[Q] Overheated? - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So one day i left and the tab's battery was pretty low the brigtness drains batteries and when i plug it into an outlet, it treated like a usb it would take super long to charge but later that day {7-8hrs} i came home to a heated tab doing a battery logo with flashing to half way or near half way then shuts of and repeats. Can something be done

Sounds like your battery is shot, try charging it on a low power charger and see what happens

Charging fault. Happened to me when my battery was way too hot.
Your phone is overheating.

Lol...that sux....they really gotta get better batteries goin for these superphones
Could also be faulty voltages coming from the charger.

So best course of action is simply un plug? I get this too during heavy gps usage or heavy streaming via flash.

Yea unplug and let it sit for a while. If you are in your car, best thing that I found you can do is hold the back of the phone up to an AC vent for a couple minutes. If you are home or somewhere with a charging port this I found worked.
ONLY TRY THIS IF YOUR BATTERY DOESN'T FEEL LIKE ITS OVERHEATING.
This happened to me about 2 weeks ago, phone said overheat but the battery and the whole phone was cool to the touch. What I did was turned the phone off, popped the battery out, plugged my phone in to the wall outlet, then popped the battery back in. Started to have the solid amber light that it was charging. After 20-30 minutes of that, booted the phone up and it charged like normal and said that temp was back to normal again. If you follow this and boot the phone up right after you pop the battery in, you will still get the charging error.

G2X won't start!

I had my phone for 3 months. It did this issue before and I removed the battery, it started. Now, it doesn't start with or without the battery. I plug it and press the power for 10 seconds, nothing happens.
I had the phone running for like 3 days till the battery completely drained.
I plugged the phone and I feel it's warm on the camera area and still doesn't start after charging for a while. Total black screen!
I am on CM7 and CWM recovery installed. Any ideas?

Since the battery drained completely it may take an hour or better on charge to get enough juice to restart.
The phone can't start without the battery? with just the charger power?

Ya it just needs to get some serious juice on it before it starts weird issue but mine does the same thing. Plug it in to charge with battery and leave it for about 10+ minutes and it should start up with the plug in.

It's been plugged in for a long time.. Nothing yet...
and when it's charging, it usually displays a battery charge animation...
but the screen is totally black
I've never attempted to turn it on without the battery, but with mine, when the battery has completely died, I can plug it in and turn it on within 15-30 seconds and use it (as long as it's still plugged in). USB charge, I have to wait a little longer, though.
The battery was ok I had no problems with it and I checked the battery status yesterday it was "4 from 100 points" and "Good" health.
The phone did that with me before but it started charging when I detached the battery and inserted it again. I think it was some sort of hanging up and the battery had to be detached even if the phone was off!
It workedddd! finally!
As I said... I had to detach the battery and the power completely and reinsert the battery... This is really weird :S
Maybe it was flooded.

Sounds like a bad battery. Taking li-ion down to fully discharged damages them. The batteries have protection circuitry but if you take it down to nothing and don't charge it right away you could have done permanent damage. If a li-ion is damaged in this way it will never take a charge again. Get a new battery and see if that fixes your problems.

Infuse charging stopped

I had the infuse on the AC charger the other day, when I took it off, it had a message stating charging stopped because of battery temperature. Now battery will only charge to 35% no matter how long its plugged in. Also when phone is off the charger, phone is getting very warm to the touch and the phone is not being used. Do you think I need a new battery or is the charging circuit messed up? Thanks for any input!!!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
If your able to plug it in and it shows it's charging then there is noting wrong with the circuitry. Your gonna need to replace the battery.
A new battery is much cheaper than a new phone.
Batteries heat up as the internal resistance increases over time. As Axiomkid suggests, get another battery. Do it soon. Old (or defective batteries) overheating run the risk of shorting, leaking, or exploding.
Better yet get two batteries and maintain them properly ie discharge to 10%, recharge to 100%, then swap out with another battery and let the recharged battery cool down.
Tried a new battery, it charged to 100%... but drained 50% in one hour. When I charged it again same problem is still happening. Thanks for all that helped.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
You might need a new charger too. are you using the original Samsung charger? Try charging it from a PC too. The 50% drop in the charge could be a calibration issue too. It would improve that reading over the first few charges with the new battery.
yes i am using original charger, i have use a captivate phone charger as well. i think they are both the same. i'm thinking something is wrong with the phone because after charging and taking the phone off, the phone is getting really hot without being on the charger. like the phone is being used but it's not. could maybe the rom cause an issue like this? i'm thinking maybe trying to flash the phone with a stock rom and see how much the battery drains
Problem solved!!! Reflashed ROM and all is good

Glad to hear your problem is solved! Was that the root cause with your first battery as well?

