Great replacement apps - T-Mobile LG G2x

I created this thread not only to help those who have root, but to also help those who choose not to root their phones
the first app replaces the Dialer, It's called "Osmino: contact manager"
the second app is very well know amoung the community, called "Chomp SMS", which combined with Osmino makes an elegant duo.
Third, is "WinAmp Free", great music player with an eye catching interface, supports multiple formats
fourth is "Dolphin Browser" because it supports flash by default, which is great since Adobe discontinued Official Android Platform.
fifth: If you're someone who is constantly switching roms, and experience troubles with APN, then download "Offline APN Database" you can browse through by worldwide APN's list, and the app will automatically fill in your APN for you.
Sixth: "Smart Launcher" because of it's Ultralow Memory footprint, and it's ability to theme itself based on 1000+ theme packs, compatible themes:ADW,GO,APEX,NOVA,etc.

good post man. I think im going to check out dolphin browser as I've heard way too many good things about it by now lol

Something else you may want to give a go

I've started using this really nifty app called Swapps, basically what the app does is you swipe the side of your screen(Similar to swipe pad) except, it's kind of like the blackberry Z10, it lists all your apps and has beautiful animations to tie it all together.
As for dolphin browser, I like all the add-ons, supports flash, and my favorite feature, you're able to choose your destination folder for your downloads, which not many mobile browsers do. I can download ZIPS straight to my root directory off the phone :cyclops:

G2x Favorite Apps
Hello Everyone,
These are my favorites:
1) Go Launcher Ex

5) All in one toolbox - one of the best I've found

Dolphin Browser HD2 *Pre launch version added*

Did you hate the speed of Dolphin Brower? Was it kinda sluggish, and gave you a headache?.. Well yea, I am not here to save you from your headaches...
..However..
Dolphin Browser HD2 is coming tommorow according to Androidtapp, it brings the following features along with it:
Androidtapp.com said:
Key New Feature Enhancements in Dolphin Browser HD2:
-One of the biggest advantageous you’ll notice is the speed of the browser and how it controls. The other advantage is user interface enhancements and creative interface controls.
-In v1.2 and lower when you slide the screen from left to right your windows management panel appears, this has been opted for Bookmarks & Most Visited websites. Window management can now be found in Add-ons toolbar by longpress and sliding that panel down.
-Browse the web in Full screen.
-When you slide from right to left the installed Add-ons toolbar appears (oh, don’t forget to grab the AndroidTapp.com RSS Add-ons).
-Lastly, there are new add-ons like Adblocker, Password Manager (super convenient), and Screen Cut.

Heres a video, if you're interested:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jg1tfMSBYEI
I have been using the default browser lately since it seems to meet most of my needs, but maybe this will change things. Though, I said the same about the first version..
I've been using Dolphin HD for a while and really like it, but it was slightly sluggish and lacked some basic user interface features. This could really be a contender for Fennec on Android if it gets a decent amount of attention from the extension devs.
Looks WAY improved over HD1. Can't wait.
Looks awesome! Hopefully it's comparable in speed with the Froyo stock browser. HD1 was just unusable because of its sluggishness.
It should be out today ?
Looks amazing , especially the adblock plus add-on .
=/ Yeah I can't find it anywhere; is HD2 already out?
will hd2 just be an updated version of dolphin HD ?
so that i will get an update notify on market?
or is it a complete new browser?
Give me an option to remove the tab bar and I'll use it! I like all my screen real estate, the tab bar annoys me.

Same question here.
Why don't you guys try the pre launch version that's posted in the OP?
I'm trying it already. It seems quite different from the previous dolphin HD.
Still no "on demand" for flash plugin though.
seems to be released
and it's updated to the normal dolphin
i really like that the URL bar is now hidden by default and only shown while using the menu key, more space!
yeah, its released.
HD2 is just a normal update from V1, you can get it straight from the market as an update.
Still no "on demand" option for flash
still dog slow.

yes it does, however it requires froyo with flash player installed.
p.s. i am still finding to way to switch flash on demand just like stock browser of froyo does
Am I the only one seeing no add-ons? I didn't expect them all to be there with it being a pre-launch version but i can't see any
Is anyone else having problems scrolling from side to side? Whenever I try to do so, it activates the swipe features (toolbar and bookmarks).

