535VRLG7
What the f happened? What did cyanogenmod do to my phone??? Please help, my phone is dead in the water at this point.
Was it 10.1.0.1? I tried flashing it myself and data would not work either, first time ever happened to me since running CM. Apparently others are having issues with it as well reading the thread on the dev section. I restored my backup of 10.1.0 and it was fine again thankfully. Also you aren't supposed to *228 on a 4G phone, might want to do a search but others have said that can mess up your phone as well.

Yes, that's the version I was trying to install.
I created a backup of CleanROM that I was running before flashing, but that's not working now either. Network is dead for me.
I am having the exact same issue. Flashed the newest "stable" build of CM 10 and now the phone won't activate. Flashed CM10 RC5 and phone won't activate. Installed my backup I made before I flashed and it will not make/receive calls either. I tried searching the g+ community but did not see anything.:crying:

I've tried a bunch of stuff so far, but no luck fixing this. I'm waiting for some files to copy and I'm going to try again. This sucks. I'll post if I have any luck with a fix.
I'm having the same issue. What Baseband are you guys running?

I'm on I535VRBMB1, but I was on I535VRLG7 for some reason. Upgrading did not help.
Welp, going to have to Odin back to stock. Nothing has worked. It's dead. Time to bring it to stock and have Verizon fix or replace it. Thanks cyanogenmod!
I hope I don't have to do that also. I posted in the cm g+ community and I'm waiting on an answer atm. Jumped in irc chat but got no help.

Found this post on G+. Looks like it is a known issue that a radio didn't make it into the build.

But I've flashed the radio and it didn't work for me. I tried two different ones and neither worked.

No need to take your phone back to verizon.....The way to fix it is to Odin back to I535VRALF2. Once stock dial *2767*3855# let it do it's thing when it finishes reboot. After that 4G will be back. Re root and flash CM 10.1.0 NOT 10.1.0.1
Well an update on this. I flashed MIUIv5 found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2232800 and it booted up and worked like a champ. From there I booted back into CWM and wiped, etc and installed a fresh RC5 and gapps. When the phone booted up the phone would take calls but would force close. From here I booted back into CWM, again wiped and then installed my RC5 backup I made this morning that was working and crossed my fingers. Well when the phone booted up it is working 100%!
I guess my question is what did 10.1.0.1 break that a flash to MIUIv5 fix?
Same issue. I had to wipe everything, format everything (maybe wasn't needed), flashed the newest nightly, latest baseband (something something F1), and gApps of course. I then had to check the "mobile network" settings and change it to SIM card (instead of NV) then reboot, and it worked.
The "stable" builds have been less stable than the nightlies lately, dunno why...
i'm also having this issue guys, I've noticed that my imei is 0. I've tried punching in the codes to get the utility, but can't get anything working...totally lost
RESOLVED!
It was a PITA, but I got 4G back with CM!
This is how I did it, but be forewarned that your device will be wiped, and it will not be a quick fix.
I first used this post (Section 5) to Odin back to stock.:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709
Once I was back to stock, the network was still not working. So I dialed "*2767*3855#", it did something, rebooted and then 4G worked!
After that, I was able to follow the same guide from above (Section 1) to root the device, unlock the bootloader and install a recovery.
Once I was at that point, I installed CM from recovery. I had wanted to install the cm stable version 10.1.0, however I failed to copy that to my SD card before I started this whole process.
I had just moved and don't have many of my "tools" (i.e. sd adapters), so I couldn't even download it on my computer and copy it over. Oh, I also performed a factory wipe at this point as well as format the davlik and system...oops. So, yeah, couldn't simply boot it back up easily to copy the files over...got ahead of myself.
Anyways, I kept my fingers crossed and installed the only one that was on the sd card which was the nightly from 6/29. The good news is that worked!
I have since installed the latest nightly (6/30), because why the heck not? I was already on the previous, so it "shouldn't" hurt, right????
Nope, didn't hurt!
So, now I am running the latest nightly with full network access!
Whew, what a pain! Hope this helps you guys!