[Q] Tab won"t boot/charge has power

Heard my tab dying from across the room so I went and got it to charge it and it won't bring up the charging animation. It also will not power on while plugged in or unplugged. It still has some remaining power because I can get it to boot into Odin mode but that's it. PC will recognize it in ODIN mode but no visible signs of charging.I am rooted on stock everything else besides CWM. I have left it on in ODIN mode unplugged to try and drain the battery 100% to see if it will charge from dead but its been 10 minutes already so I'm not sure how long that will take. No charging via original charger, PC, generic charger, Galaxy S3 charger, iPad charger, etc...
Try put your wall charger in and leave it for at least 15 mins..
then long hold the power button for at least 15 secs..
this will wake it from deep sleep.you should see the charger icon flashing then can power again and turn it on.If the answer is no sounds like needs to be repaired.ive had this before mine went into deep sleep and i thought it died but came back.
Left it plugged in for 7 hours and it won't do anything now...
EDIT I'm gonna hope it s the battery. I ordered a new one from Samsung today, we'll see when it gets here. said 10-20 days. It seemed to me that the battery life was very short anyways when I got it secondhand. I could go like 5 days or so with my transformer as opposed to a day or so with this tab.
Ok, so I got the new battery and installed it. tab booted right up with 40% battery life. I shut it off and plugged it into my PC to charge as my oem charger is broken and I'm waiting for my new one in the mail. It (finally) charged to 99%. I let it drain completely so as to calibrate the battery and now it won't charge off the PC USB again...
Hit it with a TWO AMP SAMSUNG A/C charger. ie. SGS4 (Sorry for shouting). Max charging A/C rate (from memory) it's actually 1.5 A. Edit : here it is....

I hope you never deplete the battery to zero again.....
Although there are "protection" circuit to hopefully prevent battery damage, deleting to zero can still do this. There is no memory effect in modern device batteries, but a large (uninterrupted) charge cycle will help with calibrating your battery. But to be always on the "safe side", not from zero.
Depleting to zero might not be the only cause, but hope using a better A.C.charger (that your tab recognises and allows full input) will help you. some chargers will supply the full charge current, but the tab won't accept it.

I found that if it goes flat it wont charge off USB, you need to charge it from the wall charger, like UpInTheAir said, not enough amp off the USB ones
I fiddled around with my charger and removed the connector that plugs into the wall and plugged a cable into it (prong was broken off my charger) and it charges fine now. Thanks for all of your time guys, looks like it should be OK now. Still waiting for a new oem charger in the mail.
Hi guys I fear my battery is byond the point of no return as tab is completely lifeless and not even recognised by pc, no charging symbol when plugged in to wall socket.
My question is there a test I can carry out before purchasing a new battery? Any help appreciated.

Check your device socket and charger connections for physical damage.
Try as I suggested in my previous post, then leave it connected for a while before checking.

Thanks for the reply, the charger is ok as it charges my note 10.1. Someone mentioned a few posts back about opening the tab and charging the battery manually, im able to open the case but don't know how to charge the battery manually. Can anyone give me a simple explanation of how to do this.

No problem, but I mentioned a TWO amp charger...... Give it a good "kick start"
So how were the sockets?
There might be some useful info here:

Thanks for the guide , I will study it when I get back from work but the internal connector looks fine. I did forget one thing that maybe important,
When I had tab open and plugged ito my note 2 wall charger ( which is 2.0 amp 5v output) the battery stayed cold but the long silver metal strip to tbe right of the battery became warm to the touch...... not sure what tbat means though.
Is the note 2 charger too weak to kick start battery?
Again thanks for your time and effort.