Android 2.3!

hi friends. i know, i know this discussion is premature, but lets talk about what we want from android 2.3 ....to be a good source of inspiration for those who make it
God bless you to have the best inspiration!
Not a bad idea...
They should root it out of the box
Love. World peace.
since 2.2 had a 400-500% performance boost, 2.3 should have a 4000-5000% boostv
They've got the performance down. I think 2.3 will focus more on the user - ease of use and greater stability to compete with the iPhone. This will be shortly followed (3.0 maybe) with a whole new user interface design. They didn't hire the WebOS designer for nothing...
More than anything, I want the application's interface to look better and more unified. Like on an iOS, no matter how bad the app is, it still looks just as good as anything else. On Android, having a good looking UI is rare.
'Settings' in Froyo looks great, black background, white text, easy to navigate. But then you go to settings in Beautiful Widgets, and the text size is different, check boxes are on the left instead of right, and it's just not unified. They need a stricter standard.
I would love to see pinch-zoom on Email/gmail.
Maybe an option to display google voice SMS in the standard MMS app. A more customizable phone app, as in choosing which screen to default to and have a T9 search option... ( Like Dialer One)
Launcher Pro as standard launcher
Hold down volume to switch tracks on default music player

Yes, this is a big deal. froyo has most of the basics that people were begging for: voice dialing, apps2sd, latest opengl, etc but they really need to blow everyone away on the UI. The reason why there's so much fragmentation is because of all these custom UI's and the reason why we have those UI's is because there is a perception that Android needs them to look good.
But once you get past the first few screens and into actual apps, there's nothing to hide. There has to be a general system for UI controls for all the apps so that they can look good without much effort.
Also, in many OS's, even the controls are themable and if Google can do that, an OEM could have an Android that looks completely different all the way down but runs all the apps and they would operate the same way.
from what i've heard, there's no 2.3. Gingerbread is a major release.. Android 3.
Here a To-Do list for the android developers :
- add the possibility to hide some apps from the drawer
- add a theme manager to change theme and restore the original one more easily
- enable root automaticaly
- add a feature like "Android Guard" to lock and locate your phone with your google account
- add a backup manager, linked with your Google account which could backup all your apps and data (like Titanium Backup) to switch easily from a ROM to another or to change your android phone.
I've no more idea for the moment but here are some nice features

2.3 or 3, real flash support, that works well, not just "sort of works well"
Thread moved since it isn't development.

The latest update to K-9 (which I prefer over the stock email app) has this. I was quite surprised when I saw it. Though, it does exclude GMail, but I think that's because GMail inaccessible to third-parties right now.

Must have apps? New N1 owner here.

Hey,
I'm new to the N1 forums and I've just bought a Nexus One!
So anyone care to point me to your must have apps? Like a top ten or something?
Best file manager? Movie player? Compass app? Stopwatch? Twitter client? etc. etc.
I'm also running stock Android Eclair and want to know if it's better to go Froyo or use a custom ROM.
Thanks.

There are several existing threads that cover this subject. Please use the search.
Since froyo is thought to be right around the corner, I would wait it out just a week or two more, then upgrade and see what you want to do as far as unlocking the bootloader, and custom roms, etc.
So far as apps:
Lost of people use Astro File Manager, and Linda. Both are free on the market
Another great app for the Nex is the Nexus Torch, which makes your LED flash from the camera a flashlight haha! SUPER useful.
Astrid is a great, free, to-do list.
ADW Launcher is a KILLER, free, homescreen replacement, that gives you a froyo look, and lots of cool functionality. Cyanogen uses it is his cooked rom for the Nexus, so it comes highly recommended.

[APP] Bookmarks Light - Beta testers needed. v1.2 (new version 2/2/11)

hello xda. i'm a new android developer, and this is my first android app. i've been doing web development for 14 years, and this is my second mobile phone app (first was for windows smartphone 5.0).
the idea is that i wanted a quick way to view and open my browser bookmarks. usually, one has to open the browser first, possibly wait for it to reload whatever page was last viewed, open the bookmarks view, and find your bookmark in an unsorted list.
my solution is a lightweight app that simply displays your browser bookmarks, allows you to sort them in various ways, lets you search by name, provides the ability to edit and delete them, and gives you the option to choose which browser to open them with. you can quickly open any bookmark with two finger presses. one to launch the app, and one to open the bookmark. it's nothing fancy, but it does save a little time.
the app shows your system bookmarks, so you are looking at and managing the same bookmark database that the default browser uses. any changes made in either this app or the browser, will be reflected in the other.
for a little icing on the cake, you can choose a background image for your bookmarks list. i like to use my home screen wallpaper from launcher pro.
if you find a bug, or the app crashes, please post a detailed description of what happened. reports like "it crashed" or "this sucks" don't help me. please try to reproduce the problem, and post the steps required to do so. also please state what device you're using, and what version of android you're running.
the app requires android 1.6 or above.
this app is licensed under this creative commons license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/
changelog:
1.2 - share a link from any app with Bookmarks Light to create a new bookmark. you can also now share a link from within Bookmarks Light.
1.1 - add new bookmark feature
1.0 - release version. no code changes. now in Android Market!
0.9.3 - fixed force close on eclair (2.1). added move to sd ability for froyo.
0.9.2 - added tips dialog. license change. gingerbread compatibility. app renamed to Bookmarks Light.
0.9.1 - added "about" dialog, and changed names of tabs