This worked for me.
Thanks!
I'm on vacation and tried to flash 10.1.0.1 and got hosed on the the radio connection. Nothing would work. Found an old nightly, 6/21 I believe, on my external SD card. Flashed that bad boy and I'm up and running again. Will do more trouble shooting when I get home in a few weeks and have my PC in front of me.

Back to RC5
I had a similar issue, upgraded to 10.1.01 and lost all data connectivity. Wiped clean and tried to upgrade again, then I could not get past the network activation screen.
Wiped and went back to a backup of RC5 and it restarted with less issues, but I still needed to go and correct the Mobile Network RUIM/SIM settings before I got data back.
RC5 has been solid, so I'm going to stick to it until there's a fix for 10.1.01.
this didnt work for me

odd black screen after every boot/reboot ?

i've been using CWM recovery and CM nightlies. they've been just fine. today i restored a two day old backup, as i didn't care for the current nightly.
now the phone black screens after the samsung splash.
i've tried:
factory reset
wipe dalvick/cache
restoring other backups
flashing other nightlies
and the phone will boot for the first time, but if i select 'reboot' or 'power down' on the next boot it's only a samsung splash, then black screen (no cm splash, no response from buttons input), and will not boot again.
what's the problem ?

Happens once in a while when you flash over a back up.
Try making a clean flash.

i've done that. right now, i've wiped everything, and then flashed a nightly, and it will not reboot !
it will only boot the -one- time directly after flashing a new rom. any reboot attempts after that means it freezes, or fails, with a black screen directly after the samsung splash.
what have i missed ?

Sniped lol
i've wiped everything. flashed back to stock via odin, rooted, just like always.
i've even wiped in between.
after the FIRST clean boot, there is no rebooting. all it does is continue to hang after the samsung splash. no cyanogenmod, no stock rom, no nothing, nothing will boot the SECOND TIME.
i really don't understand this.
i'm using CWM recovery 5.5.0.4, cm-nightly 10-05, and it just don't think it's going to work properly again. it's a real shame, cause i really like the size, weight, and speed of this phone. but if it won't boot, i can't use it.
if anyone has any tips, i'll try them. at this point i really don't mind destroying it, and it might make me feel better to do so.
i meant to add, it doesn't matter if i use a backup, flash a fresh new rom, or use stock. the first boot works fine, but all boots after that wether from powering down or selecting 'reboot' fail.
maybe this part will help -
if i wipe the phone completely, it will boot. let's call this boot 1.
i can setup the phone, or change nothing in settings, doesn't appear to matter, and choose 'power down' or 'reboot'. let's call this reboot 1.
the next time i power on the phone, black screen. no CM splash, nothing. i guess we'll call this hang 1 ?
ideas ?

The October nightlies are cm10.2 right? Your using the old recovery, that's the issue. And there are newer nightlies.

yes, they're fairly recent nightlies. i skipped back to the 10-5 nightly as i thought that might ahve been part of the problem. since you're pointing to my recovery being an older version, i'll update it. thanks for the clue stick !

hey thank you for that. i've removed the old cwm recovery, flashed new, lots of other flashes, and it finally works again. now to dig up a non-corrupted backup and hopefully be back to working.
thanks button was used
well, after all of that i'm going to roll with cm-10.0, cwm 6.xomething, so i can have a working compass on oruxmaps.
i won't be updating until 10.x begins to support compass functions again.
see yall then !

Make sure you use the latest cm10 nightly, as the old stable one is a lot less "stable" than the name suggests, and is lacking features

thanks for the tip !
i finally got all the corrupted files (or whatever was causing problems) rm'd from both the phone and sdcard.
as of yesterday i had CM-10.o + CWM 6.0.3.8 and gapps 2012-8 (i think) working nicely on the phone. backed up a nandroid of all of it two times, and restored them to make sure restores were working. yes, everything fine.
as of today, i have CM-10.2 (latest nightly) + CMW 6.0.3.8 and gapps (current) working nicely on the phone. backed CURRENT up nandroid on sdcard, and restored a few times to make sure. yes, working fine.
seems it was
A) corrupted files/filessystems
and/or
B) too old a clockworkmod recovery
C) unstable CM version( s )
but now all is fine. thanks to all that helped !