If the Note 2 charger works with other device, I can't imagine being a problem with it.
Sorry, haven't studied the internal hardware, so can't offer any comment on that.
If you could somehow connect up a external power supply and try charge you might have success or narrow down the problem (if it's actually the battery or part of the charging circuit). Maybe you could PM the OP of that guide for further advice. Seems he's been fairly thorough and recent experience with our device internals. But please report here your outcome, we can all learn something.

Adding to my previous post, there are many examples of this suggestion on the internet..........
http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/five-apps/five-tips-for-extending-lithium-ion-battery-life/
4: Avoid completely discharging lithium-ion batteries
If a lithium-ion battery is discharged below 2.5 volts per cell, a safety circuit built into the battery opens and the battery appears to be dead. The original charger will be of no use. Only battery analyzers with the boost function have a chance of recharging the battery

.
The cut-off level may be different, but same principle..... That's why it's been reported that a high capacity and good quality charger has been able to "kick-start" dead (sleeping) batteries into life.
I have no idea about using or obtaining / connecting "battery analyzers with the boost function" to your battery. Please refer to the previous tutorial link I gave you (which may or may not help).
Cheers,
UITA
Update on my tab. All efforts have failed so have ordered new batt and am awaiting arrival. Will post if it works or not so orhers may gain some insight if they experience similar issues.
Fingers crossed chaps.

I had a similar problem where I let my Tab battery drop too low. I tried various fixes, similar to the ones in this thread. Finally got it to work by letting the battery totally drain by leaving it on the Samsung logo, then opened it up, disconnect then reconnect the battery. Then charge using the wall charger. All good.
P.S. Be careful when opening the case. Refer to Youtube ''How To" vids.
Has anyone seen, or recovered from the below symbol (battery with yellow triangle and a crossed out plug)?
I left it in my luggage for a few days and when I took it out it was around 20% so I just turned it off. Later it wouldn't turn back on so I charged it overnight, over 9 hours.
I've tried holding power and volume down and I can get into Oden mode but otherwise it won't respond.
I tried the hold power button and touch screen for 30 seconds method as well, the farthest I got was the swirling Samsung screen during bootup, then it shuts off.
Afterwords it alternates between a battery charging icon and a (see attached) battery icon with a yellow triangle and a crossed out plug. Has anyone recovered from this?
I just passed one year since I purchased it and am in the middle of a long business trip where I typically depend on it so will be bummed if it's trashed. I don't mind replacing the battery but am not sure if this is the solution, and won't be able to get a battery for about two weeks so I hope there is another way. Many thanks!

For the sake of anyone who has a similar problem. I believe this was due to a faulty charger, which I bought off Amazon so assumed was good. I took it to Bestbuy and tried with one of the display chargers and everything worked as expected. It's a pain but at least I know the battery isn't bad.

Battery charging slow after one point

Hey guys,
You can see the problem in the Screenshot. At one point the phone stops charging fast and goes on charging very slow. It looks like the phone thinks the battery is full and minimizes the charging power. It is a 1500mah battery, bought a few days ago. I also calibrated the battery at 100% in the 4ext recovery. CM 10.2 from 08.08.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Provably not a problem at all. My guess would be that the battery or charging circuits were getting too hot so it dropped the charging current - fairly normal behavior.
The phone is staying completely cool. I think the calibration is wrong. It is supposed to charge slower at 90% Not something like 50
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I suspect a cheap battery... What brand is it?
Its a german brand MTec, oder via ebay.
I've noticed my battery does the exact same thing. Charges quickly to around 50% and then very slow for the remaining 50%. I'm using the original HTC battery that came with my Desire S so I just presumed that it was either the due to the battery aging or perhaps due to the CM 10.1 I'm running. Can't say I noticed this charging behaviour before I used CM 10.1 but I didn't immediately notice it after flashing either.
My phone takes around 8 hours to do a full charge. I've noticed that I can get it to charge to 100% more quickly if I let it charge to near 50%, unplug it and leave it for 5/10 mins, then plug it in again. It's starts off with a fast charge again. It slows after a while but overall it's a quicker way to get to 100%. It's probably not the best thing for your battery to do that regularly so I don't do it unless I need it to charge quickly.