thanks. glad to hear it's working. i uploaded a new version with minor tweaks. upgrading is unnecessary, unless you feel like it.
i did consider saving the choice of browser for each bookmark. that would require a separate database to store that data, since there is nowhere for it to go in the system bookmarks database. perhaps a feature for version 2.0.

UPDATE: Tried all six menu options and all Tabs. Multiple browsers. Installed quickly without issue. App responds well and scrolls smoothly. No FCs here. Well done!

Suggestions for upcoming versions:

//Edit Export/Import, yes
I would like to see the ability to save and restore my bookmarks.
That is one of the pains with doing a wipe when trying new ROMs - having to restore all the bookmarks. Of course, the saved bookmarks would have to be to an sdcard file or online since the wipe would get them if saved in app stores, right?

We will bring out GO Launcher v3.0 in near future which includes a lot of new features.
I will release every beta version here and hope that you can tell me how you feel about our new features.[/FONT]
=Newest Version on Market=
Now the newest version is v3.01.
Market page: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gau.go.launcherex
--------------------------------------------------------------------
=Newest Beta Version=
Next version is v3.02 and there are some new features mentioned below:
1. (New) Combined interface of launcher and locker theme preview
Download: please click here
--------------------------------------------------------------------
=About GO Launcher=
GO Launcher is the most popular home app in Android Market. It allows users to customize home screen, change themes, use smooth transition animation as well as various widgets and screen locks. It brings you a fresh and extraordinary mobile operation experience.
=Features=
- Thousands of personalized themes
- Various widgets and screen locks (weather, switcher, calendar…)
- Extremely smooth transition animation
- Smooth flipping operation
- User-defined folder to easily categorize apps
Many options in preferences to help you customize you phone!
=Tips=
1. How to get themes, widgets and lockers?
a) Search ‘go launcher theme’, ‘go widget’ or ‘go locker’ in Android Market.
b) Use GO Store via menu button in GO Launcher.
2. How to set transition animation?
Use ‘Effects settings’ via button in GO Launcher.
3. Icons are too small?
Use ‘Icon Size’ option in ‘Preferences->Visual settings->Icons’ to make icons bigger.
3. Long press the app icon to enter editing mode on home screen and app drawer.
4. Glide up to open menu and glide down to pull down notification.
5. The widgets in the screenshots belong to GO Widget, attainable from Android Market or GO Store.
=Important=
1. GO Launcher is a totally free app without any charge.

This has always been bugging me, but how does GoTeam actually make a living out of giving the app for free? Personal data sale?
Nice to see dev team developing
Go laucher is best for me, if scrolling would be a bit more smooth would be awesome.
I've said this elsewhere, but I'll take the opportunity to say it again here
I am still using v2.60 for one simple reason. Up to v2.60, when you exit an app you go straight back to the home screen. After 2.60 you go back to the app drawer. I prefer the old behaviour (and I'm not the only one who does) - why not make it an option in the settings, so the user can decide what they prefer?
I have a request, could you please make it an option to remove the home button on the app drawer?

Whoa...someone that can actually hear my voice. Don't know how many times I have tried to reach out to Go to have this changed.
Moving apps from the app drawer to the home screen is horrible!!!
Change it so if you are in the app drawer and your tap and hold on a app you have two options when you slide it to the left or to the right. One being the home screen, the other being the all screens mode. Takes way too long to customize my home screens the way its set up right now.

Also when you guys remake the app drawer, can you make it so we can drag an app from the drawer into a special area that will hide the app?
Absolutely love Go Launcher. It is the best out there.
However I would appreciate it if I were able to use my phone's built-in app transitions (opening an app from the homescreen and back) instead of the "zoom" ones Go Launcher forces on me. I hope you guys are considering adding this to a future version. Go and LauncherPro are the only launchers I know of that have this behavior and LauncherPro hasn't been updated in about a year.
Please consider letting us have this choice. You guys do great work and I'm thrilled to hear about 3.0!
Sent from my Droid Incredible using the XDA app.
Is transparent status bar working?
DEFYing the Android planet with ICS
